The ship was hit once, repaired, and then hit again a few months later, and it sunk enveloped in flames. Witmer was among the 188 survivors. “Cause For Paws” Will Support UDS Service Dogs By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“People love puppies,” remarked Lori Breece, UDS Service Dogs program manager. Breece hopes that a love for puppies, dogs in general, and service dogs in particular will inspire many people to participate in Cause for Paws, a 5K Fun Run, Walk, and Wheelchair Roll that will be held on Saturday, June 8, at 8 a.m. at HACC Central Pennsylvania’s Community College - Lancaster Campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. “We are determining whether we will continue holding the event,” Breece said, noting that a successful event would have 200 entrants. “We’re looking at other opportunities (for fundraising).” Cause for Paws has been designed to
appeal to people with a range of abilities. The entire course is paved, and because it is located entirely on HACC’s campus on a weekend, there will be no traffic. “It’s good for families and safe,” Breece commented. Awards will be given to the people who complete the course the fastest, but there will be other activities available that morning. A Zumba warm-up will be offered at 7:30 a.m. Face painting will be available, and a magician will make balloon animals. New this year, children in kindergarten through grade five will be able to test their agility on a course that will include ladder drills, over/under, hula hoops, cone weaves, tunnels, and a 50-yard dash. The agility course will open at 10 a.m. There is a cost to participate, and prizes will be awarded. See Cause For Paws pg 7

Mountville Lawn Concert Series Announced Going For The Gold At Senior Games The Mountville Community Services Foundation will again sponsor a series of lawn concerts in the borough, known as the Mountville Lawn Concert Series. Attendees are welcome to bring chairs and blankets to make themselves comfortable while they listen to the music on the lawn of the Mountville Church of the Brethren, located at the intersection of College Avenue and Clay Street. In the event of rain, the concerts will be held inside the church. There is no cost to attend the concerts, but donations will be accepted. The series is supported by the Mountville Welfare Association - Ed Froelich Trust Fund. The concerts will be held on Sundays from June 2 to Aug. 18, with no program on June 30. The Belle Tones will perform in the Mountville Lawn Concert Series on July 7. Free concerts will be held on the lawn of Mountville Church of the Brethren from June 2 to Aug. 18, with no program on June 30.
The 31st annual Lancaster Senior Games, held May 6 to 10, had another record-breaking year for attendance with a total of 1,004 participants and more than 335 volunteers. According to organizer Lisa Paulson of the Lancaster County Office of Aging, this was the first time that participation numbers broke the 1,000 mark. “People are having fun, and they just love doing it,” remarked committee member Sandy Hess in regards to the record-breaking participation. “The whole idea is to get anybody 55 and up to keep moving. And it’s not just physical; it’s about using your mind, too.” The bulk of the events took place at Spooky Nook Sports, with shuttle buses running to events held at other locations, including the Lancaster YMCA, Amos Herr Park, Hempfield High School, Evergreen Golf Course, Leisure Lanes, Buchmiller Park,

Lititz resident Carl Risser was among the dozens of individuals gathered under sunny skies at Amos Herr Park in Landisville on May 7 for the horseshoes competition. Risser earned first place for the 80- to 84-year-old division and also participated in bocce, ladder golf, shuffleboard, basketball, and the soccer penalty kick. “I love all of the games,” said Risser. “I love water volleyball too, but

