n order to reap the benefits of a competitive community like Lancaster, individuals must possess smarts and strong work ethics. One must be afforded opportunities. You also have to be able to communicate. You have to be able to speak and understand the mother language. Administrator Wilma Bender and instructor Pam Hasse are part of Zeltenreich Church’s valuable program that teaches English as a second language. “The English language is a melting pot of languages, just like our country is a melting pot of cultures,” Volunteer teachers, assistants and support staff for Zeltenreich Church’s ESL classes said Hasse. “The English language is very embracing of new these rules. Cylo is a character, with character. “Cylo’s role as the mascot is to bring the energy to each game day and create excitement about our team in the community,” said Madeline Davis, who is the Lancaster Stormers’ community and fan engagement coordinator, as well as one of Cylo’s handlers. “Typically, professional sports teams do have a mascot. Cylo is a very important staple to our organization and is well recognized in the community.” Cylo is the official mascot of the Lancaster Stormers professional baseball club, which plays its home games at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The friendly Cylo plays a huge role in the Stormers’ overall fan experience, as important off the field as the team and its players are on the field. “This season, we play 63 home games at Penn Medicine Park, and Cylo comes to all of them,” said Davis. “He is our biggest fan. He is a great entrance greeter, loves to give high fives and arm wrestle, and will sit with fans to watch the game.” A minor league franchise, the Lancaster Stormers compete in the Atlantic League, a circuit whose season runs from late April to early September. As for Cylo, he is in a league of his own. With his help, the Stormers have one of the most loyal fanbases in the Atlantic League, drawing an average of more than 4,000 spectators at each home contest. See Cylo pg 3

For one day in the middle of September, everyone in Lititz is Italian. “For me, (Italian culture is) special because so much of what I experience is this love of family, community, being joyful together, and it’s usually around food,” said Justina Latura, one of the organizers of L’Italia Festival. “There’s always food. There’s so much food, and pride and love in the food. The culture is tied to eating, and all the food is made with love. “It’s very similar to the food culture we’re so proud of in Lancaster,” continued Latura. “I feel like it’s an easy comparison. Tradition is so important in Italian culture, and it’s important in Lancaster as well.” In a very short time, L’Italia Festival has taken its place alongside all of the great events that Lititz hosts. This year’s edition of the annual celebration of what it means to be Italian will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, downtown on East Main Street, between Cedar Street and Cherry Lane. The street festival is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. “It’s vibrant, it’s festive, it’s fun,” said Latura. “Italian culture is bubbly, gregarious, and you want to be a part of it. It’s high energy. It’s friends, it’s family. It’s just for the community, to support the

