Pathways Program Helps Youths Deal With Loss eens, if you are grieving the loss of a loved one and would like to meet with other young people who are going through the same thing, activities offered by the Coping Kids & Teens Program of the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, the bereavement program for Hospice & Community Care, might be right for you. Coping Kids & Teens is run by children’s services counselor Diane Kulas. The program has been around for 25 years, so hundreds, if not thousands, of youths have been helped by its individual and group support offerings. “Being in a group and knowing there’s another kid who went through this makes them feel like they’re not alone,” Kulas explained. During the pandemic, Kulas and her staff members have been focusing on offering individual sessions via Zoom and over the phone. They have been meeting with children and teenagers after school and during the evenings. To combat Zoom

fatigue, the professionals have dropped off art materials and games for future sessions at clients’ homes. “The best way to get (young people) to talk is to engage them in something they enjoy,” Kulas remarked. The Family Support Series is a six-week program offered in fall, winter, and spring. Due to the pandemic, sessions are being held online. Families gather via Zoom, then break into age-specific groups. Children and teenagers receive peer support and counseling, while their adult caregivers learn how to help youths grieve. Dealing with loss and grief looks different in children and teenagers as compared to adults, Kulas reported. “The best way to support a grieving child is to make sure the adult knows how to support them,” Kulas explained. “We teach them how to talk with kids, the importance of offering security and predictability, and how to establish discipline, structure, and routines.” The Coping Kids & Teens Program also runs Good Grief Clubs
and Camp Chimaqua. The clubs are school-based groups run by trained staff members. Camp Chimaqua is a weekend overnight camp for youths ages 6 to 12. Each camper is assigned a trained volunteer who provides support throughout the experience. Camp was canceled in 2020, but Kulas said she hopes that it will be offered as a one-day event this year. “Camp is a lot of fun. We try to make it interactive,” Kulas said. “We help (campers) be kids again.” An intake appointment is required before participating in any of the Coping Kids & Teens Program activities. Sometimes, young people are referred to therapists. “They can continue their therapeutic support while working on their grief,” Kulas commented. East Hempfield Township Police Department (PD) has participated in the Bleed Blue Challenge since the initiative’s inception. “We want to support Penn Medicine LG Health in its quest to get donations, especially in a pandemic year,” explained Lt. Jen Brubaker. “The blood stays local. It’s a way to give back to the community.” The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running from Jan. 4 to Friday, Jan. 29. During the initiative, participating police departments are encouraging members of their staffs and their

communities to give blood at LG Health blood drives and at the center, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite 202, Lancaster. Blood donor recruiter Anita Blizzard introduced the Bleed Blue Challenge with four PDs two years ago. It has grown to include 15 PDs this year: Manheim Township, East Hempfield, East Lampeter, Columbia Borough, Millersville Borough, Millersville University, Lancaster City, Lititz Borough, West Hempfield, Northwest Regional, Mount Joy Borough, Pequea Township, Quarryville Borough, Strasburg Borough, and Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge

in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors. LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really good. With more police stations involved, you’d assume that you’d do even better (this year),” she said. Brubaker and other police officers planned to donate blood during the Bleed Blue Blood Drive on National Law Enforcement Day, Jan. 7. “Our first responders and police are great leaders in caring for our community. This effort is one more contribution they are willing to make,” said LG Health director of laboratory operations Brian Stambaugh.

