All of those concepts and their implications are related and interrelated. All of those concepts and implications are relevant and intersect at the Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon.

“I would add health to that list,” said Cheryl Hiester, who’s been the executive director of the Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon for 18 years. “There’s a correlation between literacy and health. The ability to read and write English and fully participate in today’s world can impact every single aspect of an adult’s life. You can’t be fully engaged in your child’s education if you don’t have those skills. Those are significant barriers.”

The Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, which is located at 407 Lafayette St., Lancaster, is dedicated to enriching lives and helping individuals reach their full potential through adult education. Not only does the local nonprofit promote the concept of lifelong learning, it embraces it.

Kathryn Davis is a staunch believer in serving her community and country.
The 2024 Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School graduate was crowned Miss Lancaster County last fall, earning the right to compete in the Miss Pennsylvania pageant in mid-June at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York.
“I’m super excited to represent my hometown,” said Davis. The victor of the Miss Pennsylvania contest will advance to the Miss America pageant. “It’s something I’ve dreamt about since I was a little girl,” said Davis. “Right now, my focus is on Miss Pennsylvania. Whatever God has in store will happen.”
She was enthroned as Miss Lancaster County Sept. 24 at Ephrata High School. “It was so unexpected,” Davis said.
The competition was composed of a 10-minute interview, which was 30% of the total score; an onstage question about the contestants’ community service initiative (10%); talent demonstration (20%); a fitness competition in athleticwear (20%); and an evening gown walk (20%).
Three titles - Miss Southern Lancaster County, Miss Heart of Lancaster, and Miss Red Rose City - were announced prior to Miss Lancaster County. Davis thought she had a better chance to win one of those crowns, but she tried to remain optimistic before the announcement of the

This spring, Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) invites people in the community to look up, listen closely and get to know the birds along the Susquehanna River a little better. Three Introduction to Birding workshops will be offered on Saturday, March 28, each designed for a specific age group.
A 10 a.m. session will be geared toward families. An 11 a.m. session will address adults, and a 12:30 p.m. session will introduce teenagers to birding. While each session is tailored for its specific audience, all share the same goal: helping participants connect with their feathered neighbors and the river landscape they call home.
Sarah Gotwols, a Lancaster County native who has spent countless hours on land and water observing birds and other wildlife in the region, will lead the program.
“We’ve worked with Sarah before on birding walks and lectures, but this is the first time we’ve offered this workshop series,” said Sonya Vayansky, program manager for

SNHA. “Sarah has a real talent for welcoming beginners into birding, and we’re always looking for engaging ways to help people explore and enjoy the parks, trails and outdoor spaces within the Susquehanna National Heritage Area. This felt like a natural fit.”
Participants can expect a friendly, low-pressure introduction to birding at the workshops, Vayansky said.
“They’ll learn practical skills, like how to use binoculars, field guides and bird-identification apps, along with tips for spotting and identifying birds in the field,” she remarked. “It’s also a great chance to meet others who share an interest in nature and to learn from an experienced birder who knows our region well.”
The workshop for families will introduce the basics of birdwatching in a hands-on, kid-friendly way, designed to keep young birders curious and engaged outdoors. The adult session will cover core birding skills, as participants are introduced to bird identification basics, while the program for teens will encourage youths to pursue a new outdoor hobby as

they learn beginning identification skills and how to record their sightings.
Gotwols leads birdwatching walks throughout the year with the Lancaster Conservancy and the Lancaster County Bird Club.
She has also been a presenter with SNHA aboard the historic tour boat Chief Uncas and at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage.
Holding a program like the birding workshop is important to SNHA, Vayansky said.
“Connecting people to the natural and cultural resources of York and Lancaster counties is central to our mission,” she said.
“When people spend time outdoors and build a personal connection to these
places, they’re more likely to care about protecting them. Workshops like this give people the confidence and tools to experience our parks and trails in a new way - and to see them as places worth preserving.” There is a per-person charge for the workshops. Children and teens under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Adults accompanying teens to the teen workshop do not need to register or pay for a ticket. Participants are asked to bring their own binoculars, if possible, although some will be available to borrow during the program. To register for a workshop, visit https://susqnha.org/ events.

The United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) will hold its annual gala on Thursday, April 30, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster.
The 2025 gala raised nearly $650,000, which provided crucial support for the organization’s mission of providing personal care and support services to older adults and people with disabilities.
John Kruk, a three-time MLB All-Star and former Philadelphia Phillies first baseman and outfielder, will be the keynote speaker.
As part of an exclusive Extra Innings After-Party, Kruk will participate in a fireside chat-style interview conducted by Eagles insider Dave Spadaro following the gala. The extra event will include photo opportunities with Kruk, an open bar, and light refreshments.
UDSF will sell giveaway drawing tickets for the Extra Innings After-Party

