Students Help to Build Duck Habitat Boxes I n connection with the Envirothon, students of Jessica Williams at Centerville Elementary School (CES) helped assemble wood duck habitat boxes on April 1. Williams’ students had been studying backyard habitats, as well as the trees and other plants, birds, and mammals of Pennsylvania. “We have heard from a naturalist, Katie Kruza, from Lancaster County Parks,” Williams noted. “Students have had hands-on experience viewing and handling skulls and pelts of the mammals they were studying.” The duck habitat project came about as an extension of an effort at Williams’ church, Glossbrenner Church in Mount Joy. Under the direction of Glossbrenner member and retired Donegal School District teacher David Eichler, along with youth director Jess Rocky, youths at the church apply stain to already constructed bird habitat boxes as a service project for the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC). Eichler is a deputy waterways conservation officer with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC). Williams, herself a former student of Eichler’s, asked Eichler to lead a bird box project with her CES students (from left) Celia Heller, fourth grade; Airalia CES students. ark Mueller and his wife, Jackie, took a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and turned it into an opportunity to help others. Jackie was diagnosed with MS in 1998, and the couple sought to treat the disease as naturally as possible, without medication. They experimented with nutrition and exercise to see what worked and what didn’t, and their research led to MS FitEffect, a free, 10-week program for people with MS. The next session will run from Saturday, Sept. 6, through Saturday, Nov. 15, at Elizabethtown Fitness Club, 626 S. Market St. “Each participant selects a time with their trainer for their private one-hour weekly session,” Mark
A World of Wonder Awaits Inside the Bookmobile
BY JEFF FALK
It’s more than books on wheels. The Library System of Lancaster County’s (LSLC) bookmobile delivers knowledge, creativity, inspiration and joy. The bookmobile is kind of like a food truck serving up nourishment for the mind and soul. “Reading in general is very important,” said Audrey Lilley, the bookmobile’s driver, curator and full-time coordinator. “It’s important for kids to be reading. It’s important for them to

be able to pick up a book and see characters who look like them. Reading can be inspirational, and with retirees, it kind of comes full circle. I think retirees can find comfort in reading. For all people in between, it’s a way to relax and unwind.” W h e n n o t o n t h e g o to multiple locations all across Lancaster County, Lilley parks the bookmobile at LSLC’s main office at 1866 Colonial Village Lane, Suite 107, Lancaster. Pedaling Toward Confidence and Growth BY CATHY MOLITORIS
At LifeCycles, a simple bike ride is the start of something bigger. With every mile, young riders build confidence, courage and resilience, skills that carry far beyond the road ahead. The nonprofit, which offers free long-distance cycling experiences for boys and girls ages 12 to 18, just kicked off its 12th season of transforming lives, one ride at a time. Teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road,
Marietta, and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Both groups gather at 5:45 p.m. and finish up at 8 p.m. The season runs through mid-October. “There are separate girls’ teams and boys’ teams, and each team has multiple ride groups based on skill level and strength, so there’s a place for teens of any level of development, including beginners,” said Lee DeRemer, LifeCycles director. Each evening, participants experience a ride, mentoring, a hot meal and lots of encouraging coaching

Creativity Will Shine at Art Show BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“People love this show because there’s so much diversity,” said Marilyn Hobday, describing the spring Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. “There’s something for everyone’s pocketbook. We try to make sure we have enough diversity with prices that everybody can find something that they love. That’s important to us.” The show will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside at Root’s Country Market & Auction, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. It will feature 60 vendors, showcasing and selling a wide variety of arts and crafts. “ We have a guy who does these huge, hand-turned bowls. T hey ’re beautiful,” Hobday shared. “We have an artist who takes old metal pieces and makes some really cool sculptures out of them. We have a quilt maker. We have two people who do custom-made greeting cards. Everything in the show is juried, and it has to be handmade by the artists attending the show.” A committee chooses the artists who will participate in the show, with artists coming from across the state and from Maryland and New Jersey. Hobday personally scouts smaller shows throughout the region, talking to artists and encouraging them to join her shows. “We have amazing people on the committee who have been in business for a very long time - potters, jewelers, painters, sewing,” she said. “We’re not just a random group of people making decisions on things we don’t know about. We know what we’re looking for.” Hobday organizes a spring and
