Hempfield Seniors Set To Graduate By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The approximately 565 members of the Hempfield High School Class of 2019 will receive their diplomas in a graduation ceremony that will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, at the Franklin & Marshall College Alumni Sports and Fitness Center, 929 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Admission will be by ticket only, and each student will receive six tickets to distribute to family members and friends. Due to the class size this year, no extra tickets will be available, and there will not be a waiting list. The ceremony will be streamed online, and a recording will be shown on Comcast 66 on Friday, June 7, at 6 p.m. Information about the livestream will be posted
at www.hempfieldsd.org/hhs. A baccalaureate service has been set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, at Hempfield United Methodist Church, 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Students Jackson Fogel, Ruby Mundok, Andrew Jordan, and Bronwyn Meldrum have been selected to speak during commencement. The topic will be “Unique, Yet United.” Ruby noted that she has structured her speech to be relevant to everyone in attendance. “We are united as a community, more than just a school,” she said. Likewise, Jackson will also appeal to a broader audience. “(My speech is on) how we experience life, the connections we make along the way, and how it can bring people together regardless of the differences they might face,” he remarked. Long’s Park Concert Series To Highlight Well-Known Music
Servant Stage Company (SSC) will present the Broadway classic “My Fair Lady” at Millersville University’s Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville, on select dates from Friday, May 31, through Saturday, June 15. Lerner and Loewe’s award-winning story of a Cockney flower seller transformed into an elegant lady is widely considered one of the greatest musicals of all time. When Professor Henry Higgins tries to teach Eliza Doolittle how to speak like a proper lady, an unlikely friendship begins to flourish. “My Fair Lady” from pg 1 Franklin & Marshall College theater production manager Bonnie Bosso is once again serving as the director; she previously directed “Sherlock Holmes” for SSC. Kendra Bigley is the musical director. Bigley won a Broadway World award for her musical direction of SSC’s recent production of “Titanic.” The two directors are excited to be working on this latest show. “‘My Fair Lady’ is such an iconic piece in the realm of musical theater, and, of course, many people have seen the movie. I feel humbled - and a bit awed - to work on it,” Bosso remarked. “Our goal is to create a piece that fulfills the expectations of the audience while still bringing a freshness to it whenever we can.” The production is fully staged with a cast of 25 local performers and a 12-piece orchestra. The lead roles of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins are played by SSC veterans Leslie Talley and Chris Wert, respectively. Talley previously appeared as Meg in SSC’s production of “Little Women,” and she has portrayed biblical characters Eve and Mary at Sight & Sound Theatres. Wert acted in SSC’s “Sherlock Holmes” and directed SSC’s “Around the World in 80 Days.” “I am always thrilled to be asked to direct a Servant Stage show, and I love the people who

perform for them,” Bosso said. “The process of mounting a show at Servant Stage feels like walking into a room of old friends. Most especially, I think its mission statement rocks, and I am glad for the chance to support it.” In keeping with SSC’s mission to make great performances accessible to everyone in the community, all performances are offered as pay-what-you-will. Patrons are welcome to donate via cash or check as they leave the show, by mail, by credit card at the performance, or online. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad St., East Petersburg, will host an organ dedication concert on Saturday, June 1, at 7 p.m. The program will showcase the church’s new Allen digital organ and will include a variety of music, including classic organ works, as well as several new pieces composed by the featured organist Wayne L. Wold. Wold is professor, organist, and chair of the music department at Hood College in Frederick, Md. He also serves as director of music at First Lutheran Church of Ellicott City, Md., and is active as a recitalist, clinician, author, and composer. From 1996 to 2013, he served as director of chapel music at Camp David, the presidential retreat. He has performed solo recitals across the U.S. and in Europe, and he leads numerous hymn festivals. He has performed with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, the Frederick Symphony Orchestra, and other ensembles. More than 350 of Wold’s compositions are in print and include works for organ, choirs, instruments, and congregation. Wold serves as councillor for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the

