Cedar Grove Is Hosting a Peach of a Festival

Church is about to celebrate the uniqueness of the peach.

“Peaches are delicious,” said Kris Poontajak, who’s been Cedar Grove’s pastor for 15 years. “There will be peach pies and sliced peaches. There will be familiar faces and new faces smiling and chitchatting. They will be relaxing with goodies to eat and items to take home.”

The church’s peach festival has become an eastern Lancaster County tradition. This year, the community carnival will be conducted from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, inside and outside the church, 4833 Division Highway, East Earl.

The event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. Barb MacMaster is serving as the peach fest coordinator.

In Line of Duty, Burnell Imhoff Made Ultimate Sacrifice

New Holland is a quiet, secure, law-abiding town. But the moral of Burnell Imhoff’s story accentuates the dangerous and risky nature of police work, no matter where it is performed.

“There was crime back then, but New Holland was probably a pretty safe place,” said Mike Zimmerman, who worked as a police officer in New Holland from 1996 to 2004.

“But people were people, and crime was crime. Things did happen; things were still going on.

“New Holland was probably a smaller town at a quieter time,” Zimmerman added. “But there still was crime. Was it like it is today? No. But it still existed.”

Not everybody is a leader. But almost all of us have some leadership skills.

Leadership Lancaster’s role in the community is to uncover leadership abilities, foster them and help others to make the most of them.

“A leader is someone who sees potential in either another person or they see potential in an idea,” said Sarah Kemble, program director for Leadership Lancaster. “They kind of bring everyone together to achieve goals. It’s never about themselves. They are people who put their egos aside.”

A community nonprofit located at 115 E. King St., Lancaster, Leadership Lancaster accomplishes its mission through training, exchanges of ideas, connection and collaboration and four key programs - college core class, core class, executive class and encore class. That range of classes allows Leadership Lancaster to bring out the best in individuals, regardless of their experience or their standings in the community.

“One of the things we ask our participants is ‘When did you first consider yourself a leader?’” said Kemble. “What it boils down to is that leadership is about caring about people you’re working with in the community, realizing your own unique set of skills and wanting to contribute to something bigger than yourself. At the end of the day, it’s about being your best self and achieving something great with people.

Jesus Christ Is Working Through Ryan Forbes

Ryan Forbes is living, breathing proof that all things are absolutely possible through God. Ryan Forbes Ministries is a testimonial that God works in mysterious ways.

“I was in the top bunk of my prison cell,” said Ryan, who along with his wife, Caitlyn, founded Ryan Forbes Ministries. “I had a dream of me driving a car in a high-speed chase, and I saw a large hand coming over the car, and that was it. I had an experience with God. I was like, ‘Man, this has got to change.’ I had this pressure around me that I took to be Jesus. I went back to prison a seventh time, but there was work being done in my heart.

“What changed?” continued Ryan. “I’d say Jesus did that for me.”

“I talk about choice,” said Ryan. “You don’t know what’s going to happen, but what you do now can affect your future. My message has to do with choices. With my story, I can really make it fit with a lot of different viewers, that message of hope.”

Those happenings on June 15, 2003, marked the spiritual founding of Ryan Forbes Ministries. Since then, the journey and the process have continued, and the man and the ministry have evolved.

“We’re winning souls and providing messages that can help people overcome,” said Ryan. “I’ve met people along the way. I’m not just relegated to guys in recovery or inmates; it’s also the youth. We’re making a push to get into schools and assemblies.”

“I’m trying to find a balance between my family vision and figuring out how the ministry plays into our overall family goals,” said Ryan, a resident of Akron. “We don’t want to choose and have our kids pay for the sacrifices. That’s not the goal. The long-term goal is for me and my wife to do the ministry full-time.

“I think we are trying to turn things over to God,” continued Ryan. “That’s where the rubber meets the road. Turning things over to God is an everyday thing. If I throw jobs out, then we need to increase our ministry budget fiveor six-fold. There’s a kind of faith you have to work within. I don’t want to be irresponsible.”

After attending Garden Spot High School and securing his GED in 1999, Ryan was in and out of jail six times, initially in Lancaster County Prison and then as a part of the state’s correctional system. The charges against him included fleeing and eluding law enforcement, driving under the influence, aggravated assault and receiving stolen property.

