Waystock Will Offer Fun, Music, And More Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, will host the eighth annual Waystock Community Music and Family Fun Fest from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. A large tent and backyard pavilion will provide shade for the day, and guests are invited to bring chairs as well as nonperishable food items for the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. Waystock co-organizer Deb Kereczman noted that the festival has historically been an enjoyable event for everyone involved. “It’s such a nice setting friendly and relaxed - with everyone interacting and enjoying the fresh air, the music, and all the activities at their own pace,” she said. “We hope anyone reading this will come out and enjoy an afternoon of fun and fellowship with our community neighbors of all ages.” During Waystock, attendees may enjoy a range of free family activities,
including two bounce houses, kite flying, balloons, face painting, and picnic games. Outdoor Farmers Market To Open In Millersville
The grounds of Immerse International in Millersville will be the site of Manor Market, an outdoor farmers market that will be open once a month from June 15 through October. By Dayna M. Reidenouer
It has been five years since the borough of Millersville last saw a farmers market. That will change, however, on Saturday, June 15, when Manor Market will open on the campus of Immerse

Rec Center Plans Community Picnic Hempfield recCenter in Landisville invites the community to a Summer Kickoff Community Picnic in the Park on Wednesday, June 12, from 5 p.m. until dusk at Fairview Park, located in West Hempfield Township. The rain date is Thursday, June 13. A part of the nonprofit organization’s community outreach, the picnic is open to all, and attendees are invited to bring a picnic dinner to the park. Hempfield recCenter will provide games and activities for people of all ages beginning at 6 p.m. There will be a cornhole tournament, with registration occurring
from 5:30 to 6 p.m. and competition from 6 to 8 p.m. There will also be games such as Can Jam, Spike Ball, sack races, and tug-ofwar for children. Hostetter Receives Banking Advocacy Award the State Capitol. Hostetter is an active member of the PA Bankers and previously served on its communications, grassroots, and government relations policy committees over the years. Hostetter, who resides in Landisville, joined Fulton Bank in 1981 and led the bank’s marketing, strategic communications, and investor relations. In 2016, Hostetter stepped away from his fulltime, traditional duties and focused his attention on coordinating the corporation’s
government relations activities on a parttime basis. Hostetter is a longtime volunteer for Hospice & Community Care and has volunteered for Lebanon Valley College.

And our family-oriented event benefits a great cause in the Hempfield Area Food Pantry.” “Our congregation goes all out to bless the community and the Hempfield Area Food Pantry with this kickoff-to-summer event,” Fritz commented. “This year, we hope to set a new Waystock record of food collection with the help of many of our neighboring ‘Businesses on Battery’ also filling food boxes. While the event, food, and beverages are completely free, each guest is asked to bring nonperishable food items to help fill our food van for the pantry.” This is the second year for Businesses on Battery, in which the companies located along Stony Battery Road are invited to hold on-site collections for the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. Attracting Hummingbirds, a program of the Tanger Arboretum Nature Series, will be offered on Saturday, June 29, at 10 a.m. Participants will learn about the lifecycle of the ruby-throated hummingbird and how to make one’s yard a special place for hummingbirds to return to every year. Advance tickets are strongly recommended as programs typically sell out. “Go at Your Own Pace” Saturday Tours at Wheatland will be held on June 29. Tours will begin every 15 minutes from 1 to 3 p.m. Guides will be stationed throughout the presidential mansion as visitors tour at their own pace. 100WWC Slates Relaunch Event Programs Set At Columbia Crossing
The local charitable giving circle 100 Women Who Care Lancaster County (100WWC) will relaunch its organization with a celebratory evening at Tellus360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster, on Monday, June 10, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event will serve as an opportunity to introduce new leadership, welcome members’ input and hear from special guests in the community, including Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace. Lancaster’s 100 Women Who Care chapter was formed in 2015 and has since donated more than $138,000 to nonprofits of Lancaster County. The organization follows the national 100 Women Who Care model for membership and giving, in that women gather three times a year for a one-hour meeting, learn about local charities and donate a $100 check to a charity that the group selects. An end-of-year celebration is held each year, where recipients share the impact made by the group’s donations. The relaunch will serve as an opportunity for new and current
members to share their ideas for the organization’s future growth, as well as meet the new leaders who have joined the planning committee. The committee manages all aspects of the group’s charitable giving efforts. In addition to the evening’s idea and information exchange, guests will hear from three local leaders: Sorace, who will kick off the evening with a welcome, and nonprofit directors Will Kiefer of Bench Mark Program and Tricia Nabors of New Choices. Both Kiefer and Nabors were awarded donations from 100WWC after being invited to present at a quarterly meeting. Each will share how these funds impacted their organizations’ programming and mission. organizers hope to have a vendor selling pet items join in for the day. “We are partnering with Manheim Township Recreation Commission for this event,” noted Mueller, who added that a TouchA-Truck event, which was part of the 2018 fest, will also be held. “We will have a police car, a fire engine, an ambulance, and some big earthmoving equipment children can tour and climb on,” he said. The Thaddeus Stevens STEM truck will be at the event with a robot to demonstrate, and the ODC Auxiliary will hold a plant sale, featuring hanging plants, in the park. “We will have face painting and caricature drawing,” added Mueller. Additionally, a mobile bike shop will be on-site with information on bike safety and local trails to ride.

