“Christmas In July” Event Set For July 23 By Dayna M. Reidenouer

For the past seven years, the residents of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, have hosted a Christmas in July event to collect school supplies for students in need in Lancaster County. While the collection drive usually ran for several weeks and culminated in one special event, this year’s Christmas in July will be held on one day only. “We wanted to try something new,” explained event chair Stephanie Kaufhold. She is supported in planning the event by six committees that each have at least five residents. Over the past seven years, Christmas in July efforts raised $14,000 for the purchase of uniforms for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students, collected approximately the same amount in school supply donations,

and generated $4,500 to purchase school supplies. This year, rather than earmark proceeds and cash donations, the event will raise money for the Families in Transition (FIT) program, which serves SDoL and the other districts in Lancaster County. FIT staff members will take care of purchasing uniforms and school supplies for students whose families cannot afford them. “This will provide more flexibility for the school districts,” said financial committee member Dennis Good. “They can decide where to divvy up the funds.” The Christmas in July celebration will be held on Tuesday, July 23, in the Gamber Auditorium of the VIVA Centre on Woodcrest Villa’s campus. Bidding on the silent auction items will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. Entertainment, which will be a mixture of music and other

In August 2009, Charles held a bake sale to benefit a family member and a co-worker who had breast cancer. Several more fundraisers and contributions to a local cancer medical center filled the following years. In 2012, Help the Fight received its official nonprofit status, and the organization’s focus turned to helping individuals. In the past decade, Help the Fight has supported more than 700 people, with close to 200 people receiving assistance in the past year. Folks with breast cancer may receive up to $500 once per calendar year. The majority of gifts go toward medical bills, rent or mortgage payments, and utilities. Additionally, Help the Fight also supports cancer screenings, whether that is in the form of genetic testing for family members of people with breast cancer or subsidizing the cost of 3D mammograms when traditional mammograms are not offered by a facility for baseline testing. “We make sure all those facilities know we are here to help pay that difference,” Charles said. Help the Fight is focused on assisting people who live in Lancaster County, although it has

helped folks living in surrounding counties. As part of the application process, a letter from an applicant’s oncologist is required for approval for assistance. “We are people helping people, and we want to help as many people as we can,” Charles said. “We’re trying to increase our public awareness. Not only are we here to help, but we’re here if you’re looking for a place to shelter your donation.” Help the Fight runs small fundraising events each month and one major event - a banquet and auction - each year. This year’s banquet and auction will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 4:30 to 10 p.m. at Spooky Nook Sports, 2913 Spooky Nook Road, Manheim. The buffet meal will feature chicken piccata, carved flank steak, and vegetable lasagna, along with several sides and desserts. Two cash bars will be available. Auctions will be both live and silent, and Help the Fight is soliciting donations of goods and services to be sold at the event. Desired items include gift certificates to local eateries and attractions, gift baskets, weekend getaways, tickets to sporting events, children’s toys and crafts, fine art, jewelry,

