Golf event to benefit housing aid program
ff the Streets Middletown will hold its inaugural golf tournament at Sunset Golf Course, 2601 Sunset Drive, Middletown, on Friday, Sept. 6. The event will begin with registration from 6:30 to 7:15 a.m., and golf will start at 7:30 a.m. Snacks and beverages will be provided, and a beef and chicken buffet by Bob Brant Catering will be available following the tournament. Off the Streets is a national organization that help people experiencing homelessness to secure permanent housing. The local chapter serves Middletown and the surrounding communities in Dauphin County. In the all-volunteer chapter’s first year - beginning in May 2023 - it partnered with county agencies
to provide assistance to more than 40 families throughout the county. Off the Streets works with social service agencies to identify individuals and families that have the financial means to pay monthly rent but may need assistance with up-front money for a security deposit. Off the Streets provides the security deposit directly to the landlord. Many people experiencing homelessness have lost most, if not all, their material goods. To help settle these people into their new homes, Off the Streets helps to provide the basics, including beds, dressers, chairs, tables, bedding, and kitchen ware. Most of these items are donated. Off the Streets also provides volunteers to help with the moves. Community partners include Middletown Interfaith Council, Shalom House, HELP Ministries,
Run to benefit cancer research The 12th annual Blood, Sweat, and Tears Run will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, in Mount Gretna. This annual event consists of a 5K, a 5-mile course, and a 10-mile course. Runners and walkers can choose their distance. T h e re w i l l b e a p re - r u n warmup. All courses will start on Timber Road, which will be closed to traffic, and traverse the rail trail. Only the 10-mile runners will cross a public road. Portable toilets will be available

Derry Church sets blessing of animals service

In celebration of all of God’s creatures and their presence in people’s lives, Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, will offer its 17th annual worship service that includes a blessing of animals. The informal service will take place on the church’s front lawn at the corner of Mansion and East Derry roads at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, weather permitting. Animals on a leash, in a kennel or otherwise controlled may attend along with their owners.
