Planning A Successful Food Truck Event By Dayna M. Reidenouer

When the Mountville Fire Company (MFC) reluctantly canceled its annual carnival in May, it turned to food trucks to make up the lost revenue. “Food - that’s what a lot of people come (to the carnival) for,” related Peter Taraborelli, MFC public information officer and firefighter. Due to the short notice and the safety guidelines in place at the time, the food truck event included primarily carnival vendors and was operated as a drive-through. Still, the turnout was encouraging. “ We wound up having a successful event. We raised $13,000,” Taraborelli said. The 2019 carnival generated $18,000, so MFC opted to host a second food truck event in July to make up the shortfall. “We wanted to capitalize on the fact that people were still bored,

stuck local, still not going on vacation,” Taraborelli said. “We had time to plan, so we wanted to make sure we brought in some local favorites that people were asking about.” Unfortunately, rain on the first night and high heat and humidity on the second negatively impacted the proceeds from the July event. However, MFC is considering making a food truck fundraiser a regular part of its schedule beginning fall 2021. “People really do love food truck events,” Taraborelli remarked. “Lancaster County seems to be the mecca for some unique food trucks.” While organizers cannot command good weather, folks who want to host food trucks - whether one or a dozen can take specific steps to make sure their event is beneficial to everyone involved. what will make it a good event for the business? Hosts need to have some organizational skills, as a food truck event involves more than contacting a business and asking it to sell food on a residential street or in a parking lot. See Food Truck Advice pg 2

Just as local schools have been discussing what academic and extracurricular life will look like in the fall, institutions of higher learning have been making their own preparations. Millersville University (MU) is no exception.

“We want to make sure our campus community is as safe as possible this fall. That’s priority No. 1. Right behind that is to make it as easy as possible (for students) to continue their studies,” said MU director of communications Janet Kacskos. The school year will begin on time on Monday, Aug. 24, and run straight through to Friday, Nov. 20, with no fall break. Classes will also be in session on Labor Day, which will be observed on Monday, Sept. 7. Students will not return to campus following the Thanksgiving recess; instead, they will resume remotely on Monday, Nov. 30. The final two weeks of the semester will be completed online. The second semester will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 19. “The thinking is that keeping students on campus and going straight through will prevent them from spending a lot of time off-campus,” Kacskos explained, adding that the goal is to reduce contact with people outside the school as much as possible. “We’re trying to educate everybody to be smart. For nearly 50 years, Four Diamonds has supported the families of children like Sydney who receive care at Penn State Children’s Hospital, and it funds research into pediatric cancer treatments and cures. “Four Diamonds pays for all the medical bills, child life specialists, meal vouchers, and gas to travel back and forth to Hershey,” Sydney said. “Its main mission is to make sure the family is focusing on their child

It is important to get an idea of what types of food will be of interest to neighborhood residents. For example, a dog treats vendor would not be relevant at an event in an apartment complex with a no-pets policy. Additionally, organizers need to make sure to thoroughly spread the word. Yard signs, mailbox posters, Facebook groups and events, the NextDoor app, and local media are all ways to advertise a food truck event. With those plans at the ready, folks may reach out to vendors. The more specific the request, the better, Landis said, adding, “We have gotten a lot of messages from people who say, ‘Come out to our neighborhood. We have a lot of kids,’ (but that doesn’t tell us much).” Typically, a vendor needs to know the address where the event will be held, the number of houses or residents in an area, the desired dates and times, and what kinds of advertising will be used. It also helps to include a screenshot of the neighborhood with a pin where the truck will park so that vendors can see if the ground is level enough and if there is space for people to wait safely, Landis said. Other tips for hosting a food truck event: •Discuss the event with local officials - both municipal authorities and law enforcement - and obtain their support.

•Always get permission from a property owner to park a truck. The Lickity Split truck will often park in front of the contact person’s home. •Make sure the street or driveway is wide and straight so there is room for the truck. •Check for water/electric requirements. The majority of food trucks are self-contained, but some are not. •Provide a menu in advance so customers can plan ahead and build excitement for their order. •Consider offering preorders for safety. •Use duct tape or chalk to mark the ground so customers can stay 6 feet away from each other. •Ask customers to approach the window one at a time. •Masks should be worn by customers to protect food truck employees, who are required to wear masks. •Schedule enough people to help in areas like greeting guests, removing trash, and helping with parking. •Bring some fun to it. “This is such an awesome way for a community to build connection with each other,” Landis said. “My favorite part is seeing people engaging and connecting with each other, and that’s what people have been missing this summer. Food is always a great way to bring people together.”

