ConnectUs Church To Launch On Sunday evin Greene’s relatives are spread throughout two countries. He was born in British Columbia, then his family moved to Wilmington, Del., when he was 5. Kevin’s mother’s family lives in Manitoba, and his father’s sister lives near Niagara Falls. Kevin and his wife, Alisha, moved to Ephrata five years ago. Lancaster County, with its genealogical roots stretching back three centuries for some people, is quite different than Kevin’s experience. “Family connections in Lancaster are a lot,” Kevin commented. “(As a newcomer, I) have to make those connections in other ways.” Making connections - forging relationships among people and between God and people - is the mission of ConnectUs Church, which Kevin recently founded. From its beginning as recorded in the biblical book of Acts, the Christian church has been a place where people can find support. ConnectUs Church aims to follow that example.
Schreiber Announces Minority-Directed Scholarship

Kevin completed a church planting residency at Life Church Lancaster, and with the support of people he met while earning a digital communications degree from Lebanon Valley College, several Life Church members, and Alisha’s parents, who moved to Lancaster from Pittsburgh, he created ConnectUs

A program dedicated to helping individuals in transition has made its own move. The New Choices Career Development Program, most recently sponsored by the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC), will return to its founding organization, the YWCA Lancaster. New Choices was created in 1985 to help individuals develop essential job-seeking and work skills, and classes were held at the YWCA, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, for many years. Later, the program’s headquarters was moved to the PA CareerLink of Lancaster County
On Jan. 15, the anniversary of the late Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, one local organization announced its most recent effort to promote diversity and inclusion, ideals to which King dedicated much of his life. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, has established a scholarship that will benefit graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds. Church, an independent congregation that is part of Converge. The Northeast Collaborative, which aims to remedy the isolation of leaders from resources and teammates, has helped with funding, accountability, and partnerships. “COVID has thrown a wrench in (the launch),” Kevin remarked. “There’s no book on how to start a church in a pandemic.” COVID-19 delayed the start of worship services, but for the last month, ConnectUs has been meeting at Reel Cinemas, 1500 Christopher Place, Lancaster, on Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon, with gatherings beginning at 10 a.m. The adults gather for worship in one theater, and children meet in another one. A nursery is located in a private hallway. A formal grand opening will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31. Kevin will deliver a message titled “Meet Jesus: When Real People Meet the Real Jesus.” During the

Schreiber president James DeBord has led the creation of several initiatives committed to reducing disparities in care and to fostering an organization that better reflects the diverse populations it serves. The ushers were Derek Bitner, brother of the groom, and Andrew Hayward, John Hayward, James Hayward, and Scott Hermann, brothers-in-law of the groom. The ring bearer was Joel Hayward, nephew of the bride. The bride was given in marriage by her father. The bride carried a traditional bouquet layered with white and blush roses, white lisianthus, pink spray roses, and touches of ruscus and eucalyptus greens, designed by Susan Mayer of Divine Florals. Providing music for the ceremony were Frank Dodd, piano; Richard Amoroso, cello; and Hope Linton Davis, violin. Due to COVID-19 restrictions announced close to the date of the wedding, the reception was changed from the original venue. The bride and groom were able to celebrate with family members and a few close friends. The couple resides in Mountville.

The wedding of Anne Virginia Mary Hayward and Darian Miles Erb took place on Dec. 12, 2020, at Westminster Presbyterian Church of Lancaster. Dr. John Light officiated at the 1 p.m. ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Hayward Jr. of Lancaster. She graduated from Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS) and graduated from Lancaster Bible College in 2017. She is employed by Barnes & Noble and LCCS in Lancaster as well as Veritas Academy in Leola. The groom is the son of David M. Erb of Manheim and Karen J. Erb of Lancaster. He graduated from Hempfield High School and from Northland College in 2017. He is employed by TE Connectivity in Landisville. The matron of honor was Joy Hayward Hermann, sister of the bride. The bridesmaids were Michelle Collier; Heidi Hayward, sister-in-law of the bride; and Allie Hayward, sister-in-law of the bride. The flower girl was Katherine Hayward, niece of the bride.
Although the ongoing pandemic has prompted the 10day series of classes to be held virtually, participants continue to study the existing New Choices curriculum. They receive training in areas such as conducting a job search, resume writing, and interviewing. They also learn the value of self-esteem, effective communication styles, and stress management, and students are introduced to resources in the community that help with housing, legal, and medical issues. The program aims to preserve dignity and support personal choice. Part of its funding comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, and it is overseen by Pennsylvania Women Work, which strives to transform women’s lives through empowerment, employment, and economic independence. LCCTC Dental Assistant Program instructor Rachel Sprecher noted that attending New Choices classes at the YWCA ultimately led to her current position. “I didn’t think that I was capable of much, and I didn’t think that there was much point in trying,” Sprecher commented. “The program helped build self-confidence, which was a huge part of getting me where I am today.” New Choices classes are offered free of charge to individuals over the age of 18 who have earned at least a GED or high school diploma and are single parents, first-time preg-

Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soonto-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville. The kindergarten open house will feature a Winnie the Pooh Valentine’s Day party that will focus on Proverbs 17:17a. Parents will meet with teachers and learn about the Principle Approach, which is a method of thinking and living by God’s truth and which is the method of education used at Dayspring. Michael Myers, headmaster, noted that children learned this way during the Colonial and founding periods in America. Dayspring offers two distinct kindergarten programs. Children begin learning about a variety of subjects, including science, history, and geography, and they begin reasoning from the Bible, noted Myers.

