Albright Has Fishing Lures Down to a Science BY GEORGE DEIBEL
E
than Albright has always been inquisitive. J u s t a s k h i s g ra n d m o t h e r Cathleen Jones and his mom, Jennifer Albright. Growing up near the Susquehanna River, Ethan often posed science-related queries. “As far back as I can remember, I would ask my grandma, ‘What type of fish is that? What kind of plant is that?’ I was always just a really curious kid,” he said. Jennifer playfully reminds Ethan about those days. “My mom has told me stories about how annoying I was,” he said. Now? “They think I’m ‘extra’ with all the stuff that I do,” Ethan said with a laugh, using a slang term that means “over the top.” “I don’t think they particularly understand all of it.” The Hempfield High School rising senior is still asking questions, and now,
he’s starting to supply his own answers. With his project, “Reel Problems. Reel Solutions. Combating Microplastics in Aquatic Ecosystems With Biodegradable Fishing Lures,” Ethan finished in third place out of more than 1,200 entries from students in seven countries in the Materials Science category at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which was held May 11 to 16 in Columbus, Ohio. “It was nothing that I’ve ever felt before,” Ethan said. “I wasn’t particularly expecting to get a placement. So when I did, I jumped up and threw my hands on my head and ran up on the stage. It was just really fun to be a part of, and it was really rewarding to see my research commended.” He is eyeing a return trip to ISEF next spring. He exchanged pins with students from Saudi Arabia, Ireland, and Thailand and made many new friends and reconnected with old ones. “It was probably the most fun week of my life,” Ethan said. Foundation Provides Families With a Chance To Feel Normal BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Lynn Walker was worried. In 2013, after her son Caleb had undergone his third brain surgery, a friend sent the family away for an extended weekend trip to Ocean City, N.J. Caleb had been gone for more than two hours on a beach bike expedition, and Lynn was getting anxious. “Caleb comes bursting through the door and says, ‘I know what I’m going to do! I’m going to start a foundation!’”
Lynn recalled. Caleb explained that while biking by the ocean he had felt normal for the first time in four years. “He said, ‘When you get away from everything else, you get to feel normal. This is what I want to give people,’” said Lynn. Outdoors Experiences Will “Peak” Teens’ Interest BY GEORGE DEIBEL
It’s said that faith will move mountains. Mountain Conquerors participants are neither required to move a mountain nor expected to scale one on their own. Instead they will have an opportunity to embark on a potentially life-altering adventure. Mountain Conquerors is an organization founded in 2010
by pastor Matt Kroll. “It is an outdoor camp that teaches leadership skills, life skills, and grows character,” he said. “It provides the experience of a lifetime. That’s our motto, and that’s what we do.” Until this year, the expedition, which is free thanks to sponsors, was only available for boys ages 13 to 16. There are touchdowns and first downs. There are offenses and defenses. There are teammates and opponents. It’s the same flag football game. The Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League just plays it a bit differently. “Our (participants) are more in it for the fun than the competition,” said Madison Heider, a program director at Aaron’s Acres and the league’s unofficial commissioner. “They just like to hang out. We have some people already looking forward to it. No one wants to miss a game. We might be lax with the rules, but we have referees. Having fun is the only special rule.” Aaron’s Acres’ Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League is for individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 with intellectual and developmental disabilities is currently reforming and gearing up for another successful season. This year, games will be played in the gymnasium at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. T he 10-game season will open Saturday, Aug. 2, and conclude on Saturday, Nov. 8, with a celebratory awards banquet. Players, cheerleaders and volunteers interested in participating in the free program can register at www.aarons acres.org/programs/ chuckie-magee-flag-foot ball-cheerleading-league before Monday, June 30. “ We’re basically playing the whole time,” said Heider. “It can be challenging for this group to get into traditional exercise activities. This is an event where you can learn physical activity. (Clients) may not be looking for it, but it’s something they get from it. There’s certainly motivation for them to do their best.” L a s t ye a r, a b o u t 3 0 individuals participated in the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League. This season’s goal is to add at least 10 more participants so four teams can be fielded and two games can be played simultaneously.