Devin Groff, roadmaster for Lancaster Township, recently graduated from the PSATS Municipal Government Academy (PMGA), a leadership and municipal education program of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS). The 2019 class of PMGA graduates received diplomas and certificates of completion on April 15 during the township association’s annual Educational Conference in Hershey. According to PSATS executive director David Sanko, PSATS structured the academy to give participants practical information they can use in their positions. Resurrection Catholic School students were recently honored in AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary 19’s annual AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Americanism poster and essay contests for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The regional contests were open to students from all schools, though Resurrection students were the only ones who submitted essays. Imani Edu-Tainers African Dance Company will present its 24th annual community concert on Saturday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The performance, which will be appropriate for audience members of all ages, will celebrate the history of traditional African dance and drumming. Imani’s Performing Ensemble has spent the last year collaborating with its international artist network to create a highenergy, entertaining, and educational concert that will be the culminating event of the organization’s 2018-19 season. Imani’s community class members and special guest artists will also be featured at this year’s concert. Imani Edu-Tainers is a not-forprofit organization that was founded in 1992 by Sonya Mann-McFarlane in Chapel Hill, N.C. She relocated to Lancaster in 1993 and continues to promote community awareness, appreciation, and understanding of African culture. Imani provides dance and drumming classes
for children, youths, and adults as well as cultural enrichment programming throughout Lancaster. The performing company supported by the organization has received rave reviews for performances throughout the area and beyond. More than 100 women from across Lancaster County gathered at the Lancaster Country Club on May 3 to raise awareness and funds in support of women’s heart health at the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon. The event raised more than $250,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA). The event celebrated the 15th anniversary of the AHA’s Go Red for Women movement by encouraging women not only to wear red to raise awareness of heart disease in women, but also to take action to reduce their personal risk factors and work toward healthier communities. Megan Orr, registered dietitian with UPMC Pinnacle, presented a lecture on heart-healthy eating tips as part of a heart disease risk-reduction plan. Attendees also listened to Doriana Musselman of Lancaster talk about life as the caregiver of her 2-year-old son, Emmett Musselman, who was born with a congenital heart defect that required his first of three open heart surgeries when he was 32 hours old. Doriana discussed her son’s surgeries and recovery, the stress it put on their family and the importance of keeping the entire family heart-healthy so they can enjoy more time together. Sue Keyser of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital received the Go Red for Women Friend of Heart award for more than 15

Knights Fall in District Three 3A Consis Match The Hempfield girls’ lacrosse team had scored at least 20 goals in five of its matches this season - all against Lancaster-Lebanon League rivals. They had scored 19 goals twice in the regular season. But that 19th goal just wasn’t there in a memorable yet heartbreaking District Three Class-AAA consolation match at Lower Dauphin Middle School on Wednesday. The Black Knights lost a wild 19-18 battle against Wilson, ending Hempfield’s season with a 17-5 record. “It felt like a long game but at the same time, it felt fast - the scores were quick,” said head coach Elizabeth Erb. “We came out and grabbed a pretty big lead. We were up 5-0, I believe. Once they tied it up, they had us playing catch-up. We would equalize and they would score.” The pace at which the goals were scored dictated the game of course. “The settled possessions turned into turnovers for both sides,” Erb explained. “So many of the goals came off quick shots. In the fast breaks, both teams caught the defenses out of position.” Speaking of defense, Erb gave credit to junior goalie Kyah Peifer.

“Kyah played very well,” said the coach. “She wound up with eight saves. Our shot percentage was better so she out-played the Wilson goalie. She played hard and did what she could in this situation.” The Knights scored their 18 goals on 21 shots. Kelsea Dague poured in six goals for Hempfield. Looking ahead to the following season, Erb hopes to welcome back the majority of a team that loses only four seniors. “Lizzie Yurchak and Lindsey Durkota will be helpful in the attack and midfield,” she pointed out. “Kelsea Dague was good scorer for us this year. “Our goalies are both coming back - Cassidy Roark and Kyah Peifer,” continued the coach. On the defensive and midfield roles, Axe, Gillisse and Jess Yeand are expected back. “This was a good team,” Erb said. “They certainly fought all season long. It was one of the better groups in terms of chemistry and comradery. They cared about each other and that led us to the success we had this season.” BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL Hempfield’s heavy hitters kept bringing it throughout the intense District Three Class-AAA quarterfinals playoff match at Cumberland Valley. Elliot De La Torre poured in nine kills, Adam Brossman and Ben Crabtree each registered eight while Ryan Givens chipped in with five. It wasn’t enough. The Central York Panthers slipped past the Black Knights by scores of 2522, 26-24 and 25-22 in the openinground match on Monday. Crabtree, Alex Drager, Owen Hanzelman, and Colsen Hunt, who distributed 30 assists and finished with nine digs, each served one ace. De La Torre registered four blocks. The Knights were coming off a 3-0 defeat (25-22, 25-20, 25-22) of Central Dauphin the previous week in the opening round of districts. Despite the defeat, the Knights’

