Families will dig Fossil Safari BY GEORGE DEIBEL

A night to celebrate the arts

A

rt, music, and reading will share the spotlight on a special evening. L andisville Middle School (LMS), 340 Mumma Drive, will host Night of the Arts on Thursday, April 10, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. This year, organizers extended the hours of the annual event. “We wanted to have a longer time period so the kids who are in sports or have other obligations can attend,” LMS art teacher Amy Smith said. “We wanted to make it easier for families.” Night of the Arts will feature artwork made by LMS seventhand eighth-graders. “Part of the

whole artistic process has to do with exhibition of their learning and work,” said Smith. “And for them to be proud of what they’ve done and show people. It gives them another outlet. ... I’ve been teaching at Hempfield since 1999, and I’ve seen kids gain confidence through this exhibition, and they are able to be more expressive in the art room.” Some members of the school’s modern band will perform. One of the highlights of the evening will be a visit from a special guest, award-winning author Amy Sarig King, who resides in Lititz. King will speak in the LMS gym from 6 to 6:45 p.m. According to her bio on her

website, King has been called “One of the best Y.A. (Young Adult) writers working today” by the New York Times Book Review and has won the Michael L. Printz Award twice, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the Amelia Walden Award, the Carolyn Field Award, the Margaret A. Edwards Award, and the ALAN (Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of National Council of Teachers of English) Award for her lasting contribution to young adult literature. Every Hempfield middle school student will receive a copy of King’s book “Me and Marvin Gardens” through the One Book, One School initiative, thanks to a See Night of the Arts pg 2

The Fossil Safari will feature a variety of fossils collected by Sue and her husband, Chuck, from Pennsylvania, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Florida, along with educational displays, including a hands-on activity where kids use small shovels to scoop up dirt and gravel and search for shark teeth. Zion Lutheran hoping magician makes community appear BY GEORGE DEIBEL

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church pastor Tim Seitz-Brown will welcome an old friend to town. Seitz-Brown met the magician James Warren at a Theology and Peace Conference in Baltimore in 2011. “As part of the evening entertainment, James dazzled us with his magic tricks,” SeitzBrown said. “He made us laugh and ask over and over again,

‘How did you do that?’ He made me forget about the snacks table and drew me in with his entertainment.” On Sunday, April 13, Warren will perform his magic act at Zion Lutheran, which is located at 85 Brandt Blvd., Landisville. The show will run from 4 to 5 p.m., followed by a meal at 5:30. Everyone is invited. The church will provide fried chicken and beverages, and congregants will bring side dishes and desserts.

Families can channel their inner archaeologist at a Fossil Safari sponsored by the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC). The educational event will be held Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. There is no fee for admission. Preregistration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information or to register, email LCFMC@LancasterCountyFossil AndMineralClub.org. LCFMC, which was founded by Catherine and Chris Haefner, held its first Fossil Safari on a Thursday night last November and will hold this one on a weekend due to popular demand. “It was well received,” said Sue Garrett, who is one of the event organizers. “The kids absolutely loved it.”
