The hugs started almost as soon as the members of Vocal Harmonix gathered at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, for a rehearsal on June 10. One woman had recently received a cancer diagnosis. Another had returned from traveling. Yet another had had surgery. Whether the reason was positive or upsetting, the embraces abounded. “We’re a very caring group,” one member explained after the rehearsal concluded, again

with hugs, this time for the group’s newest member, who was voted in that night. “Our sisterhood is very strong,” agreed director Lori Jo Whitehaus. “This is like a big family.” Currently, members range in age from early 20s to 91, and while there is a rigorous audition process to get in, it is unheard of to be kicked out, one octogenarian said. One of the goals of 4-H is to prepare young people for the future. Thanks to recent weather, some 4-H members who raised strawberries learned firsthand about the ups and downs of growing produce. On June 5, the Rotary
Club of Lancaster hosted the annual 4-H Strawberry Roundup at the Farm and Home Center. Ten youths ranging between ages 8 and 19 entered the best berries from their patches for adjudication. Lancaster, arranged for her sisters and their father to meet her at Oregon Dairy when Family Farm Days opened on June 11. “I remember coming as a kid, and I wanted to share the fun and the chocolate milk with my daughter,” she explained. Adelaide Fernandez, 10 months, appeared to be having a blast as she munched on chicken tenders and french fries, licked up vanilla ice cream, and dug through field corn at a sensory table. Her cousins, 3-year-old Ellison Stafford and 18-monthold Whitfield Stafford of Philadelphia, also enjoyed themselves. The brothers particularly liked seeing the pot-bellied pigs, a young steer, and two breeds of chickens. Riding in the tractorpulled wagons that shuttled visitors to and from the farm, as well as taking a barrel train ride, were highlights for the Staffords. “It’s a great family-oriented event,” Danelle’s sister, Darcy Stafford, said. “I was, of course, excited to see my family, and my children love seeing the farm.” Attendees of Family Farm Days, which ran through June 13, were treated to a tour of the dairy barn; samples of several types of beverages, including kombucha and two varieties of chocolate milk; educational performances in the barnyard theater; a petting zoo; a scavenger hunt; stream studies; and a mobile aquaponics lab. Dairy royalty was on hand, and there were several livestock-themed costumed characters wandering the grounds. Folks could also purchase rides on miniature ponies and full-sized horses and take turns at a corn launcher. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding was slated to visit on June 13. Among the numerous exhibits from farm-related organizations, Master Gardeners Dyan Eisenberger and Jane Kintzi staffed a display from Penn

Although some people think it is pretty, with white and red black-spotted wings, it destroys crops and particularly impacts the grape, hardwood, tree fruit, landscape, and nursery industries. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture are both working to keep the insect contained. A quarantine order has been issued, requiring all items moving within or out of the area to be inspected so that the transport of any living life stage of the pest can be prevented. “It’s hatching from April to July, so people will start seeing them,” Eisenberger said. The nymphs start at about a quarter-inch in size, but they grow to four times that size. Folks who see evidence of spotted lanternflies are asked to report them at http://extension.psu.edu/spotted -lanternfly. Family Farm Days proved to be an effective place to disseminate information about spotted lanternflies and other invasive species, including Ailanthus altissima, which is also known as the tree-of-heaven. “”People are seeking information, and that’s our job: to get the research-based information out there,” Kintzi said. And that - getting information out - was at the heart of Family Farm Days. A cooperative effort between Oregon Dairy Family Farm and the Lancaster County Agriculture Council, the event aimed to spread the word about farming and its importance for individuals and the community. Roger North Wins Chamber Award Roger North was named as Lancaster Chamber’s 2019 Small Businessperson of the Year. The award honors leaders who have significantly impacted the Lancaster community and economy with their outstanding leadership and ethical business practices. This distinction was presented at the Lancaster Chamber’s 147th annual dinner on May 30. North is founder and president of North Group Consultants. Established in 1997 as North & Schanz Consulting Group, the firm changed its name to North Group Consultants in 2006 when North was joined by partners Dennis Clemmer and Daryl Leisey. Growing demand and an expanded service line attracted additional partners Jerry Murray, Craig Schloneger, and Brian Black. North Group Consultants moved to its Lititz Springs Park office in 2017.

