t the age of 3, Hempfield High School (HHS) alumnus Malcolm Corley was diagnosed with a developmental disorder on the autism spectrum. This means that Malcolm struggles with social cues and has limited verbal expression. Art, however, has helped Malcolm overcome these obstacles. At about the same time that Malcolm received this diagnosis, he expressed an interest in art by creating drawings inspired by the television show “Blue’s Clues.” Next came re-creations of Dr. Seuss’ illustrations, some of which he made from memory. Malcolm noted that his favorite medium is drawing, and his favorite part of the artistic process is “when it’s finished.” According to his mother, Maria Corley, he sometimes struggles to get in a groove and may spend more time “stimming” in a painting session than painting. “Of course, stimming could be the same as thinking about how he wants to approach the work,” Maria commented. “He picks up momentum, usually, when the end is near. Then he really appreciates what he’s created.” During his time as a student at HHS, Malcolm was encouraged by teacher Brian Lehman to enroll in an Advanced Placement (AP) art class despite his disability. “Untitled #1,” an acrylic painting he created in this AP art class, was one of 15 works chosen by The Kennedy Center’s 2019 VSA program. Malcolm was the youngest artist to be recognized and the only one with no postsecondary art training. “Untitled #1” was also chosen, along with his “Hoodie Self-portrait,” for the CRIP Ritual art show in Toronto, Ontario, which has been rescheduled for winter 2022. In addition to being included in various publications and on websites, Malcolm’s art has been shown locally at the Ware Center, the Winter

Even though Lancaster resident Krista Hurley has been running since 2011 and running half marathons since 2012, prior to last year, the farthest she had ever traveled to run was South Dakota in 2020. On that trip, she ran the Crazy Horse Half Marathon - one of 18 half marathons and two full marathons she has now completed. A series of events in 2021 led to Hurley setting a new travel record for her running. While training for a fall half marathon, Hurley posted a photo online that led to her first European half. “I had to do a long run on a Friday morning near work,” she recalled, noting that completing eight 1mile loops in cold, rainy weather in the darkness was a source of pride. It has also been featured in two juried international sales: Art of Possibility at the Courage Kenny Rehab Center in Minneapolis and the 2019 and 2020 Art Ability Exhibitions at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, where one of his pieces received an honorable mention prize. “Three Faces of Malcolm” was chosen for the 2021 Art of the State exhibition at the Harrisburg State Museum of Pennsylvania. In the fall of 2021, PromptPress

published “Studies in Brotherly Love,” a limited-edition book of poems about Malcolm’s art and the reproductions of the works that inspired them. Award-winning poet, writer, and film producer D.J. Savarese, along with three students currently enrolled in the University of Iowa’s writing program - Jorrell Watkins, Lateef McLeod, and Claretta Holsey provided the words to amplify Malcolm’s art. Artist Jaz Graf designed and hand-bound the book. “I just want to thank all of the

people who have been in Malcolm’s corner, like Laurie Cubell, the former director of the Emerald (Foundation), as well as Barry Kornhauser and Julie Pyle Childs of the Ware Center,” said Maria. “I should single out my sister, Patricia, for creating his site. she mused, recalling crossing the River Arno and seeing Christmas trees dotting the town. Hurley noted that the homestretch of the run - with the Leaning Tower straight ahead and then the course turning left toward the Pisa Cathedral and Baptistery, where the finish line awaited was especially memorable. Hurley kept herself busy while waiting for the Willet sisters to complete the full marathon. During the afternoon, she climbed the Leaning Tower. “I rounded a corner, and it was (suddenly) leaning,” she recalled. “You are walking up, but it’s leaning down.” Hurley enjoyed the view of the mountain range from the top. The trio spent a few nights in Pisa before visiting Florence. They also traveled to a number of towns, including Lucerne, Switzerland, and the town of Colmar, France. “All these little towns are decorated for Christmas with lights and trees. It’s so festive,” said Hurley. “At times, I would look around and think, ‘I can’t believe I am doing this.’ It was totally worth it, and I would do it again.”

saw the photo and asked Hurley to join her and her sister, Hannah, at the Athens Marathon in Greece in November. The Willett sisters, from Millersville, currently reside in Speicher, Germany, where Esther is in the Air Force and Hannah works on base. Hurley knew she could not be prepared in time for Athens, but she learned the sisters also planned to run the Pisa Marathon in Italy in December, and that run offered a half marathon option. “I figured if I did the half, I would still have time and energy to see things and explore the town (of Pisa),” recalled Hurley, who began a modified training regimen to keep herself in shape after finishing a local half in November. She flew from Harrisburg on Dec. 14, arriving in Frankfurt, Germany, on Dec. 15. After a few days in Germany, which included visiting Christmas markets, including one in Luxembourg, the trio drove through Switzerland to Pisa. The run was held on the morning of Dec. 19. Hurley reported that the weather was sunny with temperatures in the 30s. The flat course both started and ended near the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. “I knew going in I wouldn’t have my best time because of jet lag, so I just wanted to enjoy the scenery,” said Hurley, who took more photos than she usually does while running. “It was a beautiful course, and when do I get the chance to do this?”

