Jewish Family Services (JFS) of Lancaster will present a program on “Hate in Lancaster County” on Sunday, June 2, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of Congregation Shaarai Shomayim, 75 E. When discussing the Mountville VFW Memorial Day Parade recently, Reese-Hall Mountville VFW Post 8757 commander Bob Froelich was not sure at first if the parade that will be held on Saturday, May 25, should bear his organization’s name. Parade coordinator Beth Hess, however, insisted that the name is correct. “You fund it. You make sure it happens, and it’s to remember the veterans,” Hess pointed out to Froelich. At that, Froelich agreed, noting that the VFW honor guard will lead the
parade when it steps off at 10 a.m. from the Mountville Area Community Center at the intersection of College Avenue and Clay Street. The parade will travel down College and along Main Street, concluding at Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville. Following the honor guard will be military veterans and members of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Transportation will be provided for those who need it by the Rivertowne Trolley. The VFW auxiliary will be represented with a float. The Kiltie Band of York will also be positioned at the head of the queue. See Memorial Day Parade pg 2

him. Hess noted that Miller and his family have attended the ceremony for many years, and she is happy he agreed to speak. Then, all the attendees will receive carnations to put on the graves of veterans who are buried in the cemetery. Last year was the first time the organizers opted to have attendees participate rather than have Scout troops lay the flowers. “Everyone was touched because they could put them on graves of people they knew,” Hess commented. “It’s more personal.” To prepare for Memorial Day, the members of the Mountville VFW plan to place 72 dozen flags on veterans’ graves in and around the borough. In addition to honoring the dead, the Mountville VFW is dedicated to supporting the living. In 2018, the VFW distributed more than $60,000 to meet the needs of individuals and organizations. The post is preparing for another charitable contribution that will take place on Wednesday, June 12, when it will serve as a dinner stop for participants
in the PA Hero Walk event. As part of the walk, people hike from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh to raise money to support wounded veterans. Both the VFW and the auxiliary will present checks to the PA Hero Walk. The post is also planning to once again commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence on Thursday, July 4. The bell in the post’s tower will be rung 13 times for the original 13 colonies beginning at 2 p.m., which Froelich said is thought to be the time when the signing took place. New members are welcome to join the Mountville VFW and the auxiliary. There are requirements for membership, and interested individuals are welcome to stop by the post, 48 E. Main St., Mountville, to talk with a staff member. The post opens at noon daily and closes at 11:30 p.m. on weekdays and at 1:30 a.m. on weekends. Members of the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance (CCWA) have planned a fun and educational evening for the community on Wednesday, June 5, when they will host the 2019 Watershed Expo at the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 E. Adele Ave., Manheim. People of all ages are invited to attend the free expo, which will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. CCWA president Steve Gergely said that approximately 25 presenters will share information on various environmental topics such as spotted lanternfly, West Nile virus, streambank fencing, well water protection,

CCWA will also host a tree planting and stream cleanup that the community is invited to take part in on Saturday, May 18, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Mummau Park, 536 W. High St., Manheim. Signing up in advance is not necessary, but participants should bring work gloves and boots. CCWA will provide supplies for the tree planting and cleanup. “We anticipate planting between 150 and 200 trees,” said Gergely. “The cleanup will entail picking up any trash found along the steam banks in Mummau Park.” The CCWA is a nonprofit organization driven by local volunteers and community leaders. Its primary mission is promoting good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Creek Watershed in order to protect the Chiques Creek and preserve it for future

The national Student Television Network (STN) competition and conference recently took place in Seattle. Hempfield High School senior Taylor Hess
“EMS STRONG - National EMS Week has been declared by Gov. Tom Wolf, who encourages all citizens to recognize the value and the accomplishments of EMS providers and to thank them for their invaluable service to our communities,” said Marisa Seubert, marketing and development coordinator for Lancaster EMS. Lancaster EMS serves most of southern Lancaster County as well as some of the eastern and western parts of the county. It has a fleet of 45 vehicles operating from 11 locations. In 2018, Lancaster EMS responded to 37,831 requests for services. Seubert noted that in addition to emergency medical care, Lancaster EMS also provides nonemergency medical transport services, emergency medical technician and paramedic education, public health care and education programs, community paramedics, medical standby coverage at special events, and tactical paramedics to the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team. “National EMS Week is an optimal time to bring EMS providers and the community together through awareness and outreach events,” Seubert said. “We are offering the public an opportunity to

