Allison Cuthie has the head, the heart and the motivation to make a difference. As for the resources, that’s CrossNet Ministries’ area of expertise.
It’s a match made in nonprofit heaven.
“This is actually a dream job of mine,” said Cuthie. “It’s a faith-based ministry. We function on donations from the community. We’re serving people where they are. I feel super grateful to be working alongside some great people.”

On Dec. 15 of last year, Cuthie officially became CrossNet Ministries’ new executive director. She took the reins of the multilayered, multifaceted nonprofit headquartered in a renovated
warehouse at 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, from Carl Edwards.
“I believe our staff is working hard to address as much as they can,”
said Cuthie. “I come from an education background. I have respect for the dignity of life. I’d like to see us move in the direction of more

The cooking program at the Ephrata Public Library (EPL) teaches a critical life skill and important life lessons. But on a more symbolic level, the educational classes represent the Ephrata library’s continuing growth as a community institution.
There was a time, seemingly not that long ago, when eating was forbidden in libraries or at least discouraged.
“Libraries are more than just four walls and the books that line them,” said Helen Taylor, who’s been EPL’s program manager for five years. “Libraries have evolved. Now we deal more with programs. Libraries are not quiet or monotonous anymore. We’re more of community hubs. It’s hard to keep up with us. We’re constantly innovating and changing.”

The Arc Lancaster Lebanon’s goal is to empower and improve the lives of residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. The Arc executes its mission and achieves its goals by advocating for and educating the families of individuals with disabilities.
It’s both a grassroots and holistic approach that focuses on the importance of home and relationships.
“Where I really see the empowerment is through education and being a resource center for people who are gaining

EPL conducts five cooking programs for both children and adults - Story Snackers for preschoolers and their parents; I Can Cook, designed for elementary students ages 6 to 9 with a focus on nutrition and completing recipes; Teen Cuisine, which provides instruction on main dishes, the preparation of meats and the importance of food temperatures; Adult Cooking Class, which incorporates the assistance of outside restaurant experts for the preparation of sandwiches and salads; and Cookbook Club, whose members take recipes home, prepare dishes and then share them with class members.

The 11th Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack will be held Friday, March 20, through Sunday, March 22, at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street.
to be able to volunteer, as well as the idea that the food that they are packing, the next people who will touch it are those in need,” Mangus Wenger said. “You’re really making a very direct, positive contribution to someone’s life.”
FMSC accepts volunteers as young as 5 years old. “One of (FMSC’s) taglines is ‘all ages and all abilities,’” said Mangus Wenger. “We have opportunities for people who need to sit. We can find a job for pretty much anyone of any ability.”
For more information, email Mangus Wenger at lmw4fmsc@gmail.com or call the church at 717-464-2422.
“The food through this organization is distributed around the world to those most in need,” said Mangus Wenger. “Feed My Starving Children, since 1987, has distributed more than 4 billion meals to more than 100 countries.”

Packing shifts will be held Friday, March 20 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, March 21, from 9 to 11 a.m., noon to 2 p.m., 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and 5 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 22, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. “Some shift times are more popular than others and fill quickly,” said Lora Mangus Wenger, who is the FMSC Lancaster County MobilePack chairperson. Every individual who signs up for a packing shift is asked to contribute a minimum of $63. “This covers the cost of one box of packed meals (216 meals), which is the average amount a single volunteer packs in a two-hour period,” Mangus Wenger said. “Basically, we encourage everyone to donate as they’re able. Whether a person can contribute 29 cents or $290, we welcome you to participate.” Registrations will be taken starting Friday, Feb. 6, and will be accepted up until the day people participate. Go to https://tinyurl.com/ 2vezzzj9 to sign up.

Last year, the locally packaged food was sent to Malawi, the Dominican Republic, and Peru. “It is so important to me because, unfortunately, there’s an ongoing, huge need,” said Mangus Wenger. “It’s not that there’s not enough food in the world, but it’s not distributed in an even manner to everyone around the world, so there’s still a lot of people in the world who are malnourished or underfed.”

