9/11 Memorial Stair Climb To Remember NYC Firefighters By Dayna M. Reidenouer

After hijacked airplanes impacted the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, triggering their collapse, the nation vowed to never forget the lives lost in that tragedy. A decade later, Lancasterarea firefighter Scott Yuill felt he needed to do something to make sure the 343 firefighters who died during rescue attempts continued to be remembered. As a result, Yuill and his firefighter colleagues hosted the first Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb, which was patterned off similar events held around the country. “It’s a good event to focus people’s attention on what actually happened. We promised to never forget,” Yuill said. “(The stair climb) makes (9/11) more real - you’re doing what they were doing: climbing steps.”

Now, as another anniversary of 9/11 approaches, the Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb committee has planned its ninth annual event. The climb will take place at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Sunday, Sept. 8. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. A warm-up for participants will be led prior to the ceremony’s opening. A musician will perform the national anthem. The committee is working on securing the services of a bagpiper to play solemn music during the ceremony too. Prior to the beginning of the climb, a roll call of the 343 deceased firefighters will be held. Each participant will receive a badge containing the name, rank, and photo of one of the firefighters. Penn State Extension will offer duplicate sessions of a program on the spotted lanternfly, an invasive pest that threatens Pennsylvania agriculture and home gardens. Cavod Academy’s second 2019 summer musical theater camp has yet to begin, but Cordell Huyard, who will direct the camp’s production of “Mary Poppins Jr.,” is already praising the cast. “The cast is already blending well,” said Cordell, noting that the group had met for a read-through. “This is one of the strongest dance groups we have ever had in a junior show. We have a lot of triple threats in this cast,” he said, referring to performers who are proficient at singing, dancing, and acting. The cast, which is made up of Lancaster County students ages 10 to 18, will begin rehearsals at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, on Monday, July 29. Camp will run through Friday, Aug. 9. Performances will be held at The Junction Center on Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. “Mary Poppins,” a musical, is based on the book by P.L. Travers, which is the pen name adopted by Helen Lyndon Goff, a British novelist whose childhood experiences provided inspiration for the story of

Audiovisual presentations, original artifacts, and hands-on interactives will help visitors to learn what it was like to live through the traumatic circumstances that each child endured. The exhibit recreates spaces where each child felt safe. For Anne Frank, exhibit designers chose the building where her family spent two years in hiding from the Nazis. Born in Germany in 1929, Anne went into hiding with her family in 1942. They remained in hiding for 25 months until they were discovered and sent to concentration camps. Anne’s bestselling

diary is a testament to the power of words. Visitors will get to explore aspects of the first-grade classroom where Ruby Bridges spent an entire school year alone with her teacher. In 1960, Ruby was one of four girls chosen to integrate the public school system in New Orleans, but she was the only one to attend the all-white William Frantz Public School. She was accompanied by four United States marshals each day as she entered her classroom, walking through an angry mob of protesters who were upset by the Supreme Court order to let black and white children go to school together. As an adult, Ruby established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance of differences and provide educational resources to children, teachers, and parents nationwide. Mary Poppins. Travers’ books were adapted by Walt Disney in 1964 into a musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The stage musical ran on Broadway from 2006 to 2013. The play tells the story of the Banks family in London. The family is struggling with two difficult children, Jane and Michael, played by Cate Caplan and Josiah Henne, respectively. The children have managed to derail every nanny their parents have hired. While George Banks, played by Charlie Hill, insists on a strict nanny, the children are intrigued when the mysterious Mary Poppins, played by Celeste Huyard, appears at their doorstep. Following her lead, the children experience a series of memorable adventures, accompanied by Mary’s sidekick, Bert, played by Gavin Haas, that impact the entire family, including the mother, Winifred Banks, played by Hannah Whisman. Cordell said he chose the classic show because of the fun experience it will offer campers and because of the wisdom it offers to people of all ages. “There are great lessons in it,” noted Cordell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. “That really sank in with people,” Yuill said of the bell-ringing aspect, which was introduced at last year’s climb. “It personalized it, and they really liked it.” The stair climb will be held rain or shine. It rained during last year’s event, and attendance was down, but the event still raised $17,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “We’re not money-driven. That’s not why we do the climb,” Yuill said. “Our goal is to remember the 343,” committee member Joyce Mokros added. Yuill praised the 2018 participants, noting that there was some scrambling to move the opening ceremony from the field to the concourse, but the folks involved were flexi-