dream of reaching the state playoffs remained vital. The top five teams from the district qualify for states. The Knights’ next match was on Wednesday against Chambersburg, who lost to top-seeded Cumberland Valley two days earlier. Hempfield reached the fifth-place match with a Wednesday night win at Red Lion. Chambersburg came back for a 25-23 win in the fourth set. However, Hempfield held on for a 159 win in the tiebreaker fifth set, escaping with a 3-2 win. The Knights and the ninth-seeded Trojans exchanged victories in the first two sets, each winning by a 25-22
margin. The Knights made it two in a row, taking the third set 25-20. Brossman put down17 kills while also registering two aces. Drager and Hanzelman each racked up 13 digs. Hunt made sure the hitters had a lot of opportunities to come up with relentless swings against the Trojans. He gave out 47 assists. Givens recorded five blocks. BOYS’ LACROSSE Hempfield and Manheim Township met once again. The two L-L League rivals had met during the regular season twice and the Knights, after having lost both of those meetings, had posted an 18-11

Heuston also dished out two assists. SOFTBALL The Knights played host to Cumberland Valley on Tuesday afternoon in a first-round District Three 6A softball playoff game. The Eagles edged Hempfield 3-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals. Gabi Turner pitched four shutout innings and the Knights gave her a 1-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. The 10th-seeded Eagles, who improved to 9-10 on the year, tied the score on a suicide squeeze in the fifth inning. An error and a bloop single in the top of the sixth gave CV the lead for good. Hempfield’s lone run came in the third inning. Kate Bemesderfer singled and senior center fielder Shannon McDermott was hit by a pitch. They executed a double steal and despite a heads-up double play by the Eagles’ infield, the Knights were able to push across the game’s first run. Bemesderfer’s single would be the only hit for the Knights. Hempfield’s season ends with a record of 13-7. The Knights entered district play as the seventh seed.

