Lighthouse Celebrates 50 Years of Service

When Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) began in 1975, it had more founders than participants. Then called Lighthouse Rehabilitation Center, the organization was envisioned by Norman Hahn, Melvin Martin, John Sensenig, and Ben Weaver, who sought to create a place where individuals with disabilities could grow, connect, and gain a sense of accomplishment.

On July 25, LVS, now located at 144 Orlan Road, New Holland, celebrated 50 years of service to its participants. The event, which was given the theme “Created to Shine,” included a number of speakers, a legacy ribbon-cutting ceremony, and tours of the facility.

Liz Ackerman, executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, served as master of ceremonies for the event. “Today marks a significant

milestone not only for Lighthouse but also for the community,” said Ackerman, who noted that an organization that has done such important work and faced and overcome adversity over the years, while continuing to be guided by Christian principles, deserves to

be celebrated. “As you experience what Lighthouse is for those it serves - not only the participants, but the parents, the families, and the business community - you will see that Lighthouse truly is a gem within our community,” Ackerman stated.

Ackerman introduced Landis Zimmerman, president of the LVS board of directors, calling him a “true servant leader.” Zimmerman then offered the invocation, beginning by quoting Matthew 5:16. “Our theme for this is Shine … ‘Let your light so

When Fred Hughes became the director of the New Holland Band in January 2024, he had an idea to reprise the organization’s park concert appearances that he remembered from his time in the band as a teenager. “I wanted to bring the band’s summer concert series back,” stated Hughes. “(The New Holland Band) used to play at several different parks throughout the county.”

Hughes went to work looking for grant money to resurrect the series he remembered, and he secured funds from the High Foundation

Pennsylvania Rep. Keith Greiner read from a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He also noted that the work of LVS is exemplary of the many blessings of eastern Lancaster County. “This is just one of the ministries with which God has blessed this area,” he said. Greiner pointed out that the programs of LVS now have more than 100 staff members serving about 250 individuals, helping them to “know the fulfillment of accomplishment and prepare for lasting employment.” “These programs are designed to enhance quality of life for all,” he said.

Stephen Ranck, who

When it was time to introduce LVS executive director Gary McMullen, Ackerman described how McMullen took action to be sure the decor for the event did not break the budget. “He shared this morning that they wanted to have lots of flowers around the stage,” stated Ackerman, who went on to explain that McMullen planted and tended to the many coleus plants that loaned their beauty to the venue. McMullen, who has helmed the ministry for about a year, gave credit to LVS staff members whom he said provide “customer care and leadership to facilitate growth to people with disabilities.” “Our team members are experts in supporting employment

goals and presenting real work opportunities for our participants,” he said. In discussing the LVS mission, McMullen turned to Esther 4:14, sharing the words of Mordecai to his niece, “Who knows but you have come to this royal position for such a time as this?” he read, adding, “Esther was strategically placed to have influence on King Xerxes. She responded, and the Jewish nation was spared.” McMullen likened Esther’s actions to the founders of LVS and the growth of the organization over the last five decades, noting that LVS participants work not only in the Orlan Road building, but also for more than 30 area nonprofits and in more than 200 businesses with which LVS collaborates. “We have much to celebrate,” he said.

Lydia Messner represented the office of Pennsylvania state Sen. Scott Martin. She noted that the senator “has a heart for this community, especially those with disabilities.” She read from a citation that lauded LVS’ “strong reputation for the highest quality of service throughout its history and

steady adherence to the principles of fairness, reliability, and integrity.”

Marshall Miller, communications director for state Sen. James Malone, spoke as well, noting that Malone has two adult children with autism. “(Malone) knows capstone moments like this are exciting, but (also that) it takes a lot of day-in-andout care and love to give the necessary support, and he appreciates the work you do,” stated Miller.

One highlight of the celebration was when Lisa Landis, known as the host of WJTL’s “Kid’s Cookie Break” show, interviewed her nephew JJ Ator, who is an LVS participant. Explaining that she and JJ speak on the phone daily, she asked Ator about his favorite things, including his favorite food, meatballs; favorite video game, Mario Kart; and what he likes about work. Attendees learned that JJ does not like fire alarms but enjoys taking the blue bus to LVS, and that he signed the weather as part of the television production team at Conestoga Valley High School while a student there. JJ demonstrated signs for the sunny weather on the day of the event and the rain expected later in the day. He was then called upon to work with McMullen to cut the legacy ribbon while surrounded by other speakers and staff members from LVS.

Gospel Concert Planned

Fivepointville Bible Conference, 528 Chapel Lane, Denver, will present an evening of gospel music on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 6:30 p.m. The concert will feature a hymn sing, a men’s quartet, and husband-andwife duo SweetLife.

New Holland Band

in the summer of 2024. According to Hughes, High provided enough funding to get the New Holland Band Concerts in the Park Initiative started this year. The series kicked off with the traditional July 4 concert in New Holland.

