Theater In The Green Outdoor Performances Set For “The Comedy Of Errors” By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The People’s Shakespeare Project will present “The Comedy of Errors” by William Shakespeare in the Tanger Arboretum on the campus of LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays through Sundays, June 13 to 16 and 20 to 23. “The Comedy of Errors” is thought to be The Bard’s earliest play reminiscent of Roman comedies with plenty of farce, physical humor, and mistaken identities. Director Jeff Wolfthal took inspiration from early 1900s Coney Island for the look of the production. “The Vaudeville style influences not only the fashion of the costumes and set decoration, but also the performance style,”
Wolfthal explained. “We utilize a live Foley artist providing sound effects and lean into the classic Vaudevillian fastpaced slapstick humor.” That style choice has proved to be the most challenging aspect of creating the show, as it is physically demanding. “Slapstick requires a good deal of athleticism and an intense attention to detail, as well as the acting ability to make something that has been rehearsed a million times and timed out meticulously look spontaneous and like it actually hurt,” Wolfthal explained. “Every bit of violence has been planned out not only for the actors’ safety, but so that it times up with our Foley artist and it feels satisfying for the audience. This also makes it the most rewarding aspect: Comedy’s reward doesn’t come until the audience arrives. The laughter makes all the hours of work worth it.” See “The Comedy Of Errors” pg 4

11 Dogs Are Ready For Service Five-O Bingo To Offset Humvee Rehab Costs By Dayna M. Reidenouer
’Tis the season for commencements, but at one recent graduation ceremony, the honorees wore collars instead of caps, and most sported lettered vests instead of gowns. A total of 11 canines graduated from the UDS Service Dogs training program on June 3. This was the largest group ever to complete the program, which prepares dogs to aid folks with physical disabilities or autism or to work as therapy dogs in schools and other institutions. UDS Foundation (UDSF) president and CEO Bill Kepner noted that the program had only five graduates last year. See UDS Service Dogs pg 8

Last fall, the West Hempfield Township Police Department (WHTPD) reported that it acquired a military surplus Humvee transport vehicle from the Defense Logistics Agency’s Law Enforcement Surplus Property Program free of charge. The vehicle is essentially a pickup truck that can be used during storms and other inclement weather and to transport first responders to remote locations inaccessible by roads, and it will serve as a public relations tool. “During any sizable natural disaster or an off-the-grid emergency, this vehicle will be extremely beneficial in See Five-O Bingo pg 5

Reed Chosen As Liederkranz Princess Following a 30-year tradition, the Lancaster Liederkranz has named its princess for the 201920 club year. Shelby Reed was crowned as the club’s the newest ambassador on May 11 at the Lancaster Liederkranz Maitanz. She will represent the Lancaster Liederkranz locally and around the Mid-Atlantic area. She will also compete for the title of Miss German-America for the Philadelphia region on Saturday, June 22, at the Vereinigung Erzgebirge in Warminster. Tickets may be purchased at the gate on the day of the event.
The members of the court for Miss German-America represents the greater Philadelphia area by attending various banquets, anniversary events and German cultural activities. Their year begins with a variety of Oktoberfest celebrations and culminates in riding as dignitaries in both the Philadelphia Steuben Day Parade and the New York City Steuben Day parade. Over the past 10 years, several Miss Lancaster Liederkranz nominees have gone on to be selected as Miss German-America of Philadelphia (Kornflower Queen)
as well as members of the court. This year’s current queen, Paxton Beck, and last year’s first princess, Kristina Simon, were both endorsed by the Lancaster Liederkranz. The Lancaster Liederkranz is a growing German heritage club that supports education and cultural events, some of which are open to the public. The club’s members represent a wide range of ages.

The sixth annual FoodStock Music Festival, a fundraiser to fight hunger, will be held at Buchanan Park, 901 Buchanan Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, June 22, from noon to 7 p.m. During the event, attendees may enter to win prizes, shop at a craft show, listen to a variety of music, and pur-