Bicycling across the United States has always been a dream of Erin Steinweg’s, and this summer that dream will come to fruition as she and her fiancé, Garrett Collins, make the trek across the country. The pair will fly to the West Coast in August to set off on a self-supported bicycle ride from Eugene, Ore., to Yorktown, Va. Steinweg and Collins will be on the road for approximately 60 days to cover a total of 4,200 miles - all while carrying their own tents, sleeping bags, and other supplies. “We weren’t sure when we would get to do it, because there are three main things you need to do a trip like this: time, money, and health,” explained Collins. “But we both had time off and everything else just came into place, so we’re really excited to be going now.” Steinweg, 22, graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2015 and from Messiah College in May with a degree in biology. Steinweg is in the process of applying to physician assistant graduate programs. Collins, 24, graduated from Lebanon Valley College with his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in May and decided to delay his job search a bit so he and Steinweg could bike across the country. Collins, who completed a portion of this bicycling journey with a friend a few years ago, noted, “It’s really amazing some of the people you’ll meet along the way.” For Collins, that included someone trying to set a record while riding a unicycle and members of a group from Harvard University who were using bicycle touring to travel into various parts of the country to teach at-risk children. As Steinweg and Collins ride, they will be raising awareness of and money for Lifecycles, a mentoring program based in Lancaster County that uses bicycling as a means to instill character in young adults. “We wanted to use this trip as an opportunity to raise money for an organization that brings honor to God,” Steinweg shared. “We wanted to make it bigger than just ourselves.” Volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Plus, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. Lifecycles leaders are planning to embark on a crosscountry bicycle tour with a group of boys next summer. Steinweg and Collins are hoping that their own journey will inspire those riders as they train and prepare. “We want to show them that anyone can do it,” said Collins. Training for Steinweg and Collins has mostly consisted of lots of bicycle rides. Meals will generally be purchased from gas station convenience stores, with the occasional sit-down meal to refuel. Generators that attach to and are powered by bicycle wheels will enable Steinweg and Collins to keep their phones charged. In addition to performances by the Corleys, the concert will include singers Anne Kempsell, Jeremiah Miller, Megan and Jay Poff, David Miron, and Rachel Rune Farmer. The program will open with a choral piece featuring Jennifer Mattson and will continue with music selections in many styles, such as classical, pop, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, and Broadway musical, both sung and instrumental. Additional musicians will include Christy Banks, clarinet; Bradley Mattson, trumpet; Matt Monticchio, piano; Tom Hilliker, bass; and Mitch Cooper, drums. Marian Villieux will perform a dance. Donations will be accepted for the Crispus Attucks Community Center (CACC), which is a program of Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAPLANC). According to https://