Nearly 50 volunteers took to the streets of downtown Lancaster’s business district on May 19 to hang 250 flowering baskets. The beautification effort, a project of LEADS (Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success) since 1999, advances the group’s mission to make the city a more attractive place to visit, shop, and live. The baskets are adopted by members of the community for a set donation, which includes daily watering and care for six months. explained Lori Little, 4-H Extension educator. Too much rain and several bouts of hail hampered the crops. The timing of the event also impacted the results. Project leader Ralph Ellenberger of Mount Joy noted that several growers had excellent crops the week before the roundup, but their plants had slowed production or quit producing altogether by June 5. “Some will be early, and others will be late,” he said pragmatically. “It’s a good learning experience for the kids,” said Michelle Anger of Maytown. Her daughters Gabby and Gracelynn are part of the Mount Joy Community 4-H Club and are raising strawberries. “There are a lot of life lessons: finances, hope, and disappointment,” Michelle added. Professional grower John Shenk evaluated the berries on flavor and looked for uniform size and color. “It’s nicer to have larger (berries), but it’s not necessary,” Shenk commented. “I think customers will come back for flavor.” The entrants were divided by experience. The berries exhibited by Amanda Ellenberger of Mount Joy netted her the grand champion ribbon in the older group, and Gabby received the same honor in the younger group. The reserve
grand champions were Justin Zimmerman of Elizabethtown and Callison Miller of Manheim, respectively. All of the strawberries were auctioned off to Rotary members. The Keller family has run the auction for 54 years and twice sold a quart of berries for $600. Amanda’s berries nearly reached that amount, selling for $550. Gabby’s berries sold for the second-highest amount: $225. As the proceeds from the auction went back to each exhibitor, the growers who had no berries to enter were given strawberry pies to sell. Several of the pies were accompanied by gift certificates for dinner that evening at The Loft. Additionally, the proceeds of two pies went to the Max Smith Scholarship Fund, and the Rotary club presented a $750 check to Little for the fund. Bad weather aside, both Shenk and Ralph noted that the number of entrants has declined in recent years. Shenk entered the roundup as a child, and he recalls competing against at least two dozen other young people. “Fewer kids live on farms,” Ralph pointed out. “They have less space for a garden. It’s a challenge to get the quantity of strawberries (needed for the roundup).”

The roundup provides growers with the opportunity to have their fresh berries evaluated. When all of the community clubs come together for the showcase in August, the growers will submit other strawberryrelated projects. First-year members, who have spent the spring and summer weeding and mulching their plants in preparation for a crop the following year, will enter posters. The older members can make things like recipe or trivia cards or enter carefully tended potted plants. While giving his reasons for ranking the berries, Shenk gave some tips about raising strawberries. “Usually the first harvest is the best, but you can keep them for three years if they’re managed well,” he said. After the harvest is over, the plants should be mowed and the rows narrowed so there is room for the plants to grow back. “From Labor Day to the first hard freeze, the cells are deciding which will be berries and which will be leaves,” Shenk said. “It’s not too late (to plant now) for next year. The DUI Council of Lancaster County has unveiled its latest billboard created by the Leaders of Future Generations Program students. The billboard is located on Route 30 eastbound between the Mountville and Centerville exits. The students’ billboard design includes the statement “I want the best for my future” and depicts making good decisions, asking for help and having a “starter pack” or plan to achieve success, including choosing to remain sober. The billboard will be displayed until Sunday, June 23. Students in the Leaders of Future Generations Program provide peer-to-peer education. Whitehaus explained that membership is skill-based rather than attendance-based, so it is not necessarily a hardship if folks are unable to attend every Monday evening rehearsal. Each song the group performs has a rehearsal track so that choir members can perfect their parts at home. To ensure a near-perfect sound, each member is required to record herself singing her parts and send the recordings to her section leader for approval. The group’s hard work has paid off over the years. Most recently, VHMX placed third overall and first in the midsize division in Region 19 competition and is waiting to receive an invitation to compete at the international contest that will be held in Louisville, Ky., next year. Additionally, quartets composed of VHMX members finished eighth and 13th out of approximately 50. During the recent rehearsal, Whitehaus reported that the chorus will be ordering pins to commemorate that VHMX scored more than 600 points in adjudication. She noted that 800 is a perfect score and, like the SAT, is difficult to achieve. Leading a chorus to score more than 600 designates Whitehaus as a master director in Sweet Adelines International (SAI), which is the largest women’s singing organization in the world. VHMX has been affiliated with SAI since 1961. A few VHMX members are part of the SAI leadership team.