In the past five years, FoodStock has raised approximately $30,000. Fliszar noted that the event was created by Tom Hayden, who worked for the United States Postal Service and saw firsthand the success of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Hayden wanted to do more, so he created FoodStock Music Festival, which provides funds for local food banks and pantries. “Food insecurity affects people and families from all age groups, and summer months are especially tough,” Fliszar said. He reported that according to www.feedingamerica.org, 1 in 8 people, including 1 in 6 children, struggle with hunger in Pennsylvania. “In Lancaster County, approximately 59,000 residents, including 1 in 5 children, go hungry on a regular basis,” Fliszar remarked. “Additionally, those depending on food pantries are coming from all walks of life,” he continued. “Looking at the bigger picture, food insecurity not only affects these individuals, it can have a negative impact on the entire community.” Following the festival, the FoodStock board of directors will determine where to disburse the proceeds so they do the most good. Past recipients have included the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, PowerPacks, the Manheim Central Food Pantry, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, and Warwick Community Chest. FoodStock organizers are excited about the bands that will perform at the event. “We’ve got a great music lineup this year,” Hayden enthused. “Some of the area’s most talented musicians are coming together to help us fight hunger in our community. Straight out of Philly, Mo Lowda & The Humble recently returned from their European tour, and we’re excited to have them join us.” Mo Lowda & The Humble is the event’s headliner band. The group, which is best known for its progressive songwriting and energetic live performances, is new to FoodStock, Fliszar said. The other bands on the event lineup have played at FoodStock at one time or another. Steel Radiance has been part of the event since the beginning,
performing classic rock and blues. Hydroponic Philharmonic, a Grateful Dead tribute band, is back for its second year. Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra is also bringing its big band sound back for another year. Back In Motion, a horn-based band specializing in rock and soul music, is returning to FoodStock after a brief hiatus. The Ogham Stones will bring Celtic rock with a kick to the music festival. Show organizers will award 100 trophies, including one for best of show and the Barry Doutrich Memorial Trophy. Doutrich owned an auto repair shop and founded the car show in 2005 under the name Cruisin’ Columbia. Other trophy categories include best engine, best import, best interior, best exterior, best truck, best vintage, best cycle and most unique. It’s called Thunder on the River, and if you are in downtown Columbia on Saturday, June 15, you will know why. You might want to wear earplugs as more than 500 cars, trucks, and motorcycles will roll into town for the annual car show and rev their engines in unison for a few minutes after the national anthem at noon. “We started this tradition a few years ago, and it’s become a highlight of the show,” said Paul Resch, vice president of the Columbia Lions Club, which organizes the show along with the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC). “A lot of people think that’s how the car show got its name since the sound of 500 engines at full throttle sounds a lot like a thunder storm. The truth is, we came up with the name first, and then a few years ago someone had this idea. It was perfect.” The annual Thunder on the River car and motorcycle show will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 15, rain or shine. Vehicles will be lined up along Locust Street between Second and Sixth streets and in the Locust Street Park. Admission is free for spectators. Parking is available in Janson Park, 650 Cherry St., Columbia, and in the public parking lot in the 100 block of Locust Street. Tyler Rossi will fill the role of Dromio of Syracuse, and Michael Garland will be Dromio of Ephesus. “When casting, I was looking for people with similar builds and looks, not necessarily twins. Unfortunately, we did not have any sets of identical twins audition for our production,” Wolfthal related. “A lot of the effect of our twins is being accomplished by costuming. The twins are similarly costumed, but not completely identically. The differences in the costumes will do a lot for making sure the audience is able to follow along with who is on stage.” The other members of the cast include Dan Griffin as the Duke; Curtis Proctor as Antipholus’ father, Aegon; Jules Schrader as Luciana; Phil Lisi as Balthazar and Dr. Pinch; Katrin Stayner as Aemelia; and Nick Rainville as the first merchant and officer.