On Monday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the public is invited to attend open houses at the Millersville station, 100 E. Charlotte St., and the Lincoln Highway station, 1829 Lincoln Highway, Lancaster. Tours of the stations will be available, and visitors may meet staff members, learn about EMS, and observe demonstrations of hands-only CPR and Stop the Bleed. Tuesday, May 21, has been designated SAVE-A-LIFE Day. Lancaster EMS will be represented in Lancaster’s Penn Square from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mayor Danene Sorace is slated to read the National EMS Week proclamation at noon. During the event, Lancaster EMS will offer demonstrations of hands-only CPR, Stop the Bleed, and naloxone administration. Resources for opioid addiction, the safe disposal of medication, and stroke awareness will be available. A country music station will broadcast during the event, and Lancaster Barnstormers mascot Cylo will pose for pictures with attendees. Wednesday, May 22, will be EMS for Children Day. Lancaster EMS members will visit elementary schools in Penn Manor, Solanco, Conestoga Valley, and Lancaster school districts. Thursday, May 23, will be Safety Day. Lancaster EMS will have a booth at the Lancaster Barnstormers game and will provide demonstrations of hands-only CPR and Stop the Bleed, along with offering medication reconciliation, fall risks/risk assessment checklists, and pill boxes. Friday, May 24, will be EMS Recognition Day at the Millersville station, where Lancaster EMS will honor all clinical and nonclinical staff members. “We will salute our EMS professionals, who go above and beyond every day to create positive change in our community with long-lasting impact,” Seubert remarked. “Our Lancaster EMS EMTs (emergency medical technicians) and paramedics respond to emergency calls, perform lifesaving skills under stress, and provide patient care in intense situations. EMS is community care that takes time, energy, and heart. Our Lancaster EMS providers go the extra mile every day, 24/7.” A variety of restaurant and painting fundraisers to benefit Lancaster EMS have also been planned for the week. LCCTC FFA Fun Fair Set The Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) FFA Chapter members will host the seventh annual LCCTC FFA Fun Fair on Friday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Willow Street Campus of the LCCTC, 1730 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The event will be held rain or shine. The Fun Fair is open to the public, and there will be something for everyone. The petting zoo is free and will have a variety of farm animals, which may include calves, sheep, alpacas, rabbits, and others. Other activities will be available for a small fee, such as a dime pitch; face painting; an opportunity to sit in a big rig truck; pony rides, weather permitting; and other games. L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment, with three locations in Lancaster and Mechanicsburg, is celebrating its 87th anniversary. In 1932, Lester H. Brubaker opened a store providing the sales and service of farm equipment in Strasburg. At that time, the only appliances offered were large International freezers used mostly by farmers. In 1960, Donald H. Frank joined the sales and parts department at L.H. Brubaker. Shortly thereafter, Lester permitted General Electric (GE) to display appliances in the showroom. The first year L.H. Brubaker offered appliances, only 90 sold, but those sales were thanks to Donald. Considering appliance sales not to be a good business decision, Lester informed GE that he had decided to get out of the appliance business. GE countered with a compliment, saying that the manufacturer never liked to end business relationships with a reputable company that paid its bills on time, and it requested that a few pieces be displayed in a corner of the showroom and that Donald be allowed to sell them with the tractors and lawn mowers. Lester agreed. That year, Donald sold 295 pieces, and the following year saw sales of 525 appliances. The sales numbers continued to climb as years went by. In 1972, Donald and his wife, Elnora, bought L.H. Brubaker from Lester, and it became solely an appliance store. Counting the two Franks, the store had 11 employees. The following year, Donald’s oldest son, Donald L. Frank Sr., joined the family business. In the fall of 1974, L.H. Brubaker moved into a new store that sat beside the original location on Strasburg Pike. The facility at 340 Strasburg Pike, Lancaster, continues to be the corporate headquarters and main showroom. Hempfield hosted the LancasterLebanon League track and field championships on Friday and Saturday, May 10-11. The boys’ team finished in a three-way tie with Conestoga Valley and Cocalico, compiling 36 team points while the girls’ squad earned 31 points for a ninth-place finish.
The two squads were coming off their final dual meet of the regular season - a win for the boys and a close setback for the girls - against league rival Conestoga Valley on Monday, May 6. Some of the performances in that meet helped propel individuals into leagues. Among the top finishers in the boys’ championships for Hempfield
was sophomore Tanner Hess, taking second in the 400 in 50.86. In that same event, Daegan Stoltzfus took fifth (51.75). Hess also went on to take seventh in the 100 in 11.41. “Stoltzfus has been a sprinter for us this season,” head coach Curt Rogers said. “He had a phenomenal time in the CV meet that got him into the league meet. He ran a 52.0 against CV. Then he placed fifth overall in the league. He was all smiles because everything came together for him.” Jack Mieszkalski, who finished sixth (1:59.85) in the 800, was part of the 4x800 relay team that earned second place on Saturday. He joined fellow junior Andrew Deck, sophomore David Jackson and senior Justin Rittenhouse for a combined time of 8:08.78. “Mieszkalski and Rittenhouse have run every relay we’ve asked them to,”
said Rogers. Rittenhouse also earned fifth (4:23.94) in the 1,600 while the foursome of Mieszkalski, Deck, Stoltzfus and Hess claimed sixth (3:30.48) in the 4x400 relay. Jaden Lopez earned sixth in the shot put with a 45-foot-7.5 distance while Josiah Vieland’s triple jump of 40-3.75 was good for eighth place. “Josiah had jumped 40-6 in the CV meet, which was great,” Rogers noted. “He ended up with a league medal. “Jaden Lopez is our shot putter. He does all three throws,” continued the coach. “He hit over 48 feet consistently this year. In the leagues, he hit 46 feet. He has been working hard in the weight room. He has been a great leader for the throws this year.” The girls’ team featured a fourthplace finish in the 4x800 relay as Delaney Minder, Bella Hollenbach,

