Trucks Will Roll to Grant Wishes

When hundreds of trucks hit the road on Saturday, May 9, they’ll be working to grant wishes. The 37th annual Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck
Convoy will kick off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. Truck parking, driver check-in and on-site registration will take place from 6 to 10 a.m. A silent auction and basket giveaways will be featured from 8 a.m. to noon. A Family Fest will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. At 11 a.m., there will be a mandatory safety meeting for convoy drivers, before remarks and a Wish Angel Remembrance at noon. Great things happen when kids get outside. They can discover new skills, develop self-confidence, make new friends and, most of all, have fun.
Kids ages 10 to 15 are invited to the 31st annual Youth Field Day, organized by the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth. It will take place at the Milton Grove Sportsmen’s Club, 731 Milton Grove Road North, Elizabethtown, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.
Zion Lutheran Church, 85 E. Brandt Blvd., Landisville, will host the third Landisville Area Church Choir Festival on Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. The sanctuary doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Parking will be available in front of and behind the church, as well as in an overflow lot on Cooper Street.
The event will feature the choir from Zion Lutheran, led by John Landis; singers from Landisville
Mennonite Church, led by Douglas Bomberger; and Hempfield High School (HHS) Chamber Singers, directed by HHS choral director Alejandro Ramos.
Each group will perform two or three songs, and then all participants will collectively sing three pieces under the direction of guest conductor Ramos. The first number will be “Draw the Circle Wide,” a folk-style hymn written
“We encourage kids and their parents to come to our Youth Field Day if they want to experience a day of outdoor activities,” said Lynn Carruthers, a volunteer with the event. “The 10 stations they will get to experience for 35 minutes each may vary slightly year to year but are typically archery, canoeing, fishing, fly fishing, muzzle loading, trapping, 22 rifle, trap shooting, turkeys (and) wildlife education with the PA game commissioners and Raven Ridge Wildlife Rescue.”
The event is free to attend, no gear is needed and participants will all receive a free lunch. Parents are encouraged to accompany their child, but it’s not required.
While Youth Field Day is an opportunity for kids who don’t have a background in outdoor activities to experience the fun, it’s open to any youths in the age range, said Scott Deiter, who coordinates the canoeing.
“We can say that many kids that start at age 10 return each year for the next four or five years that they fall into the age range,”

Carruthers noted that she learned about the event’s history from a magazine article written in 1999 by Charlie Youtz.
The Ice Cream Bar at Decades opened its second season with a celebration on April 17. The Ice Cream Bar features a variety of ice cream flavors, alcoholic and nonalcoholic milkshakes, frozen treats, savory snacks, Decades cocktail pouches, beer on tap, new iced coffee, Decades margaritas, Shifty canned cocktails, and more. Decades will feature a variety of house-made ice cream flavors this season, including the Coindexter Crunch, which was inspired by Cap’n Crunch cereal, and a new Chillin’ With My Peeps flavor swirled with Cadbury egg pieces and Peeps candy. The Ice Cream Bar will be open on Fridays from 4 to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 9 p.m. Later in May, the Ice Cream Bar will switch from Friday, Saturday, and Sunday hours to Wednesday through Sunday hours. The full inside Decades experience - retro arcade games, bowling, full restaurant, and bar - will continue to be open on Wednesdays through Sundays. Outdoor dining options will be available.

