They will be evaluated by a panel of judges in the categories of Visual, Music, and Effect and various subcategories. Three of the five competing corps finished among the top five in the 2018 Drum Corps Associates (DCA) World Championships, including the reigning champion, the Reading Buccaneers. A limited budget or scant vacation time does not have to mean a dismal summer. In fact, local folks may virtually go around the world in just four hours at the 24th annual Global Fair set for Saturday, July 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Hosted by Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM), Global Fair is an international missions and culture event, but it has been updated for 2019. It will still include information about other cultures, opportunities to talk to mission workers and hear their stories about God at work around the world, international food from a wide variety of countries, and activities for children. “Ride it, push it, tow it - we’ll accept it,” said Lancaster County Cruisers member Gary Heim of Willow Street, inviting owners of cars, trucks, and motorcycles to enter the club’s 20th annual car show on Saturday, July 6. In addition to no requirement for the
vehicle to be operational, there are no rules regarding age, make, or model. “Bring anything; we don’t discriminate,” said club vice president Jack Parke of New Providence. “We get some cool hot rods and rat rods,” club member Barry Harsh of Mountville commented. “Even some barn finds,” Parke added. Students, faculty, and community members participated in the Hempfield High School Mini-THON main event held on May 18 and 19 at the high school. Activities included dancing, games, giveaway drawings, and a luminaria walk. Hempfield Mini-THON is a yearlong fundraising event led by Hempfield High School to benefit Four Diamonds, aiding in the fight against pediatric cancer. The MiniTHON raised a grand total of $84,422 during the 2018-19 school year. Hempfield has raised more than $690,000 since the

It might be surreal to think of vehicles from the 1980s and 1990s as classic or antique cars, but according to the Pennsylvania Code, an antique vehicle is any that has been manufactured more than 25 years prior to the current year. “It’s amazing; when people want to get an antique, they usually go for these,” Teeter said, gesturing to Harsh’s 1966 Chevelle SS and Heim’s 1966 Dodge Charger. Then he pointed to his Honda, saying, “But these are really coming of age.” The public is invited to view whatever shows up at the event, which will be held at the Willow Street Fireman’s Field, 2821 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, from

There is a cost to exhibit a vehicle, with a discount for those who register before the event. Spectators will be admitted free of charge, but they are asked to bring nonperishable food items for the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. A portion of the proceeds from entrance fees will also go to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. Dash plaques will be given to the first 200 entries. Harsh estimated that approximately 315 vehicles were entered in last year’s show. “That’s not counting ours,” he said. “Our cars aren’t judged.” All of the prizes are reserved for nonmembers. “We have loads of trophies, cash prizes, and tons of door prizes,” Parke remarked. A disc jockey will play oldies music, and there will be a muffler rap competition. Food
2019 Luminate Lancaster Set Luminate Lancaster, an annual fundraiser to benefit the Pregnancy and Postpartum Mental Health of Lancaster County Fund at LOHF (Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation), will be held on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to noon. The family-friendly hike will begin at Pavilion 32 in Buchmiller Park, 60 Buchmiller Park Drive, Lancaster.
The Pregnancy and Postpartum Mental Health of Lancaster County Fund will be used to provide financial assistance to women experiencing a perinatal mood disorder to seek counseling services that they otherwise would not be able to afford; to provide postpartum doula support services to women experiencing a perinatal mood
disorder who otherwise would not be able to afford the services; and to train medical providers, including but not limited to family doctors, pediatricians, mental health professionals, OB/GYNs, doulas, childbirth educators, nurses, midwives, lactations consultants, and others, to screen and treat pregnant and postpartum women for

Celebrate Lancaster, the annual celebration of Lancaster’s culture and diversity, will take place on Friday, June 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the 000 and 100 blocks of North Queen Street. “We’re pretty much here whenever people need us, which is kind of a nice reputation to have,” said Columbia Food Bank director Danielle Peters. And lately the community has turned out in spades to return that favor by supporting the food bank and its efforts. The community’s efforts in May were particularly impressive. “We had an amazing month,” Peters shared. “Every Saturday in May there (was) a food drive for us.” The Mountville Lions Club kicked things off with its biannual food drive at Musser’s Markets, followed by the post office food drive the next weekend. On May 18, St. John’s Herr Estate collected nonperishable food items for the Columbia Food Bank as part of its Red, White, and Blueberry Jamboree. “That was a new one for us, and it was a pretty sweet deal,” said Peters with a laugh, explaining, “If you brought 10 items in for the food bank, you got a free piece of blueberry pie.” Rounding out the month was a food drive on May 25 organized by Reformation Lutheran Church in Lancaster. “It has been amazing. I just can’t get over it,” Peters said. Located in the fellowship hall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 340 Locust St., the