“I was always high and drunk,” said Ryan. “Obviously, it was a letdown going in. But often times it was like this feeling of relief, like ‘It’s over. The running is finished.’ Now, looking back, I felt somewhat safe in prison knowing the boundaries.

“But, in other ways, it was a rough stay,” concluded Ryan. “It was hot, and just missing out on family and friends. You’re always walking around with your guard up. It was scary. You never knew who’s going to do what.” For additional information, go to www.ryanfor besministries.org.

Two students from New Holland were honored at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala., for their academic performance in the spring semester.

McKenzie Matters was named to the president’s list for achieving a GPA of 4.0, indicating all A’s. Brayan Martin was named to the dean’s list for earning a GPA of 3.5 or greater.

In addition to peach pies, specialty desserts, sliced peaches and pancakes with peaches, the peach festival will offer other breakfast and lunch items like egg casseroles, sausages, hamburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, free ice cream, coffee and other hot and cold beverages. There will also be a flea market, a book sale, a bake sale, children’s activities and a silent auction

Twenty percent of the proceeds from the peach fest will be donated to the nonprofit Leading in Faith & Education (LIFE), a faithbased prison ministry, and the remainder of the monies raised will benefit the church’s general fund.

Cedar Grove established its peach festival in 1999. Since then, the event has evolved into a New Holland area favorite.

“More people come to the event each year,” said Poontajak. “That means more pies to bake. Over the last few years, we added a few things, such as free children’s books and having the flea market both inside and outside the church building.”

Schulz Named to Fulton Board

Fulton Financial Corporation has announced the appointment of David S. Schulz as a member of its board of directors for a term commencing Sept. 14 and expiring at Fulton’s 2027 annual meeting of shareholders.

Promise Players Post Auditions

The Promise Players will hold auditions for the group’s fall play, “See You in Bells,” on Sunday, Aug. 23. Auditions will be held between 1 and 6 p.m. at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. The play will be performed from Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 5 to 8, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 12 to 15.

“See You in Bells” is a comedy centered on a wedding that faces numerous obstacles, including three generations of weddings with inexplicable disasters, a church building that is falling down, half the wedding party missing, and the

bride’s sisters still fighting over what happened at the last wedding. But the bride’s brother is determined to end the sisters’ feud and the family curse.

Roles are available for 16 actors: six males, six females, two teen girls, one teen boy, and a good-natured minister. Those auditioning should come prepared to read from the script, and they may arrive early to complete the audition form and look over the script selections.

Foundation Receives Funding to Expand Program

Touchstone Foundation has been awarded $255,766 through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) grant program to support the expansion and strengthening of its Rise Above program.

Launched in 2022, Rise Above was created to help eliminate stigma surrounding youth mental wellness while empowering young people with tools for resilience, self-awareness, and advocacy. The program brings mental wellness programming and youth mentorship to Lancaster County schools for students in grades seven through 12 as well as to young adults ages 18 to 26 in community groups.

The program seeks to create inclusive spaces that foster belonging, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations about mental health. One of its goals is to reduce long-term

risk factors associated with trauma and mental health challenges. Through creative expression and guided conversations, students may build emotional awareness, develop coping skills, and gain confidence to advocate for themselves and others.

The consistent presence of a caring, supportive adult is a protective factor for many childhood adversities. Supportive adult mentors can protect and buffer children from toxic stress, help children heal and build resiliency, and inspire young people to build strong relationships.

Through the recent competitive award, Rise Above will expand its reach significantly, with a goal of serving 1,120 Lancaster County students and young adults by 2029.

“We’re always looking to develop our programs,” Kemble continued. “We’re looking to get more involved with the community. We’re looking to work with nonprofits. We want people to feel more connected to communities.

Leadership is a continuous process. We’re all works in progress.”

Last year, Leadership Lancaster worked with more than 130 individuals seeking to hone their leadership skills. Those participants ranged in age from 19 to 70 - college students, working professionals and retirees - a great majority of whom either lived or worked in Lancaster County.

Leadership Lancaster operates under the tagline “Connect. Educate. Inspire.”

There are costs involved with learning in Leadership Lancaster classes.