“He wrote, ‘The number of youth involved in outdoor activities has been declining for years,’” Carruthers said. “In 1991, the late Bob McWilliams, information and education specialist with the PA Game Commission, had an idea.”
He and 25 other sportsmen held a meeting in the northwest regional office of the Game Commission and organized a free, one-day interactive event for youths. Since then, the concept spread across the state. In October of 1995, a group of 70 people formed what is now the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth, and the first local Youth Field Day was held in June 1996. Last year, there were 22 Youth Field Days held over the summer throughout Pennsylvania.
Carruthers emphasized that the day would not be possible without the support of volunteers.
“These are people that love the outdoors and love to teach the kids how to love it too,” she said. “Many come from the sportsmen’s clubs in Lancaster County and have been volunteering since the Lancaster County Field Day was first held in 1996.”
Each year, the group also recruits new volunteers, including a participant now in his 20s who went through the program as
a kid and now helps with either fly fishing or freshwater fishing. Certified instructors with the Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg run the canoeing station, and game wardens operate the PA Game Commission station.
“And they have stories of kids who went through Youth Day and then became game wardens,” Carruthers remarked. “Many of the volunteers have stories from the day, stories of seeing a young child come alive with excitement after they did something at the station. The volunteer shares with others, and we all keep saying, ‘This is why we can keep coming every year and give it our all, just to see young ones show excitement for an outdoor sport.’”
She added that the Lancaster County Youth Field Day is always held on the first Saturday of June, but the host sportsmen’s club is not announced until March of each year. The event is hosted by one of the four clubs that have a large pond.
The Youth Field Day is funded by donations from
area sportsmen’s clubs, outdoor sporting goods stores and some local food companies.
“Also, a donation is given for free printing of pamphlets from a local printing company,” Carruthers said. “The companies and sportsmen’s clubs are not asking for recognition. They are doing it to help keep this goal alive, to let kids experience and love the outdoors.”
Along with a free lunch, kids will receive a goodie bag at the end of the day. Youth Field Day will be held rain or shine, so participants should dress for the weather. Early registration is encouraged. Registration will close on Friday, June 5. If people register early but then cannot attend, they should update their registration by removing their name to make room for other participants.

Bird Club Slates Meeting
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens. Aspen Simone and Hannah Michelle Brower, founders of Philly Pigeon Tours, will present “The Past, Present, and Future of Our Relationship With Pigeons.”
The speakers will cover 10,000 years of pigeon history, starting with the birds’ domestication. They will explore humans’ mutually beneficial relationship with and positive feelings toward pigeons, as well as the relationship’s turning sour in the 1960s. They will talk about how the future might look different and why they think empathy
for pigeons is crucial at this time.
Simone has more than a decade of professional experience in civic technology, working for agencies and companies focused on regional planning, zoning, and sustainability, as well as on federal benefits and environmental cleanup programs. Simone holds a bachelor’s

There is a new route for the convoy this year, said Lori Dietrich, director of development for MakeA-Wish in Lancaster. The route will run west from Manheim on Route 283 to Tollhouse Road before looping back on Route 283 East and ending at the Esbenshade Road exit. The convoy will no longer travel through Mount Joy. Good spots to view the convoy will include the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction and LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road.
Dietrich said the convoy will include close to 400 trucks. Drivers can still register online at www.wish convoy.org or in person on the day of the event.
People of all ages are invited to come out for the Family Fest. Activities will include games, vendors, DJ entertainment, food trucks, costumed characters, the famous convoy clowns, a silent auction, a basket raffle, hundreds of trucks to see, and the kickoff of the truck convoy.
“The Family Fest is open to the public,” Dietrich remarked, “with free parking, free admission and free activities for families.” While past events charged for game tickets, each child will receive free game tickets this year, she added. A variety of food trucks will be on-site for the Family Fest, including Castenedas Food Truck, Drifters, Mocha Motion Coffee, Piper Belles BBQ and Walk-O Taco.
The festivities have a carnival-like atmosphere, enhanced by the Make-AWish clowns.
“The clowns help to spread joy to attendees and serve a
very important role as donation collectors at the event and along the route,” Dietrich said. “Over the years, the convoy clowns have helped to raise thousands of dollars to grant wishes.”
Proceeds from the day will support granting life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses through Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.
“Currently, there are 73 kids waiting on their wish to be granted in our Susquehanna Valley region, 29 of which reside right here in Lancaster County,” Dietrich shared. “Make-A-Wish relies 100% on the generosity of the community to be able to grant the wishes of critically ill children. Participating has a direct impact on local families.”
With headquarters in Phoenix, Ariz., MakeA-Wish is one of the world’s leading children’s wish-granting organizations. It serves children in all 50 states, as well as in more than 50 countries around the world. Since 1986, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 8,600 wishes.
Last year, the convoy raised $461,386 for MakeA-Wish. This year, organizers have set a goal of raising $525,000.
“The truck convoy is a legacy event for our chapter, which is honoring its 40th anniversary in 2026,” Dietrich said. “The truck convoy was the first fundraising event organized 37 years ago, and it is amazing that the event lives on today. It plays an extremely important role in the chap ter’s ability to grant local wishes. We are able to keep this event going due to the generous spirit of the local community.”

