Hempfield Foundation Plans Golf Tournament

The Hempfield Foundation will host its annual golf tournament on Friday, June 5, at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville. The event will bring together local businesses, community leaders, and other supporters to further the work of the foundation, an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students, educators, and programs within the Hempfield School District.

The tournament serves as one of the foundation’s primary fundraising events, supporting teacher innovation grants, student scholarships, and career exploration initiatives that impact more than 7,000 students throughout the district. Each year, funds raised through the event help bring creative classroom ideas to life, expand access to learning experiences, and connect students with opportunities intended to prepare them for success beyond graduation.

Cub Scout Pack 37 has announced a Memorial Day flea market. The event will take place on Monday, May 25, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hempfield Fire Department pavilion, 19 W. Main St., Landisville.

During the flea market, the Scouts will run a concession stand offering food items such as breakfast sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, and smoked pulled pork sandwiches. The funds raised will help to support Pack 37.

The Cub Scout pack seeks to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices throughout their lives by instilling values such as trustworthiness, loyalty, and kindness. The Scouts practice these values through projects like Scouting for Food, during which they collect and sort thousands of pounds of food for a local food pantry. The pack also helps to provide funding and volunteers to prepare warm meals

PA CareerLink Lancaster County caters to both groups of people and helps individuals to navigate this critical portion of their lives.

“It depends on the individual,” said Chris Roggenbaum, who’s been the site administrator at PA CareerLink Lancaster County for three years. “Some people may say they have a job. For me, my job is part of my career. It’s part of my path. Some people are looking for jobs. A lot of times, people put their identities into whether they have a job or a career.”

An arm of the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, PA CareerLink Lancaster County, which is located at 1046 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, is a job center that provides locals opportunities to improve themselves financially, to enhance their lives and to selfactualize. PA CareerLink Lancaster County’s hours of operation are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“A lot of people come to us thinking we’re the unemployment office, but we are not,” said Roggenbaum. “Our goal is to get individuals back to work or further their skills for their current job. We’re here to help people enter or re-enter the local work force. There are a variety of ways to do that.”

Chamber to Present Awards

The 2026 honoree is Marshall Snively and the Lancaster City Alliance. Since moving to Lancaster in 2007, Snively has been instrumental in shaping work to fuel the city’s momentum, first through the James Street Improvement District and now through Lancaster City Alliance since its inception. “Adopt a Pantry” Program Posted

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) team and the Lancaster County Master Gardeners invite backyard gardeners to join their collaborative efforts to increase fresh food access to those in need.

This year’s goal is to engage 50 gardeners in Lancaster and Dauphin counties to grow and donate 25,000 pounds of produce. Items such as fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits are in demand specifically for any of the participating CPFB pantries.

Gardeners with any level of experience, including beginners, are welcome to participate, and Master Gardeners will help to answer questions throughout the growing season and provide in-depth information for Adopt a Pantry

Healing Our Planet Sets Meeting

Healing Our Planet (HOP) will offer a program on Friday, May 22, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Attendees should use the entrance on Concord Street.

Attendees will plant flower and herb seeds to take home. All supplies will be provided. The group will also start planning kindness activities for local communities, share ideas through a talking circle activity, and enjoy snacks and social time. A youth art and craft table will be available to keep younger people engaged during the program.

HOP exists to cultivate a world where people are united and kind to each other and the environment. The program seeks to unify communities with kindness programs, events, projects, the arts, and actions for people of all ages.

Organization Seeks Donations, Volunteers

Community Clearinghouse Agency Inc. is starting a new program to serve senior citizens in the Lancaster area. Those age 70 or older can receive money through the program to help with pressing needs, up to a maximum of $1,000. Funds may be used for needs such as groceries, utilities, doctor visits, medication, other small bills, or various other needs. There is a onetime fee to cover the account setup.

The organization is seeking donations of a laptop and tablet with the Windows 11 operating system, as well as men’s

PA CareerLink Lancaster County offers self-service job searches, case management services, mock interviews, résumé assistance, training, workshops and youth and adult programming. PA CareerLink also hosts job fairs and works with local employers to sponsor job fairs.