With support in 2024 from the Lancaster County Community Foundation’s $35,000 Shaping Tomorrow Next Generation Grant, part of a broader $1 million investment into Lancaster County initiatives, Touchstone Foundation is expanding Rise Above into Lancaster County schools through school-day workshops, after-school programming, summer intensives, and community-based groups for young adults. Additional support for Rise Above was also received in 2025 from the City Limits Foundation, helping strengthen the program’s long-term impact and reach.

“The people who are coming to us are your neighbors,” said Kemble, a resident of the Manheim area. “We’re trying to have different walks of life. They are people who have moved to the United States. We’re trying to make sure we have people representing different pockets of the community. We just want to be good stewards of our community.”

Overseen by a 15-member board, Leadership Lancaster employs Kemble, executive director Jennifer Diaz and program coordinator Sage Rivera. In addition to tuition fees - some of which amount to employers covering the costs of employees’ professional development - Leadership Lancaster is funded through grants from local foundations.

“We have some really wonderful, amazing people in our community doing great things,” said Kemble. “We get to know these individuals personally. Lancaster is full of amazing people. Lancaster is such a strong place for collaboration. We are really good at working together and working toward a larger goal.”

In 1983, Leadership Lancaster was born out of a two-year initiative on volunteerism by the Junior League of Lancaster and the support of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce. Since then, the program’s more than 3,000 graduates have impacted the Lancaster County community in a variety of meaningful ways.

Bird Club Posts Field Trip, Meeting

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will offer a field trip to Clark Nature Preserve in Pequea on Saturday, Aug. 8, with a 7 a.m. start. Patti Barber, an endangered bird specialist with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, will present “Osprey: Pennsylvania’s Less Appreciated Recovery Success.” Ospreys are an incredible success story but are often overshadowed by the recovery of bald eagles and

peregrine falcons. Barber will cover the history of the osprey population in Pennsylvania and reasons for its decline and recovery. She will describe current monitoring efforts, successes, challenges, and failures, as well as the current population and distribution in the state.

Barber has studied birds on four continents. She did her master’s research on mate guarding and paternity in redfaced warblers. With the Pennsylvania Game Commission, she is responsible for the 20 threatened and endangered native birds of the state.

story, he began to do a bit of digging, a little investigating - more the kind that researchers do than the kind that cops do.

He began reading newspaper accounts of Imhoff’s untimely passing and speaking with members of his family.

“I’m sort of the unofficial historian of the New Holland police department,” said Zimmerman. “I had heard from older officers about a police officer in New Holland who was killed. I wanted to know about it, so I started digging into it. We had nothing in the police department that honored him.”

Some 87 years ago - June of 1939 to be precise - Imhoff was a police chief/police officer on New Holland’s small law enforcement force. He was responding to a fairly innocuous matter when fate intervened.

“He was a pretty hard-working chief; he made a lot of arrests, a lot of significant arrests,” said Zimmerman. “He was going down Main Street for a traffic violation. A girl went through a stop sign - they didn’t have stop lights at that time - pulls out in front of him, and he swerves around her at Main Street and Custer Avenue,

“A doctor shows up at the scene and says, ‘You’ll be OK. Go home and rest,’” continued Zimmerman.

“That night, he was rushed to St. Joe’s Hospital, and three days later he died of internal injuries.”

Imhoff was born and raised in Lititz, and he served his country as a machine gunner in World War I, where he received a Purple Heart medal due to an injury from a gas attack.

Imhoff eventually gravitated toward law enforcement and was a constable before he became a police officer.

“He wanted a patrol car,” Zimmerman added, “and (town) officials said, ‘No. You must use your own car. But we will give you a motorcycle.’”

Through his research, Zimmerman collected photos, medals, badges and memorabilia associated with Imhoff’s passing and created shadow boxes. Those shadow boxes have found their way to the New Holland Area Historical Society.

Since 1919, 14 Lancaster County police officers have died in the line of duty.

“He was a family man; he was married with three children,” said Zimmerman, a resident of Akron. “He first started out as a game warden in Clay Township. He gets into police work in New Holland and becomes the police chief. Back then, New Holland was small and it was a one-man force, it

“Most people don’t know his story,” said Zimmerman. “Some who love history probably do. People who love history research specific topics. My love of history is more police- and crime-related because I was a police officer.