For the next number in the initiative program, the band will perform a free concert at Thomas P. Grater Community Park, 320 Cocalico St., Ephrata, Sunday, Aug. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. “Ephrata was the next logical place to go,” noted Hughes, who added that New Holland Band history recorded a concert in the Grater Park band shell just prior to the first planning sessions for the organization’s trip to Longvic, France, in 1974. “It’s good we are going back after all these years.”

Hughes has planned a number of tunes for the

concert, ranging from marches to waltzes to Broadway fare. He said he is featuring some Strauss compositions because he believes the waltzes compliment the atmosphere of a summer evening outdoors. “Waltzes tend to lend themselves to light summer fare,” he stated.

The event will kick off with “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and the first half will include a tango and a few medleys. “Appalachian Morning,” which Hughes said is a newer piece by Robert Sheldon, was written to put the spotlight on the settlers of the area where Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee meet. “It’s a beautiful piece that represents sunrise through the day,” said Hughes. The first half will also include a medley of eight songs from “The Wizard of Oz” and end with the “Broadway Showstoppers Overture,” which includes well-known tunes,

Promise Players Set Auditions

The Promise Players will hold auditions at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, Aug. 24, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. for the group’s fall play, “Casting Swine Before Pearls” by Brian Sylvia. The play will be performed on Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 6 to 9, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 13 to 16.

The play is set in a small rural church, where the leaders are ecstatic when a longtime member leaves

his fortune to the congregation. But there is one caveat: They must care for his three prized hogs. Roles are available for three men, two women, and two flexible positions. Although this is a family-friendly production, the roles are best suited for adults and older teens. For more information, visit www.promiseplayers .org/auditions. such as “People,” “That’s Entertainment,” “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “With a Little Bit of Luck,” “On a Clear Day,” and “Try to Remember.” “They are great songs,” commented Hughes.

The second half will feature keyboard player Richard Fitz on Billy Joel’s “Root Beer Rag.” “St. Louis Blues,” which audience members may recall from the film “The Glenn Miller Story,” will be part of the repertoire, along with “Overture on an Early American Hymn,” which Hughes relayed is based on “My Shepherd will Supply My Need.” “It’s written by Claude T. Smith, who is big in the concert band world,” said Hughes, adding, “It does justice to the hymn in a really cool way.” The concert will conclude with Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

him to hold at least two more concerts. “One in Quarryville because we used to play there, and one in Binns Park (on North Queen Street, Lancaster),” he stated.

SAFE STORAGE LIVES Saves

Protecting children starts at home. Secure your firearms to prevent tragedy.

In Lancaster County, firearms are the leading cause of suicide death among children. Nationally, they are the number one cause of pediatric death. Even when warned, children are naturally curious—and that curiosity can be fatal. Studies show that suicide rates are four times higher in homes with firearms. But there’s something you can do: store firearms safely.

• Always keep firearms in a locked safe or lockbox.

• Ensure they are unloaded and secured.

• Store ammunition separately and securely.

• Use cable locks or gun cases to prevent unauthorized access.

637 Gault Road, Gap.

The event, hosted by For One Life and presented by Bank of Bird-In-Hand, is being held to benefit For One Life’s building projects and child sponsorship programs in northeast India. More information about For One Life can be found at www.foronelife .org and www.facebook .com/foronelife.

This year’s event will feature Paradise Road, Matt & Nimmie Band, Grace Unchained, John Schmid, Jackson Heights, The Churchmen, TruVintage, Third Fret Harmony and The Aaron Stutzman Family. “Third Fret Harmony and Paradise Road are both local bands, and it’s their first time with us,” noted Chris Straka, CEO of For One Life. “We bill it as a gospel concert. There is bluegrass and country mixed in there, but gospel describes it the best.”

This is the sixth year for the event, which takes place on the property of Merv King from King Construction in New Holland, who is a supporter of the nonprofit organization. “Last year, the total number (in attendance) was over 3,000 people,” Straka said. “It’s been growing every year. The first year we had 300. Last year was the highest attendance to date. It has

become a tradition with a lot of people.”

The event will be held rain or shine, and the musicians will perform on an outdoor stage. “We have a tent that seats 1,000 people, and the stage is under the tent. There is also seating outside; people bring their lawn chairs,” Straka explained, noting that there are smooth transitions between performers. “It is less than 10 minutes. We have a crew that is trained to do that. We fill up the time with giving away prizes (and other activities). We are efficient with our time.”

In addition to the music, there will be a large kids’ area filled with bounce houses, games and hands-on activities. All activities are provided free of charge.

There will also be a lineup of food trucks and vendors offering everything from barbecue to sweet treats. Among the food trucks scheduled to be on hand are Skip’s Food Truck, Country Smokehouse Catering, Welder’s Steak Shack, Swirls of Delight, Postal 98 Cafe, Beiler’s Pretzels, Acai Dreams, Gourmet Crepes and Hometown Candy.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn about For One Life, a nonprofit organization with a