Darts, bocce, and cornhole were among the most popular events, with more than 300 registrants each. Hess, who has been volunteering on the Senior Games committee for more than 20 years, noted that organizers adjust the event offerings from year to year according to what people seem to be interested in. “Every year we tweak something to make it work a little better,” said Hess. For instance, bridge is no longer offered due to waning interest, but now there is a pinochle tournament. Sometimes event demonstrations are scheduled into the week to test the waters before adding something to the official competition list for the next year. New additions for 2019 included ladder golf, a Nook exercise sampler, and Pilates, as
they don’t have that yet.” Formerly of New Holland, Risser said that it was when he moved into Brethren Village in 2007 that he really became active in recreational sports. He does a lot of running, goes to the exercise room on a daily basis, and has been participating in the Senior Games for at least eight years. Alan Ruby of Akron and Barry Lynch of Lancaster took first and second place, respectively, in the 85- to 89-year-old division for horseshoes. This was not the first time that Ruby and Lynch had contended against each other for the championship in horseshoes, and yet: “We’re still friends,” said Ruby with a laugh. Neither Ruby nor Lynch practices horseshoes throughout the year, but they both work out regularly at a local athletic Akron resident Alan Ruby club where they are part of the Silver (left) won first place and Sneakers program. Ruby remarked, “I just Barry Lynch earned second love the people here and the fellowship place in the 85- to 89-year-old that we have. A Memorial Day observance to honor America’s fallen military service members is scheduled for Monday, May 27, at Lancaster Cemetery, 205 E. Lemon St., Lancaster. Red Rose Blue Star Moms, a newly chartered chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America Inc. (BSMA), will conduct a program at 1 p.m. Following the short program, attendees will have the opportunity to place a single rose on the stone of each of the 1,037 veterans interred within the cemetery’s borders and offer a moment of gratitude. Manheim is well-known for the magic that happens in the football stadium under the glow of Friday night lights every fall, but come summertime there is another big and bright event that draws people downtown: the Rock-N-Glow 5K. Organized by the Manheim Chamber of Commerce, this year’s event, the seventh annual, is set to take place on Saturday, June 1, beginning in historic Market Square. Festivities will start at 6 p.m. with a pre-race party featuring music provided by a disc jockey, along with food trucks and children’s activities. New for this year, students from Manheim Central High School (MCHS) sports teams and the marching band will host activities including a soccer shoot, a basketball throw, face painting, and more. Plus, special surprise guests will take turns in a dunk tank. Chamber coordinator Kelly Lauver is also excited about the addition of a Kids Color Fun Run. The half-mile run will step off at 7:30 p.m. Children ages 5 to 12 are welcome to sign up for the fun run in advance at https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/ Manheim/RockNGlow5K. Proceeds from the Kids Color Fun Run and student-led activities will support MCHS’ involvement with the Herren Project, a nationwide initiative led by former NBA basketball player Chris Herren to educate students on the dangers of substance abuse and encourage positive life decisions. Herren spoke to students at MCHS last year about reaching his lifelong dream to play in the NBA only to lose it all to a struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. “We really want to continue that important conversation in our community,” noted Lauver. Portions of those roads will be closed to vehicular traffic from approximately 8 p.m. to midnight. Post-race festivities will include an awards presentation and more music, food, and dancing. Stiegel Glassworks 1976 hand-blown glass trophies will be awarded to the overall male and female winners, as well as to the male and female winners in several age brackets. Sacred Heart Middle School students have a double period for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) each week. Beginning this school year, students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades spend an hour and a half each week working as a team solving various problems. Sixth-graders were recently challenged to develop a useful product out of recycled materials. Their products included a refillable dog food container, a basketball hoop to make throwing away trash fun, a special breakfast tray, recycled shoes and bottles and a way to filter rain water and make it useful.

On Thursday, May 23, Dr. Holly Brewer will join LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, for a Regional History Colloquium, “Slavery and the Declaration of Independence.” The program will take place in Ryder Hall. A speaker’s reception will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the main presentation at 4:30 p.m. Brewer will discuss the anti-slavery sentiment in Jefferson’s original draft of the Declaration of Independence and the vigorous debates it engendered. Brewer is the Burke Professor of American History and an associate professor at the University of Maryland. She works on debates about justice in early America and the British Empire through the Revolutionary Period and into the 19th century. She is the author of “By Birth or Consent: Children, Law, and the Anglo-American Revolution in Authority,” as well as the article “Entailing Aristocracy in Colonial Virginia.” She is currently finishing a book on the ideological origins of slavery in early America and the British Empire for which she received a Guggenheim Fellowship. Mom’s House Will Hold Golf Event Mom’s House of Lancaster has rescheduled its 26th annual fundraising Golf Classic for Monday, June 10, to raise money for program needs at Mom’s House. The Hempfield High School Quiz Bowl team represented the Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 at the 2019 Pennsylvania State Academic Competition, held on April 26. The Black Knight quartet claimed the state championship during the competition, which featured premier teams from throughout the commonwealth. Team members included seniors William Yeager, Ryan Zhang, and Nishant Balepur, as well as 10th-grader Carsten Brodbeck. Through this victory, the Hempfield students have earned the right to compete at the High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta during Memorial Day weekend. The Hempfield Area Democratic Committee has named Sinclaire Schuetze of Lancaster as the seventh annual recipient of its Paul and Jan Wright Senior Scholarship. The award, given to a graduating high school senior in the Hempfield School District, recognizes a student who, according to the committee, best represents the next generation of Democratic leaders. Schuetze is a senior at Hempfield High School. She is involved at her school as the secretary of Anchor Club and as the editor-inchief of “The Knight’s Standard” magazine. Sinclaire is an advocate for the National Marfan Foundation. She wrote a book, “Stories From the Heart,” that includes essays from people within the Marfan community. Her goal was to not only bring awareness to Marfan syndrome but also comfort those affected. Additionally, she has lobbied in Washington D.C., on Capitol Hill for the protection of health care for pre-existing conditions.