Safe Communites will hold a “Journey With Tamar” retreat for adult survivors of child sexual abuse on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Attendees will discuss the Old Testament story of Tamar, daughter of King David, and what the story tells them about healing, resilience, and hope. Through art, journaling, and discussion, participants will explore how their stories relate to surviving and resilience. The retreat will be facilitated by Andrea Stoner Leaman, MSW, program manager for Safe Communities, and Linda Crockett, director of Safe Communities. Each year, the festival brings thousands of dancers, musicians, and fans of Celtic culture to downtown Lancaster. It is possible that the dance and music competitions can still take place in an

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Hempfield girls’ basketball team has played some impressive defense this year. That was evident in Wednesday night’s Section One showdown with Manheim Township as the Black Knights earned a 30-17 victory on the road, improving to 4-0 in Lancaster-Lebanon League play (4-2 overall). Asked about the defense being the key to the success in the early going, head coach Kendra Merrifield replied, “I think that’s a huge part of it. When our girls come out and play strong defensively, we can keep teams where we want to. Our team functions better when our defense is our main focus.” Merrifield was asked if maintaining a solid defensive game was the focus coming into this season. “It is a continued improvement,” the coach replied. “Last year’s group worked on that and we returned the core of that group.” Hempfield held Township to only five points in each of the first two quarters and seven points in the third. The defense blanked the Blue Streaks in the fourth quarter. Lauren Moffatt led all scorers with 10 points. Autumn Cook scored seven. “Lauren did a great job in the off-season improving her game,” Merrifield remarked. “She has adjusted well on the perimeter and has done a great job grabbing the rebounds.” Having topped McCaskey in the season opener and defeating

Lancaster resident Nate Luvice is only 22 years old, but he is already concerned about the legacy he will leave. “I want to be sure that I leave my mark in this community,” said Luvice. “When people talk about me, they will say that (I) made a change.” Luvice is a full-time mentor and student services coordinator with Bench Mark, a program located on East Liberty Street in Lancaster city that focuses on giving opportunities to under-served youths through weightlifting. Luvice’s history with the program began seven years ago when he heard Bench Mark founder Will Kiefer speak at Phoenix Academy. Luvice noted that he specifically remembered Kiefer saying he wanted “to give back.” “That sounded strange to me,” said Luvice. “(In my experience), it (was) not usual for someone to want to help you with nothing in return.” Luvice and Kiefer began meeting for coffee. Luvice recalled that he had no identification. “(Kiefer) helped me get my driving permit and all my identification,” Luvice stated. While Luvice appreciated the help, he was
not ready to fully commit to a new perspective. “I was scared of change,” Luvice admitted. “ W hen you’re uncomfortable, you’re growing.” Luvice noted that during that time period, he was in and out of jail, but Kiefer never gave up on him. In 2016, Luvice made a decision. “I was shot in the stomach, and I lost four liters of blood,” said Luvice, who still carries a bullet in his lower spine. “I knew it was time to change.” Early one morning while still in the hospital, Luvice reached out to Kiefer. “I said, ‘I really need your help. Now it’s time,’” recalled Luvice. Kiefer, who was on a mission trip to Honduras, wrote back that he would visit Luvice upon his return. “I thought he wouldn’t come. I thought I blew it,” said Luvice, “but sure enough he came to my house when I was recovering.” Since then, Luvice has turned to Kiefer without reservation. “He has been a father figure and mentor,” said Luvice, who noted the hardest part of adjusting was letting go of friends who were not supportive of the changes he was making for himself and for his two children.

A little over a year ago, Kiefer offered Luvice a chance to become a mentor through a curriculum that developed into the Student Leadership Program, which helps build leaders in the community. “I started seeing that I could build a connection with kids because I look like them and I talk like them,” said Luvice. “I really enjoyed knowing I was involved (in their lives) when they would tell me they got a good grade on a test or they were helping their mom with something.”
“Nate has done the full 180 degrees from where he was to where he is now,” said Kiefer. “I have never seen anyone else give up what he had to give up to get there.” Luvice agreed, noting that he has no fear of the future. “I am not afraid to move forward,” he said. “The mentors all build each other up.” Bench Mark is currently open from 3 to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.