Tuition remains unchanged. “A tuition increase had been discussed, but in light of everything that has happened in the world, that was taken off the table,” Kacskos said, adding that scholarships have been set up to help students continue their studies. The Millersville Parade has been canceled, and MU’s homecoming activities will be held online. Mandated athletic events and championships have been suspended through the fall semester by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Mini-THON advisers asked her to join the committee. That year, she served as public relations captain. As a sophomore she held the role of entertainment captain, and this past year, she was entertainment overall. Sydney said she being the overall was her favorite role. “I liked having to plan all the events,” she remarked. “I planned the middle school Mini-THON.” Unfortunately, Sydney never got to see her hard work pay off, as the middle school MiniTHON was scheduled for the week after schools were closed by the stay-at-home order. The high school Mini-THON could not go on as planned, either. “This year, we did a video virtual reveal (of the fundraising total),” Sydney explained. Proceeds were not as high as expected. “We usually make a lot of money at the event, so we lost all of that,” she added. When school begins again, Hempfield’s Mini-THON leadership team will be chosen from a group of applicants by the advisers. Traditionally, the event’s first fundraiser is a car wash in August. Sydney is hoping to add a colorful run or 5K to the fundraising calendar. In recognition of Sydney’s contributions to Hempfield’s Mini-THON, committee adviser and school district library department supervisor Cathi Fuhrman invited her to apply for the 2020-21 Mini-THON Student Leadership Council. “I know that through Sydney’s personal experience with Four Diamonds, her tenacity, determination, and leadership skills would be an asset to the Mini-THON Leadership Council,” Fuhrman wrote in her recommendation letter. “Above all, Sydney’s passion and commitment to the organization that helped save her life will be extremely valuable to the leadership council now and for years to come.” Sydney was one of fewer than 20 students who were selected for the council - more than 50 had applied - and the first from Hempfield. She and her peers will serve as advocates and leaders for Four Diamonds and MiniTHON. During the 2019-20 school year, 294 schools, representing more than 90,000 students, participated in a MiniTHON event. She is pleased to have this opportunity to contribute to Four Diamonds. Following her senior year, Sydney hopes to attend Penn State University and major in human development and family studies. She wants to become a child life specialist, bringing encouragement and support to families and children who are experiencing cancer or other traumatic life events. “My parents always tell me how much the child life specialist meant to me and my sister,” Sydney said. “I want to give back to other families.” For more information about Mini-THON, readers may visit www.fourdiamonds.org /mini-thon.

Library Branches Open For In-Person Services Lancaster Public Library has opened the Lancaster city and Mountville branches for limited, in-person library services. Patrons may enter the building to pick out their own books, DVDs, and CDs, as well as use the public computers and print or make copies. To support the health and safety of patrons and staff, the libraries have instituted certain restrictions, consistent with recommendations from the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. For example, face masks must be worn at all times, and social distancing

is in effect. Patrons are asked to keep their browsing time brief, aiming for no more than 30 minutes. Similar guidelines are in place for the public computers. Public restrooms and drinking fountains are closed, and all chairs and tables have been removed. Other services, like in-person programming and the Juliana Bookstore, will resume again once they can be offered safely and within CDC guidelines. A grab bag service has been launched at the Lancaster city branch; based on patron input, library staff members will select

a grab bag of up to 10 titles. This service is available for people of all reading levels, and books are typically ready within 24 hours. The library has discontinued curbside pickup, but patrons can call ahead to check out items in advance if they prefer a contactless option. The library remained open for business online throughout the stay-at-home order. SVCC Events Postponed The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC) board of directors voted to reschedule all remaining 2020 events until 2021 after careful consideration due to COVID-19 cases increasing across the state and country. The Bridge Bust was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3. Vendors from all over the country participate. Historically, this event attracts an estimated 30,000 visitors to the area. Currently, outside events are limited

to 250 people in attendance while social distancing per Gov. Wolf ’s amended emergency order. The Missy Glenn Memorial River Run 5K was originally rescheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14, and now will be postponed until 2021. The Chamber has been unable to acquire highway permits from PennDOT in order to use the Veterans Memorial Bridge for both events. In response to these postponed events, the SVCC will host its first-ever virtual marketplace

