Mastering the ice n April 17, Red Rose Figure Skating Club began a spring session of classes in partnership with Learn To Skate USA. Classes will be held at Regency Ice Rink, 2155 Ambassador Drive, Lancaster, on Mondays until May 22, and summer sessions will be held in June and July. The club seeks to provide both adults and children age 3 and up with an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of ice skating. Each session follows a curriculum provided by Learn to Skate USA, which offers a foundation for those looking to pursue figure skating and ice hockey. After working on basic techniques, coaches will help skaters to perfect more advanced skills such as one-foot glides, hops and turns. “At the end of the day, skating is skating. Even if you’re a 6-year-old wanting to become a hockey player, you have to learn to skate first,” said Cara Scudner of the Conestoga Valley area, a competitive skater at Red Rose.

Scudner and other seasoned skaters at Red Rose assist with the Learn to Skate program by serving as coaches during the classes. Although the program has been offered by the club in the past, this will be the first session that it has offered in over 10 years. Scudner said that she hopes the group classes offer a more

On March 24, East Petersburg Elementary School held its annual Entrepreneur Fair. During the event, students set up business stands and operated them with the help of their parents. A panel of guest judges interviewed the students at each stand about their products and what the preparation for the fair entailed, and the panel awarded prizes at the end of the event. A month before the fair, the school held a meeting with the participating

students to address the details of the event and offer guidelines for the competition. Certain students and their families began preparing for the fair by creating items such as keychains and jewelry to ensure that they would have enough inventory to sell. During the meeting, students were visited by 12-year-old Bennett Dufrene of Landisville, who started his own business selling ice cream when he was 9 years old. Dufrene, better known as Mr. Ice Cream Kid, shared his insight on operating a business with the students to help them to prepare for the fair. See School fair pg 3

The term artificial intelligence (AI) draws mixed reactions. Thanks to decades of science fiction films, television shows and books, many people hear the term AI and immediately begin to picture a bleak dystopia where robots have taken over the world, accompanied by the worry that Arnold Schwarzenegger won’t be able to save the day. Charlie Reisinger, chief information officer for Penn Manor School District, shared his perspective on the technological phenomenon to clear up some common misconceptions about AI.

“AI is just another chapter in humanity’s quest to create machines that mirror other humans,” Reisinger said. “There are age-old stories of human beings trying to create life, like the tales of Frankenstein’s monster and the Greek myth of Pygmalion. At its core, it’s trying to breathe some sort of life into technology, but AI is really just math and computer code, nothing more.” The research of AI has been occurring for decades. The fundamental idea was to create software that could emulate human decision making, but many research efforts were not fruitful enough and were See Artificial Intelligence pg 5

accessible alternative to private lessons for aspiring skaters of any age. “It’s never too late to start ice skating,” Scudner said. “There’s nothing like it. Skating combines artistry with athleticism. You feel like you’re flying when you’re gliding on the ice.” In March, Scudner and fellow Red Rose skaters Brian Padgett of Lancaster and Ken Nguyen of Hershey competed in the Eastern and Midwestern Sectional Championships. At the championship competition in Kissimmee, Fla., Nguyen won first place and Padgett won second place. Both Nguyen and Padgett qualified to compete at the silver level in the national championship in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nguyen started skating as an adult through Learn to Skate USA and has regularly helped with the program and competed for the last 12 years. “Being an adult skater, I had more of a fondness to help other adults starting out and to nurture that enjoyment of the sport,” Nguyen said.