“I love history,” concluded Zimmerman. “I love American history. I love local history. But my focus is crime.”

Dogs Are LKC Members’ Best Friends

For members of the Lancaster Kennel Club (LKC), dogs are more than just pets. Dogs are companions, partners, and members of the family.

One of LKC’s goals is to explore and reinvent humans’ relationships with canines.

“If you have a good bond with your dog, they will look up to you,” said Dave Martin, who’s been LKC’s president for five years. “They’ll follow you, and you have to take care of them. You can make bonds through walks and through tricks.”

LKC meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesdays of August, October, February and April at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public.

“Purebred dogs are our focus,” said Martin. “Every breed was bred for a special purpose. When dogs become pets, their purpose can be lost. We’re trying to promote purebreds, responsible dog ownership and responsible pet ownership.

“Being a good owner means making sure your dog has food, water, all of its medical needs are taken

care of and that it feels safe emotionally,” added Martin. “If you have a purebred and you realize it has a medical issue, it’s your responsibility not to breed it for the sake of money.”

LKC sponsors and conducts three dog shows each year - The Celtic Classic at the York Expo Grounds in March, the Red Rose Classic at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center in May and American Kennel Club-sanctioned Agility Trials at In The Net Sports Complex in Palmyra in October. All of those events bring together dog lovers from across the region for fellowship and competition.

LKC also holds educational community events like “Meet the Breeds” and “Responsible Pet Ownership Day.” In addition, LKC awards scholarships to students interested in the veterinary sciences and assists with the funding of local police department K-9 programs.

“We can be a community resource,” said Martin. “Say you’re looking for a particular breed. I’ll first point someone toward a member. There are plenty of opportunities to do things with dogs.”

At Life Changes, Altruism Is All in a Day’s Work

Placing people ahead of money is the model upon which Life Changes Realty Group’s business is based.

“We’re really community focused,” said Jonathan Cross, a Manheim Township resident who’s been employed by Life Changes Realty Group for two years. “It’s why I’m part of this group. It’s the reason I probably won’t sell houses for anybody else. Money comes and goes, and I’ve only got so much time in this life. The question is, ‘What am I doing with my time?’”

Life Changes Realty Group employs 22 realtors and expediates the sales of properties across Lancaster County. Adopting the company’s pay-itforward program is one of the stipulations for employment.

When a Life Changes Realty Group realtor assists with the sale of a property, he or she is compelled to donate 10% of their commission to the nonprofit of their client’s choice. The charities must have local impact and not be associated with political campaigns or politics.

“We’re not a national brand; we’re based in Lan -

“I’ve got bills too,” added Cross. “I’m not a flashy person. I’m not necessarily doing this to make big bucks. At the end of the day, it’s really satisfying giving someone keys to their first house. I help people get into their homes, and that’s very satisfying.”

“It spans the gamut,” said Cross. “There are so many great causes that I can’t name all the ones we give to, and I hadn’t heard of most of them.”

Lancaster Kennel Club, which is governed by a code of ethics. They are owners, breeders and exhibitors of purebred dogs and, for the most part, Lancaster County residents.

There are more than 60 breeds of dogs owned by LKC members.

“They’re just everyday people who love dogs,” said Martin. “Not everybody in our club is showing their dogs.”

Martin shares his Centerville-area home with two Norwich terriers, Daisy Mae and Otis.

“They’re small,” said Martin. “They’re faithful. They’re fun little dogs.”

A full voting member of the American Kennel Club, LKC can trace its origins to 1921.

“In the 1920s, it was just like-minded people coming together,” said Martin. “People showed their dogs, and some traveled. They bred purebred dogs.” For additional information, go to www.lancaster kennelclub.org.

Herb Guild Plans Meeting

The Conestoga Herb Guild will host Penn State Extension Master Gardener Colleen Emmerling on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville.

Emmerling, a Master Gardener since 2021, will demonstrate how to make a pond garden in a pot. She will discuss the various plants that can be grown successfully in a waterfilled pot to create a water feature on a deck, porch, or patio.

Her interest in gardening began with a part-time job in the perennials section of the former Funks Farm Market in Millersville.

Guild member Brenda Walker will present a talk on the Herb of the Month: stinging nettle. Refreshments will be served after a brief business meeting.