Mollitor graduated from Hempfield High School in 2016 after playing four seasons of lacrosse there. In addition to her athletic acheivement, Mollitor also made the dean’s list last semester.

After completing his education at Millersville University, Long helped to found SiteStrux Inc., acquired in 2016, before joining the team at Listrak, where he served as a senior sales executive and led the company’s expansion westward, opening its first satellite office in Denver, Colo. The girls’ lacrosse team, which entered district play as the second seed behind Manheim Township, earned a first-round bye and hosted a quarterfinal match against 10th-seeded Central Dauphin last Wednesday. The Black Knights took care of business with a 17-10 victory as Lizzie Yurchak poured in eight goals. Head coach Elizabeth Erb surmised that the Lancaster-Lebanon League title game defeat to Manheim Township on May 9 might have sparked her squad. “We had the chance to fight again after the loss in the league playoffs,” she said. “After a loss in that game and the bye on Monday, we were ready and excited to have another opportunity.” Hempfield surged ahead to a 12-5 halftime lead.
The offense was also powered by Lindsey Durkota and Kelsea Dague, who scored four goals each. “Our shot selection definitely improved as the game went on,” Erb remarked. “We started off a little less than I would’ve liked in terms of conversion - finding the back of the net.” Yurchak was finding the open shots and rising to the occasion. “She sets herself up for those plays,” said Erb. “It’s hard to hold her back. Other teams struggle with that a lot just seeing what she has done against tougher opponents. She raises the level and turns it into something positive on the field. MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition BOYS’ LACROSSE Bobby Griffith and Kohl Wesner came up huge in the opening round of the District Three Class-AAA boys’ lacrosse playoffs on Tuesday. The two seniors combined for 13 of the 21 goals in the Knights’ 21-7 drubbing of State College at Landisville. Griffith finished seven of those goals and added an assist. Wesner scored six times and assisted on one goal. Grayson Dague notched a hat trick and also had an assist. Cameron Aksu scored twice and dished out five assists. Also scoring twice was Tyler Blew. Ryan Heuston
outscored the Panthers 5-2 the rest of the way and posted an 11-7 win. Matt Heuston’s hat trick, which came with an assist, along with two goals and two assists by Griffith led the way. Wesner and Jacob Notoli each netted two goals. Aksu and Dague each chipped in with a goal and an assist as Hempfield out-shot the opposition 1715. Weist made eight saves, helping the Knights reach the semifinal round and a rematch with Manheim Township, scheduled for Tuesday, May 21. Regardless of the outcome, the top four teams in District Three 3A will advance
The tenacity Warwick showed in Thursday’s battle for a league trophy was indicative of this rivalry. Hempfield went up 2-0 with victories of 25-23 and 25-21. Warwick didn’t let up in the third set, finally serving up the winning point in a 29-27 win. The Knights’ Elliot De La Torre drilled the match-ending point over the net for a 26-24 triumph in the fourth set. With the 3-1 win, Hempfield brought home the L-L League trophy for a record 23rd time. Ryan Givens gave the Knights 13 clutch kills plus a match-high five blocks. Ben Crabtree served up two aces. Colsen Hunt distributed 36 assists and Alex Drager’s defense resulted in 14 digs. Adam Kurtz led the Warriors with 14 kills. Incidentally, Hempfield was coming off a 3-0 defeat of Manheim Central in the semis, winning three close sets by scores of 28-26, 25-23 and 25-21. In that match, Adam Brossman drilled 16 kills while Hunt passed 28 assists. Givens, De La Torre and Owen Hanzelman each notched two blocks,
and Crabtree finished with three kills. The Knights didn’t have long to rest after the league championship match. They moved straight into the District Three Class-AAA playoffs the following evening. Central York was the site of the opening-round match where Hempfield shut out Central Dauphin 3-0. Hunt came through with five digs and 20 assists. De La Torre led the team in kills with seven while Brossman served up three aces. The Knights won 25-22, 25-20 and 25-22. The fifth-seeded Knights advance to the quarterfinals, which will be played as two doubleheaders - Cumberland Valley and Northeastern as the hosts. TRACK The District Three Class 3A track & field championships took place at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium on Friday and Saturday, May 17-18. Cahsia Page showed off her speed in the 100-meter dash, finishing fourth with a time of 12.38 seconds, earning five team points for the Hempfield girls.
She also took sixth in the 300-m hurdles with a time of 46.55 seconds. In addition to those medals, Page ran the 200 at a 26.38 clip, earning eighth place there. In the boys’ competition, senior Justin Rittenhouse finished an impressive sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:32.31. In the relays, the girls earned another medal on Friday with a Page anchoring fellow juniors Ava Hostetler, Megan Grube and Alexa Pitts in the 4x100. They posted a time of 48.93 and finished fourth. Grube and Pitts also competed in the 400, finishing sixth and 10th, respectively, with times of 58.35 and 58.84.