T-Mobile and Red Rose Transit Authority (RRTA) recently announced that RRTA’s entire fleet of buses serving the city of Lancaster and Lancaster County are now equipped with Wi-Fi hotspots, powered by T-Mobile’s 4G LTE and 5G networks. With the complimentary service, riders can video chat, stream their favorite show, make inroads on a work project or finish up schoolwork. Over the past year, TMobile has upgraded the 4G
LTE network in Lancaster to add capacity, extend coverage and improve the overall network performance for wireless customers. In addition, the launch of 5G in the market in 2019 means that a majority of the RRTA routes have 5G coverage, helping to provide even faster data speeds. Wechter said, adding that CareerLink can help both laborers and executives find meaningful work. “Nowadays, everybody needs help.” Wechter knows whereof she speaks, as she has been a CareerLink client three times. “My success in finding employment was due to CareerLink. (It) gave me the support I needed,” she said. CareerLink is not about just finding employment, Wechter asserted. “It’s setting you on a career path,” she said. “We meet people where they are. The goal is a sustainable career.” When appropriate, career navigators will refer clients to the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. The two organizations collaborate and support clients where possible. Wechter noted that CareerLink is not the UC office, although it does provide assistance with filing initial claims, and when the building is open, it has a direct phone line to the UC office in Harrisburg. Additionally, CareerLink is not a staffing agency, and it does not provide jobs for anyone. All of CareerLink’s services are free of charge, as it is funded by state and federal legislation as well as grants. Charlotte St., Lancaster, but during the pandemic nearly all of its services are offered solely online. “Everything can be done virtually except physically working on a computer. We hope to, in January, allow people to come in to use a computer,” Wechter said. “We are very sensitive to people who don’t have technology or don’t have internet access. We are working on providing Wi-Fi in the parking lot.” CareerLink provides three levels of service, and clients may choose which to use. The self-service option features a career resource room where individuals may use computers to conduct job searches, update resumes, file Unemployment Compensation (UC) claims, and print or fax jobrelated documents. The enhanced service includes computer usage as well as attendance at workshops, job fairs, and other activities offered by CareerLink. Personalized service - the top tier - includes a career navigator who provides personalized assistance as the client explores career options. The navigator can administer assessments of interests and strengths, interpret the results, and help clients determine what they need to access those careers. Wechter noted that $10,000 per person is available for up to two years of training in high occupancy careers. Soft skills training and computer-read resume development are also available. “You need to put as many tools in your toolbox as you can to find a job today,”