The group sings a number of barbershop-style songs, but its repertoire is not restricted to that style. All of its music is performed from memory, and each piece is carefully choreographed. VHMX will participate in the Lititz Fourth of July Parade on Wednesday, July 3, and sing the national anthem at a Barnstormers game on Thursday, Sept. 5. BSA Troop 33. Luke’s Scouting journey began with Cub Pack 133 in East Petersburg, where he earned the Arrow of Light Award before joining Troop 33. As a Scout, he has served in a variety of leadership roles within his troop. He served multiple terms as chaplain aide and patrol leader as well as assistant senior patrol leader and senior patrol leader. As a member of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council contingent to the 2017 National Jamboree, he shared duties as troop quartermaster. As a Brotherhood member of Scouting’s honor society, the Order of the Arrow, he has served as chapter vice chief. For his Eagle
project, Luke designed storage shelving for the Black Knight Wrestling Club’s training facility and led a group of volunteers to construct and install the shelves. Outside of Scouting, Luke is a varsity letter winner in both football and wrestling. He served as a wrestling team captain for the 2018-19 season. He also participates in several clubs at school. As a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, he recently represented the region at the state leadership conference in Hershey. He also serves as executive producer for the video production club. He plans to pursue a degree in digital media production and business.

Off the Streets (OTS) Lancaster has been selected as the charitable recipient of 100 percent of the proceeds generated from the 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk to be held by HARTZ Physical Therapy on Saturday, Oct. 5, in Lititz. Off the Streets Lancaster is a volunteer-run charitable organization focused on eradicating homelessness in Lancaster County. It workw in partnership with various other community aid organizations to identify homeless individuals and families that have a sustainable
source of income to pay rent but need help overcoming the last obstacles to obtaining permanent housing, a security deposit and furniture. Since originating in Lancaster County in May 2013,

