The Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club will meet on Saturday, July 21. Annual Festival To Take Place In Washington Boro By Dayna M. Reidenouer
A tradition spanning six decades will continue when the Washington Boro Tomato Festival takes place on Saturdays, July 14 and 21. The event will be held at the Washington Boro Park, which is located at the intersection of Penn Street (Route 999) and Water Street (Route 441). On both nights, food will be available beginning at 4 p.m., and the fun will run from 5 to 9 p.m. Country band Borderline will perform on July 14, and Stu Huggens and the Black Hats will play at the festival on July 21. Event co-chair Dick Schock noted that the latter band’s repertoire contains a mix of country, oldies, and a
little bit of everything else. He expressed the hope that the variety of music would appeal to a broader segment of the population. Schock continues to be on the lookout for quality bands that fit within the event’s budget. “I would love to get a bluegrass group in here,” he remarked. Affordability is important, as the Tomato Festival is the only fundraiser held by the support group of Blue Rock Fire Rescue. While the fire department is funded by Manor Township and Millersville borough, the support group occasionally assists with purchasing additional equipment, and it hosts an annual banquet for volunteers. Recently, the support group provided money for the acquisition of a new squad vehicle that transports volunteers and water rescue gear and pulls a trailer with a boat when the watercraft is needed. For the sixth summer in a row, Marietta Community Chapel will offer its Just for Kicks activity program to area children. What started out as a onetime event specifically for children who had been affected by a flood and were staying with their families in a temporary shelter later morphed into the idea for a regularly planned outdoor event. Neighborhood children would walk by and join in the fun, and organizer Deb Sauder said that inspired the vision for an annual event. See Youth Program pg 3

Through Saturday, Aug. 11, visitors may view “Amending America: The Bill of Rights,” a traveling exhibition on loan from the National Archives. The exhibit explores the Bill of Rights, the process of changing the U.S. Constitution, and why Americans have reached consensus to amend the Constitution only 27 times out of more than 11,000 attempts. In conjunction with the exhibition, a Summer Storytime Series and a tour will be offered. Story times will take place every Tuesday at 11 a.m. through Tuesday, Aug. 7. Children will hear stories about civil rights, freedom, creating the U.S. Constitution, and what it means to be an American. Children will also have opportunities to take part in historythemed activities and crafts. The program is designed for children age 3 and up, but is ideal for elementary school children. LancasterHistory.org National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship recipient Dr. Damayanthie Eluwawalage will examine the rationale behind individual and collective clothing practices and choices from 1600 to 1900 in Pennsylvania and how internal and external influences such as global events, ideology, and society impacted Pennsylvanians’ way of dressing, their societal attitudes, and their social demeanor. Eluwawalage is a researcher, author, historian, private pilot, and designer from Reading. She earned her interdisciplinary Ph.D. in design and history from Edith Cowan University in Australia and a Bachelor of Arts in design from the Curtin University of Technology in Australia. She is a professional historian who specializes in costume history. Her current scholarly research focuses on a

