ou know you’ve led a great life when the y name a foundation after you. But this story is as much about the people he influenced as it is about the Stan Deen Foundation or the man himself. “We just carry on his work,” said Nate Deen, the founder and executive director of the Stan Deen Foundation. “That’s the greatest way we can honor him. Stan was more than a teacher. He did so many productions, but I think his greatest production was the people. His legacy will live on every time a young person does something positive. “When I first met Stan, I was living in my car while still going to school, and I hadn’t eaten in three days,” continued Nate. “He offered me something to eat, and it changed my life. Lancaster County’s annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 9 a.m. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the fall of the World Trade Center towers. Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the ballpark. They will circle it five times, making the distance of the climb equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. “We’re just trying to carry on the motto that people developed back then to never forget,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company. “The way we can keep the memories there is to have this once a year.” Participants will be required to pay a set cost to sign up. Online registration has closed, but participants can register on the morning of the event. Every year, many first responders travel to the ballpark to participate in the event, which had 335 climbers last year. Many firefighters elect to wear their full set of equipment for the climb to emulate the way their 343 fallen brothers did to rescue those trapped in the twin towers. “A lot of them do,” Yuill said. “Some of them don’t, but we also have EMS personnel and police that will climb, and we also have members of the public that will participate.” In the past, the event has drawn first responders from all over the county, as well as states like New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Maryland. T h e Na t i o n a l Fa l l e n Firefighters Foundation distributes funds to the New York City Fire Department’s counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who assisted in the rescue efforts continue to receive counseling two and a half decades after the attacks. Yuill said that the event usually raises around $20,000. “ T hey always had a counseling services unit, but with the impact that the World Trade towers had, there were so many people, so many families that needed help,” Yuill said. “It helps meet the needs that they h av e u p i n N e w Yo r k City.” Yuill helped establish Lancaster’s stair climb 16 years ago to honor fellow firefighter Ronald Bucca. Yuill met Bucca at a training program in New York before Bucca was killed by the collapse of the World Trade Center. “(Ronald) and his partner were driving out some-

the people that died, and participants are asked to stand up when the person they are representing is called. Each participant in the climb will be wearing a badge honoring somebody who died on Sept. 11, 2001. “You think of 343 people, when you start reading their names off, it takes over 20 minutes to do,” Yuill said. “That’s when the enormity of the whole things hits you.”

This year’s conference theme is “Hope in Action: A Community Approach to Suicide Prevention.” That Thursday’s agenda will feature four one-hour breakout sessions, during which 16 topics will be addressed, including finding stillness, how faith and journaling bring peace to an anxious mind, hope beyond the visible, maternal mortality related to

mental health, when clinicians grieve, and the power of sounds and spoken word. Delivering the keynote address will be Dr. Jay Breneman, who’s the director of firearm suicide prevention for CeaseFire Pennsylvania. It has taken some time, but Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties’ Suicide Prevention Conference has picked up steam. It’s making a difference. “The quality of the conference is improving,” said Kim McDevitt, who’s been MHA of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties’ executive director for nine years. “ T his conference is so packed with such great education. Folks are fully engaged and asking good questions. It g ives me hope when I see our community coming together year after year. We all have a responsibility in this. Andon Rangelov is employed by Lighthouse Vocational Services as a job coach, and he oversees and suppor ts Jimmy ’s work a couple of times each week. “Oh yeah, (Jimmy’s) very helpful,” said Rangelov. “He will do whatever he is asked to do. He has been here a long time; he doesn’t need too much direction. Every now and then I give him guidance.” Jimmy’s duties at Signature Custom Cabinetry are janitorial in nature. He sweeps floors, picks up wood and disposes of it in the proper containers, and recycles items like cardboard. Jimmy represents himself, and what Lighthouse Vocational Services is all about, very well. “Jimmy is a good problem-solver,” said Rangelov. “He can navigate his way around. He does enjoy talking to people. He gets very excited when he communicates with people. He’s very friendly. He’s a gentleman. He’s going to offer to carry things for you. He’s not shy about offering help.” “If (other employees) need help, I’ll help them,” said Jimmy, a 36-yearold resident of Ephrata. “(Rangelov) is my coach.

He makes sure I do my job. He teaches me to do things. Now that I know him, he’s part of my life.” Jimmy has learned and grown during his time at Signature Custom Cabinetry. There are also social components and experience factors involved with his work. “He’s learned discipline, being on time and consistency,” said Rangelov of Jimmy. “He likes interacting with people. He prioritizes, and he’s improved his decision making. He just likes to be in the community.” Lighthouse offers a wide range of vocational services, including training, transitional programs, educational enrichment and volunteer opportunities. Rangelov is one of six job coaches employed by Lighthouse Vocational Services. “ We work with high-functioning people,” said Rangelov. “When they do well, it’s easier for me. When you come to Lighthouse, you’ve got to apply for spots. Depending on their abilities, they could work at Lighthouse, in the community or they could just volunteer. the performing arts and various aspects of media as vehicles, the Stan Deen Foundation seeks to positively affect the lives of students and teenagers, not unlike the impact Stan had on Nate and thousands of other New Holland-area youths. Overseen by a board of directors, the Stan Deen Foundation sponsors a pair of Garden Spot High School scholarships, one designed to assist a student who excels in the classroom and the theater and another that seeks to further the fortunes of an underdog student. T he Stan Deen Foundation is funded through private donations, and it recently received $8,500 in funds from the organizers of the New Holland Classic Car Show. But the foundation’s biggest strength, at least at this point of its development, might be its ability to cooperate and collaborate with similar, like-minded nonprofits. “ The mission is to support underser ved children in New Holland, L a nc a s te r Co u nt y a nd across the country,” said Nate. “We want to inspire hope in their lives. We believe one caring adult can change the lives of kids. We really try to find unique opportunities. We don’t try to reinvent what other great nonprofits are doing. We’ll partner with them.” Stan taught English at Garden Spot High School for 30 years and directed hundreds of theatr ical productions, both within the school district and throughout the community. After experiencing a stroke two years earlier, Stan passed in his sleep on July 22, 2016. His impact on the area cannot be overstated. “We want to infuse art into young people’s lives,” said Nate. “ That’s what happened to me. I was living in my car, and he got me involved in the arts at Garden Spot. We never turn down an opportunity. We can refer them to someone else. We want to help that underdog, even though we may not know their stories. Stan loved the underdog, and I was the underdog. He did it through small moments

Walk and Run to Raise Funds

Lancaster Bible College’s homecoming and family weekend will include the second annual Bethany Walk in Love Walk/Run on Saturday, Sept. 19, on the college’s campus, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. The family-friendly fundraising event, benefiting the Safe Families program, will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m., followed by a time of gathering and prayer before the 10 a.m. walk and run. A toddler race and the presentation of awards recognizing the top individual and team fundraisers are also part of the morning lineup. Those participating in the event may stay on LBC’s campus to enjoy food trucks, games and kids’ activities, a car show, sports games, and more. Walk and run registration includes a race T-shirt and bib number. Race materials will be distributed on the morning of the event, so participants should plan to arrive early. Runners may sign up in person until noon on the day of the race as well. Safe Families works to keep children safe and families together in Pennsylvania. Participants in the Bethany Walk in Love Walk/ Run will aim to raise awareness of and provide support for families facing challenges like poverty, homelessness, and health issues.