“I used to have a boss who told me, ‘Hey, a job or having a career is an important part of people’s identities,’” said Roggenbaum. “When you meet people for the first time, it’s not too far into the conversation when you ask them, ‘What do you do for a living?’”

PA CareerLink collaborates with numerous Lancaster County employers, who can post current openings on the organization’s website free of charge. PA CareerLink also works with human service agencies, manufacturing agencies, staffing agencies and the Lancaster County Assistance Office.

It has its finger on the pulse of the employment community.

More than 10,000 people pass through the doors of 1046 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, every single year.

“A lot of these people have lost their jobs or need some sort of assistance,” said Roggenbaum. “We have individuals looking for training. We have veterans or spouses of veterans who have relocated to the area. We have people with disabilities. It’s a variety of people in different phases of their career journeys, from first jobs to starting

over.”

The current unemployment rate in Lancaster County stands at 3.3%, well below Pennsylvania’s rate of 4.3%. Among the top Lancaster employers are Lancaster General Hospital, Mutual Assistance Group, the county of Lancaster and Giant Food Stores.

“One of the things we’re proud of in Lancaster is that we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state, and that’s consistent,” said Roggenbaum. “We’re usually below the state rate. Lancaster County is bustling. We have a lot going on here.”

The causes of unemployment are as varied as the types of employment available here.

“Some people are unemployed,” said Roggenbaum. “Companies significantly lay off, or factors cause ripple effects. It could be the field. Individuals may go from one warehouse to another. Sometimes transportation or child care are factors. Some of it is just lost jobs. Things like that do happen.”

PA CareerLink was established in Lancaster County

in 2001; the site is one of the organization’s 66 locations in the state. More than 40 staff members work at PA CareerLink Lancaster County, but they are not technically employed by PA CareerLink, which receives both federal and state funding.

Those staff members operate an on-site food pantry, collect blankets for those in need and volunteer in the community.

“PA CareerLink Lancaster County is a group of proud partners working together,” said Roggenbaum. “PA CareerLink is an umbrella. I wear a PA CareerLink shirt, I represent PA CareerLink, but I don’t work for PA CareerLink. Our clients don’t care about that. They just care about the services we provide.

“We get people who come in our doors regularly who didn’t know we existed or didn’t know that there was anyone who could help them,” concluded Roggenbaum. “We don’t want to be the best-kept secret. We’re here to help - help people get back to work.”

Resource Sharing App Launched

A new resource called the Lancaster County Food Exchange is available to help food banks, pantries, and community organizations share resources, reduce waste, and get food to families in need. The organization’s purpose is to “make sure no good food goes unused and no family goes hungry.”

Terry Kile had the idea for the food exchange when The Loft Community Partnership in Millersville received an overage of 4,800 clamshells of blue -

berries. Kile, a local tech entrepreneur, created the Lancaster County Food Exchange mobile web application using coding and some artificial intelligence. Incorporated as Food Exchange Resources in June 2025 and certified as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service, the Lancaster County Food Exchange was beta-tested by several food pantry directors and employees prior to its launch on Jan. 15.

Food Exchange aims to help stretch limited resources further and strengthen collaboration among food assistance providers countywide. The mobile app allows registered food pantry volunteers to list surplus inventory directly from a smartphone, request needed items from partner organizations across Lancaster County, coordinate pickups and deliveries, and view real-time shared inventory for better planning and distribution.

Field Trips Highlight Science and the Arts

Montessori Academy of Lancaster kindergarten and elementary students recently took part in field trips intended to bring learning to life through science exploration and artistic expression.

Elementary students traveled to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in Philadelphia, where they explored interactive exhibits, discovered wildlife, and viewed towering dinosaur skeletons. Through hands-on, inquiry-based experiences, students deepened their understanding of ecosystems, biodiversity, and the natural world. The exhibits and immersive displays aligned closely with the students’ classroom science learning.

In addition, kindergarten and elementary students attended a performance of “Doodle POP” at the Ware Center in Lancaster. Part of the Family Fun Fest series, “Doodle POP” told the story of an underwater adventure through whiteboard illustrations, interactive animation, and music. The nonverbal performance created an inclusive experience.

