Bring On The Bling! he creator of the over-the-top gowns on TLC’s “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding” will be the guest speaker at the next monthly meeting of the Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN). Couture designer Sondra Celli will join the group via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22. Members of the public are invited to attend and may email lancastersews@gmail.com for details. Celli started out in children’s wear after graduating from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and working in fashion houses around the globe. The clothing was heavily embellished with ribbons, beads, and miniature toys such as racecars, checkers, and tiny dolls and was sold at Saks, Neiman Marcus, and other department stores across the country. “It was a colorful, textural, whimsical, and three-dimensional line,” Celli said. “My collection stood out,

and that’s how the Gypsies found me. They tracked me down, and I’ve been designing for them ever since, and that was over 40 years ago.” Celli opened the Sondra Celli Company in Waltham, Mass., in 1981 and specialized in what she calls “uncommon crystal couture.” She does all the patternwork herself and cuts all the pieces for every design. Staff members sew the garments together before other workers, called “blingettes,” add the surface embellishments. “The stones are put on one-byone by hand,” Celli explained. “It’s a labor-intensive job, but the results are outstanding, eyecatching designs. As I like to say, ‘It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling.’” Celli published a book with Atglen-based Schiffer Publishing in 2019. “BLING! The Uncommon Crystal Couture World of Sondra Celli” includes insight into her career as well as directions for several embellishment projects.

Kevin Greene’s relatives are spread throughout two countries. He was born in British Columbia, then his family moved to Wilmington, Del., when he was 5. Kevin’s mother’s family lives in Manitoba, and his father’s sister lives near Niagara Falls. Kevin and his wife, Alisha, moved to Ephrata five years ago. Children residing in Hempfield School District who will be 5 years old prior to Wednesday, Sept. 1, are eligible to begin kindergarten in the fall of 2021. Parents and guardians who plan for their children to attend school this fall are asked to complete the online registration process by Monday, Feb. 22. When Anne Marie McAlester became executive director of Hope Within Ministries in October 2019, she started thinking about changing the sign outside the Elizabethtown organization. “I felt it didn’t communicate everything we are about,” she said. So last fall, she applied for a community awareness grant through Hershey Medical Center and received funding for a new sign. The sign, at 4748 East Harrisburg Pike, now reads “Hope Within Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center.” “We are a free primary medical care clinic, and we’ve been offering

psychiatrist who comes in twice a month. “We use a battalion of volunteer medical providers who work full time somewhere else but volunteer here a few hours a month,” McAlester noted. “We use graduate students under the supervision of licensed counselors for our mental health counseling.” She added that the organization hopes to expand its dental clinic but is in need of more volunteer dentists. Over the last year, Hope Within has seen a rising need for its services. “Across the board, we’ve seen huge increases. We’re seeing people who have lost their jobs, people

that since 2006,” McAlester noted. “In 2014, we added counseling, and we hoped to add dental in (early 2020), but COVID pushed that back until we finally opened our dental clinic in July 2020.” McAlester said the nonprofit provides primary care for uninsured, low-income people in Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. “These are people who work parttime hours without benefits or people who have lost their jobs or are unemployed,” she explained. Counseling is offered on a sliding-scale payment plan and is open to anyone, with no income qualifications. All medical services are provided by volunteers, including a volunteer

We have people who can no longer afford insulin or asthma medication,” McAlester remarked. “These medications are very expensive.” The organization typically holds four fundraisers throughout the year, but had to cancel all of them in 2020. Hope Within is planning a Valentine’s Day fundraiser, she noted, with more information coming soon on the organization’s Facebook page. “We’ll ask people to donate to us, and in return, we’ll send a personalized card out on their behalf,” McAlester explained. Along with financial constraints, the organization lost a lot of volunteer office staff and a few doctors, many of whom are elderly and were worried about the risk of continuing to volunteer during a pandemic. Despite these challenges, McAlester remains hopeful that Hope Within will continue to thrive. “We are a Christian ministry, and our faith is strong,” she stated. “We rely on our faith, and we have found that God has been faithful. Even though this past year has been hard, we have surpassed whatever goals we have set.”