A recipe, when made correctly, will have just the right quantities of ingredients in the right combination. Likewise, Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for Occupational Development Center (ODC) and organizer of the organization’s second Food Truck Fest, has a recipe for the event. “We want the right mix,” explained Mueller. “We want a good variety. We will have a little bit of everything for everybody.” This year’s Food Truck Fest will feature 16 trucks - twice as many as the 2018 event, according to Mueller - when it is held at Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no admission charge to attend. Food items from trucks will be available for purchase. For this year’s fest, Mueller has lined up trucks selling items such as Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food, cheesesteaks, burgers, a variety of fried chicken items, fresh-cut french fries and other potato treats, and scooped ice cream treats. Mueller shared that the Reunion food truck, a nonprofit entity started by Community Action Program, will sell soul food
at the event. “Last year, they brought pork belly tacos that sold out quickly because they were amazing,” he said. Mueller added that Upohar will be new to the venue this year. “They will be selling global cuisine and vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free food,” he said. Other new trucks at the event will sell vegetarian pasta meals, Asian meatball sliders, Key West tacos with shrimp, old-fashioned barbecue with smoked meats, sweet and savory waffle items and sandwiches, and shrimp, oyster, and crab items and pierogies. On the sweet side will be trucks selling hand-dipped ice cream treats, kettle corn, creative cotton candy treats, Southern-style bakery items, cupcakes, and cannoli. For entertainment, organizers have engaged two live bands to return to perform. “Ink Vault will play cover songs from famous artists such as Dave Matthews,” said Mueller, who added that the band has a bluegrass feel and will play familiar songs from the 1970s through the present day. Local singer and songwriter Mark DeRose will also perform. Because many of the 2,000 attendees at last year’s fest brought along their dogs, ODC has asked the Lancaster SPCA to be onsite with puppies for adoption, and

The 10th consecutive event will take place at Long’s Park on Harrisburg Pike in Lancaster from 1 to 4 p.m. on the lawn near the amphitheater, weather permitting. Signs and red balloons will direct attendees. Area residents are invited to stop by for free juggling lessons and to try out various circus skills. There is no fee to participate, and some juggling props will be available for use. Stephanie Gromek will present “Global to Local: Lancaster, Pa., and 300+ Years of Welcoming Newcomers.� She is the development and communications coordinator for the immigration and refugee program of Church World Service (CWS) in Lancaster. Gromek will explore CWS Lancaster’s 33 years of resettlement services, which have resulted in Lancaster being called the “Refugee Capital of America.� Gromek will address how and why Lancaster has become the home of many refugees and what
the community’s response has been, including responses to today’s refugee crisis. She will relate current attitudes to founder William Penn’s vision of the area as a safe haven for refugees fleeing religious and political persecution. A questionand-answer session will follow. Gromek has worked with refugees and displaced people for some 12 years. Gromek began her career working with HIV/AIDS populations based in Nairobi, Kenya, and then, after completing a master’s degree in community health at Hofstra University, held various posts related to resettlement and health coordination, including a stint at the