Extension Will Offer ServSafe Penn State Extension will offer the National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe course at the Lancaster County Extension Office located in the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, July 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 24, from 9 to 1 p.m. After attending the class sessions and passing the multiple choice exam with a 75 percent or greater, participants will receive a ServSafe certificate, which meets the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s requirement for food safety certification. During the course, participants will receive information related to preventing cross-contamination, as well as safe handling of food, temperature control, cleaning and sanitization, proper storage, and pest control, in addition to other relevant topics. The shirt color designates which soccer team they will be part of, allowing children to recognize their teammates on the field. Program instructors will be youths and adults from Marietta Community Chapel. Heidi Newswanger, who just graduated from Eastern University with a degree in early childhood education, will lead the crafts. Jeremy Newswanger will oversee the children on the soccer field. Jeremy plays soccer at Houghton College, where he will be a junior. LaRie Miller will present story time, which organizers said proved to be a good addition to last year’s program. Harnish said that between 10 to 20 children attended each of the nights last summer, and some of those children are already signed up to return this year. The things do not have to necessarily be historical, and the purposes of the items may be unknown. “I should have a couple pieces of metal that I found digging around in my garden,� Gerber remarked. “I have no idea what they are, but maybe someone else will.� Items do not have to be related to Millersville. Gerber noted that during the inaugural showand-tell event, he displayed a coin dispenser that he used when collecting the 24-cent fee for a York newspaper. Individuals who wish to participate are not required to reserve space ahead of time. They may simply show up with their things and be prepared to chat about them. Gerber would like to have a significant turnout, and he is hopeful, based on the event’s history.
“People really liked last year’s. It was bigger than before,� Gerber said. “I’d like to see it grow.� The MAHS holds monthly meetings that are open to the public, but it invites interested folks to join. Currently, membership is close to 115 people and entities. There is a small annual fee to join, with family and lifetime rates, as well as a cost for organizations. “An awful lot of people are interested in history, at least local history, and people come, so we know we have filled a niche,� Gerber commented. He noted that most attendees are age 50 or older, but younger people are welcome. There is no cost to attend the show-and-tell event, but donations will be appreciated. The Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) recently announced the results of its nationwide election of officers for the year. Local resident Dr. Paul H. Cunningham was elected president. Cunningham is a McCaskey High School Class of 1948 alumnus. He enlisted in the Air Force after graduation and served four years, including 17 months at duty stations in Korea as a radar repair technician. Cunningham was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant in 1952. Upon his return to Lancaster, he received his bachelor’s degree from Millersville University and begain teaching at Hempfield High School. He later earned master’s and doctoral degrees from Temple University, and he took the position of superintendent of schools for Dorchester County, Md. Cunningham and his wife, Ruth, live in East Hempfield Township.

Bronze Well Workplace Awards were given to East Lampeter Township, Keystone Custom Homes, and VisionCorps. To receive a Well Workplace Award, companies complete the Worksite Health Scorecard created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Worksite Health Scorecard is a comprehensive tool that employers can use to evaluate whether they have implemented evidence-based health promotion interventions or strategies in their worksites. Many of the Well Workplace Award winners have used the scorecard for years to set goals for improving their workplace wellness offerings. The Well Workplace Awards were first given in 2010. Applications are available in February of each year, and the Awards are distributed at the Health Summit in May.

