Derry Church to celebrate 300th anniversary
D
erry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, will hold a variety of events throughout 2024 to celebrate its 300th anniversary. The events are open to the public. The church was established in 1724 as a result of Presbyterian Scots-Irish people emigrating to the American colonies from Ireland. Many settled on the Pennsylvania frontier, and Derry’s earliest members gathered near a freshwater spring for worship under the oak trees. The church was named in honor of Derry in Ireland. Of particular historical significance is the Session House, built in 1732. To preserve the building, Milton Hershey had it enclosed by a glass structure in 1929. The Session House was used by the church and local community for a variety of purposes, including as a meeting place for church officials, a classroom, a lending library, and a community post office. “Three hundred years of existence is a significant historic
milestone in the central Pennsylvania area,” said Pam Whitenack, chair of the church’s anniversary committee. “We encourage the community to celebrate with us and invite them to several commemorative events we’re holding throughout the year.” The church’s 2024 Arts Alive concert season will be part of the celebration. The next upcoming event will be a concert by Tim Zimmerman and the King’s Brass at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7, in the sanctuary. The musicians will present hymn classics with a contemporary flair. The King’s Brass, formed more than four decades ago in Detroit, consists of professional musicians from across the country who desire to use their musical talents to lead others in praise and worship. Based in Fort Wayne, Ind., the group plays more than 150 concerts per year from coast to coast as well as international destinations. The King’s Brass’ repertoire features classical music, hymns, jazz spirituals, patriotic
marches, and more, and its original arrangements are featured on 19 recordings. Secular and sacred music critics have described the ensemble’s concerts as “superb in every way,” “innovative and well played,”

Youths learn about law enforcement careers Youths and law enforcement officers in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR) Bigs in Blue program participated in the annual field trip to the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Academy on May 13 to learn about law enforcement careers. PSP instructors provided a demonstration on how troopers are trained to safely respond to calls for service, talked about the Basic Training Program for cadets, and answered students’ questions about their day-to-day responsibilities.
Mentors and mentees decorated their own law enforcement Bigs in Blue badges to take home and participated in interactive fitness activities. Attendees were then invited to view and learn about the PSP helicopter, the Special Emergency Response Team, the Tactical Mounted Unit, Patrol Operations, and more. PSP began participating in the Bigs in Blue program in 2017. Personnel of all ranks from various locations take part in the site-based program, visiting with their mentees for school lunches, See BBBSCR pg 2 R105450
