Staffers Make Aaron’s Acres Camp Special Experience

It’s a great place for hands-on activities. It’s a great place to take a dip. It’s a great place to get outside and recreate.

New Holland Community Park is a great place to attend summer camp.

“New Holland is an amazing, welcoming community,” said Risa Paskoff, who’s been the executive director of Aaron’s Acres for 28 years. “(Borough officials) allow us to use the pavilion, the pool, the park. It’s a wonderful partnership. We have community members coming up to us and saying, ‘It’s great to see you again.’ You’re breaking down barriers and you’re connecting to make a stronger community.”

New Holland Community Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, will again provide the setting for Aaron’s Acres’ annual summer camp, the program that resulted in the founding of the organization dedicated to serving individuals with disabilities and their families. This summer will mark the fourth year that the park has hosted Aaron’s Acres’ summer camp.

The summer camp program consists of three

Diane Smith is leading her best life. It is a rich, fulfilling existence in which volunteering plays a major role - and not just because doing good and helping others is important.

Smith has the heart of a Susquehanna Valley Team River Runner, and she is following her heart.

“I think everyone has a time in their life when they might need someone or need something from someone,” said Smith. “I want to be that person who who can help,

Frank Gentile Is Running With a Purpose

Frank Gentile runs for his own fitness, recreation and mental health. But he also runs for others, people who can’t run themselves, like his father.

“When you think of having a father who died when he was 46, you start to feel shortchanged,” said Gentile. “If I can help give someone an extra 10 years and give them a chance to see their grandchildren being born or their children get married or their children graduate from college, it’s very personal to me. I think it’s just part of who I am, and I think running has helped with that transformation.”

Gentile, a 59-year-old resident of Lititz, is currently preparing to participate in the running of the 130th annual Boston Marathon on Monday, April 20. His preparations for the race include raising money as a charity runner for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and logging hundreds of miles and hours of training.

He’s motivated by intestinal fortitude, something nurtured by his father, who passed away 41 years ago in Michigan following a three-year battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

“When I got to the age of 46, I thought it was incredibly young,” said Gentile. “I wanted to prevent that from happening (to me). That’s what fuels me. (Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is) an incredibly debilitating disease. It brings tears to your eyes to see people in that condition. That’s my why.”

Gentile has already raised $10,000 toward his $25,000 goal

summer camp project.

for cancer research through the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge. Gentile has been soliciting donations from his large network of friends, family members and business associates, as well as conducting small fundraisers.

“I started running about 13 years ago,” said Gentile. “My son was asking for donations for a fundraising run. I was never a runner. When I did the race, I just about died. But I didn’t stop. I gradually built into 10Ks and half marathons. This will be my ninth marathon, and the competitiveness of me has helped me mentally. It’s become a way of life for me. Hopefully, I’ll always be able to run to stay fit. It’s a great sport, and you meet a lot of great people.”

Gentile’s training regimen for the upcoming Boston Marathon has included speed training at Warwick Middle School and Lititz recCenter, hill training, endurance training on the Lititz-to-Ephrata Rail Trail and weight training.

“It’s 16 to 20 weeks of training for a race that, for me, will hopefully be lasting four hours,” said Gentile. “It’s a lot of work for a relatively small 26 miles. With training, you have ups and downs. Sometimes you don’t

feel like doing it. One of the things I like to do when I’m running is say hi to people. Lititz is just an incredible town.”

Gentile was a freshman at Michigan State University when his father was diagnosed with blood cancer. They were already close, but the shared ordeal made father and son even closer.

“He was a great man. He was a big supporter of the community,” said Gentile. “Back then, we didn’t know a lot about cancer. It probably took a year to figure out. He did all types of chemo, but (the cancer) was too far advanced. My father was a big guy and very hardy. I think about the man I am today because of what I went through.”

“I remember being there, helping him and consoling him,” added Gentile. “There was a point in time I wasn’t sure I’d make it through college. But I think I did because of that attitude of not giving up.”

Never has Gentile run the Boston Marathon, perhaps one of the most prestigious running races in the world. In April, when he does, he expects to encounter a flood of emotions.

“You never have a good night’s rest the night before a race, but you try to stick to your routine,” said Gentile. “As the anticipation grows, you have all this energy, but you can’t go out too fast. From mile 3 to the halfway point, you’re settling in. During the second half of the race, I start to pray and I think about the people I’m running for, like my father. Over the last 6 miles or so, it becomes about heart, and the emotions start. You think about all the people who helped you along the way. That all goes through your head.”

even if it’s a small gesture. Mental health is such a big deal or should be. Being able to participate and being there for someone is very important.”

A 1995 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School, Smith notes that her altruistic spirit was nurtured growing up. Her mother fostered more than 100 children, her father served as a police officer for East Lampeter Township and her teachers and developmental learning experience in the Conestoga Valley School District inspired her.

Now as an adult, Smith’s soul for giving back has blossomed.

“I had a really fun high school experience,” said Smith. “I was in the band; I was a band geek. I was in chorus. I was big into singing and acting. We went to all the football games, and I had a lot of friends. In high school, I got into science, IT (information technology) and nursing. I feel like I learned (the importance of helping others) from my parents.”

Smith is employed as an IT support specialist at R.W. Sauder’s Eggs in Lititz. She’s been volunteering with the nonprofit Susquehanna Valley Team River Runner (SVTRR) for nearly a

decade, after being introduced to the sport of whitewater kayaking.