“My personal favorite part of the program is that anyone can play,” said Heider, a resident of Ephrata. “In other situations, our individuals might not be able to compete. It’s great to see everyone on the field.” “The league is intended for adults with disabilities,” she added. “But anybody between the age of 18 and 40 can register. The majority of our participants are from Lancaster County, but we will serve whoever comes.” The league is in its 10th year of operation and its fourth year as an Aaron’s Acres program. Founded by coach Randy Samuels,
the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League was named in honor of a former Aaron’s Acres camper who passed away in 2015. “It was a friend’s group who started it,” said Heider. “From what I’ve seen, they were playing pickup in a field. It’s now an Aaron’s Acres program, and it’s become more of a formalized group. We have a little more resources, and it’s grown in numbers. Some of the original members are still playing.” The success of the league has served as a blueprint and laid the groundwork for subsequent Aaron’s See Flag Football pg 5

We don’t want to reinvent the wheel of the structure.” Staff members, who are all volunteers, will lead campers on practice h i k e s b e fo re t a k i n g a backpacking trip along the Black Forest Trail. “ T he whole premise of Mountain Conquerors is to build young (people) of character,” said Kroll, who is pastor of The Lord’s House of Prayer in Lancaster city. “ We use the outdoors to facilitate the classroom. Subjects we are really (focusing) on are character, potential, goal setting, teamwork, leadership skills, and overcoming fears.” Justin Reed participated in Mountain Conquerors in 2020 and is now one of the trek’s leaders. “I learned skills and that you can overcome things with God helping you,” he said. “I had never experienced anything like that before.” Reed said he teaches younger hikers to embrace the things they can’t control and take on the challenges.” Mountain Conquerors is designed to test one’s mindset. “You don’t know what character you have until you put it under pressure,” Kroll said. “Are

We’re good with that b e c a u s e n o w w e h av e something to deal with.” The pastor cited Galatians 5, which includes the allegory of the Fruit of the Holy Spirit and characteristics such as patience and kindness. “We’re looking at all those things, the staff included,” Kroll said. “We all need to grow, and we want to challenge each other and encourage each other and hold each other accountable. By changing your thinking and the words you speak, you can change the outcome. The kids begin to overcome the obstacles they didn’t t h i n k t h e y co u l d e ve r overcome. These are life skills you can teach in a classroom but can’t experience unless you really do it.” Mountain Conquerors camp provides challenges
that test the mind and body. Traditionally, on the first day of the boys’ camp, par ticipants are instructed to plant a flag after 90 minutes of hiking. The following day, campers get a workout on the ropes course before going on the same hike as the day before. They are challenged to beat their time from day one. “There’s never been a year where they haven’t beaten their mark,” said Kroll. At the end of the week, campers must trek one by one up a steep incline that Kroll re fers to as Challenge Hill. Until that point, everything is done as a team. “It’s great to have a support network, but there are many times in life when it’s just you, your hurdle, and God,” Kroll said. “I’ve seen some amazing things in this camp. From the beginning to the end, the trans for mation o f the kids is pretty cool.”

