Tournament Proceeds Presented To Food Pantry
State Of The Art: Teacher’s Work Displayed In Exhibition BY COURTNEY MENGEL
he English banker, philanthropist, scientist, and politician John Lubbock is credited with saying, “Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colors flowers, so does art color life.” According to Hempfield High School (HHS) art teacher Amy Edwards, art is where she has always felt most at home. Edwards grew up in Lancaster County, attended Pequea Valley School District, earned her bachelor’s degree in art education at Kent State University in Ohio, and received her master’s degree from Millersville University. Her first professional job after graduating from Kent State University was working as an art teacher at HHS. She’s been there since 1996. “I just see kids who are hungry to make things, and to be creative, and to have a person that they can talk to, and be encouraged by all of it,” said Edwards. “I mean, it’s not about becoming the next greatest artist. It’s about being creative.” From Sept. 26 to Jan. 2, Edwards’ artwork was featured in the 54th annual “Art of the State” exhibition at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. This marks the fourth exhibition at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in which Edwards’ work was shown. The piece she submitted for the exhibit is titled “Talisman for the Schuylkill Expressway.” Edwards originally created the work for a different show in Philadelphia surrounding the theme of connections. “I always try to make a personal connection with what I’m making because that’s the only way I can make something authentically,” said Edwards. “I just thought
Hempfield recCenter hosted the 14th annual Koser Jeweler Tennis Challenge on Aug. 9 to 15. The event attracted competitors from 21 countries. Notable players included US Open singles champion Emma Raducanu of Great Britain, US Open doubles finalist Catherine “Caty” McNally from the U.S. and Koser champion Nuria Parrizas-Diaz from Spain. During the week of the tournament, organizers held a fundraising program called “Serving Up Aces.” Sponsors and local residents could pledge $1 for every ace served during the tournament, and the proceeds would be given to the Hempfield Food Pantry. about what connects Lancaster to Philly, and I remember long drives on the Schuylkill Expressway with my parents, so I just started to research it.” The talisman includes pieces of broken glass, hand-polished reflectors, tiny car tires, and mapped accident points. “I think I just want people to know how grateful I am to be included and to be called an artist in
Pennsylvania,” noted Edwards. “That will never get old.” Edwards said that one of her biggest supporters is Becky McDonah, who also had work featured in the show. Edwards was one of McDonah’s students at Millersville University, and Edwards has continued to work with McDonah for the past seven or eight years. “She was kind of the first person that

Grant Supports MilitaryShare The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank received a $110,000 grant from Feeding America and an anonymous donor to address food insecurity among military families and veterans through its MilitaryShare program. MilitaryShare distributes food to veteran and military families on-site at armories, VFWs, and AMVET locations. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank currently operates 38 MilitaryShare sites throughout 20 central Pennsylvania counties, serving more than 5,700 individuals annually. The $110,000 grant will help the Central Pennsylva-
nia Food Bank continue to provide its MilitaryShare sites with boxes of healthy, shelf-stable food items and fresh items such as milk, meat, eggs, and produce. It will also help the food bank to develop best practices among all its MilitaryShare sites, refine its agreements with the sites to foster longterm sustainability, and engage in SNAP assistance outreach with MilitaryShare clients. Fritz, who began as the congregation’s director of traditional music last July, is a professor of music at Elizabethtown College. He earned degrees from Westminster Choir College, Florida State University, and the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Choirs directed by Fritz have toured Ireland, Wales, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Brazil, and areas throughout the eastern United States. In addition, he is an active adjudicator and clinician, having conducted honor choirs and all-state choirs in Alaska, Florida, Maryland, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia. As part of the Starlight Tea concert series, Lancaster Church of the Brethren (COB) will present its annual Epiphany concert featuring the Chancel Choir and Carillon Bell Choir, directed by Matthew P. The women’s swim team at Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, Va., broke two records in its meet victories over Randolph and Hollins. The Eagles won 137-35 over the Wildcats and 136-22 over Hollins. Katelyn Wiglesworth of Landisville joined three of her teammates to break one of the records in the 400meter medley relay. Wiglesworth swam one leg of the relay to team up for a time of 4:43.72, breaking the oldest record from the swim-
ming record books from 2011-12 by eight seconds. Additionally, Wiglesworth broke a school record during Bridgewater College’s women’s swim meet against Gallaudet University on Oct. 29. Wiglesworth set a new school record for the 100 IM with a time of 1:5.03. She was also a member of the first-place team in the 200yard freestyle relay, with a time of 1:51.39 seconds. Overall, Bridgewater won the meet 215-31.
HADC To Offer Scholarship The Hempfield Area Democratic Committee (HADC) invites students who live in the Hempfield School District to apply for a $500 scholarship. The award will be given to a graduating senior who will pursue a postsecondary education. Applicants can be students at any Lancaster County high school, but must be a resident in the Hempfield School District. The scholarship will be awarded based on a student’s
application, a short essay, and a brief interview. The scholarship is named for Paul and Jan Wright, residents of East Hempfield Township and longtime active members of the HADC. Railroading Merit Badge Workshop Set The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will offer a virtual railroading merit badge workshop on Saturday, Jan. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon. Designed for individual boys and girls ages 11 to 17, this is a special opportunity for Scouts who live both near to and far from the museum to learn through the virtual use of the museum’s images and artifacts and model trains. The workshop also includes behind-the-scenes tours of historic equipment like the GP30 locomotive No. 2233 and the H&BT caboose No. 16.
All requirements will be fulfilled on the day of the workshop, except for the at-home requirement, which must be done by participants at a separate time. Christmas Tree Mulching Program Posted
ServSafe Course Planned The ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course, conducted by Penn State Extension, will be held at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, in room 149 on Wednesday, Jan. 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the exam beginning at 11 a.m. If needed, Wednesday, Feb. 2, will be used as a snow make-up date. The deadline to register for this class is Wednesday, Jan. 12. These in-person trainings, taught by certified ServSafe instructors, will help participants learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling, and serving the food, as well as proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities. After completing the course and passing the multiple-choice exam with a
score of 75% or higher, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification is good for five years. Penn State Extension will follow applicable state and local restrictions and Penn State COVID-19 guidelines in effect at the time of an event regarding masking, social distancing, and facility capacity limits. Penn State will continue to require individuals to wear masks inside university buildings at all times. The course fee covers the cost of the most recent edition of the ServSafe Manager book, the exam, the answer sheet, and learning materials. Honor Society Welcomes Eckman Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), the National Leadership Honor Society, welcomed more than 1,100 new initiates from 41 universities during November 2021. The new members include Grove City College student Ruth Eckman of East Petersburg.
Students initiated into the society must be sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate/professional students in the top 35% of their class. They must also demonstrate leadership experience in at least one of the five pillars and embrace the ODK ideals.