Dayspring Christian Academy senior Kara Russo of Lancaster was awarded the Salvation Army’s Olga Ruth Stratton Scholarship and Thomas Wolf Scholarship during a recent ceremony. Russo was one of 15 recipients of the Salvation Army’s Olga Ruth Scholarship. Of those 15 recipients, she was one of two who also earned the Thomas Wolf Scholarship. Applicants must write an essay outlining their aspirations in college, how they have served in their community, and their plans after college. Along with this essay, applicants were required to send in at least two letters of recommendation in reference to their community service and academics. Requirements also included having at least a 2.5 GPA; having been accepted to a college, university, or trade school; and needing higher education financial assistance. Additionally, applicants participated in a face-to-face interview to complete the process. Russo plans to attend Lancaster Bible College in the fall and major in business with a minor in communications.

While Vaughn worked through the next four frames allowing a walk and a single, the Knights’ bats went to work in the bottom of the fourth. Fiore doubled and both Vaughn and Christian LaBarbera walked, bringing Alec Santiago to the plate. He poked a two-run single into right. Seth Constein also singled in a run. Santiago had a chance at driving in more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The game was suspended due to lightning. By that juncture, the Knights had scored two more thanks to doubles by Vaughn and LaBarbera following a Fiore single. The Knights improved to 21-4. The team had lost the L-L League title game to Lampeter-Strasburg, the only league foe to top the Knights during a regular-season stretch in which they won 13 of 14. The Pioneers blanked Hempfield in that regular season meeting as well as the league championship. Therefore, the Knights have been resilient with this theme. Lose a title game, but move on to the next round. In the district title game, Wilson slugged 14 hits and won 11-2. The Bulldogs had also topped the Knights 5-3 late in the regular season. Saylor’s sacrifice fly RBI drove in Wyatt Hershey in the third inning to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Knights were patient and drew four walks in the sixth inning for one more run. Hempfield carries a 21-5 record into the state playoffs. BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL If there’s a word to describe the 2019 Hempfield boys’ volleyball team, “resilient” would be that word. “Our team was very resilient,” head coach Mike Vogel, remarked. “We lost in districts and got into the consolation bracket. We had to win two matches, which we did against Chambersburg and Exeter. We
could’ve given up but we didn’t. “I’m proud of them because of their resilience,” continued the coach. “They kept supporting each other. And what I also like is we have a relatively young squad. They’ll work hard to get back to this point next year and go further.” Going further is what the Knights would have liked to do. On Tuesday, Hempfield opened the PIAA Class-AAA state playoffs with a loss to defending state champ North Allegheny in a match played at Hempfield Area High School in Greensburg. The Tigers and Knights traded wins in the first two sets by nearly identical scores - a 25-15 win by the Tigers and a 25-16 win for the Knights. North Allegheny won the third set 25-18 and the fourth by a much closer margin of 25-23. “We were playing the number one seed out of District Seven,” Vogel pointed out. “They were ranked number one or two in the state by PVCA [Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association]. They’re a tough team. We met them in the state finals last year and they knocked us off. The North Allegheny team was in a league of their own last year. If we had played better this year, we would have had a much better shot.” Colsen Hunt, one of next year’s seniors Vogel will look to for a run at states, racked up 37 assists I in the match. Senior Adam Gallagher had a great match with 16 digs. Adam Brossman served up three aces, drilled nine kills and registered one block. Sophomores Ryan Givens, Grant Lorelli and Owen Hanzelman as well as senior Elliot De La Torre each had one block. “It was really close in the fourth set,” Vogel said. “We couldn’t get going.” Vogel gave praise to Gallagher for how he stepped in to fill the role of defensive specialist for a banged