If it is your first time to register for a FMSC event, you will need to set up a username and password to register as an individual or for your group. Go to https:// www.fmsc.org/# and click “Log In.” Once you set up an account, click on “Volunteer,” then reserve the number of spots you will need for your

A pediatrician, Mangus Wenger is especially aware of the impact on the younger members of the world’s population. “Specifically, as far as children are concerned, it’s so vital that they get good nutrition during the first two to five years of their life, because that’s when their brain is developing a lot,” she said. “It has a very long-term effect if they don’t get adequate nutrition at a young age.”
Everyone who attends is also asked to bring a nonperishable food item that will

be donated to the Lancaster Food Hub. “We also are concerned about local food insecurity,” said Mangus Wenger. “As a community, this is a great opportunity to help meet this need both locally and globally.”
Volunteers packed 400,000 meals last year.
“Because the need is so
great, this year we’re making a goal of packing 500,000 meals with the help of 2,000 volunteers from the community and raising $147,000 to cover the cost of the meals we are packing,” said Mangus Wenger. “Every person and penny is needed to help us reach our goal.”
The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) will offer an educational program, “Lancaster County and America 250: A Local Story of Independence,” on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity
Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata.
Georgette Hackman will present on the untold stories of Lancaster County’s Revolutionary roots. Through storytelling and visuals, this talk will
explore how Lancaster County helped to shape the nation.
The program is free and open to the public. The parking lot and entrance are accessible via the alley behind the church. For more information, visit www.cocalicovalleyhs .org or call 717-733-1616. early childhood education. I have a passion for helping people who aren’t native to our community.”
In her new role, Cuthie is charged with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the organization, handling staffing and strategizing its future direction. Cuthie also answers to CrossNet’s board of directors, serves as the face of the organization to the community, manages finances and ensures compliance to laws and standards.
“Our mission is intentional, and I can align with it really well,” said Cuthie, a resident of Mount Gretna. “It’s about providing help and hope and empowering the ELANCO community. We exist to offer help and hope in the name of Jesus Christ in the ELANCO community. We’re building relationships to see if we can move people toward Jesus.”
Employing a four-pillar approach consisting of community, food and nutrition, youth and social services, CrossNet Ministries serves the needs of the residents of the ELANCO School District in myriad ways. Among the ministry’s most popular services are community programs; youth, education and tutoring programs; a food pantry; a transportation ministry;
The Ephrata Cloister Toastmasters Club recently gathered for its annual holiday banquet and food drive at the Olde Lincoln House restaurant. The attendees enjoyed fellowship as they shared stories that inspired laughter and reflection. This year, proceeds from the food drive were donated to the Lititz Warwick Community Chest to support local needs.
Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills. The Ephrata club is one of a worldwide network of more than 13,800 Toastmasters clubs in 150 countries. Since 1924, Toastmasters has sought to help
Bible studies; free meals and food programs; homelessness prevention and housing programs; and mentoring.
“I want to work myself out of a job,” said Cuthie. “If I don’t have a job, it means we’ve eradicated poverty in the ELANCO School District. The bottom line is if we can assess your needs, we can walk alongside you and provide hope.”
Cuthie’s staff consists of 14 employees and a roster of 650 volunteers. CrossNet Ministries is primarily funded through community donations, but the organization does receive grants, as well as assistance from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.
CrossNet serves thousands of local individuals and families each year, many of whom qualify for free or reduced-cost meals within the ELANCO School District. CrossNet Ministries is sponsored by and partners with 78 churches and 175 businesses.
In early October of 2025, CrossNet Ministries expanded its reach and mission to its current location. With the addition of its new property, CrossNet now has 40,000 square feet of more offices, a larger youth center and a better-equipped kitchen and nutrition center with which to work.
“(The expansion) allowed us to say yes to more donations,” said Cuthie. “There’s also some room to
grow. Putting staff under one roof allows for better communication and interaction. It’s just a greater space. We have some empty space, and it means we’re going to be able to serve in ways we never have before.”
CrossNet Ministries was formed in 2017 through the merger of Cross Creation Youth Center and the ELANCO Social Services Network.
“It’s grown exponentially as far as the number of people we serve,” said Cuthie. “It started with a part-time director, and they kept adding staff to serve the different pillars. Also, the amount of support from the community has increased.”
Prior to becoming CrossNet’s executive director, Cuthie worked at Garden Spot Communities and Garden Spot Village for eight years. She is a graduate of Garden Spot High School and has a degree in English education from West Chester University.
“I enjoy work, I like being engaged with people and I tend to gravitate toward need,” said Cuthie. “My personality has always been one that would connect with people’s needs. I always thought I’d work in some role where I could be very close to serving other people’s needs. That’s what inspired me to be in this position.”