home accessories, furniture, and men’s and women’s fashions. “It’s not a pink event. There will be things for men and women,” Charles emphasizeed. The organization is also seeking volunteers and sponsors for the event. Five levels of sponsorship have been set, and exclusive underwriting opportunities are available as well. Sponsorships must be confirmed by Saturday, Aug. 31, to be included in the event program, on an event banner, on Help the Fight’s website, and on a digital display at the event. Charles noted that the banquet and auction is a fun night; dress is business casual so attendees can relax and enjoy themselves. Radio host Melanie Gardner will be the master of ceremonies. Charles added that the pace of the event will keep moving, the auctioneer is a “total hoot,” and there will be a minimal amount of speechmaking. Approximately 10 minutes will be given to guest speaker Randall Oyer, who is the medical director of the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. Tickets for admission to the event may be purchased through Saturday, Sept. 14. “We’re hoping to ... attract as many people as possible,” Charles said. “We value public support. Starting in 2020, the Pennsylvania Food Code will require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager, and such a person must be on-site at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift must become certified. To help food establishments to meet this requirement, Penn State Extension will offer a ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Room 149, Lancaster, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, July 18 and 25. The certification exam will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1. The course will help participants learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling, and serving food. Proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities will also be covered. After completing the course and passing the multiplechoice exam with a 75 percent or higher score, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification is good for five years. The course fee covers the cost of the most recent edition of the “ServSafe Manager” book, as well as the exam, answer sheet, and learning materials. Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) will present the Tony Award-winning musical “Evita” for its first show in the Eater Theater, the new main-stage theater at the Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. Performances are scheduled for Friday to Sunday, July 19 to 21; Friday to Sunday, July 26 to 28; and Thursday to Sunday, Aug. 1 to 4, at the Marietta Center for the Arts. A series of flashbacks follows Eva from her start as an impoverished child and teenager to how she became a woman of influence and power as the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón. Eva was first lady from 1946 until she died in 1952 at the age of 33. “Eva is adored and worshipped by so many people. She came from absolutely nothing and worked herself to the top, not always making the best choices along the way, but I think her heart was always behind it,” said Tighe Howey. “It is one of those dream roles to get into, and it’s a little nervewracking,” she continued. “I admire her as a woman because she found a way to rise in a world where women just weren’t leaders. Her husband was in charge, but she kind of ruled the roost.” Additional cast members will include Kevin Ditzler as Juan Perón, Jared Korb as Che, Joe Kelly as Magaldi, and Cara Ditzler as the Mistress. In addition to being the home of SSC, the Marietta Center for the Arts serves as a hub for educational opportunities with artfocused classes offered year-round for children and adults. After Dustin Smith graduated from Hempfield High School in 2007, he was excited to head to the University of Central Florida to study electrical engineering. “He was very, very smart, and he was excited to be taking some advanced courses. During that first week of classes, he called me and said he didn’t feel good,” said Dustin’s mother, Christine Hogan. “He was a gamer, and he said that he couldn’t even play games because his hands weren’t feeling right.” Hogan urged Dustin to go to the campus infirmary, and from there he was admitted into a hospital in Orlando. “He had surgery that night because they found a grapefruit-sized tumor on his brain,” recalled Hogan, who was able to fly to Orlando to be with her son. Dustin was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that typically affects people

ages 10 to 20. He returned to Pennsylvania to receive treatment at Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey. After a courageous battle, Dustin passed away on Christmas Day in 2011 at age 23. “We were so fortunate to live near Hershey. Everyone there is absolutely wonderful. Their staff was so accommodating, and they really treat the whole person,” Hogan remarked. Four Diamonds helped to cover Dustin’s medical expenses that were not covered by insurance, and now Hogan continues to raise money to give back to Four Diamonds and pay it forward in any way that she can. Hogan is part of the Susquehanna Indian Motorcycle Riders Group (IMRG) 1903, a nonprofit motorcycle riding group based out of Hernley’s Polaris-Indian Motorcycle in Elizabethtown. Susquehanna IMRG 1903 has been fundraising solely for Four Diamonds for the past three years through silent auctions and holiday cake roll sales, and now the group is hosting a special motorcycle ride to benefit Four Diamonds and its efforts to support local cancer patients and their families. On Saturday, July 20, the community is invited to a One on One With 2018 American Flat Track champion Jared Mees. Spots are limited to 50 motorcycles to take part in an exclusive ride that will begin and end at Hernley’s PolarisIndian Motorcycle, 2095 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. Hernley’s

sponsors Mees, who is a six-time Grand National champion, twotime X Games gold medalist, and two-time Troy Bayliss Classic winner. He was named Cycle News Rider of the Year in 2017. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., and the ride will begin at 12:30 p.m. “Generally a guest for a ride like this will be in the beginning of the pack, but Jared’s going to start in the back and keep moving up through the group to ride with each of the participants,” Hogan explained. The ride will follow country roads and covered bridges to Mees’ hometown of Honey Brook, where participants will stop at a restaurant owned by Mees’ grandfather. Once everyone returns to Hernley’s, a steak dinner will be served. Mees will continue to interact with riders. “It’s more of that intimate conversation, and he’s willing to answer any questions,” said Hogan. Separate prices have been set for the rider VIP experience, passenger VIP experience, rideonly rider, and ride-only passenger. Two Lancaster County rescue groups, Furever Home Adoption Center and the Pet Pantry, are once again partnering to raise funds and awareness for homeless animals, expand the Pet Food Bank Program, and offer low-cost spay/neuter/vaccination programs and low-cost mobile veterinary clinics and discounted veterinary services for animals. The fifth annual Summer Shopping Fair will be held on Saturday, July 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The vendor and craft fair will include more than 100 local businesses, unique crafters, vendors, food, and more. This free, family-friendly, pet-friendly event will be held inside, rain or shine. The first 100 adult attendees will receive a free goodie bag filled with magazines, special offers, coupons, samples, and more. Food and supply donations are being requested for both rescue groups. Dry cat and dog food in any brand or size is especially needed, as well as cleaning supplies such as bleach, paper towels, toilet paper, and more. For each donation given at the event, donors will be given a free ticket for a giveaway drawing. A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. Preschool Will Host Open House Veritas Preschool at Highland, located at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. The Hempfield Woman’s Club Inc. recently awarded two $1,200 scholarships to Jenny Tsui and Mallory Wonders, graduating seniors at Hempfield High School. At Hempfield, Jenny was involved with the Chinese Club, where she held officer positions such as historian and vice president. She participated in Homework Club, helping schoolchildren with their homework. She was a member of National Honor Society and Anchor Club. She has volunteered at Women and Babies Hospital, and she plans to attend Drexel University as a nursing major. She aspires to become a nurse practitioner with a specialty in pediatrics. During her years at Hempfield, Mallory was an English as a Second Language tutor and was president of the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She plays the piano. She plans to attend Millersville University to major in elementary education with a minor in American Sign Language (ASL). She then plans to enroll at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in New York to become certified as a teacher of the deaf. She aspires