AmeriCorps VISTA Grant Received The City of Lancaster received a three-year grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) to establish an AmeriCorps VISTA program. This nearly $400,000 grant will help the City of Lancaster focus on creating equity and capacity in the areas of economic opportunity, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, and racial equity and opportunity. This year’s emphasis will be on advancing racial equity and opportunity in city communities. The first cohort of 10 team members and one leader will serve full time for one year, helping to build capacity within the City of Lancaster government and community organizations in Lancaster city. Each team member will contribute to the goals of the project by performing activi-
ties such as providing outreach about city programs, increasing language access, expanding recruitment efforts and the intern program, and creating more avenues for residents to take part in community activities, decision-making, and planning. AmeriCorps members receive living and housing stipends during their term of service, as well as technology and transportation support and opportunities for professional development. County residents can dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the Lancaster County Central Park mulching site between dawn and dusk through Monday, Jan. 31. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The Crispus Attucks Community Center (CACC) will host its 34th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 17. Due to the pandemic, the event will once again be fully virtual. The theme is “The Fierce Urgency of Now” in reference to King’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech. The event is a fundraiser for Crispus Attucks Community Center (CACC) in Lancaster, which has been existence for nearly 100 years. It is named for Crispus Attucks, a black man who was the first American killed in the Revolutionary War. The breakfast is CACC’s largest fundraiser, annually raising $100,000 -
nearly one-third of the organization’s yearly budget. The livestreamed breakfast event will include performances, award recipients and a keynote by Aiko Bethea. Bethea is a leader, builder and connector whose career has included roles spanning the government, philanthropic, nonprofit and private sectors. After leading a legal team at the City of Atlanta under the direction of Stacey Abrams, Bethea served as director of compliance for the City of Atlanta and deputy director of a compliance department at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Most recently, she was the head of diversity and inclusion for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The
founder of RARE Coaching & Consulting, Bethea guides leaders and teams from Fortune 100 companies and global nonprofit organizations in removing barriers to inclusion. The program is designed to provide people who are enthusiastic about the environment with the information and skills necessary to share their experience and knowledge with others. Master Watershed Stewards receive 40 hours of training on a variety of topics, including water quality, stream health, native plants, recreational resources, and groundwater. This spring’s training will be held virtually via Zoom on Thursdays, March 10 to June 9, at 6:30 p.m. Optional in-person field experiences will be scheduled with COVID-19 safety measures in place.
After completing the training session, students fulfill 50 hours of volunteer service. In subsequent years, Master Watershed Stewards can maintain their status through 20 hours of volunteer time to watershed projects or programs and attending a minimum of 10 hours of continuing education training. Examples of projects and programs include designing and installing demonstration rain gardens or streamside plantings, teaching children about stream ecology, and organizing educational workshops that address topics such as backyard conservation and homeowner storm water management.

Mckonly’s Garage is proud to announce that Anthony (Tony) Olan is taking over as Service Manager, replacing Mae Carter, who left to pursue other interests. Tony has been with McKonlys for 4 years, starting as an auto technician. He was born and raised in Lancaster County and received his training at the Automotive Training Center in Exton PA. He brings years of experience and is dedicated to service. He said, “I think of every customer’s car as if it was my family’s.” In his free time Tony likes hiking, bike riding and just being outdoors. “I am excited about Tony’s new position; He brings a wealth of experience with him,” said President Kathy McKonly.