Hostetler captured seventh place in the girls’ long jump with a 16-foot10.50 jump. The Hempfield foursome of Bella Hollenbach, Delaney Minder, Bella Schwalm and Gabriella Hollinger claimed 10th in the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:44.63. Tanner Hess turned in a time of 50.78 in the boys’ 400, finishing 11th. Daegan Stoltzfus was 20th (52.21) in the same event. Jack Mieszkalski’s time of 1:59.19 in the boys’ 800 was good for 11th in that event. In the boys’ field events on Friday, Jaden Lopez recorded a distance of 467.75 in the shot put, which ranked 13th.

to states. BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL The rivalry between Warwick and Hempfield on the volleyball court has produced memorable matches this season. Their regular season clashes were split with Warwick winning on April 4 and Hempfield taking the April 30 rematch. They finished with identical records in Section One and a one-match playoff at Elizabethtown on May 9 went Warwick’s way. Hempfield went into the league playoffs as the second seed from Section One. After defeating Cocalico and Manheim Central, the Knights and Warriors had one more rematch - this one for the league championship.

Concert In Park To Highlight Memorial Day By Ann Mead Ash
More than a year ago, Lititz merchant Gaylord Poling contacted the board of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) to suggest that the group play a concert in Lititz Springs Park near Memorial Day. The event would revive a tradition from the past. Poling teamed up with Stephen Armbruster of a local bank, and the two worked with representatives of the William and Jemima Brossman Charitable Foundation and the Irene Weidman Charitable Trust to sponsor a concert scheduled for the Saturday prior to Memorial Day 2018. “We didn’t get to play in the park because the weather was really wet,” lamented Mary Ellen Davis, LSO board chair. “It was humid
and threatening rain.” The concert was moved to the Warwick High School (WHS) auditorium, where the musicians played to a standing-room-only audience. “We are hopeful this year (the weather) will be a little bit better,” said Davis of the free LSO concert that is planned for Saturday, May 25, at 7 p.m. in Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. The concert, which will feature patriotic music, a pyrotechnics display, and well-known show tunes, will be held in the band shell at the back of the park. Should there be inclement weather, the event will move to the WHS auditorium, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. Davis noted that a change in venue would be announced by Thursday, May 23. Davis said that the concert will begin
with the national anthem, and patriotic selections will include some Sousa marches, “God Bless America,” and the “1812 Overture,” which will feature fireworks in place of the cannon shots in the song. Davis added that audiences should recognize many of the selections. “This is what we call a pops concert, so we will play a lot of show tunes. It is music that everyone will know and sing along to,” she said. Among the songs that will be included in the 75minute concert will be tunes from “Evita,” “A Chorus Line,” and “Les Misérables.” The 50-member orchestra that will play in the park will be conducted by Stephen Gunzenhauser. Davis noted that LSO has been performing for more than 70 seasons and that she believes the group is the oldest

Gallery To Feature Local Artist The Art Gallery at United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC), 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, will feature Brian Lehman as the UZRC Artist of the Month in May. The exhibit offers the viewer a retrospective of years of a daily sketchbook practice in both pencil and watercolor. Some of the works are from a period where Lehman’s sketchbook practice was just beginning in Rome, where he spent seven months studying during a sabbatical from teaching. While exploring the city and surrounding countryside, Lehman started to make small sketches a part of his daily habit, and he continued this practice upon returning to Lancaster County. Lehman’s busy schedule of teaching, volunteering and

parenting made it difficult to find time to work on his art. He decided to simply embrace what was available each day, which was typically short periods of waiting or listening. Lehman now never leaves home without his pocket-size sketchbook, with which he visually chronicles the lives of his children, his family members and himself. Lehman is the resident artist at First United Methodist Church of Lancaster and the chair of the Hempfield High School art department.