“I got involved with whitewater kayaking, and a year after I started, I heard about (SVTRR),” said Smith. “I started falling in love with the sport, the community, the people and everything about it. Growing up, I had some jobs in special education and working with kids. I volunteered at the Humane League when I was younger, helped walk dogs and take care of animals. I was very intrigued by the idea of rehabilitating people. That caught my eye.”

Based in Harrisburg, SVTRR is a local branch of a national organization that assists veterans, some of whom are experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and individuals with disabilities, including blindness, many of whom reside in Lancaster County. Water sports and paddle sports are just two of the tools that SVTRR employs to socially support the nearly 300 participants and encourage active and healthy lifestyles.

Some of SVTRR’s good work is performed on the Conestoga River and in the pool at the YMCA of the Roses, 265 Harrisburg Ave.,

Support Program for Pet Owners Launched

Lancaster.

“When I volunteer, I feel excited and proud,” said Smith. “I feel really excited because I want to share in (participants’) joy, like, ‘I did this thing.’ You encourage them. But they encourage me as well.”

Smith volunteers with SVTRR about 30 hours a month. One of her volunteer duties involves serving as a guide for in-water participants, some of whom are legally blind.

“It’s been like the best experience,” said Smith. “We all have safety-water training. Working with all of (the participants) has been so life changing. We’re there to help them be the best that they can be. My challenges are nothing compared to what they have on a daily basis.”

Through her involvement in water sports and SVTRR, Smith met and befriended the organization’s coordinator, Jen Eaton, and the man Smith says has become the love of her life, Greg Spath, who

also volunteers with SVTRR.

“We’re all like Susquehanna Valley Team River family,” said Smith. “I’ve made long-lasting friendships. Jen is like one of my ducklings, so I guard her and protect her, and I do that for all of (the participants). Jen’s such an inspiring person, and I gravitate toward that. Being out in nature, you get to see so many things most people don’t get to see. The people I’m with are so grateful to be there.”

During the month of March, SVTRR is partnering with City Center YMCA of the Roses to sponsor a “Stuff the Kayak” clothing drive for local nonprofit CommunityAid. New or gently used clothing can be dropped off at the lobby of YMCA of the Roses during hours of operation, Mondays through Thursdays from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Pet Care Club of Central PA has launched the Heart-to-Paw Support Program, a new non-clinical, educational service designed to help pet owners navigate the emotional and practical challenges that can arise while caring for their pets.

The program was developed in response to increasing time constraints and compassion fatigue among veterinary professionals, along with a growing recognition that pet ownership involves significant emotional labor. Heartto-Paw offers structured support for pet owners facing complex decisions, uncertainty, or stress related to their pets’ care. The program complements veterinary care without replacing clinical or medical services and is designed to be a referral-friendly resource for veterinary-adjacent professionals.

The Heart-to-Paw Support Program is now available to pet owners throughout central Pennsylvania. Veterinary practices and pet care professionals may refer clients seeking additional non-clinical support resources.

There’s this positivity. It’s a magical place because the staff is engaged with the kids and the kids are engaged with us.”

Among the activities and opportunities that campers and staff members can enjoy are daily swimming, music therapy, arts and crafts, a petting zoo, a magician, a ventriloquist, nature activities and special theme days. The only activity not conducted at the park is the camp’s field trip to Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center.

“I think the best part is seeing the staff and camper interactions,” said Paskoff. “I love seeing the smiles and joy. So many parents say they don’t see those smiles all the time. The last day of camp, the counselors and campers are crying, and it’s so powerful.”

Aaron’s Acres summer camp is designed for individuals between ages 5 and 21 with cognitive, behavior and medical disabilities. The camp mostly serves individuals from across Lancaster County, but also from Dauphin, Berks, Lebanon,

(New Holland/Earl Twp. Area)

Perry and Cumberland counties.

“They’re kids who are hoping to have fun and looking to do something over the summer,” said Paskoff. “Some may not have been accepted by other programs. You have kids who want to be like everybody else, and at Aaron’s Acres, they can be like everybody else.”

“They’re developing their communication and social skills,” Paskoff continued. “During the school year, they’re making strides in these areas, and we’re helping them to not regress. They’re learning transition, and they’re having new experiences. There are so many advantages to summer camp.”

About 120 individuals are expected to attend the summer camps. Because Aaron’s Acres maintains 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 staff member-to-camper ratios, the program is limited in the number of participants it can accept.

Last year, the waiting list for Aaron’s Acres summer camps was about 90 kids.

“We don’t accept kids until we have the staff,” said Paskoff. “There’s a tremendous need for this type of program over the summer. The summer camp program has to happen for these families. We need the community to help us make it happen. Parents can breathe when they know their kids are going to Aaron’s Acres.”

That interaction between counselors and campers can produce experiences that are both more

enjoyable and more impactful.

“Because there’s that low ratio, kids get personal attention, and the child feels really safe and secure,” Paskoff said. “They get individual attention, and the counselors aren’t overwhelmed. There’s a lot of help, support and guidance. The staff is what makes this program special. If we don’t have the staff, we’re not doing it the Aaron’s Acres way.”

Aaron’s Acres, which recently moved its headquarters to 121 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, was formed from a summer camp conducted at the Lancaster Jewish Community Center in 1998. Today, the summer camp is one of nine programs Aaron’s Acres offers for individuals with disabilities between ages 5 and 40.