The New Holland Lions Club will hold a food drive on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Yoder’s Country Market, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland.
Collected food will be donated to the CrossNet Ministries food pantry.
The club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at Yoder’s Restaurant, and new members are invited to join.

Veritas Academy is in the growth business, and business is booming.
It’s the type of growth that could be characterized as development. It’s the type of growth that originates from within. It’s the kind of growth that is fostered in a healthy environment.
“When God gives growth, you’ve got to recognize that,” said Ty Fischer, who’s been the head of school at Veritas Academy for 29 years. “Here at Veritas, our effort has been toward the mission of growing and cultivating students. We have seen growth, and at the core of that growth is an exceptional faculty. What we’re doing is preparing these young men and women to respond to callings and take God with them.”
Veritas Academy’s current expansion project will provide the classical Christian school with greater abilities to provide better educational opportunities to more students from preschool to 12th grade. After Veritas Academy doubled its student population over the last seven years, the school is now doubling the size of its learning space at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola.
Veritas Academy conducted an official groundbreaking ceremony for its $7 million expansion project on Jan. 20. A few days earlier, the project experienced a soft opening in the form of some initial excavating.
The expansion project is expected to be completed by the beginning of the 2026-27 school year.
“This expansion is not just about numbers,” said Fischer. “Everything we do here harkens back to the Bible and a classical Christian education. What this expansion will allow us to do is more fully form our students. In that formation, we want them to have those skills from a classical liberal arts education.”

knowledge on being a part of the community,” said Abby Morris, executive director of The Arc. “That’s what our hope is. We at The Arc feel that every person deserves the same rights that you and I have. We get to choose what we eat and where we want to work. Everyone in America deserves to have those rights. Sometimes the most vulnerable part of the population isn’t seen from that light. We want to champion for them.”
Headquartered at 116 W. Airport Road, Suite A,
Lititz, The Arc Lancaster Lebanon is open Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Fridays by appointment. The Arc Lancaster Lebanon, which conducts support events at its office and out in the community, employs resources from The Arc of Pennsylvania and The Arc of the United States and collaborates with similar local service agencies.
“I want people to know we’re here,” said Morris. “We want to help, and we’re a free service. People should not be navigating
(disabilities) alone. We provide advocacy and family support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. We want to be the voice of people with disabilities.”
Overseen by a board of directors, The Arc sponsors happenings, activities and programs like sensory-sensitive community events, an Arc Angel giving tree, seasonal parties and a sensory-friendly Easter egg hunt. The Arc Lancaster Lebanon also conducts educational and support groups for siblings and parents of family members with disabilities.
are fearful their children are not receiving the proper schooling. It’s 78-year-olds who are still taking care of their children. It’s a whole spectrum.”
The Arc Lancaster Lebanon employs four full-time workers and two part-timers. The local nonprofit also benefits from the assistance of volunteers at community events.
The Arc is funded through contracts with Lancaster and Lebanon counties, a membership program, grants, personal and private donations and fundraising efforts.