The Building Industry Association of L ancaster County (BIA) has announced the annual virtual and in-person Parade of Homes. The event opened on June 14 and will continue on Wednesday, June 18, through Sunday, June 22. Tour hours are weekdays from 5 to 8 p.m. and weekends from noon to 5 p.m. Sponsored by Fulton Bank and UGI Utilities and presented by BIA, the Lancaster/Lebanon Parade of Homes is a free public event that opens new homes for in-person and virtual tours. This year’s parade features 21 single-family homes, duplexes, and remodeling projects from 12 different builders, ranging in price from $441,990 to more than $1 million. Participants may visit 18 of the 21 homes in person or all of the homes virtually utilizing video technology which provides a tour of each home’s innovative designs and details. Detailed information on all of the home entries is available at www.lancaster paradeofhomes.com. The ParadeSmart app is an additional feature that provides home details, directions, and customizable routes. After downloading the free app from the app store, users should select the BIA Parade of Homes. Parade of Homes guidebooks with the same information are available at the BIA office, 204 Butler Ave., Lancaster, and copies of the book were mailed to more than 100,000 households in Lancaster and Lebanon County. The homes were judged by a panel of building and industry experts, with awards presented at the annual Parade of Homes Gala on June 13. Homes were classified into divisions by price and judged with other homes in the same price division using a numerical scoring system, with awards for Best of Show, Kitchen, Bath, Interior Design, Exterior, and Decorated. The top scoring single-family and duplex homes each received the Fulton Bank Award. Winners have been published on the aforementioned website.

Lingenfelter will also discuss “Herbicide Basics,” including the importance of application timing, using the correct adjuvant, nozzle selection, and additional practices of a successful herbicide program. Leon Ressler from Penn State Extension will present “Managing Pesticide Resistance.” This talk will discuss the importance of rotating active ingredients and illustrate how resistance develops. Ethan earned the Senior Division Champion award at the North Museum Science & Engineering Fair (NMSEF) in March to earn the opportunity to compete at the ISEF. E than noted that he was motivated by teacher Troy Deveney’s AP Environmental Science class a t He m p f i e l d , a n d h e was also inspired by Amy T hompson’s chemistr y course. Hempfield physics teacher Neal Kuhn was Ethan’s adviser for the science fair, and the two spent hours completing paperwork. “(Mr. Kuhn) was a really big help t h ro u g h o u t t h e w h o l e process,” said Ethan, who plans to attend college and study both business and science. As is typically the case at science fairs, Ethan identified a problem and then sought a solution. An ardent angler, he said he discovered that many lures are made of plastic, which contains harmful plasticizers that can cause cancer. The lures can break off a fisherman’s line, and E t h a n f re q u e n t l y s aw those lures on the bottom of the Susquehanna River while he swam with cousins. “The big issue that I was trying to tackle was the release of microplastics and synthetic plasticizers from the synthetic lures,” he said. He quickly realized that anglers use those lures because they are effective, so he attempted to mimic the properties of the synthetic lures, but by using biodegradable materials. Ethan conducted several functionality tests, and his findings showed that his lure compared favorably to plastic lures on the market in a light transmission comparison test , sinking test , and strength test.
Ethan stated he is not the first person to make a biodegradable lure, but his lures, which utilize a biopolymer hydrogel, provide an eco-friendly and inexpensive option. It costs 15 cents for Ethan to construct one of his lures by hand. He said a pack of 10 synthetic lures ranges from $7 to $10. A 10-pack of Ethan’s lures would cost $1.50 to m a ke . Fac to r i n g i n biodegradable packaging at an expense of 20 cents per unit, Ethan estimates it would cost $1.70 to get a pack of 10 of his lures into the hands of consumers. E than would love to turn his science fair project into a business and is looking into the possibility. It’s a costly proposition, and Ethan does not have much free time. He is a member of the Black Knights’ varsity soccer team, as well as the Anchor Club and National Ho n o r S o c i e t y. He co-founded the school’s Coding Club with Autumn Winane and will be Student Council president next school year. His tentative plan is to start small by selling the lures in tackle and bait shops in Columbia. “If they are doing well, I would 100% start manufacturing them and try to get them into bigger stores,” he said. For now, Ethan is content with making sure his family members have access. He gave some lures to his cousin Cash Jones a s a n E a s t e r p re s e n t . Ethan; his dad, Justin; and uncles Eric and John use the lures on their frequent fishing trips. “They love the lures ,” E than said. “They think it’s the coolest thing ever. I am f lattered by how much they praise me for it.”