big prize. “I was definitely nervous, but I had a little bit of hope,” she said.
Casey Allyn, a radio personality and friend of Davis’, was bestowed the honor of divulging the winner. “When Casey called my name, it was utter shock and happiness that I get to serve my community,” said Davis.
Davis has been attending other local competitions to show support for her sister queens and will visit blood drives, which goes along with her community service initiative PhlebotomyFam. For more information about local scholarship competitions and PhlebotomyFam, go to https://MissKathryn Davis.com.
She is grateful for the support from her coaches, Juven Nava and Annika Wooton of Crown the Nation, and her mother, Jozlyn Grodski.
Davis, who previously served as Miss Greater Reading’s Teen 2025 and
Miss Lancaster County’s Teen 2024, is a freshman at Shippensburg University, where she is a member of the ROTC program and plans to major in history. Davis’ goal is to graduate from Shippensburg as a second lieutenant in the Army.
Her father, Timothy Davis, served in the Marines and is currently a member of the Air National Guard. The younger Davis had long mulled joining the armed forces but only recently decided to commit. “I never thought I was strong enough to do it,” she said.
“I finally got the guts to do it. It’s important to me to serve my country, not only as a titleholder but also serving in the Army. My family always emphasized service. We always give what we don’t need to people who need it. As a Christian, it’s what I am called to do, and I want to be the best version of myself I can be.”

The Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, which works closely with Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13, provides instruction in basic education skills like reading, writing, math, social studies and science and prepares students to acquire high school equivalency certifications. The Literacy Council also offers a digital literacy program to help novices navigate the technology world and an international health care professionals’ program, which helps immigrant professionals like doctors and nurses obtain the skills and licenses required to practice medicine here.
The Literacy Council does not provide job training, but the organization does provide educational support for individuals preparing for job training and higher forms of education.
“There are a lot of people in the community who don’t have their high school diplomas,” said Hiester, a resident of Mount Joy. “The career awareness gives people an opportunity to learn about the opportunities available to them. Some employers require high school credentials to hire individuals. If you want to go on to higher education, you need that credential. Others may want to show their children the importance of education. Most people don’t drop out of school on purpose.”
The Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon is currently serving about 500 individuals in its service area, but there are an estimated 120,000 residents who could benefit from the organization’s programs. Participants must be age 18 or older and live in either of the two counties, and they can’t be enrolled in school.
“They are people who want to improve their lives
Hiester said that there are currently 55,987 working-age adults living in Lancaster County who do not possess a high school diploma. About 22% of Lancaster County’s 380,144 adult residents or 83,631 individuals are functioning at or below Level 1 literacy.
Hiester also said that, on the average, 100 hours of adult education corresponds to about $9,621 a year in employee income.
“Some of our students are living in homes with a large amount of stress,” said Hiester. “Families living in poverty might move frequently. There may be behavioral health issues that make it difficult to complete educations. There are a lot of people living in Lancaster County who came here as refugees and didn’t learn English. Every person has their own journey and experiences. We’re here to help them reach their goals.”
The Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, which was founded in 1985, employs 20 workers, some of whom are teachers and tutors. The organization also benefits from the service of volunteer instructors.
The Literacy Council is funded through state and federal resources provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, grants from local foundations, resources from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, fundraising events and the efforts of the United Way of Lebanon County.
“One of our big fears is that the federal funding is at risk,” said Hiester. “That funding is the backbone of adult literacy and education. I want people to feel inspired to help. I want people to advocate for people struggling with these skills.”

A Lancaster County farmer has been recognized in the 2025 Pennsylvania Soybean Yield Contest, an annual competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Soybean Board that highlights innovation and continuous improvement across the state’s soybean industry. The contest recognizes the top growers in each of five production regions in Pennsylvania, and A. Dale Herr of Lancaster County won in the southcentral region with a yield of 100.49 bushels per acre.
Timely mid- and late-sum-
mer rains, soil water-holding capacity, and late April planting dates were key factors influencing results in the 2025 contest. Thirty-two farms competed this year, and only two farms surpassed the 100-bushelper-acre level, one of which was Herr’s farm. Herr and the other regional winners will receive an educational trip for one to the Commodity Classic, an annual joint convention of the American Soybean Association, National Corn Growers Association, National Association of Wheat Grow-
ers, and the National Grain Sorghum Producers, which will be held in San Antonio, Texas.
The contest was introduced by the Pennsylvania Soybean Board to showcase crop management practices of some of the top soybean producers in the state and to encourage the exchange of ideas that drive continuous improvement and on-farm innovation. A summary of the crop production practices from recent contest entrants is available from Penn State Extension educators and at www.pasoybean.org.

Donations of frames, mats, art books, easels, and drawing tables are being accepted during those times prior to the start of the sale. Herr noted that items should be clean and in good working order.

I host live “Moving On: Downsizing to Right-Sizing” seminars for seniors, and most recent attendees said they learned about the event through my ad in the Merchandiser. It outperformed all my other advertising efforts—postcards, social media, and other newspapers—proving how effective local print advertising can be in reaching my target audience.