The members of the Columbia Catholic War Veterans Post 1306 invite the community to join the annual Columbia Hero Walk on Saturday, June 15. Walkers, runners, and bicyclists of all ages and ability levels are welcome to participate. Strollers and pets are also welcome at the event, which will take place rain or shine. Columbia Hero Walk chairperson Donald Androsky shared that the funds raised through the Columbia Hero Walk will benefit the PA Hero Walk, which supports veterans exclusively in Pennsylvania who may be having a difficult time medically or economically. The initiative provides assistance with housing, food, clothing, vehicle and home repair, appliance purchases and repairs, and utility payments. Androsky emphasized that the PA Hero Walk is run by volunteers, so the money does not go toward any staff expenses only to helping veterans. Organizers have set a goal of raising $20,000 for the PA Hero Walk this year. Androsky said that after raising $2,000 at the first Columbia Hero Walk, organizers upped their goal to raising $5,000 at the second walk and just missed it by raising $4,600. Similarly in year three, the event raised $9,600 - just barely missing the $10,000 goal. However, Androsky said that the winds shifted last year as organizers set a goal to raise $15,000, and the event raised more than $16,000. Businesses and individuals who would like to support the Hero Walk but are unable to participate may mail donations or drop off contributions earmarked for the
Hero Walk at Post 1306, 250 N. Seventh St., Columbia. Columbia Hero Walk registration for individuals and teams will open at 7 a.m. at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. To register in advance, individuals may call 717-449-5635. Participants will receive an event T-shirt. Cyclists will depart at 7:50 a.m., and walkers and runners will step off at 8 a.m. Participants may complete 14 miles along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, finishing at Fisherman’s Wharf, the Falmouth access point off Route 441. Several exit points are available for individuals who would prefer to complete a shorter portion of the trail. Comfort stations with beverages and snacks will be offered at five points along the route. Transportation back to Post 1306 will be provided for participants with the exception of bicyclists. The top three individual and team finishers in both walking and biking categories will receive awards at a ceremony at Post 1306 after the race. Free refreshments and a chicken barbecue meal will be available for participants. “We had 74 participants last year,” Androsky said. “This year we hope to go over 100.” The annual walk is one of several ways that Post 1306 reaches out to veterans. The post also hosts an annual catch-andrelease fishing event for veterans at Lake Aldred and sponsors quarterly outings for the veterans from the Lebanon VA. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County encourages local residents to become CASA volunteer advocates and help children in foster care find safe, nurturing, and permanent homes. According to CASA, the organization currently assists approximately 45% of children and teenagers in need, but about 400 Lancaster County youths in foster care do not yet have a CASA volunteer advocate. CASA’s goal is to serve every child in need by 2020. The organization notes that children who have a CASA volunteer advocate
may be more likely to receive needed services, such as health care, therapy, and education, as well as have a better chance of being adopted. Individuals interested in learning more about becoming a CASA volunteer advocate are invited to attend a session on Monday, June 17, at noon at LGH Suburban Outpatient Pavilion, 2100 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Approximately $10,000 is needed to complete the work, which also includes attaching the rear curtain panel and the roof. Ney is the wife of the West Hempfield fire chief, and she has gotten to know many of the WHTPD officers and township employees. She has created a Five-O Bingo to raise additional money for the project. “I’m a helper and a giver; I hate seeing people in need when I know there’s something I can do,” Ney explained. “I decided to do the bingo just as a member of the township (and as a) friend who wanted to help.” The Five-O Bingo to benefit the West Hempfield Township Police Department will be held on Sunday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The doors will open at noon. The event will feature 20 games, with 10 designer bags, five meat bundles, and five tools awarded as prizes. Hempfield’s great baseball season came to a close on June 3 at Widener University. The Black Knights were blanked by Neshaminy in the first round of the PIAA Class 6A state playoffs by a 3-0 score. The Neshaminy nine managed 10 hits, all singles. Senior starter Ty Vaughn managed to escape the big inning repeatedly as he scattered nine singles. He struck out five and walked three. Neshaminy scored an unearned run off reliever Justin Lichtenwalner in the sixth. The Knights also had plenty of pressure on Neshaminy’s starting pitcher Dan Errigo. The junior
allowed two singles, hit a batter and allowed five walks in 3.2 innings. Reliever Jake Fehrle was on the ropes too, but escaped trouble, allowing two walks and two singles in 3.1 innings and earning the save for Errigo. In all, Neshaminy pitching allowed 13 base runners but went unscathed through seven innings of perilous pitching, including a bases-loaded opportunity for Hempfield. The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced the winners of its 2019 Safety Training and Evaluation (STEP) Awards and recognized its 2019 OSHA Partners on May 1. Representatives from several member companies accepted their awards at the ABC Safety Awards Dinner. The anchor of ABC’s Safety Awards program is STEP, which provides companies a structured approach to benchmark and improve their safety efforts. The goal of the program is to provide an organized approach to analyze and further develop a company’s safety and loss prevention. Participating ABC member firms measure their safety processes and policies on 20 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidence rates. Participating companies score their level of achievement for each component on a weighted point scale and document their incident rates. Companies receive a recognition level of Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Participant based on this data. Two reasons can be given for the increase in graduates. First, UDS moved into a larger facility at 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, last year. The new location has kennel space for 12 dogs, a puppy cuddling room, and a large training room. Second, except for owner-trained dogs, all of the initial training is carried out in state correctional institutions. From age 10 weeks to 12 months, the puppies live with one inmate around the clock, learning up to 50 commands. “(It’s a) win/win/win,” puppy sponsor and program instructor Mary Jalongo wrote in a letter read aloud at the ceremony. “The dogs win because they are treated like best friends and family. The inmates/trainers win because they acquire new skills and make an important contribution to the community. The clients win because they get a fourlegged support system, on call 24/7 and eager to assist.” When a puppy reaches a year old, it goes to live with a volunteer puppy raiser, who takes it to weekly training classes and provides socialization opportunities. At 18 months old, the dog then moves on to a secondary trainer, who fine-tunes the dog’s existing knowledge and teaches it specialized skills and commands. At that point, the dog is ready to be paired with a UDS client. Before the transition, however, the client goes through two weeks of training so he or she can care for the dog and utilize all the services the animal can provide. After a year together, the team is re-evaluated to ensure that everything is going well. Of course, the UDS Service Dogs staff members are available at any time to give advice or extra training as needed. One of the first dogs to be honored at the ceremony was a chocolate Labrador named Rader, whose name was chosen by his sponsor, the Porsche Club of America. “Rader” is the German word for “wheels.” “Rader is Dylan’s wheels,” said Jamie Gordon, the mother of UDS client Dylan Gordon, who has autism. “He’s a pal, and he keeps Dylan going. He’s changed our lives.” Labradoodles Wrangler and Duncan and black Lab Gideon are also facility dogs. Wrangler was owner-trained by Danielle Rogers for Manor Middle School, and he supports more than 2,000
students a year, sitting with them in the nurse’s office or providing comfort when they cry. Gideon loves to give kisses to students in the Mechanicsburg School District, and both students and staff members have been positively impacted by his presence. The same can be said of Duncan. The teachers who trained Rory, a black Lab, noted that he is part of a pack of eight service dogs in the Northern York County School District. “Our students and staff have found her to be a source of comfort and inspiration, as she seems to know just how to approach someone who is struggling,” they wrote in the graduation program. “Shelly Thomas, our director of special services, calls this ‘the power of dog.’” UDS Service Dogs program coordinator Kristy Smith expressed her gratitude for Thomas, saying, “Without her, we wouldn’t have our service dog program in schools.” UDSF director of development Larry Aubrey closed the ceremony by encouraging attendees to spread the word about UDS Service Dogs. “This program changes lives,” he commented. “It’s entirely supported by the community.” For more information about UDS Service Dogs or to contribute to the program, readers may visit www.udservices.org or call program manager Lori Breece at 717-715-8753.