According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. County residents can dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the Lancaster County Central Park mulching site between dawn and dusk through Sunday, Jan. 31. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will go toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Prima Theatre in Lancaster announced a 2021 season aimed at invigorating lives in a historic era. The nonprofit organization’s programming will be available both in flexible intheater and streaming formats for all productions. The .918 Club will hold its regular monthly meeting in the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress and Book Arts, 117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster, on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. There is plenty of free parking. The .918 Club seeks to keep the craft of letterpress printing alive in Lancaster County through presenting demonstrations at the Heritage Press Museum to illustrate the history of printing and through providing a working letterpress job shop. During meetings, volunteers of the Heritage Press Museum share ideas and suggestions concerning the educational demonstrations and sign up to operate the print shop. Meetings also provide a place for people to learn
about letterpress printing or develop the skills to become volunteers in the print shop. The first 15 to 20 minutes of the Jan. 27 gathering will be devoted to a business meeting. A presentation or video on some aspect of printing history will be presented, time permitting. The meeting will conclude with a show and tell, and attendees are invited to bring something they printed or discovered that was printed by letterpress. Additionally, the club is seeking support through payment of dues and donations to the club. Because outside groups are currently not permitted to use the campus facilities at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, the .918 Club is receiving all its income from membership
dues, donations, and museum sales. Dues-paying members of the .918 Club will receive a membership card, a custom printed membership certificate, and regular email updates of all club meetings and events. In addition, members will be able to attend monthly meetings with full voting privileges, participate in instructional and certification workshops, schedule studio time in the center for personal use, and sell personally produced items in the Best Impression Letterpress Museum Gift Shop. Railroad Museum Posts Programs The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will offer virtual programs in January, which individuals may enjoy from the comfort of their own home. A Railroading Merit Badge Workshop will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 9 a.m. Boy and Girl Scouts ages 11 through 17 can earn their merit badge in railroading,
working virtually with historic artifacts and model trains and taking behindthe-scenes tours of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. There is a fee for a twopack of tickets for one Scout and an accompanying adult. Package deals are also available for two or three Scouts and one accompanying adult. kindergarten through grade six will experience railroad objects and interactive activities to learn about the jobs of the conductor, station agent, and engineer. Penn State Master Gardeners has announced that of all 67 counties in Pennsylvania, Lancaster County ranks first for certified pollinator-friendly gardens, with 100 certifications in the county out of 944 statewide. The Master Gardeners noted that Lancaster County also takes second place for the number of new certifications awarded in 2020. Penn State Master Gardeners created this certification program to encourage the gardening public to help protect pollinators, many of whose populations are declining. According to Penn State entomologists, pollinators are responsible for one-third of the world’s food supply. However, habitat loss, disease, and
contact with pesticides continue to threaten pollinator populations. The pollinator-friendly garden certification program encourages people to provide food and habitat for pollinators, which include native insects and other animals. In turn, pollinator-friendly certified gardens help protect plant diversity and food sources. Penn State Master Gardeners provide education and information on how private and public gardens can be certified. Visiting Angels of Lancaster and MediQuest Staffing have merged. Susan J. Heinle, registered nurse and CEO of Visiting Angels of York, Lancaster and Hanover, and Kathleen Bailey, president of MediQuest, recently made the announcement. Heinle and Bailey both serve on multiple boards and committees within the
Lancaster and York areas and are dedicated to offering ongoing training and certifications to all staff members and caregivers. Going forward, MediQuest staffing will be a division of Visiting Angels of Lancaster and all operations will be from the Visiting Angels office at 2141 Oregon Pike, Lancaster.
Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society will offer an online workshop on the Pennsylvanian German folk art of fraktur on Saturday, Jan. 23, to 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The workshop will guide attendees through painting a fraktur with traditional colors and designs and creating a grain-painted frame to
display their work. No experience is necessary. Lynn Janelle Sommer will guide the fraktur painting segment. Fraktur is a form of storytelling using watercolor and ink that celebrates life events and usually incorporates treasured spiritual mottos, verses, or poetry. Jim King will demonstrate the grain painting process. King learned the process by restoring antique blanket chests using traditional oil or vinegar glazes. There is a fee, and participants must also purchase a few supplies on their own before the class. Previous years’ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfasts have attracted more than 700 community leaders who gathered in one place to honor King’s legacy through performances, community awards, and a keynote speech. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, when attendees gather, they will do so virtually. The 33rd annual event will be held Monday, Jan. 18, from 9 to 10 a.m. in a livestreamed format. Friends Will Host Ramble In Norway The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg will sponsor a customized trip to ride heritage railways, visit historic sites, and experience the beauty and culture of Norway. Lancaster County’s two federally qualified health centers (FQHC) are merging to provide accessible, affordable, and integrated primary care, dental care, behavioral health, and social services throughout Lancaster and Lebanon. The boards of Lancaster Health Center and Welsh Mountain Health Centers unanimously approved the merger on Oct. 29 after months of due diligence and discussion. Lancaster Health Center, founded in 1972, has 178 staff members, an $18 million operating budget, and five Lancaster locations. These locations provide services to a total of more than 21,000 patients. Welsh Mountain Health Centers, founded in 1969, has 97 staff members, a $10.1 million operating budget, and five locations throughout Lancaster and Lebanon. These locations provide services to a total of more than 14,000 patients. Both organizations are recognized as patient-centered medical homes. A patient-centered medical home is defined by the National Committee for Quality Assurance as a model of care that puts patients at the forefront of care, building better relationships between patients and their clinical care teams. Lancaster Health Center and Welsh Mountain Health Centers are part of a larger movement of FQHCs, which are community-based, nonprofit organizations that provide comprehensive primary health care to patients in their community. FQHCs are created by individuals in a community coming together with a mission to improve access to primary medical care in an underserved area. Every Community Health Center is different, but they all care for patients in a community-oriented, culturally embracing setting, partnering with patients and their families to understand and respect each patient’s unique needs, culture, values, and preferences. The Lancaster County Community Foundation provided the two organizations with a $20,000 partnership grant to explore a merger.