from Saturday, Aug. 1, through Saturday, Aug. 29, to support businesses, restaurants, dealers, vendors, and artists while supporting SVCC. A portion of all sales will be donated to the SVCC. CCWA Creek Stomp Moves To Mount Joy The Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance (CCWA) has held a creek stomp in Rife Run at Mummau Park in Manheim for at least five years. This year’s waterway exploration event, however, will be held at Little Chiques Park, 229 Park Ave., Mount Joy. The event will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, as part of the Lancaster Conservancy Water Week. The event was moved in order to reach out to a different audience, said CCWA president Steve Gergely. The move will also expose previous creek stomp participants to a different tributary of Chiques Creek - the Little Chiques. According to www.chiquescreekwatershed.org, Chiques Creek flows 31 miles from its source in Lebanon County to

the Susquehanna River near Marietta. Along the way, it collects water and organisms from Rife Run, Little Chiques Creek, and other creeks and streams. The health of a tributary impacts that of the Chiques Creek and, by extension, the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. It also affects the people and wildlife living around the tributary. “Everyone benefits from cleaner waterways,” Gergely commented, adding that groundwater is affected by stream health too. “It’s important that we provide education to the public and bring awareness to what individuals can do.” The creek stomp is one of the educational events the CCWA offers to the public. Gergely noted that the organization typically hosts a watershed expo dur-

Students Named To Dean’s List

People of all ages are welcome to participate in the creek stomp, and the CCWA has been working with Mount Joy Borough to identify safe access points to the creek. There is no cost to participate, but registration is required because attendance will be limited for safety. The event will be held rain or shine. Attendees should wear old shoes and clothing that may get wet, and they should bring masks and drinking water. Hand sanitizer will be provided. For more information about the CCWA and the creek stomp, as well as to register, readers may visit www.chiquescreekwatershed.org.

The 2019 Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance creek stomp was held in Rife Run in Manheim. This year’s event will be held in Little Chiques Park in Mount Joy on Aug. 12.

ing Water Week when it is held in June. This year, however, Water Week was postponed, and the expo was canceled because it draws crowds of up to 600 people. The CCWA opted to hold its annual creek stomp during the rescheduled Water Week. During the creek stomp, Lancaster County Conservation District representatives will give a presentation, then distribute nets and buckets and lead attendees into the Little Chiques. There, participants may see what they can find in the water, scooping critters with nets and putting them in buckets for examination on shore. The experts will discuss the findings and what they mean to the health of the creek before returning the critters to the water. “It’s a great family event,” Gergely said. “It’s a good way for everybody to get a hands-on experience of what they find in our local waterways.” Additionally, a tour of the wildflower meadow in the park will be offered.

Elementary School teacher and club adviser Cathy Cieslinski was named the Anchor Club Advisor of the Year by Pilot International. The HHS Anchor Club had a total of 72 members during the 2019-20 school year. The Anchor Club is a service club for students in grades nine through 12. Club members participate in many volunteer activities both within the school district and in the local community. The HHS Anchor Club is sponsored by the Pilot Club of Lancaster Inc. The HHS Anchor Club was chartered in 1988. Pilot/Anchor International is a global organization of approximately 25,000 adult and youth members who work together to improve the quality of life in local communities and throughout the world.

Many groups provided items for inclusion in the bags. The bags also included construction paper, plain paper, glue, mixed media kits, a tic-tac-toe game, pens, pencils, a pencil sharpener, scissors, crayons and other craft supplies. On July 15, the Optimist Club of Lancaster partnered with Ross Street UMC and provided 115 activity bags during the church’s fourth food giveaway. Cavod Academy’s summer musical theater camp for youths ages 10 to 18 has yet to begin, but Alexander Weaver, who will make his first directorial solo effort for the organization, is looking forward to overseeing the camp and producing “Frozen Jr.” at Cavod Academy of the Arts, 665 W. Main St., New Holland. Camp will be held at the venue from Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 14. “The fun is being able to teach students and interacting with the cast and the production crew,” said Weaver. “I love summer camps, (especially) the feel of being able to put on a show, play games, and just connect.” Three performances of the musical, based on the 2018 Broadway version of the Disney animated film, will be held for the public in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Friday, Aug. 14; Saturday, Aug. 15; and Sunday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m. each day. “Frozen Jr.” brings royal sisters Elsa and Anna, along with the land of Arendelle, where they live, to life on the stage. The junior version includes songs from animated film such as “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and “Let It Go,” along with five new songs, which were written specifically for the Broadway production. The story of sisterhood follows Elsa and Anna from their girlhood in the palace to an encounter with danger where each discovers her inner potential. Cast members will represent Elsa and Anna at different ages, and other well-known characters from the film will include Hans, Kristoff, Olaf, Sven, King Agnarr, Oaken, and Queen Iduna. Weaver noted that one challenge of