Fundraiser to Feature Ethiopian Meal
Siloam Ethiopia will hold a fundraising meal on Saturday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ethiopian Evangelical Church, 175 Church St., Landisville. The meal will consist of traditional Ethiopian food, including vegetarian options, made by Siloam Ethiopia’s volunteers. Dine-in and takeout options will be available. Proceeds will go to two projects in Ethiopia.

One project is a medical clinic that provides care, including medicine, free of charge to the community. Since opening in 2018, the clinic, which is available from Mondays to Saturdays, has provided medical services to more than 32,000 individuals in need. All donations to the ministry go directly to helping those in need.
In addition, Siloam Ethiopia is raising funds to purchase a house for several homeless girls the organization is currently raising in two rented houses. Finding clean, safe housing has been difficult, but during a recent mission trip, organizers were able to find a suitable home. The owner of the building has given Siloam Ethiopia until the end of May to pay the full cost of the house.

Lancaster Bible College (LBC) will honor nearly 400 graduates throughout three commencement ceremonies on Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, in Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster.
About 145 on-campus undergraduate students will be recognized at a 10 a.m. ceremony on May 8. At 10 a.m. on May 9, LBC will honor nearly 100 online undergraduate students. Later that day at 2 p.m., 135 students in master’s and doctoral programs will celebrate their graduation.
Jon Elswick, a 2018 doctoral graduate of the college, will serve as the commencement speaker for all three ceremonies. Elswick is the lead and founding pastor of Crossway Church in South Florida, which he planted 16 years ago. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity International University, a Master of Divinity from Reformed Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate of Ministry from LBC. Elswick is passionate about helping people engage God’s Word and grow as followers of Jesus. He also serves on the board of Church United in Broward County, Fla., a movement of churches seeking the flourishing of their community. Jon has been married to his wife, Melissa, for 23 years, and they have two sons, Ethan and Joshua.

Church to Host Musician
Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, will host Sandra McCracken in concert on Saturday, May 9, at 7 p.m.
McCracken is a Grammy-nominated, Dove Award-winning singer-songwriter, author, record producer, and creative leader based in Nashville. With a career spanning 25 years and 18 solo albums, she has become a prominent voice in modern hymnody and gospel-roots music. She is known for blending Americana, folk, and sacred traditions.
Many of McCracken’s songs, such as “We Will Feast in the House of Zion” and “Thy Mercy My God,” have been used in worship services around the world. Fellow artists featured on her recordings have included Ellie Holcomb, The FAITHFUL Project, All Sons & Daughters, and Keith and Kristyn Getty. McCracken’s music has also appeared on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Lancaster Kennel Club will hold the 82nd annual Red Rose Classic All Breed Dog Show and Rally Trials on Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9, at the Lebanon Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon. More than 500 dogs will compete in the family-friendly event. Vendors and concessions will also be available.

Food Pantry Updates Posted
Impact Ministries to the Nations has posted the hours for its food pantry at Wakefield Vineyard Church, 2292 Robert Fulton Highway, Peach Bottom. The pantry is open on the third Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon and on the fourth Friday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. The pantry provides free food boxes to individuals and families in Peach Bottom, Wakefield, and the surrounding communities.
In addition, the organization will open a new food pantry at 135 Oakridge Drive, Mountville. The grand opening will take place on Saturday, May 9, at noon.