Isabella Schwalm, and Gabi Hollinger posted a time of 9:52.17. Cahsia Page not only placed an impressive second in the 300 hurdles at 45.18, she turned in a time of 12.40 in the 100 - good for fourth place. “Cahsia Page has devoted herself to working hard,” Rogers remarked. “She always has a positive attitude. “She tried the hurdles in the offseason,” Rogers added. “She qualified for districts in only her fourth time competing in the 300 hurdles.” Page also anchored the 4x100 team that also included Hostetler, Megan Grube and Alexa Pitts. They posted a third-place time of 49.12. Pitts went on to finish seventh (58.71) in the 400 and Page took eighth (26.11) in the 200. In the field events, Ava Hostetler’s long jump of 16-8.5 was good for fifth place. “Ava has been consistent throughout the season in high jump and long jump,” Rogers noted. “She has done well in the dual meets. She placed in the long jump against some phenomenal competition. She runs the 100 and the 4x100 as well. She goes event to event all throughout the meet.” In the close regular season meet at home on Monday the Hempfield girls fell short 86-64 to Conestoga Valley.
The loss dropped the Knights to 2-4 on the year. Schwalm, Minder, Hollinger and Hollenbach took the 4x800 relay in 12:12 in the Section One meet. Hollenbach also won the 800 (2:32.1) while Minder’s pace of 5:28.9 earned first in the 1,600. Paige Harrington, in the 3,200, ran a winning pace of 13:05. “They are the work horses of the distance crew,” Rogers said. “They will run anything from the 400 to the 3,200.” In the 100- and 200 sprints, Page posted winning times of 12.0 and 25.4, respectively. The 12.0 placed her fifth in the L-L League Honor Roll. By a nearly identical score, the Hempfield boys topped CV 86-64, including Jackson, Deck, Mieszkalski and Rittenhouse winning the 4x800 in 8:49.7. The victory was Hempfield’s first win of the season while the Buckskins fell to 0-6. On the individual side, Mieszkalski won the 800 in 2:00.4. Hess was a triple winner in the sprints, taking the 100 (10.6), the 200 (22.6) and the 400 (51.0). Justin Thomas won the 3,200 in in 10:40.3. “Hess is a sophomore and a real hard worker,” Rogers said. “He has become one of our main go-to guys

