SFMS To Sponsor Concert By Blues Musician Guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Carl “Buffalo” Nichols will perform blues and American roots music in a 7:30 p.m. concert at The Englewood, 1219 West End Ave., Hershey, on Thursday, Jan. 5. The event is sponsored by the Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) and WXPN. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Raised in a predominantly Black section of Milwaukee, Nichols grew up with a fascination for the guitar and the blues. He spent countless hours combing through his family’s music collections, listening to songs, and learning the riffs as well as the way the music told stories. See Blues Musician pg 3

Lower Dauphin students expressed their enthusiasm for mapping technologies during the third annual GIS Day.
LDHS Students Attend Annual GIS Day wenty Lower Dauphin High School (LDHS) students attended the third annual Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology on Nov. 16. The daylong GIS Day, offered in-person and online, is geared toward anyone with an interest in geospatial technology. The Lower Dauphin participants were Riana Agili-Shaban, Thomas
While at the celebration of GIS, the students heard from Emily Mercurio, the CEO and co-founder of CivicMapper, a geospatial technology development company that uses modern mapping technologies to solve a variety of issues. They also attended sessions about using geospatial applications, lidar point cloud data, Google Maps, and the building blocks of spatial data science. The event also featured hands-on activities, such as
drone flight demonstrations for highschoolers, along with hands-on GIS and mapping activities. This year marked the fourth time Harrisburg University had hosted the event, which is co-sponsored by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