Dr. Sharee Livingston will receive the ATHENA Award, which celebrates the potential of all women as valued leaders and recognizes those who champion their success. Livingston was born and raised in the inner city of Harrisburg. She always knew she wanted to become a physician, developing an early interest in women’s health and beginning her journey as a candy striper at Community General Osteopathic Hospital at age 9. Livingston earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and received her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed an obstetrics and gynecology residency at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey.

In 2006, she began practicing medicine at UPMC Lititz, and she is currently the OB-GYN department chair. She is a member of the UPMC Lititz board of trustees.

of the Diversifying Doulas Initiative, and a co-founder of FLOW (For the Love of Women).

Joanne Ladley will receive the Exemplar Award, which celebrates a leader whose lasting impact has shaped the business community, their respective industry, and Lancaster County. Ladley is a second-generation leader and former co-owner of Kitchen Kettle Village in Lancaster County, where she helped guide the growth of a single store into a thriving destination of more than 40 shops, restaurants, and lodging experiences welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. She also served as owner and operator of The Inn at Kitchen Kettle Village and as president of Village Services, overseeing leasing and operations across the village.

Beyond Kitchen Kettle Village, Joanne contributed to the broader business and nonprofit community as a consultant, mentor, and thought leader in family business succession and organizational culture. Southeast Region of PFBC Promotes Waterway

The southeast portion of Pennsylvania is the most densely populated part of a predominantly rural state. But that doesn’t mean all those residents have to travel far to enjoy Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreational activities.

One of the main initiatives of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is to provide and promote natural fun in and around water.

“I think we really need to make people aware of all the opportunities around them,” said Andy Desko, who’s been the outreach and education coordinator for the Southeast Region of the PFBC for 18 years. “We want to help introduce folks to them right in their backyards. There are many accesses (to water) out there. People may not be aware that there are boat accesses near them. I want to inspire people to check out the opportunities.”

The PFBC’s Southeast Region office is headquartered just north of the town of Lititz, at 255 W. Brubaker Valley Road, Lititz, at Speedwell Forge Lake. The Southeast Region office, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, primarily serves as the rules and regulation enforcement headquarters for PFBC, but it does offer some services and amenities.

As outreach and education coordinator, Desko does work out of the Lititz office periodically, but he spends the majority of his work time in the field and around water.

acting with people from all walks of life,” said Desko. “I grew up in a very rural county. I just enjoy the variety of opportunities around here. We all enjoy fishing. We all come from different backgrounds, but we share this love of being on the water. It feels good to introduce people to these sports.”

Housed in a renovated farmhouse, PFBC’s Southeast Region office employs administrative staff and law enforcement or Water Conservation Officers, who enforce fishing and boating regulations, creel limits and water pollution rules, as well as promote water safety and assist in trout stocking operations. The Southeast Region office also processes boat registrations, launch permits and discounted fishing licenses for disabled veterans, and it offers educational materials and opportunities for residents to borrow fishing rods.

“Our general mission is to protect, conserve and enhance the state’s aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities,” said Desko. “We do deliver educational programming in the Southeast Region. We do a lot of introductory programs, like teaching people how to fish and teaching people how to boat.”

phia counties and is home to a host of lakes; streams; and major waterways, like the Schuylkill, Delaware and Conestoga rivers.

The Susquehanna River serves as a boundary between the Southeast and Southcentral regions.

“There’s a diversity of experiences in the Southeast Region,” said Desko. “We have stocked trout streams and wild trout streams. There are also migratory fish; the Delaware River has shad coming up. There are paddling opportunities for whitewater kayaking, as well as gentle paddling on lakes and ponds.

“In other regions, mountains and backwoods serve as the backdrops,” continued Desko. “We have plenty of fishing opportunities here, but they may be in places you don’t expect them to be. There are places you can catch monster flathead catfish. There are a lot of places in this region where you can get into some exceptional

fishing; it’s just cities serve as the backgrounds instead of mountains.”