There are no age limitations for people going on the trip, which is for a patient diagnosed by a medical doctor and undergoing treatment, as well as family members and friends who have been caring for the patient since the diagnosis. The site of the respites m u s t b e d r i va b l e a n d within a 500-mile radius of A Week Away’s coverage area, which is made up of Adams, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Delaware, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Montgomery, Perry, and York counties, along with Philadelphia. A Week Away has granted 305 respites. Beaches are a popular destination, and the foundation also provides trips to the Pennsylvania mountains and will send families to urban areas if the patient has a particular interest in a cultural activity. “ T h e l i fe o f a ny o n e involved with fighting cancer or any chronic life-threatening illness is turmoil,” Lynn said. “It’s like living in a cement mixer, and they never, ever get a break. If we can take them out of that world, that reality, for a week and give them a stress-free experience at no cost for them, we can buy time. And if we have time, we can give God and science a chance to work.” Before he was diagnosed
with brain cancer after having a seizure, Caleb was a seemingly healthy senior at L ampeter- Strasburg High School two months before graduation with plans to study pre-med and wrestle in college. He was briefly paralyzed following the first of his six brain surgeries but bounced back and was able to run and ride a bicycle. Lynn recalls a visit to the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania when Caleb was 18. “He put his head on my shoulder and started crying,” she said. “ That wasn’t like him at all.” C aleb h ad no t ice d a young mother holding a tiny infant and said, “We’re so blessed. We have our family and our faith. Who helps them?” Lynn said, “That was the day the seed (for the foundation) was planted. On the boardwalk, it sprouted.” W hen he realized he would not have time to graduate from Millersville, Caleb took on a variety of jobs in the city to raise money for A Week Away. The Light the Tree campaign is one of the foundation’s big fundraisers. In 2014, Caleb arranged for an ill child to hit the button that turned on the lights on the Christmas tree in Penn Square. In October, he suffered 40 seizures in one day, and doctors told him he likely had less than a month to live. “You have to get me to my fundraiser,” Caleb responded. He survived long enough to see the found ation grant its first respite and deliver a speech during the tree-lighting ceremony. Caleb died days later on Dec. 3, 2014, after becom-
ing unconscious while writing thank you letters. It was one week before his 24th birthday. Lynn keeps a collage on her desk featuring photos of some of the businesses and community members who have helped the foundation raise more than $2.5 million. “It’s a reminder that so many people have been with us for 11 years,” she said. Lancaster County Motors Subaru sponsors the annual August golf tournament, which is already sold out. Members 1st Federal Credit Union, Speedwell Construction, and Hess Auctioneers are also major contributors. “My favorite donation is someone who gives $2 a month,” Lynn said. “That always puts a smile on my face.” There are many avenues to help A Week Away, including the donation of a property that can host respites. “God has blessed this organization. He has taken care of it,” Lynn said. “(The organization) always needs money, but the best way to help us is to give us referrals. NAWCC To Hold Annual Convention The annual convention of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC) will be held at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York, from Thursday, June 19, to Saturday, June 21. The event will feature almost 500 vendors selling horological items, including antique, vintage, and new watches and clocks; books; tools; and parts. The show will also include events such as lectures, mini workshops, a crafts competition, and the chance to explore the National Watch & Clock Museum in Columbia. The lectures and workshops are free to the public. T he show will kick off with a free tailgate event open to the public on June 19 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the York Expo Center arena parking lot. Vendors will offer a variety of vintage and antique clocks, watches,
and horological tools for sale. On Friday, June 20, a buy/sell/trade mart room will be open to NAWCC members in the York Expo Center arena. Those who are not part of the NAWCC m ay b e co m e m e m b e r s on-site that day. Members may also participate in the live auction in the arena on the evening of June 20. At the National Watch & Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, on June 20, the Bulova company will
present a free screening of its documentary “America Telling Time: 150 Years of Bulova.” Bulova historian Carl Rosen and archivist Julie Loftus will be on hand to give tours of the new Bulova exhibit.
