Running for Fitness Is Elementary

ELANCO Regional for Students Scheduled

Running is a healthy activity, purported to offer benefits including improved cardio fitness, enhanced muscle and bone strength, and maybe even extended lifespan.

ELANCO School District youngsters in kindergarten through sixth grade have the opportunity to do a little running and test their speed in the ELANCO School District Regional Run for Fitness. The annual event will be held at the field along Tower Road, behind Garden Spot Middle School, 669 E. Main St., New Holland, on Sunday, Sept. 14. The runs will kick off with the kindergarten run at 2 p.m. Firstgrade students will run at 2:10 p.m., and second-grade students at 2:20 p.m. Third-graders will take off at 2:30 p.m., and fourth-graders at 2:40 p.m. Fifth-grade students will

start at 2:50 p.m., with sixth-graders running at 3 p.m. Day-of registration and course walks will be held from 1 to 1:45 p.m.

Traci Tempone, Garden Spot High School (GSHS) cross-country

team coach, who organizes the event, said that kindergarten and first-grade students will run a quarter of a mile, and second- through sixth-graders will run a half a mile.

The top five runners of each gender

in each grade will receive a place ribbon. All other runners will receive participation ribbons. Those who receive place ribbons will qualify for the Lancaster County Elementary Cross Country Championship held

Last year, Cornerstone Reproductive Health moved its annual Walk for Life event from Gap to a New Holland location that organizers thought would be more central to the ministry’s service area. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate on the day of the event.

“(Our) 2024 (date) was a not such a great weather day,” lamented Olivia Imchen, director of programs with Cornerstone. “We have had

We have thousands,” she said, gesturing around the room in the church that has been designated for the book sale. “We have all genres.”

Weaver Personal Training To Unveil New Fitness Room

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group is gearing up for its Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike and is seeking volunteers for a variety of tasks. The annual race is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, in Lancaster County Central Park, 1050 Rockford Road, Lancaster. Planning committee and race day volunteers

Weaver Personal Training, located at 684 W. Main St., New Holland (next to Sheetz), will hold an open house for its new group fitness room on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to noon. Featured will be free classes for the entire morning of the launch, as well as light refreshments and door prizes.

Weaver Personal Training has been in business in New Holland for almost 19 years, and in that time trainers have helped hundreds of people get into better shape and lead healthier lifestyles, all while offering

a comfortable, non-intimidating environment.

The group fitness room will offer another opportunity for those in the community who don’t feel as though personal training is within their budget. The group fitness program will provide an option for everyone, offering individual classes at affordable prices.

Classes will include Les Mills Body Pump and Body Flow & Core. For more information, visit www.weaverpersonal training.com.

Friendship’s fall sale has been a fixture in the church going back more than a decade. This year’s event will be held at the church, 120 W. Main St., New Holland, for two days, Friday, Sept. 12, and Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. In addition to nominally priced books and other media, a variety of individually wrapped baked goods will be sold both days. The church is handicapped-accessible, and plenty of free parking is available in the rear.

Williams gladly gives a tour of the sale area. “We have Christian fiction, and this section is romance,” she states. “We are still working on (sorting) westerns. There are so many!”

Among the genres Friendship is advertising are cookbooks, crafting books, and suspense and mystery. “There are murder mysteries (among) other mysteries,” said Williams, who noted that a number of Sue Grafton books are in that section.

Many of the books are sorted by author. Large sections are designated for prolific writers such as James Patterson, Dean Koontz, Danielle Steel, and John Grisham.

Other forms of media include CDs, DVDs, and a few VCR tapes. A large collection of PBS DVDs was recently donated. Some older comic books are included in the mix. Williams also pointed out a few books of poetry, children and young adult books, gardening, stitching, and sports. “This whole section is history and military, and we have two shelves of large print,” she shared.

sale will be donated to Red Bird Mission in Beverly, Ky. Red Bird has been working to help the people of the southeastern Kentucky mountains since the early 1900s. The mission works to alleviate poverty and create healthy sustainable communities by focusing on education, health, housing improvement, outreach, and creating economic opportunity. “It’s a Methodist Church related (ministry),” said Williams, who added that she had heard Red Bird is located in one of the poorest areas in the nation. Past funds have been raised for local causes such as children’s camp scholarships. Readers who would like more information about the church may search for “Friendship Church” on Facebook. As in 2024, the 5K walk will be on the walking trail behind the church. Because the trail is only a mile long, walkers will do three loops to equal 5K distance. The walk is open to people of

all ages, and prizes will be awarded to the individual walker and team of walkers who collect the most funds from sponsorships. Children who walk the trail will receive a passport booklet they can have stamped at various spots. “At different points on the trail, we have stations that correlate with gestational ages and the size of the baby with a different fruit,” said Imchen. “A blueberry is seven weeks.” Imchen explained that the correlating signs begin with a mustard seed, include a raspberry and a lime, and end with the watermelon. “It’s fun to have those visuals to give them an idea how fast the baby is growing,” Imchen said. Children who complete one loop will receive a prize from a prize box. “If they do all three loops, we have decorative rocks with little creatures and animals,” stated Imchen. To register ahead and seek sponsors for the 5K walk, readers may visit www .pacornerstone.org and click on “About” and then “Events.” Day-of registra -

tion at the event is also welcomed.

The amateur cornhole tournament, which was held for the first time in 2024, will be held this year as well. “People really enjoyed it, so we’re doing it again,” said Imchen. Those wishing to participate are asked to sign up in teams of two. Cornhole registration must be completed at the aforementioned website. “Look for the button that says walk/cornhole registration,” directed Imchen. Cornhole teams must sign up by Tuesday, Sept. 16, to participate. Prizes will be awarded for the first-, second- and third-place winners of the tournament.

A Kids Zone will be open throughout the event. Imchen reported that an inflatable obstacle course, face painting, balloon animals, baby chicks, and a hayride will all be included in the activities. “Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary (will give a presentation), and Ornate Dance Theatre is coming to do a dance party,” noted Imchen. “There will be lots of dif-

ferent stations and lots of activities.”

Free food will also be offered during the day. Food items to be given away will include hot dogs, popcorn, chips, and a sweet treat. Packets of tickets will be given to each registrant to redeem for free food.

“It’s a lot of fun having all those elementary students come and all race,” said Tempone, who noted that about 100 area children take part in the ELANCO event each year. “There aren’t a ton of elementary level running activities,” she added. “It’s nice to have something (for children).” Tempone did not discount the possibility that a future cross-country team member may be among the youngsters. “It might spark an interest in an elementary school runner,” she stated. Tempone also lauded her team members’ dedication to the event. “Our cross-country athletes work the run,” she said. “They do the course walks. They do the timing. They do a lot of the work. I organize it, but they keep it running.”

To register for the free race, students may visit https://tinyurl.com/4cjma yup. Tempone requests that students register by Thursday, Sept. 11; however, day-of registration will also be welcomed. “If they can get the registration done ahead, it helps, but if they don’t, it’s still good to come out,” she said. “Come out and have some fun.”