Arters Earns Eagle Scout Award Anthony Arters of Lancaster earned the Eagle Scout Award, the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts. He was recognized in a ceremony on Dec. 30, 2018, at Salem United Church of Christ in Lancaster. Anthony started Scouting with Pack 67 as a Tiger Scout when he was in first grade. He earned the Arrow of Light before crossing over to Boy Scouts with Troop 64 in February 2011. “Walking Backward Into the Future,� a conversation with Pueblo Native American elder Larry Littlebird of New Mexico and Dr. Greg Valerio from the British Isles, will take place on Thursday, June 20, at 6 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 119 N. Duke St., Lancaster. Littlebird and Valerio will share stories rooted in the ancient wisdom traditions of the indigenous Celtic people and tribal Native Americans. The stories to be shared illuminate historical layers of settler colonialism, racial injustice and climate disruption. The event is meant to chart a way toward peace, justice and reconciliation. Littlebird is a storyteller, filmmaker, artist, author, social activist and speaker who shares stories from his tribal American oral tradition. With his wife, Deborah, he co-founded an indigenous continuum retreat center and sustainable living farm called Hamaatsa. Valerio is the spiritual director of the Society of St. Columba, a monastic agrarian community on the South Downs of England.

Susquehanna Heritage will offer a geology trail bike ride on Wednesday, June 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. on the Northwest River Trail. Participants will meet at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The ride will be led by a guide from Susquehanna Heritage, including important historical sites as well as some of the trail’s popular features. In addition to cycling along the 190-year-old canal towpath and former railroad, bicyclists will see landmarks such as the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge, Point Rock Tunnel, the Cenozoicera Chickies Rock Formation, the abandoned pig iron furnace complex, Chiques Creek, and the Susquehanna River. Participants will take a break at the Furnace Road Day Use Area at Chickies Rock County Park. At a number of stops, the guide will tell about the history of the sites.