The Black Knights came up short against the Red Raiders in the opening round of the PIAA Class-AAA boys’ lacrosse playoffs. Radnor, the third seed out of District One, topped Hempfield 14-4 on Tuesday at Penncrest High School. The loss ended the Knights’ season with a 17-6 mark. Hempfield had shown resilience in winning a close consolation match the previous week, edging Wilson 13-12 to earn the third-place seeding out of District Three. Hempfield says farewell to more than a dozen seniors, including Cameron Aksu, Robert Griffith, and Matt Heuston. Key returnees will include goalie Matt Weist, who’ll be a sophomore next year along with Max Grube, Jacob Nottolli, A.J. McAlpine and Ryan Heuston. Grayson Dague will return and provide senior leadership with the likes of Tyler Gearhart, Bryce Witmer and Jackson Shand - to name a few.

Scaccia Announces Retirement Resurrection Catholic School teacher Mary Scaccia has announced her retirement after 21 years of teaching second grade. A product of Catholic school, Scaccia graduated from Sacred Heart of Jesus School and Lancaster Catholic High School. Catholic education and teaching have always been more than a job, and she attends the First Communion Mass for every student. Just out of Shippensburg University, Scaccia began teaching first grade at Mill Road Elementary in Elizabethtown. After five years, she relocated with her husband, Peter, several times but continued teaching religious education for her church or as a substitute in local schools. When she returned to Lancaster in 1995, she worked in the library at St. Anne School, which her children attended. She started at Resurrection in 1998. Scaccia received a master’s degree in education from Temple University and also earned a reading specialist certification from Millersville University. She will miss reading to students. She has made a tradition of reading favorites: “Charlotte’s Web” starts the year; “The Night Before Christmas” comes in December. Each day, she reads the same story by
Clement C. Moore but illustrated by a different person. Students talk about the pictures and how they might draw them. Her devotion to teaching spills over to organizing special events such as the Day of Sharing, the annual giving tree and an Olympic ceremony when the Olympics take place. Pictures of her annual field trips, especially those to Central Market in Lancaster and a gnome-themed location in Kirkwood, get dozens of nostalgic comments and likes when posted on social media. Scaccia received a Golden Apple award in 2007 from the Harrisburg Diocese. She plans to remain in Lancaster, spend more time with her seven grandchildren and travel with her husband.

Golf Tournament from pg 1 The Hempfield Foundation will hold its annual golf tournament on Monday, June 17, at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville. The coed, 18-hole tournament will feature a scramble format. Check-in will be from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and a hot lunch will be served and hole and cart assignments will be given. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Beverages will be served during play. The 19th Hole Celebration Dinner and Awards will take place at 5:30 p.m., and appetizers and beverages will be served. The tournament will be held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, the tournament may be shortened and prizes may be based on a fewer number of holes completed. The tournament is limited to 144 golfers, who may sign up as individuals, in pairs, or in groups of four. The fee includes green fees and the use of a cart, lunch and dinner, refreshments, and contests such as closest to the pin, longest drive, straightest drive and Par 3 hole prize contests. According to Hershey, more than 5,000 people attended last year’s Motorsports Show, and it takes a total of 150 to 200 volunteers to run the event. “It’s just exciting with it being the 20th year to know where it came from. Back when it started, it was just a small get-together with some cars and some grills,” Hershey said. “There has been a ton of impact as well, with people plugging into LCBC and other churches after coming to the show, and it’s been really cool to hear those stories over the years.” LCBC Church is a contemporary, seeker-sensitive church and is currently ranked as the 18th largest church in the United States by Outreach Magazine with a weekly attendance of 17,000.