Bling! from pg 1 The common thread running through LASN’s programs this year is that of challenge. The first program, on Jan. 25, featured sewing with velvet, a persnickety fabric that can pose difficulties for even experienced sewists. Celli has been asked to speak about challenges she encounters in her work, which include managing dozens of yards of fabric in a single gown and creating the attendant accessories, such as custom angel wings and blinged-out shoes. “For (the television show) we need to move equipment and people from the work room into the main show room and spread out on multiple folding tables,” Celli said. “The gypsy gowns usually need two to three large crinoline petticoats and are highly embellished. I have often had to put anywhere from three to six blingettes on one dress in order to get it done.” 2020 was also a challenge for the Sondra Celli Company. Celli noted that her biggest problem was getting supplies from her New York vendors because the state had shut down. She embraced the opportunity to reorganize and restock. “Business was down but, thank goodness, consistent,” Celli commented. “We spent a lot of time using up inventory to create masks for front line workers, donating hundreds of masks to area hospitals, veterans, and senior citizens.” LASN president Rachel Siegel noted that the silver lining of meeting virtually is that the group can more easily host guest speakers from outside the area. “Even if we don’t expect to ever create or wear something as elaborate as Sondra’s creations, I am sure that we will all learn something that we can put into use in our own sewing, whether it is a handy tool, the name of a supplier, or a technique that cleverly solves an issue,” Siegel said. Dayspring Plans Open House Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soon-to-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville. The kindergarten open house will feature a Winnie the Pooh Valentine’s Day party that will focus on Proverbs 17:17a. Parents will meet with teachers and learn about the Principle Approach, which is a method of thinking and living by God’s truth and which is the method of education used at Dayspring. Michael Myers, headmaster, noted that children learned this way during the Colonial and founding periods in America. Dayspring offers two distinct kindergarten programs. Children
begin learning about a variety of subjects, including science, history, and geography, and they begin reasoning from the Bible, noted Myers. God is viewed as the author of all subjects. Both kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what children learn in the classroom. The prekindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who have just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them, and they learn to experience the wonder of creation. The kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paperand-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program is introduced at this level. Students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation of beginning to read; many children learn to read before completing kindergarten. In addition to kindergarten, Dayspring Christian Academy offers preschool programs for children who are 3 by Sept. 1. Preschool is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. These programs offer an introduction to the alphabet as students learn a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet, culminating with a Bible Character Day complete with costumes. “Family connections in Lancaster are a lot,” Kevin commented. “(As a newcomer, I) have to make those connections in other ways.” Making connections - forging relationships among people and between God and people - is the mission of ConnectUs Church, which Kevin recently founded. From its beginning as recorded in the biblical book of Acts, the Christian church has been a place where people can find support. ConnectUs Church aims to follow that example. “We are here to help every person take their next step to becoming the person God wants them to be and do the things God wants them to do,” Kevin said. “Everyone’s trying so hard to be seen as important or feel valuable, but God offers us a life-changing identity that is received and not achieved.” ConnectUs Church has been about two years in the making. Kevin completed a church planting residency at Life Church Lancaster, and with the support of people he met while earning a digital communications degree from Lebanon Valley College, several Life Church members, and Alisha’s parents, who
moved to Lancaster from Pittsburgh, he created ConnectUs Church, an independent congregation that is part of Converge. The Northeast Collaborative, which aims to remedy the isolation of leaders from resources and teammates, has helped with funding, accountability, and partnerships. “COVID has thrown a wrench in (the launch),” Kevin remarked. “There’s no book on how to start a church in a pandemic.” COVID-19 delayed the start of worship services, but for the last month, ConnectUs has been meeting at Reel Cinemas, 1500 Christopher Place, Lancaster, on Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon, with gatherings beginning at 10 a.m. The adults gather for worship in one theater, and children meet in another one. A nursery is located in a private hallway. A formal grand opening was held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 31. Kevin delivered a message titled “Meet Jesus: When Real People Meet the Real Jesus.” During the following four weeks, the sermons will discuss how listeners can connect to God’s next steps for their lives.

The wins improved the Knights’ overall record to 9-0 on the year. The Knights secured three falls to help pull away from the Wildcats. Gio Luciano (113) opened with a 3:27 fall, and Dylan Bard’s 5:41 fall at 160 pushed the lead to 21-15. Jorden Williams, however, had the last say, working a 1:32 fall to seal

Jase Colino claimed the 200 individual medley at 2:33.08. The Hempfield girls won the 400 free relay with Maggie Shaffer, Carol Fabian, Cassandra Christoffel and Anna Koger combining for a winning time of 4:00.13. Shaffer joined Caroline Schweigert, Ella Root and Emily Musser for the 200medley relay. The foursome posted a time of 1:57.52. Several relay participants went on to post victories in individual events. Koger sprinted to victory in the 50 freestyle in 26.76 seconds. She won the 100 free in 59.03. Shaffer went on to win the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.32 and the 100 fly in 1:02.41. Christoffel was up to the challenge in the 200 free, winning the event in 2:09.98. The 100 backstroke belonged to Schweigert (1:04.41) Emily Taylor won the 200 IM with a time of 2:23.08
while Lilliam Farmer outlasted the competition in the 500 freestyle (5:41.94). BOWLING The Knights were at Leisure Lanes to face Penn Manor in Section One bowling on Thursday, January 21. The Comets came away with a 7-0 victory. McCaskey topped Hempfield by the same margin four days later back at Leisure. Xander Green was the Knights’ leader against Penn Manor, compiling a score of 625, which included a top score of 238 in his third game. Manor’s Charlie Hull racked up 616 and Derek Warfel a 611. The loss to the Comets dropped Hempfield’s league mark to 2-9. Losing to McCaskey lowered the Knights’ overall record to 14-14. Derick Keller and Mitchell Barnes rolled solid games against the Red Tornado. Barnes began with a 225 and finished with 622 points overall. Keller’s best was his second game where he racked up 226 points, finishing on the day with 629 points.

FREE Health & Wellness Classes in February & March Chronic Disease SelfManagement: Beginning February 10, 2021 a 6-week program that is done over the telephone with a small group of Lancaster County residents age 50+ who are living with a chronic disease. The program is structured to help participants better manage their ongoing health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, and heart disease. Weekly topics include ďŹ nding better ways of dealing with pain and fatigue, easy exercises to help improve or maintain strength and energy, learning the appropriate use of medications and improving nutrition.