Starting pitcher Justin Lichtenwalner ripped a bases-loaded triple in that big inning. Lichtenwalner, who had escaped a bases-loaded jam as a pitcher in the first inning, walked to lead off the fourth. Jayden Ruby, who served as a courtesy runner, and Ty Vaughn scored on a two-run single by Alec Santiago. Three batters later, and with the bases loaded, C.J. Saylor took one for the team and was hit by a pitch to drive in another run. Cole Houser’s single plated one more run and Nick Fiore drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-0 Hempfield. Hempfield charged ahead for a 25-19 win in the opening set. Back came the Warriors with a 25-19 win and maintained momentum with a 25-21 win. The Knights were not about to give in with three straight sets to their rivals; they won the fourth by a 25-18 margin before Warwick slipped by with a 15-11 victory in the tiebreaker. Ryan Givens poured in 12 kills and had a match-high six blocks for the Knights. Colsen Hunt’s 38 assists led the squad as did Owen Hanzelman’s 12 digs. Ben Crabtree served up two aces. In the Cocalico match, which the Knights won 25-9, 25-18 and 25-19, Elliot De La Torre, who registered three blocks, and Givens had eight kills each. Hunt had four aces and 26 assists. Hanzelman and Adam Gallagher each finished with four digs. BASEBALL The Knights’ offense had a deluge of eight runs in the fourth inning of Saturday’s game against the Little Dutchmen. The hard work has paid off.” Lopez sent the discus 116-5 and the shot put 47-1.5 for wins in those events while Bradley Atkinson’s won the javelin with a 149-2. “He is a first-year senior who became our number one javelin thrower as the season progressed,” Rogers said. “He and Riley Good both made it to the league meet.” BOYS’ LACROSSE The boys’ lacrosse team won the L-L League championship behind six goals by Matt Heuston and three hat tricks on Thursday. The Knights topped Ephrata 13-9 on Tuesday at Penn Manor and went on to unseat arch rival Manheim Township as the league champ, claiming an 18-11 win at Warwick on Wednesday. It was the Knights’ first league title since 2013. “We won it in 2009, 2010 and 2013,” head coach Matt McAlpine remarked. “It started in the off-season with these boys’ commitment to our principles. The boys are believing in each other and it paid off on Thursday.” Hempfield took command of the Ephrata match early on, scoring eight times in the first quarter. Holding a 9-7 lead after three, the Knights outscored the Mounts 4-2 in the fourth. Kohl Wesner scored five times and added one assist. Cameron Aksu scored twice and assisted four times. Bobby Griffith notched a hat trick. Two goals plus an assist by Heuston helped Hempfield hang on. Grayson Dague netted one goal while Jacob Notoli recorded two assists. Heuston’s six goals plus hat tricks by Dague, Aksu and Wesner combined with a tremendous effort by Bryce Witmer helped the Knights bring home the league trophy. Witmer scored one goal and dished out five assists. Griffith also scored one and Notoli added an assist. Matt Weist had eight saves in the win. “Matt had been a little banged up,” said McAlpine. “He’s finally feeling healthy. He was playing with a purpose.” Asked what was the difference between this match and the two regular season encounters that ended in Township winning 17-9 and 12-10 McAlpine replied, “Discipline - absolute discipline. And all the guys believing in each other - the guy to your left or to your right,” he continued. “Whether it was a goal by us or by them, we had a ‘next play’ mentality.” VOLLEYBALL The Black Knights advanced to the L-L League semifinals with a 3-0 defeat of Cocalico on Friday night. The quarterfinal match at Manheim Central was the nightcap of a doubleheader. In the earlier match, the host Barons blanked the Buckskins 3-0. The Hempfield and Cocalico match was a clash between the second-place finishers in Section One and Section Two, respectively. And though it was the first round of the playoffs, it wasn’t the first playoff match of the week for Hempfield. On Thursday night, on the court at Elizabethtown, the Knights lost 3-2 to Warwick in what was a single-match playoff to decide the Section One title. Both teams entered this match with identical 11-1 records in league play, including a split in their two head-to-head regular season matches.

Music Friday Schedule Announced The 2019 Outdoor Music Friday season will open on Friday, May 17, in Binns Park, 100 N. Queen St. Music Friday’s outdoor season will run through September on the third Friday of each month. Each Music Friday will feature a signature concert in Binns Park and more than 20 street spots of live music around Lancaster city. Every third Friday of the month from May to September, the City of Lancaster hosts Music Fridays. Music Fridays are a collaborative effort between the City of Lancaster Office of Promotion and Music for Everyone to promote local talent, promote the city’s live music scene, and increase activity in Lancaster city for visitors and locals. The 2019 Millersville Parade will be supported by proceeds from a meat bingo event on Sunday, May 19, in the cafeteria at Penn Manor High School, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. Doors will open at noon, and an early bird game will start at 1:15 p.m. The first regular game will begin at 1:30 p.m. The event will include a special game,
opportunities to participate in giveaway drawings, and prizes of steaks, chicken, seafood, ribs, ham, pork chops, and more. Attendees may purchase food and beverages including hot dogs, barbecue, chicken corn soup, snacks, desserts, and cold beverages. Attendees should enter the building using the cafeteria entrance off the parking

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will present “Shostakovich Triumphant,” the group’s sixth and final concert of its 72nd season, on Saturday, May 18, at the Winter Center at Millersville University at 3 and 8 p.m. The Winter Center is located at 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The concert will include the Aram Khachaturian’s “Waltz” from the “Masquerade Suite,” Russell Peck’s “The Glory and the Grandeur” and Dimitri Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. Khachaturian is considered one of the leading Soviet composers and the most well-known Armenian composer of the 20th century. He was born in 1903 to poor Armenian parents in present-day Georgia and grew up with little formal music training until age 18 when he enrolled in the Gnessin Musical Institute. He studied cello, composition and biology, and he was awarded many prestigious awards and privileges for his compositions, which predominantly exhibited folk Armenian flavors. Khachaturian was known as one of the “three titans of Soviet music,” along with Prokofiev and Shostakovich. His works span many genres, including concertos, symphonies, ballets and music for film, which can still be regularly heard today. The “Waltz” from the “Masquerade Suite” was written in 1941 for a play with the same name created by Russian poet and playwright Mikhail Lermontov. Despite the play having a tragic theme, the waltz is particularly spirited. Peck was a composer from Detroit, Mich., who was heavily influenced by the soul music being played in the city in the