According to Ollar, the Columbia Food Bank distributed more than 25,000 pounds of food from January to April. In 2018, more than 65,000 pounds of food was handed out, and Ollar is projecting that number will increase to more than 73,000 pounds for 2019. More than 6,000 pounds of food items was collected through the food drives in May, yet there is still a need for continuing donations in the months to come. Nonperishable food donations may be delivered to the church during food bank operating hours between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, or folks may call 717-449-5101 to schedule a time. More volunteers are always welcome, particularly in the summer months - a season that Peters noted is an extra busy time for the food bank. Columbia Food Bank serves residents of Columbia, Mountville, and West Hempfield and Manor townships who are in need of food assistance. “We’ve been in existence for over 30 years, and it started out as a hot lunch program for the Episcopal Ladies … but they soon realized something more was needed by the community,” explained Peters, who has served as the director for 14 years. “What we try to do here is say, ‘Hi, come in, sit down, and tell us your story.’ And everyone that comes through our doors has a story.” Connecting on a relational level is a vital part of the screening process for the staff and volunteers at the Columbia Food Bank. “It’s the idea of talking to our clients. The more we can know them, the more we can try to help them,” Peters said. “Food for the body is a given, but sometimes you just need food for your soul and to know that somebody is going to see you,” continued Peters. “What grounds me and my volunteers is that consistency of connection.” Staying grounded is certainly a necessity, as the organization is one of the two largest food pantries in the county, second only to the downtown Lancaster County Food Hub, formerly known as the Lancaster County Council of Churches. In addition to Peters and assistant director Suzanne Ollar, the team at the Columbia Food Bank is made up of approximately 20 volunteers ranging from age 7 to 92. Some help out once a month while others are there every day that the food bank is open to clients. “It looks like

He noted that drum corps are different from marching bands because they do not use woodwinds. “This produces a distinctive full and bold sound. And since drum corps spend an entire season performing a single show, their execution level is quite high,” Thomson added. “This leads to the description of drum corps as ‘marching bands on steroids.’” Also unlike most marching bands, membership is not restricted to high school or college students. Drum corps members can range in age from early teens to over 50, although Thomson noted that over the years, the average age of many all-age corps has lowered. “Clearly, one of the criteria is for members to be able to handle the rigors
of today’s fast-paced marching and the overall physical and time demands of practice and performing,” he said. The competition will feature drum corps from four states, including Atlanta CV from Atlanta; the Bushwackers from Princeton, N.J.; the Skyliners from Scranton; the White Sabers from Dansville, N.Y.; and the Buccaneers. The performances will wrap up with the Reading Buccaneer Alumni Corps and the Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Corps. Thomson explained that the alumni corps offer opportunities for folks to participate without the stress and time-consuming schedule of a competitive group. After a drum major retreat and awards ceremony, the event is expected to conclude by 10 p.m. There is a cost to attend the show, with

The 202nd festival, which will be held on Thursday, July 4, will feature live music, special entertainment for children, a designated space for teenagers, an Eagles tribute band, and a chance to relax with family and friends in Lititz Springs Park, 18 N. Broad St., Lititz. The gates to the park, on Broad Street in Lititz, will open at noon on July 4. Master of ceremonies duties this year will be performed by Jenna Martorana, who has experience as the 2019 Miss Liberty Bell. “She was formerly Miss Red Rose City 2018,” said Martin. “We are very excited to have Jenna be an integral part of the celebration in Lititz.” Opening ceremonies will be held at 1:30 p.m. Activities will begin in the KidsZone at 12:30 p.m. with a performance by Papa Tater, followed by a Springs Park Playhouse show at 2 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., children will be treated to the music of Ian Carroll. “He is a one-man band,” said DeKarske, who added that the interactive entertainer will bring bongos and tambourines so that children can take part in the show. Aware that many young people attend the event, organizers will set up an area specifically for teenagers and young adults. “The Lawn is a new area that we are adding this year,” noted Martin, who relayed that the new space is a response to feedback from the community. “The Lawn will be set up (for teenagers) from 5 to 8 p.m. around the Oehme Gazebo near the front of the park,”

The BANDALOW will play in the band shell at 2:15 p.m., and the Lititz Community Band will perform at 3:30 p.m. A tribute band called Best of the Eagles will play in the band shell at 5:30 p.m. Following the tribute band, the entertainment will move to the field at the Lititz recCenter, where the band Nearly York will play at 8:15 p.m., followed by a FUN 101.3 disc jockey dance party with Ronnie Ramone at 9 p.m. The 78th Queen of the Candles Pageant will be held in the band shell at 7:30 p.m., and the fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. The layout of the area where the fireworks will be set off will change significantly this year,
according to Martin. “There will be a new gate to access the fireworks field at the Lititz recCenter,” said Martin. “The running of the blankets will take place from this gate beginning at 7:30 a.m. Guests coming in later in the day just for fireworks should use this gate. Other gates … will begin closing as early as 8 p.m.” Attendees will make their way to the field at about 8 p.m. so that park staff and volunteers can secure a safety area inside the park. “Maple Street will be closed to vehicles all day on July 4,” added Martin. “This will allow … guests to exit the field out onto Maple Street.” Martin emphasized that detailed maps, instructions, signage, and additional volunteers will be available to help attendees with questions. “We are always looking for more volunteers,” added Martin. “Volunteers get a free wristband … for helping with just one shift.” Individuals who are interested in volunteering may email lspgates@gmail.com. I believe when there’s more opportunity for appreciation and awareness, it can result in increased kindness and love for one another.” Parking will be free of charge, and admission will be by donation. Proceeds will be used to fund the fair in future years. There will be Korean music, drumming, and dancing as well as several other international acts.” A highlight for children - as well as adult visitors - over the years has been the alpacas brought by Eastland Alpacas. The fiber animals will return to Global Fair again. Joining the alpacas will be “residents” from the Nature Center at Black Rock Retreat in Quarryville, which may include snakes, turtles, lizards, a rabbit, and a bird. Children will have the opportunity to earn free ice cream through a scavenger hunt while they are also learning about the world. Another change to Global Fair is a different layout. Rather than organizing the fair into geographic regions as in the past, there will be four new areas: The lively Global Village will feature workers from around the world and various community organizations. The Adventure Zone will have the petting zoo and children’s activities. The World Stage will offer entertainment throughout the day. The International Food Court will