The food bank is open every second and fourth Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. for seniors and disabled individuals and from 4 to 6 p.m. for others who need support. Additionally, the Crispus Attucks Café is open from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays to provide free meals to the community. Churches, mosques, synagogues, and other community-based organizations cook meals to help the CACC continue its collective support to feed the community on weekends and holidays. Maria Thompson Corley is a pianist, composer, arranger, and writer. A graduate of The Juilliard School, she has appeared on radio, television, and concert stages in Canada, the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and Europe, both as a solo artist and as a collaborative artist. She has released several albums. “Dreamer” includes countertenor Darryl Taylor, “Soulscapes” features piano music by African American women, and a third album records the first 12 of H. Leslie Adams’ “Twenty-Six Etudes for Solo Piano.” Thompson Corley’s recording of “Troubled Water” by Margaret Bonds was featured in the HBO Family documentary “Kabreeya’s Salad Days,” and her performance of the “Etude in C-Sharp Minor” by Adams is included in the documentary “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.” Kiana Corley is a 21-year old musician based out of Lancaster. She draws from the stylings of Corinne Bailey Rae, Tori Kelly, Lianne La Havas, Eryn Allen Kane, and other similar-sounding artists. Her sound can best be described as acoustic soul intertwined with twinges of pop. The Friendship Heart Artists attend day and evening classes through Friendship Community’s Heart Gallery and Studio, located at 118 N. Water St. in downtown Lancaster. The creative arts studio for individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism celebrates personalities and talents through free expression and collaboration. More than 70 different artists work with local professionals and volunteers to create and sell their masterpieces of various media, all while developing a sense of purpose, value, and joy. White, an Indiana teenager whose life brought a voice to the deadly disease of AIDS in the 1980s. As a result of his willingness to speak out, the media and celebrities took up the cause, helping to educate people about the facts of AIDS. Ryan was diagnosed with hemophilia when he was a few days old. After catching pneumonia at age 13 in 1984, he consequently found out he had contracted AIDS from tainted Factor VIII. North Museum exhibits manager Libby Stoesz said that although the exhibit is recommended for children age 8 and older and their families because of being serious in nature, the stories featured can be great conversation starters for children of any age. “It’s good to get kids talking and learning, especially about differences and how you should not bully another kid because he’s different or sick,” Stoesz said.

“You can be handed some really hard cards in life, like each of these kids were,” continued Stoesz. “These three children were a voice, but they didn’t do it alone.” The end of the exhibit challenges visitors to consider how they can make a difference. The exhibit is made possible through NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH), and the Mid-America Arts Alliance. “The Power of Children: Making a Difference” was organized by the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The exhibit opened on June 16 and will remain on display at the North Museum through Sunday, Aug. 11. Taste Of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine Set For July 27 Marten Competes In Golf Tournament

Concert Will Support MFE Students on tour with the Paul Green Rock Academy (PGRA) will perform a “Kids Rock the Park” fundraising concert of classic rock songs at Binns Park, 120 N. Queen St., Lancaster, on Thursday, Aug. 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. The group will play from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and at the top of the set, the performers will be joined by select Music For Everyone (MFE) camp students for two numbers. The local group One Too Many will perform starting sometime between 6:30 and 7 p.m. and continuing until 8 pm. The PGRA students are embarking on a tour that will take them from Norwalk, Conn., to Pittsburgh and back. PGRA saw the opportunity to support MFE, a group of Lancaster community music education advocates, and this opportunity coincided with the music camps. The camps, which began on July 16, will run through Tuesday, July 30, and from July 30 to Friday, Aug. 2. At the concert, the MFE camp students will perform “Bittersweet Symphony” by the Verve and “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin. PGRA is the latest endeavor from School of Rock founder Paul Green, dedicated to teaching young musicians. PGRA is modeled after the original music performance-based educational concept School of Rock, which Green sold in 2010 and which currently has more than 200 franchised schools around the world. PGRA is an audition-only program in which every student tours, plays professional-level shows, and plays with guest stars. MFE is a Lancaster-based nonprofit that provides resources and experiences in support

of music education. Since 2006, executive director and founder John Gerdy and assistant director Brendan Stengle have worked in the community to raise money for music education in the county, including nearly $2 million in grants, scholarships, and direct program support to schools and community arts groups. The group had its first public performance in October 2017, when it played two songs at a recital at McCaskey High School. The 10-member band has played at various venues in Lancaster County and at Lancaster city’s New Year’s Eve event in 2018. Local artist Loryn Spangler-Jones will also create artwork available for purchase as she paints on site during the concert. A mixed media artist, Spangler-Jones exhibits locally and is the founder of LSJ Studios in downtown Lancaster. Her work can be found in several different publications, from major art magazines to coffee table art books. All proceeds will go to MFE. The Walk-O Taco and Reunion food trucks will be on-site, and beverages will be available from Tellus360. All proceeds from a commemorative beverage cup and collection buckets will be donated to MFE. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free, though donations will be accepted for MFE. The concert is produced by Amy Banks of Robin-Banks Entertainment and Paul Green, in conjunction with the City of Lancaster, and is sponsored by Wenger Wealth.