Italian community.” There will be a lot going on that day. The L’Italia Festival will feature staged musical and vocal performances, live cooking demonstrations, food trucks, food tents, beverage gardens, a kids’ activity zone, a car show and a craft market. “We have the use of a lot of green space,” said Latura. “We try to keep it active all day long. The festival is a celebration of Italian culture. It is created for and supported by Italian Americans and people who aren’t Italian at all. We really try to highlight culture, food, music and dance.” Last year’s L’Italia Festival, which was conducted in Lititz Springs Park, drew nearly 20,000 visitors from all over Lancaster County, surrounding communities and neighboring states. “L’Italia Festival seems to be a great partnership with the rest of the community,” said Latura. “It’s really supposed to be a collaborative event. We want it to be a good event for the brick-and-mortars (downtown). I want people to feel welcome and excited. It’s going to be our fifth and best year. We really want to thank the community of Lititz for hosting us.” L’Italia Festival began in 2022 as a good idea. It’s blossomed through the commitments of its organizers. “There was a small group of Italians in Lititz; they met around these dinner gatherings and a desire to speak and promote the Italian language,” said Latura. “We have a large group of Italians who have immigrated to the Lititz and Lancaster area. It was like, ‘Hey, why don’t we have this picnic in the summer?’ And 3,000 people showed up. “The next year, we realized we had a festival on our hands,” concluded Latura. “We turned a picnic into this great festival in five years. I grew up coming to Stormers games and have loved him since I was a kid. Something a lot of people don’t know about him is that he is actually a distant cousin of the Phillie Phanatic.” Cylo has been part of the Lancaster professional baseball franchise since the organization’s inception 21 seasons ago. one of a comfortable, relaxed learning space,” said Hasse. “The students are already familiar with the English language. This is an environment to practice the English language. It’s meant to be enjoyable. It’s a tool and a service to help.” Based on the students’ familiarity with the language, Zeltenreich’s ESL classes offer introductory instruction on sounds, letters and words to increasingly complex levels that cover communicating with others and discussing topics, ideas and opinions. The ESL classes employ the use of textbooks and visual aids, and an emphasis is placed on pronunciation and annunciation. “The purpose of the placement tests is to put the students in the appropriate levels,” said Hasse. “Then you build from there. We try to maintain a great deal of flexibility. We don’t know who’s going to show up and their English levels. We try to build the program with the capacity for going from intro to advanced. “The primar y focus is on speaking the language,” added Hasse. “Reading is important, but there’s Google Translate. There’s not going to be as much call to write.” Anywhere between 11 and 25 students typically sign up for the ESL classes, which Zeltenreich began offering in February of 2024. Some work in the construction industry, some work for global companies with offices located in Lancaster, some have migrated to the area from other countries and others are here with refugee status. “ESL is our primary community outreach,” said Bender, a resident of New Holland. “Because we are called by God to go out into the world and preach the Gospel, this is a great opportunity. We are fulfilling a mission within the walls of our church. Lancaster County has always been a place where people have come from the nations.” Zeltenreich’s ESL classes are taught by eight volunteer teachers and assistant teachers and supported by other members of the congregation. “We have students who just want to live in America,” said Hasse, a resident of East Earl Township. “These people have gone to great lengths to come here. We want them to feel welcome, and the best way to do that is through the English language. Company Posts Hunger Action Month Efforts

In connection with Hunger Action Month, September, the Giant Company - known locally as Giant and Martin’s - will undertake several donation, volunteer, and awareness activities throughout the month to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Established by the Feeding America network of food banks in 2007, Hunger Action Month is a national campaign held every September to raise awareness and inspire action to end hunger in America. The company announced it would donate $400,000 to 24 food bank partners across its four-state operating area. The donation recipients include Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Chester County Food Bank, Helping Har vest Food Bank, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, New Hope Ministries, SHARE Food Project, Sharing Excess, South Central Community Action Program, and Water Street Mission. In addition, the Giant Company is partnering with America’s Grow-A-Row farm for Pass the Produce: Hunger Action Month Food Relay, a monthlong initiative to deliver truckloads of fresh produce to regional food banks. It is also mobilizing team members to volunteer with food bank partners throughout the month, supporting distributions and assisting with packing, stocking, and organizing efforts. Cu s t o m e r s m a y h e l p t o support their local food banks by rounding up their purchase at checkout or by purchasing a “Giving Back Is in Our Roots” reusable bag, with a portion of the proceeds from each bag benefiting hunger relief efforts. Also, for every new follower of the Giant Company’s LinkedIn page and every reaction or share of its Hunger Action Month kickoff post, the company will donate a set amount to Feeding America up to $5,000 total. Every new follower will result in at least 100 meals, secured by Feeding America on behalf of local partner food banks, provided for families in need. The fall edition of the popular community event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both Friday, Oct. 9, and Saturday, Oct. 10, inside the church’s designated book room and in an overflow room at 120 W. Main St., New Holland. A bake sale will be held at the church’s entrance in conjunction with the book sale. The event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. “People come from all over,” said Trostle. “They are surprised at our selection and very excited about our prices.” Friendship Church’s book sale will feature several thousand titles, everything from hardbacks to paperbacks, fiction to nonfiction, biographies to autobiographies and large print to audio books. Included in the works are the genres of Christian, military, crafts, cooking, gardening, animals, classics, fantasy and children’s and young adult offerings. Some of the books can be purchased for a dollar or less. A vast majority of the available books have been donated to Friendship Church by members of local communities. The church is always looking for donated books for upcoming sales. “If you have a donation, you may put them on the porch by the double glass doors,” said Trostle.
