Church Souper Bowl Benefits Food Banks BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Thanks to its “souper” efforts, the congregation at Salem United Church of Christ in Rohrerstown has made an impact on food banks throughout the county. The church held its annual Souper Bowl event throughout the month of January. Congregants were encouraged to donate cans of soup or

money to purchase soup, said Mark Wanner, who helped with the event. “I took the monetary donations from our congregation and worked with the Centerville Giant Food Store to purchase Campbell’s soup at a discounted price,” he explained. “The Giant Food Store is always very willing to work with us and to help our soup drive.” See Souper Bowl pg 6

Community Event Will Celebrate Small Businesses s successful local businesswomen, Megan Kalbach and Jacque Hess felt a pull to help others. The friends decided to use their experience and connections to create the Mountville Community Event. To be held Saturday, March 13, from noon to 6 p.m., the event will feature live music, food trucks, small businesses, crafters and more in Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville. “ We both have had very successful careers in sales and marketing before the pandemic,” Kalbach said. “We felt a calling after helping with the Mountville Carnival’s food truck event last year. We felt God was calling us to help support local businesses. We saw small businesses struggling to get set up online this past year, struggling with figuring out how to do curbside pickup or to-go options. We had the knowledge, and so we just sat down and created MJ Small Business Squad.” This is the first event MJ Small

“We just wanted to offer a chance for families to come out and have fun while supporting businesses in their community.” The Easter Bunny will be there, along with Mountville Fire Company, which will assist with parking by donation and hold a giveaway drawing. Sow and Sew mobile boutique will be on site, as will BTS Property Services, which will be bringing equipment for kids to explore. Additional participants include the Girl Scouts, Mountville

Lions Club, Mountville Swim Team, Hempfield Education Association and Reality Church. “We’re doing this to support small businesses and give them the opportunity they need to get out there and work,” Kalbach explained. “We’re also inviting any nonprofits to come and provide a kids’ activity.” Kalbach and Hess will be making a donation to the Mountville Fire Company for its assistance and to the park as a thank you for hosting the event. “We just wanted to offer a chance for families to come out and have fun while supporting businesses in their community,” Kalbach noted, adding that she and Hess hope to do more events like this one. “We’re doing this because we have a heart for small businesses. … We know this year has been hard for everyone, and we just want to help make it a little better.” For more information on the Mountville Community Event or to sign up as a vendor, readers may visit https://mjsquad.com and select “Community Event.”

Dayspring events manager Lisa Becker said she believes the pair will present an important perspective. “We are beginning to see the stirrings of an awakening, and we feel the Lord has presented us with this opportunity to breathe into that,” she shared, noting that as author of “If You Can Keep It,” which explores the roots of the republic, Metaxas has an understanding of the founding of America on biblical values. Becker said she is looking forward to hearing him interview Cahn, based on the historical perspective Cahn has presented. Becker said the interview format was a decision inspired by the Holy Spirit. Dayspring students and supporters of Dayspring’s mission, prays yearly for inspiration for speakers. “We set our hearts for the Lord and seek Him,” said Becker. “The combination of these two speakers came from one of our team members, and it was really divine inspiration.” Myers confirmed the importance of prayer to the foundation of the school and the nation. “Over the centuries many prayers have been prayed and many declarations decreed regarding the Gospel purpose for America,” he said. “ We are going to renew that and make sure the rising generations understand our heritage, so we can continue in what we believe (is) God’s plan for America.” In addition to the interview, the presentation will include performances by the Dayspring chorus and a presentation by a select student orator. Designer Purse Fundraiser To Benefit Help The Fight breast cancer in 1989 at the age of 49. In March of 2009, her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Soon after, the charity began. “Within weeks of our sister’s diagnosis, the assistant at our office was also diagnosed,” Charles recalled. “My husband, Dave, and I wanted to be able to help. We held a bake sale to help with their expenses. We raised over $9,000.” She said that in addition to the bake sale, the money was raised through sponsors and a sale of T-shirts. In 2020, Help The Fight assisted about 200 individu-

Imagine having the opportunity to win a designer purse every day during the month of April. That is exactly the premise of a new fundraiser being planned by Help The Fight, a nonprofit organization that supports individuals living with breast cancer. As part of the designer purse giveaway, community members are invited to purchase a ticket, which will be entered into a random drawing. There will be 30 winners in the 30 days of April. Ticket holders must be 18 years of age or older to participate. “Each day we will pull a name,” explained Lynda Charles, president and founder of the organization. “The name that we pull will get the designer bag of that day. Hopefully, people will buy more than one ticket.” The giveaway replaces the organization’s previous fundraiser, a designer bag bingo. “Last year, just prior to COVID, we actually had our very first designer bag bingo at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster,” Charles reported. “People loved it but with COVID our fundraising

events have altered, just as everyone else’s has. We decided to do this for the month of April.” Currently, the organization has about 20 bags that it purchased brand new by designers Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Coach and others. Sponsors are needed to fund the cost of the remaining bags. “We have a lot of styles and colors,” Charles pointed out. “With our choices, we are trying to appeal to as many people as possible.” Winners of the bags will be contacted by phone, and their names will be announced on the Help The Fight website and Facebook page. All proceeds will benefit the charity, which provides breast cancer patients with funds to buy groceries, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. It also provides funds for cancer screenings. “Wherever the need is of the patient is what we help with,” Charles said. “We have filled oil tanks and put tires on a vehicle for a one-vehicle family. We have paid electric bills and bought Christmas presents by giving a family a Walmart gift card.” Charles lost her mother to

