Don’t Snooze on a Good Night’s Sleep BY JEFF FALK

The importance of sleep to a human’s overall health and well-being can’t be overstated. Both a societal problem and an individual problem - both a cause and an effect - sleep disorders are fairly common. But the good news is that at its most basic level, quality of sleep can be improved through relatively minor adjustments and common-sense measures. “We have absolutely made progress in this area,” said Masood Ahmad, a Physician Masood Ahmad prepares to monitor a study at UMPC’s R124666

It’s fitting that the next fundraiser for the Leo’s Helping Paws nonprofit group will be held on Valentine’s Day. That’s emblematic of the love Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter have for dogs. Styer and Buchter co-founded Leo’s Helping Paws in July 2014. The pair were volunteers for another rescue organization before electing to branch out on their own. “At that time, we were seeing a lot of need,” said Styer, who is the president. “There were more rescues that were being formed, and the need for vet care was the No. 1 issue with all the dogs that they would rescue, and it’s costly. In order to get them adopted, first they had to be vetted, because that’s protocol for a rescue.” Leo’s Helping Paws’ mission is to provide financial assistance for veterinary care to nonprofit all-volunteer dog rescue groups in Pennsylvania and neighboring states. The organization, made up of 40 volunteers, has also assisted outfits in Ohio, Ne w York , Mar yland, Ne w Jersey, West Virginia, Virginia, Connecticut, and Delaware. Anyone wishing to donate, volunteer, or apply for a grant can go to www.leoshelpingpaws.org. Leo’s Helping Paws, based in Lancaster city, has awarded an average of more than 80 grants per year totaling approximately $780,000 in its existence. “I am a big dog lover,” said Buchter, who is the treasurer. “I’ve always had compassion for animals. It’s just in me. It’s my nurturing instinct.” See Dogs pg 3

T h i s ye a r ’s event will be Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ephrata Agway, 731 W. Main St. Hot dogs, snacks, and beverages will also be for sale. It’s a colorful place, but it’s not happy. It’s gloomy. … I was very happy and was a little surprised that I won.” Keagan’s work touched on a topic that is becoming more prevalent with each passing day. “AI has currently taken over the world, and this one man tries his best to resist against it and tries to save his friends in this city but eventually fails to do so,” he said. “Honestly, I was very surprised to win. I was very thrilled and also kind of shocked that I got it.” Ellie wrote about people in a hurr y to discover the truth. “My stor y was about a girl

who was tr ying to find out a mystery that was in her town,” she said. “She’s racing to find the mystery before other people find it out, because there’s other people who are also tr ying to figure it out. And when she finally gets really close to finding the last puzzle piece to the mystery, the other people come in and try and steal all the information.” In addition to the work in the classroom, Ellie spent 20 minutes at home on the editing process. “I was very shocked because I didn’t think I was going to win because I was one of the last people to be called,” she said. “I kind of lost hope of winning, and then my name was called, and I was ver y surprised.” E ng lish teacher Joy Hosler was proud of her pupils. “It was very exciting to see so many kids putting in the extra effort

to perfect their pieces and then be recognized for their hard work,” she said. Hosler was also happy with the way the students are responding to their instructors. “I think the teachers here (at Hempfield) really encourage students’ creativity and pushing them to tr y new things, and this was definitely a challenge for some of them to write a story in 100 words or less,” she said. Hosler hopes the students’ success will inspire others to enter competitions. “Just as I was leaving my study hall, two of the girls said, ‘I should have submitted mine. Mine was really good. I bet I could have won,’” she said. “I think that if we do another contest like this, more kids will be interested in submitting, knowing that they could be recognized.”

physician who is certified in sleep medicine and pulmonary disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. “We understand sleep apnea better. We’re diagnosing more cases, and we’re managing them better. Now people understand it better. Everyone knows sleep is important.” Ahmad practices sleep medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sleep Lab at 1575 Highlands Drive, Lititz. The sleep lab evaluates, assesses, diagnoses and provides personalized treatments for individuals experiencing a wide range of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, narcolepsy, sleepwalking, sleeptalking, insomnia and restless legs syndrome. “We send patients to the sleep lab to diagnosis their sleep disorders,” said Ahmad. “We have to do the sleep studies to see how they sleep. Most of the times it’s nighttime studies for sleep apnea, but sometimes we do studies to see how sleepy they are during the day. We want to see how many times they stop breathing, how they maintain brain activities, how quickly they fall asleep and how quickly they get to REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. We look for body movements. We have to see what state the apnea is in. We coordinate all of those things, and then from the correlation we make a diagnosis.” With assistance from sleep technicians, typically nighttime studies are performed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. at the UPMC Sleep Lab. Ahmad refers patients to the sleep lab, examines the results of the studies and also helps treat patients who have been referred by other physicians. “If someone comes to me and tells me, ‘I can’t sleep,’ I have to pinpoint the problem,” said Ahmad. “I’ll ask them, ‘What’s your history? What’s your specific problem? When you sleep, what happens?’ Some patients have multiple problems.” “Some people can’t sleep because of behavior problems, like T V and cellphones,” continued

If it’s something simple and there is no excessive daytime sleeping, we tell patients to simply lose weight. If you lose 10% of your body weight, you may lose 50% of your sleep apnea. If you lose 20% of your body weight, then there’s a good chance you may not have it.” According to Ahmad, up to 20% of the national population has experienced sleep disorders. Sleep disorders are more common in men, people who have allergies or sinus issues and people with obesity, and there are genetic factors involved with their frequency. “I think it’s still underdiagnosed,” said Ahmad. “(Sleep disorders are a) risk factor for cancer. Sleep apnea is a risk factor for stroke. Sleep apnea is a risk factor for dementia and other diseases. It affects your immunity. It can produce hypertension, which leads to heart disease.” Because he practices what he preaches, Ahmad is his No. 1 patient. “Nine p.m. is bedtime, and 5 in the morning is when I get up,” said Ahmad. “I wake up at 5 every single day, even on weekends. Historical Society Plans Programs The East Petersburg Historical Society (EPHS) has announced its speaker programs for 2026. Members of the public are invited to hear historians speaking about topics relating to the East Petersburg history and people. The programs will be held on select Mondays at 7 p.m. at the East Petersburg Community Center Building at East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg. The first program of the year on March 2 will feature Mike and Jeanne Cassidy from Penn State Extension, who will present “Working Gardens in the 19th Century Pennsylvania Dutch Country.” A “Show and Tell”will be featured on April 6. Attendees are asked to bring their favorite antique or any item of East Petersburg history to share. The program “Historic German

Houses of Southeast Pennsylvania” will be presented by Greg Huber on May 4. This event is also the annual EPHS member meeting.