Hempfield did not take the foot off the accelerator, outscoring McCaskey by nine points in the second stanza, earning a 41-20 halftime edge. Contributing to the tremendous offensive production were Lauren Moffatt, Sophia Ott, and Kira Mattes, each of whom scored in double figures. The halftime adjustments helped Hempfield overcome a 25-18 deficit. The Knights outscored the Mountaineers 13-3 in the third quarter and held off the home team 11-9 in the final period. Moffatt hit a pair of three-pointers and finished with 14 points to lead Hempfield. Cook added nine points while Baer chipped in with another seven. SWIMMING The Hempfield squads came up short against their archrival Manheim Township in Tuesday’s meet in Neffsville. In the girls’ meet, the Hempfield side had first-place finishes in four individual events. Those weren’t enough as the Streaks eked out a 105-80 victory. Taking first for the Knights were Cassandra Christoffel, Carol Fabian, Lillian Farmer, and Anna Koger. In the freestyle events, Fabian outlasted the competition in the 500 with a time of 5:29.05. Christoffel finished first in the 200 at 2:06.37 and Koger sprinted to victory in the 50 in 26.38 seconds. Farmer claimed the 100 backstroke in 1:02.53.

“Younger generations are more apt to accept, support, and encourage loved ones to get help (for mental health issues),” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “That’s a culture shift,” added McDevitt, who noted that data shows people are being educated about mental health. “That is the only way we will reduce the stigma,” she concluded. McDevitt noted that breaking through the stigma should result in a changed view of overall wellness. “We will be looking at mental health the same way we look at physical health because they’re intertwined,” she shared. “If you aren’t mentally well, you will not be physically well (and vice versa).” Noting that variables associated with COVID-19 have propelled attitudes toward mental health forward, McDevitt pointed to specific areas where struggles have been clear, including with children and in workplaces.

“I think if there’s ever a time to address good mental health support in the workplace, it’s now,” noted McDevitt. “Supervisors need to understand that depression alters the person.” McDevitt added that while job expectations are necessary, flexibility is essential to help maintain employee mental wellness.

“Someone who is struggling will be less productive, tardy, not meet deadlines, or be absent. The more (employees are supported) and connected to care, the more they want to give back, and the faster they will want to heal.” According to McDevitt, data is also showing that parents of today’s children are

likely to seek support for a child’s mental health needs. In addition, teachers and guidance counselors are available to children attending school. In Pennsylvania, young people age 14 and older may make their own mental health decisions. McDevitt noted that teenagers may contact MHALC directly to be connected to resources. Because the northeast portion of the U.S. has higher access to care, the prevalence of mental illness is lower, according to McDevitt. However, it still takes most people who experience issues more than a decade to seek help. MHALC supports and resources, including an online screening program, are available. Barnstormers Plan Donation Collection The second annual Pack the Park will take place from Monday to Saturday, Jan. 24 to 29, at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event’s goal is to fill skids throughout the entire stadium concourse level with donated items for people in need in the community. Donations can be dropped off at the Two Dudes Box Office at the stadium anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays or between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday. Donors will be greeted by Cylo, the Lancaster Barnstormers mascot, and front office staff, who will help to unload donations. All food items should be

nonperishable, with no glass containers. Suggested donation items include condiments, salad dressings, sugar, rice, canned soup, hot and cold breakfast cereals, canned fruit, chicken or vegetable stock, canned gravy, coffee, powdered creamer, tissues, paper towels, baby wipes, diapers, feminine hygiene products, full- and travel-size toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand soap, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, shaving cream, hairbrushes, hand sanitizer, razors, and shaving cream. All clothing items should be new. There is especially a need for T-shirts; thermal under-

Language Justice Initiative Announced

People interested in photography and history are invited to participate in a guided outdoor tour around historic Maytown on Saturday, Jan. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. Interested participants will meet at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11 N. Queen St., Maytown. The photo walk and historical tour will be led by local historian and Maytown resident Bob Lescallette. The focus will be on history and architecture. A limited number of organizations will receive training/technical assistance, translation, and/or interpretation services valued at up to $5,000 at no cost.