An inland state, Pennsylvania boasts a total of more than 86,000 miles of streams and rivers. In the state, nearly 850,000 fishing licenses, 350,000 boat registrations and 150,000 launch permits are sold each year, all of which help fund the PFBC.

The PFBC stocks 3.2 million raised trout in 684 streams and 130 lakes in Pennsylvania annually.

“We do see people across ages, from youth to retirees,” said Desko. “You have a lot of adults who are starting to mentor their children out on the water. When anglers were surveyed, they said the reason they go out is not to catch big fish; it’s to spend time with family and friends, unplug and get away for recreation. They’re looking to spend time in the outdoors and reset their minds.”

Auction Makes MTPL Available for Everyone

When you have a facility as nice as the Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL), you want it to be utilized. But the busier MTPL is, the more resources are required to operate it.

“We are the busiest library in the county,” said Rennae Newman, fundraiser for MTPL. “With as many patrons as we have, we need funding to support that value. That’s why fundraising is so important.

“We have many, many, many people from outside Manheim Township who use the library,” continued Newman. “It’s very important to give people an opportunity to support the library. Having fundraisers here at the library is a reminder to people that you’re getting all this stuff for free but someone has to pay for it.”

One of the ways MTPL funds programs, activities and resources is through its upcoming annual pop-up silent auction.

Currently, the library is seeking auction donations from local businesses and individuals, and then ultimately bidders interested in purchasing the items and merchandise.

Altruistic contributors can drop off their donations of goods, services, gift cards and experiences at MTPL, which is located at 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, or schedule to have them picked up by filling out a simple form at https://mtpl.info. The deadline to donate is Tuesday, May 26.

“We’re always actively seeking donations,” said Newman. “We reach out every year. We’re always looking for new patrons. We’re always looking to put together unique experiences. We have folks who drop off items at the front desk, and we go from there. We’re very flexible.

“Every item we get has at least one book added to it,” Newman added. “We’re a library; we want to promote literacy and reading.”

After the donations are collected, MTPL will conduct its 5th annual pop-up silent auction from Monday, June 8, through noon on Saturday, June 20, at the library. Individuals can acquire their bidding numbers on MTPL’s website or by visiting the library, where the items will be displayed.

Representatives from the library will reach out to the highest bidders at the conclusion of the silent auction.

“Just like all of our fundraisers, it raises funds and gets people into the library,” said Newman. “We want to do our fundraisers at the library. It gives people time to come here.”

Nearly 90 items will be available through MTPL’s pop-up silent auction, everything from sports memorabilia, sports tickets and designer handbags to framed art, stained glass and ceramics - even a ride to school on a fire truck for students. The library staff and departments from Manheim Township’s municipal government will also make available creative gift baskets that they pulled together.

“We try to offer things that hit a lot of different tastes,” said Newman, a resident of East Lampeter Township. “We have a lot of miscellaneous items. We have to wait for items to arrive, and then we have to pair them with other items.”

Organizers of MTPL’s pop-up silent auction are hoping to raise $10,000 for the library from the event.

In addition to purchasing supplies and books, the money will be used to fund programs like MTPL’s popular summer reading program for kids, as well as adult programming.

“It’s going to help support programming and supplies that go above and beyond what is budgeted for,” said Newman. “It’s not restricted. It’s for things we need in the library.”

MTPL is operated through municipal funding from Manheim Township and state funding from Pennsylvania. The library also receives grants for specific projects and conducts additional fundraisers like its summer reading celebration - which this year will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, in MTPL’s parking lot - an annual appeal, three book events throughout the year and another silent auction in November.

In addition to a host of seasonal employees, MTPL employs 24 year-round workers.

“We see ourselves as a community hub,” said Newman. “It’s a gathering place. People are coming here for everything and anything. We have folks who are constantly using our study rooms. We have people with disabilities using our facilities. We see a lot of consistent faces.

“Fifteen years ago, this building was built because there was a need,” concluded Newman. “That need has been supported by the community. It is not cheap to run this building, but it’s heavily used. The library continues to strengthen the community.”