to introduce ASL as a language in high school. The scholarships are funded through fundraising efforts of club members. They sponsor the biannual flea markets held at Amos Herr Park in Landisville on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. The club has awarded scholarships totaling more than $66,400 to Hempfield High School seniors for approximately 30 years and has also made donations to many local charities for more than 40 years.

The organization also supports pets in just over 200 households, providing food so that the animals do not have to be surrendered because of financial need. The Pet Pantry provides subsidized veterinary services to clients with financial needs who are referred by their primary veterinarians. “We take care of immediate needs, then they go back to their regular vets,” Langlois explained.

The basic tier will admit folks to the event and give them access to light barbecue fare and one serving of beer or wine each, as well as giant Jenga and Connect Four games. The top tier will include the same benefits of the basic tier, with the addition of two hours of throwing time. Stumpy’s will provide training to everyone who will be throwing. Zhang will play Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B-flat Minor; Chopin’s Etude Op. 1, No. 1 in C Major; Beethoven’s Sonata No. 7 in D Major; Chopin’s Ballade No. 1; and works by Brahms and Rachmaninoff. Friends In Action International (FIA) has been busy at its U.S. headquarters in Middletown. The facility is the hub for FIA’s strategic planning, fundraising, and support efforts that enable local volunteers to complete construction projects in extremely remote nations of the world while the Gospel is shared with those who have never heard it. More than 80 percent of FIA’s headquarters staff is voluntary or supported by private funding, resulting in more donated dollars going directly to the indigenous people FIA serves. In May, during FIA’s first Children’s Day, six children helped stuff and seal envelopes with The

Challenge, FIA’s quarterly newsletter distributed to more than 3,000 supporters. More than 50 veterans and friends celebrated Memorial Day by attending FIA’s veteran appreciation breakfast. In addition, Barry Horst has begun as a shipping and warehouse manager, and Kimberly Horst has joined FIA as a human resources associate. This summer, the staff is organizing volunteer work trips to benefit the Rama Cay people of Nicaragua through biblical training sessions, as well as construction of a laundry and shower house and a playground. Planning for upcoming trips to Vanuatu also continues toward construction efforts on a base

camp to house volunteers beginning a water project to benefit the NiVan people. Board members from across the nation, as well as Canada, will converge at the FIA headquarters during mid-August to review progress updates on more than 10 projects from the six countries in which FIA ministers, as well as set a vision for the next six months of outreach. Mya Higgins earned the Harriet Tubman Award, which is the level award for Pioneers (ages 12 to 14). Mya is the daughter of Brad and Tammy Higgins of Lancaster. For this award, a girl must earn a minimum of one badge from each frontier at the Pioneer level, perform a minimum of 15 hours of service for each year of participation, attend multiple special events, and mentor a younger unit or group by holding a regular meeting as well as planning and organizing a special event for that group. Additionally, she must spend a minimum of 10 hours in planning, organizing, and implementing a multi-troop or community outreach activity. The final step is a Board of Review interview. A fundraising drive, called the Atlee Hall Drive to $1 Million Challenge, helped raise more than $200,000 for the endowment in the past six months. The law firm provided the initial gift in the drive, which kicked off in January. The Schreiber Endowment Fund is part of the organization’s strategy to strengthen its long-term financial position.