The Lancaster Hempfield Rotary Club has named its Students of the Month for February, March, April, and May. The students are all seniors at Hempfield High School. Catherine Frick, a February Student of the Month, has been active in lacrosse and field hockey and is part of the youth group at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. After high school, she plans to pursue postsecondary education by studying in nursing with the goal of going into the medical field. Nathan Knauss, a February Student of the Month, has been active in the musical, Dance Theatre program, Steering Committee, yearbook, and Student Council. He is also involved in the youth group of Manor Church, and he dances at a local conservatory. After high
school, he plans to attend college and focus on science or medical study. Aliya Rajnic, a March Student of the Month, has been involved in the chorus, orchestra, chamber choir, musical, Dance Theatre program, and tutoring program. She is also a Youth 4:12 leader and a member of National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society. She plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in youth ministry and dance, with the long-term goal of being a college professor. Evan Long, a March Student of the Month, has been active in the Hempfield Marching Knights, symphonic band, and Ultimate Frisbee Club. He also plays rec league basketball and is involved with the Lancaster County Junior Golf Tour and the Hempfield
Indoor Color Guard Prop Crew. He plans to attend a four-year university, majoring in both mathematics and atmospheric sciences while continuing to be involved with marching band, with aspirations to become a meteorologist/climate scientist. Mataya Chap, an April Student of the Month, has been involved in softball, orchestra, Aevidum, and Mini-THON. After high school, she plans to attend college. Andrew Deck, an April Student of the Month, has been active in cross-country and winter and spring track. A member of National Honor Society, he has also been involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Boy Scouts. After high school, he plans to attend college with the goal of pursuing a master’s
degree in political science or a law degree. Megan Smith, a May Student of the Month, has been involved in the steering committee, as well as cookie drops at her church to welcome new attendees. Her post-graduation plans include attending college to major in education or math. Jack Mieszkalski, a May Student of the Month, has been involved in cross-country, track and field, Varsity Club, and the ACE Mentorship Program of America, and he is also a member of National Honor Society. He plans to attend college and study architecture. Schreiber Golf Classic Slated Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development will join forces with Faulkner Chevrolet for Schreiber’s ninth annual Golf Classic. This year’s event will take place on Monday, Oct. 7, at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. The Schreiber Center is a therapeutic rehabilitation center that provides critical services to families with special needs. Records from the Lancaster Conservation District indicate that this third-place finish is the highest Lancaster County result dating back to the early 1980s. The five members of Hempfield’s student team were each awarded a $500 scholarship.

School Hosts Speaker For Summit Sacred Heart School in Lancaster recently hosted Will Kiefer, founder and executive director of Bench Mark Program, as part of its Youth Entrepreneur Summit. Bench Mark is a nonprofit with a social impact mission to support at-risk teenagers in Lancaster County. Kiefer shared that he had wanted to make a positive impact on his community and used all his savings to start Bench Mark. The nonprofit began to grow, and now, more than five years later, Kiefer works full-time for Bench Mark. Students had the opportunity to make a list of their talents, their interests and what they enjoy doing. The list will be used for future exercises as part of the entrepreneur curriculum.

Students Excel At Competition Students from the Desktop Publishing 2 and Independent Study courses at Hempfield High School competed at the Regional Level of the Pennsylvania High School Media and Design Competition held at the LancasterLebanon IU 13 on April 29. Students submitted 11 projects in the categories of animation, 3-D design, programming, logo and
graphic design, digital movie, and website design. Placements are as follows: animation, first place; programming, second place; 3-D design, third place; and logo and graphic design, third place. Following their animation win, seniors Perry Marinos, Lucas Martin, and Darien Ressler will advance to the State Competition at Dickinson College in May.
Lanco Senior Softball was established in 1989. This year, the league consists of 13 teams with more than 250 players age 60 years of age and up. The evening will commence with a check presentation to the Challenger LL, followed by the singing of the national anthem by 4-year-old Wrightsville native Landon Mak and the All-Star activities. After the completion of the game’s second inning, there will be a twoinning exhibition game of the Challenger LL. The remainder of the Lanco Senior Softball game will continue after the exhibition.

The public is invited to attend this annual event, which is held to benefit the county’s Challenger Little League (LL) and to showcase the talent of the All-Stars who have been selected from the 13 teams in Lanco Senior Softball. There will be drawings for door prizes, which will be distributed between innings. Food and beverages will be available. Lancaster Barnstormers announcer John Witwer will announce the evening’s events, which will be attended by Cylo, the Barnstormers’ mascot. On May 12, Silver and Gold level gymnasts competed. Matilyn Obeck, Presley Stormfeltz, Olivia Urban, Lauren Obeck, Tia Logan, and Jessica Wolf qualified for Worlds in July. Urban took home gold in the uneven bars for level Silver age 13 and placed fourth in the state for the all-around. Wolf was state champion for the level Silver in the 14 age group with performances on vault and floor that earned her first place. She also took silver on beam. Also competing on May 12 were Olivia Hess and Zakiesha White.
