Dauphin County Honor Guard in need of new members

In order to continue the tradition of honoring and recognizing veterans when they are laid to rest, the Dauphin County Veterans Honor Guard is seeking new members. Volunteers with the honor guard are present at the funerals of deceased veterans. Honor guard members play taps, provide a ceremonial gun salute and present an American flag to the grieving family. “We attend about 100 (events) a year,” said honor guard member Roger Calhoon. “We are contacted by the funeral home at the request of the deceased’s family. While

the majority of our funerals are in Dauphin County, we’ve had occasion to venture to adjoining counties for funerals.” There is no minimum number of volunteer hours required. “The only requirement (for volunteers) is to be able to attend funerals on Mondays through Saturdays, as this is when the majority of our funerals occur,” Calhoon noted. “The only time we get a call for Sundays if it is a person of the Jewish faith who is being buried.” He said that the honor guard, wearing uniforms and carrying ceremonial rifles, typically performs its duties at the cemetery, but in the See Honor Guard pg 4