awarded 13 teacher grants totaling nearly $25,000 for a wide array of innovative projects submitted by 21 teachers from throughout the Hempfield School District. These grants, combined with the more than $40,000 awarded to teachers at the start of the school year, will benefit students in all seven of the district’s elementary schools, its two middle schools and its high school. At Centerville Elementary School, a $2,087 grant was given for teachers Julie Engle and Amy Saporetti to provide beginning readers with decodable texts (books). Decodable texts aim to help readers build basic phonics skills and improve reading fluency. At Farmdale Elementary School, teacher Lisa Sempsey received $2,910 to purchase drums to enable students to explore pulse/beat, rhythm, layering ostinatos, music composition, improvisation, ensemble work, and world music. The team of Amy Grube, Cheryl Hudson-Kasun, and Christina Hoover at Landisville Primary Center received $3,000 to purchase books for all students and staff members so that everyone can participate in the school’s One School/One Book program. Hoover was also granted $1,260 to continue access to the Headsprout app for first-grade readers in the school. This resource is used to help children

At Rohrerstown Elementary School, fifth-grade teachers Kathryn Kapchinske, Kristi Miller, and Aubree Lockard received $266 to purchase magazines to help their students better understand the 2020 election as well as $3,000 to support their project “Robotics, Circuits, STEM, OH MY!” At Centerville Middle School and Landisville Middle School, $500 went to teachers Nancy Schnelli and Patrice Hazlett to arrange a virtual visit with graphic novelist Matt Phelan for their students. English language arts teacher Melissa Kreider at Landisville Middle School received $1,400 to purchase books to help students better understand the events of the Holocaust through literature. Hempfield High School counselors Stefanie Scarborough and Kimberly Romero were granted $1,750 to create a relaxion lounge to help students catch their breath. Also at Hempfield High School, the Hempfield Foundation awarded business teacher Chris Hanusa with the first Tom A. Albright Memorial Teacher Grant for Career Development. Albright was a 1996 graduate of Hempfield High School, and the grant was made possible through a gift from fellow 1996 alumnus Daniel Ritzman. Hanusa will use the grant of $1,354 to bring the BizInnovator cur-

Sportsmen’s Association Plans Programs The Mount Joy Sportsmen’s Association, 85 Range Road, Mount Joy, will offer its spring air gun program. The program stresses safety and is meant to teach marksmanship skills in a friendly, relaxed environment. The air gun program began on March 6 and will continue through early summer. It is open to the public. Adults and juniors will alternate Saturdays, with both groups meeting at 9 a.m. Participants may join at any time. The air gun programs are conducted with .177 caliber pellets. Club rifles are available for those who do not own a match quality

air rifle. Rifles must have adjustable iron sights only, and no scopes or red-dots will be allowed. The next session of the junior program for children and youths age 9 and older will occur on Saturday, March 20. Parents are encouraged to stay and help. There is a one-time fee for ammunition and targets. The adult program using air rifles and air pistols will be offered beginning on Saturday, March 13. There is a one-time fee for targets only. Three days earlier, Hempfield’s 19-10 run in the fourth quarter gave the team a 58-52 victory over Lancaster Catholic in the L-L League semifinal game at Landisville. Wanner emphasized that Salem United Church of Christ is not a large church, but that a small group can make a big impact. “Before COVID, we were getting about 50 people on any Sunday,” he said. “We have very good people in our congregation, and when you ask for something, they come through.” In addition to the Souper Bowl, the church conducts monthly mission outreach projects to support a variety of local organizations. The first year the church held its Souper Bowl, in 2010, the congregation collected 224 cans of soup. To see that number increase dramatically over the years is not a surprise to Wanner, who added, “Our congregation always rises to the occasion.”

This year, the church donated 2,314 cans, an alltime high for the collection. “Of that, we were able to purchase (a total of) 88 cases of chicken noodle soup, tomato soup, cream of mushroom soup and cream of chicken soup,” Wanner noted. Soup was donated to the Hempfield Area Food Pantry at Zion Lutheran Church in Salunga, the Columbia Food Bank at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Columbia and the Lancaster County Food Hub in Lancaster. “We always have a grocery shopping cart at the church, and we collect food yearround and then somebody takes it to the food pantry at Zion Lutheran Church, but this time, since we had so much soup, they were not able to take all of it,” Wanner stated. “ We had connections at the other food banks, and they were very appreciative of the donation. Especially at this time of year, when it’s cold, people love soup.”

Rohrer’s Concrete needs a Plant Assistant to load concrete silos and empty reclamation plant bins. Use dump truck and/or loader to retrieve materials and ﬁll or empty bins, assist with plant maintenance, and take care of precast block production. Successful candidates must have a valid driver’s license; safe driving record; stable employment history, be able to lift up to 75 lbs, and work outside in all kinds of weather, heat, cold, dusty & muddy places, with extremely loud equipment, and be available for regular overtime. Experience with heavy equipment, concrete operations, and/or any type of plant maintenance is preferred, but not required. We offer competitive pay and beneﬁts including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, Paid Time Off (PTO), 401(k) with match, and long-term care. Company sponsored continuing education & training as well as tuition reimbursement is available.