Mount Joy Sportsmen Post Schedule The Mount Joy Sportsmen’s Association, 85 Range Road, Mount Joy, offers a variety of programs and facilities, including a 14-position, indoor, 25yard pistol range; a 12-position, 30-yard, indoor archery range; a six-position, indoor airgun range; and a covered outdoor rifle and pistol range with positions at 25, 50, 100 and 200 yards. Regularly scheduled activities include trap shooting every Tuesday from 6 p.m. until dark. A cost has been set per relay for 25 birds, and this activity is open to the public. The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will perform the first concert in the summer series to benefit the scholarship fund of the Musical Art Society of Lancaster. The concert will be held on Tuesday, June 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bachman Center at Homestead Village, 633 Community Way, Lancaster. The Musical Art Society of Lancaster promotes opportunities for education and performance for young musicians. The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band, directed by Howard Boots, consists of 50 members from across Lancaster County, and performs a wide range of musical styles. The Brazilian couple plays Latin-flavored music with an expanded appeal. “They have a wonderful sound,” said Deck, who described MINAS as bossa nova. “It’s very danceable without being hard driving,” he said. “It’s bringsomeone-to-dance-with kind of music.” Lachy Doley, a Hammond organ player who is visiting from Australia, will play on Sunday, July 21. “He is the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond organ. He pounds away,” said Deck. July will finish up with Celtic band Réalta on Sunday, July 28. The Sunday, Aug. 4, concert will feature Danny Kortchmar and Friends, studio musicians known for backing up Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and others. “They will play lots of familiar music,” said Deck. On Sunday, Aug. 11, country music singer Phil Vassar will play at the park. “His songs are very Americana country,” said Deck. On Saturday, Aug. 17, a special event highlighting the 50th anniversary of Woodstock will feature local artists and more well-known songs. The Sunday, Aug. 18, concert will feature blues artist Davy Knowles, and the season will conclude on Aug. 25 with the Cajun-flavored sounds of Terrance Simien and Zydeco Experience. “He is very engaging and a big crowd pleaser,” shared Deck. On Saturday, June 8, local artist Corty Byron will play Beatles tunes in a “Post White Album” show, and on Sunday, June 9, Seven Bridges, a nationally touring Eagles tribute band, will take to the park stage. Another June show will feature Allegro, which will return for a Father’s Day performance on Sunday, June 16. Gospel and soul singer Liz Vice will bring her indie rockinfused sounds to the park on Sunday, June 23, and the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” will play a patriotic concert on Sunday, June 30, in conjunction with a fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day. Program To Spotlight Local Inventor Office Of Aging To Offer Vouchers On Thursday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., “Remembering Inventor-Machinist Chester Ruth and Celebrating the Cradle of Tolerance and Diversity in Southeastern Pennsylvania” will take place at Landis Valley Christian Fellowship, 2420 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster. Gwendolyn M. Ruth Dickinson will share a presentation on her recollection of her grandfather, William Chester Ruth, as a creative mechanic and spiritual and family leader. The presentation will be followed by a light lunch and then a talk by Dr. Leroy Hopkins, retired Millersville University professor. Hopkins will present historical context for the Lancaster and Chester county area as a place of tolerance and opportunity. Born in Chester County, Ruth moved by
the early 20th century to Gap, where he had a blacksmith and machine shop. The son of a South Carolina slave, he was by the early 1920s a well-known and capable blacksmith to Amish, Mennonite, and other farm families of eastern Lancaster and western Chester counties. His genius for solving mechanical problems led him to design and patent a machine feeder used between the thresher and straw baler, a cinder-spreading truck, selfraising elevator, and other machines. He also followed in his father’s footsteps as a lay leader of his church. Hopkins will talk about the Underground Railroad and displaced African-Americans, Quaker ethics and abolitionism, and Pennsylvania German agricultural and work craft
technology, and he will suggest how the interplay made this region of the state a continuing success of William Penn’s experiment. After the speakers’ presentations, Bruce Bomberger, curator, will be available at the permanent agricultural exhibit in the Bitzer Building at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, Landis Valley Road off Oregon Pike, Lancaster, to interpret and answer questions about machinery built by Ruth that is on display. The free event includes a complimentary lunch at noon, but preregistration is required by Tuesday, June 4. In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Lancaster County Office of Aging will begin distributing 2019 Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers to eligible people on Wednesday, June 5. The nutrition vouchers can be exchanged for Pennsylvania-grown fruits and vegetables through November at participating farmers markets and roadside stands. To be eligible, an individual must be at least 60 years of age, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household income of less than $22,311 for one person or less than $30,044 for two. Those living in nursing homes or other residential facilities where meals are provided are not eligible for this program.

Age-Friendly City Gala Set A Fete d’Or is planned for Thursday, June 13, to celebrate Lancaster city’s official recognition as an “age-friendly” city. The Lancaster Downtowners, working with the city, will hold the catered event in the Atrium of the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 6 to 9 p.m. The gold-themed event will feature food from a local eatery, a themed dessert by a local candy business, and beverages. The Rue de la Pompe will provide music, and the mayor of Lancaster will address the attendees. Don’t be ready to give things up,” Jackson advised, noting that he spoke from experience. “And join more clubs. I would have come out of my shell sooner if I hadn’t waited until junior year. I took a lot more risks (then) and joined things that I didn’t expect to like, but they turned out to be my best memories of Hempfield.” Ruby concurred with Jackson, adding, “Don’t be afraid to try new things.” She related that she battled nerves when she was introduced to sports business as a sophomore. Ruby managed boys’ soccer for three years and boys’ volleyball for one year, and she completed an internship at a sports marketing firm last year. She plans to study marketing - especially sports marketing and management - at West Chester University and ultimately hopes to work for the National Football
League. “Use the resources the school gives you,” she recommended, attributing part of her confidence in pursuing her goals to the high school’s gifted program. “The gifted program helps you understand what you’re interested in,” said class president Maria Karamanos. Membership in Future Business Leaders of America helped Maria to narrow her interests, and guidance counselors finetuned her focus. As a result, she will study supply chain management and information systems at Penn State University. “Don’t forget to have fun.