Crowd Funding Effort Posted The Lancaster Heritage Press Museum and The .918 Club will help raise funds for the Heritage Press Education Center for the preservation and promotion of letterpress printing and book arts. Once operational, the center will teach technology similar to that which goes back to the 15th century when Gutenberg produced his famous Bible. Through member and company donations, almost $55,000 of the $157,000 needed to completely finish the center on the branch campus of the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology has been raised. A goal of $40,000 has been set using an online crowd funding site to fund the next phase of the renovations necessary to meet building and safety codes and to equip a state-of-the art classroom in the 1950s-era former Naval Reserve training center. Penn State Extension’s new Latin American Cuisine Comes to You program will be offered on Thursdays, July 12 to 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Penn State Extension Lebanon County, 2120 Cornwall Road No. 1, Lebanon. At each class, useful cooking tips, opportunities to taste different types of recipes and foods from Chile, Argentina, and Peru, and seasonings from the region will be offered. Guided class discussions and applications help will conclude each class. The class will cover preparing food that highlighs Chilean, Argentinian, and Peruvian recipes and culture; preparing simple, delicious recipes that fit with a healthy lifestyle; selecting and preparing fish and shellfish for quality, safety, healthfulness, sustainability, and
price; and designing a healthy lifestyle, highlighting fruits, vegetables, whole grains, cheese, fish, and shellfish from the region and locally. Anchor Club Receives Recognition The Hempfield High School (HHS) Anchor Club, a service club, was awarded the Pilot International (PI) Northeast-Potomac District Anchor Club of the Year Award for the fourth year in a row. Additionally, for the third consecutive year, the group was awarded an Anchor International Club of the Year recognition, third place this year, for clubs with 41 or more members. The festival will offer opportunities to win a 55-inch television, a kayak, an electronic tablet, and 10 $100 prizes. Folks may enter the drawings on both nights, and the winners will be selected in a drawing on July 21. Winners do not need to be present for the drawing. At the festival, the support group will profit from games and the sale of food. Games will include a dime pitch and stands where competitors may win candy, cakes, fruit baskets, and goldfish. “The kids like that,” support group vice president Brenda Miller said of the goldfish stand. She did not indicate whether parents like it. The food options will include hot dogs and sauerkraut, burgers, beef barbecue, sausage sandwiches, and soft-serve ice cream. Chicken corn soup will be available for takeout as well as for eating at the event. Customers may bring their own containers if they wish. A vendor will sell fries and funnel cakes. The tomato sandwiches and BLTs made with locally grown produce are the highlight of the festival. “People wait in line (for a long time); it’s amazing,” Miller commented. “They do that because they look forward to it.” Folks may purchase locally grown tomatoes and fruit from stands at the festival. Event T-shirts will also be for sale.
“Rolling River Rampage” VBS Slated Stehman Memorial United Methodist Church, 485 Indian Run Road, Millersville, will hold a “Rolling River Rampage” vacation Bible school (VBS) from Monday to Friday, July 9 to 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. daily. National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF): Pathways to STEM, at Westtown Preparatory School in West Chester. NYLF: Pathways to STEM is part of the Envision family of programs that enable students to explore their interests and experience learning beyond the classroom. Ty enjoys math and science as well as participating in his special interest class. A member of the Farmdale 24 team, he recently competed in the district level and moved on to compete against 80 other students from school districts across Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Ty has expressed interest in working for the FBI in the future, as he hopes to use his abilities of analyzing a situation and making the world a better place. Ty is looking forward to gaining the hands-on criminal investigation experience that the forum provides. The Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) has announced the hiring of two new management staff members. Kim McDevitt has joined LHOP as chief operating officer, and Jake Thorsen is the new SoWe neighborhood director. McDevitt comes to LHOP with more than 20 years of executive and management leadership experience, including her most recent position, executive director at Power Packs Project. While there, she oversaw the growth of the organization, which under her leadership had programming in two counties and served more than 2,400 families. At LHOP, McDevitt will have operational oversight and responsibilities in team and program development, project management, fundraising, and marketing. On May 7, Thorsen took over as SoWe neighborhood director after the retirement of Jim Shultz. Thorsen graduated with a
bachelor’s degree from SUNY Buffalo and a master’s degree from Syracuse University. He has experience in community and neighborhood development through service as an AmeriCorps volunteer and having served with a land bank and neighborhood organizations. SoWe is a resident-driven organization in the southwest community of Lancaster and is under the umbrella of LHOP. In 2016, the Southwest Lancaster Revitalization Strategy was developed and implementation funds awarded by the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation. In his new position, Thorsen works with SoWe residents and stakeholders. LHOP has 11 full-time and two seasonal part-time staff. It has offices in Lancaster, York and the SoWe neighborhood. LHOP also operates an eight-county regional loan fund known as the Local Housing Investment Fund and Trust (LHIFT) of South Central PA.

Elks Raise Funds To Aid Veterans The Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 has announced that it has raised $10,000 for Mission 22. The donation was the result of several fundraisers and donations from fellow fraternal organizations like the American Legion in Columbia, which contributed $2,000. The fundraiser was championed by the Columbia-Middletown 1074 Elks veterans service commission and Sue Zeamer, a veterans service commission member and ambassador for Mission 22. Three veterans started Mission 22 because of their personal battles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The organization provides information to veterans to help