“We want to empower young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism to lead a full and independent life of their choice,” said Morris. “That looks different for everybody. We have an advocate and a family support specialist who work individually with each person. They come alongside their families to make sure their needs are being met.”
The Arc Lancaster Lebanon is currently serving more than 100 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across all of its programs. They reside in Lancaster and Lebanon counties and range from elementary school children to adults in their 60s.
“They go to public schools, they go to your places of worship, they’re your next-door neighbors,” said Morris. “Those are all the people we are working with. We help parents who
“I feel very passionate about meeting and talking to (state) legislators about why the work we’re doing with people with disabilities should be in the budget,” said Morris. “We want to work with legislators and educate them. We’re wanting to bring people together and continue to get the message out.”
The Arc of the United States was founded in the 1950s, and the local branch was established in Lancaster in 1978. The Arc Lancaster Lebanon is one of 33 chapters in Pennsylvania.
“When our most recent executive director, Maureen (Westcott), retired last year, she knew The Arc needed to go in a new direction,” said Morris. “That’s what I’ve been tasked to do. I want to build up our development and enrich the great work that was already being done.”

In addition, EPL hosts cooking camps for students during the summer months. Periodically, EPL also sponsors Taco Tuesdays, cotton candy art and pancake art.
All classes related to the cooking programs are conducted in EPL’s educational kitchen, located at 550 S. Reading Road, Ephrata.
“Cooking and working in the kitchen is something we all need,” said Taylor. “We have a lot of students who want a snack when they get home from school. It’s about independence and gaining confidence. It’s also learning about recipes. A lot of these skills are going to be used for the rest of (students’) lives. For some, it may be a career. It’s also about self-esteem; for them, projects can be accomplishments. We’re mixing in a lot of life lessons.”
Most of EPL’s cooking programs, which are free and open to the public, are conducted monthly, while some are held less often. The age-appropriate classes, which are limited to 10 to 12 participants because of space, focus on different dishes and separate aspects of working in a kitchen each time.
In 2025, EPL cooking program staged 36 classes and served 432 participants.
“I come into classes as an observer and watch the start of classes,” said Taylor. “My favorite thing is just seeing the joy that comes from all the students, just watching their

interactions and seeing how happy their accomplishments make them. There’s joy being spread and there’s determination, and you can see that in all ages; that’s what makes me happy. We’re teaching, we’re directing, but we’re also spreading joy.”
From time to time, EPL’s cooking program incorporates the use of its Charlie Cart Mobile Kitchen to take its educational classes out into the community. Purchased with funds from a grant, the Charlie Cart is a kitchen on wheels, equipped with a power source, a sink, appliances, utensils, bowls, plates and knives.
“Cooking also promotes basic literacy because you’re reading recipes,” said Taylor. “It’s also basic-level STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). It’s civic and social literacy because you need teamwork. You could say it’s financial literacy

because we look at costs involved with making dishes. We incorporate all of these literacies, which are all so important. Cooking is fun and we love to eat, but there are so many other skills involved with it.”
EPL conducts a number of programs for adults and children in addition to its cooking classes, including game nights, camps, clubs and special events. Between January and November of 2025, EPL hosted 721 live in-house programs and welcomed 8,248 visitors.
“Sometimes, people are surprised by the programs we offer,” said Taylor. “Every day I surprise someone at the library, even our regulars, because we offer so much.”
EPL is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information, go to www .ephratapubliclibrary.org.

“We love our building,” added Fischer. “The great thing is that our architects

campaign and construction campaign we’ve done at the school. We received a lot of feedback from donors, and the last 10% was the public phase of the campaign. A
lot of the giving was in the quiet phase of the plan. All glory be to God. He used the generosity of the community to make it possible. As we faithfully went out to our community, God opened so many hearts to make this possible.”
Currently, there are 409 students enrolled at Veritas Academy. The majority of that student population hails from the Conestoga Valley, Ephrata, ELANCO, Manheim Township, Warwick and Hempfield school districts.
“Veritas is here to meet a need,” said Fischer. “It’s a need that I think all communities have. We want to form young men and women in the image of Christ. One of the greatest distinctions of
our school is just the joyfulness. We want to produce students our community can be proud of. We want the joy in the building to flow into Leola and the greater Lancaster County community.”
Veritas Academy, which was formally established 30 years ago, employs 53 staff members, more than 40 of whom are teachers. The school receives funding from tuition, the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit program and community donations.
“We’re a younger school,” said Fischer. “From the beginning, we thought we were doing good work. Now, we have a good track record. Not only do we talk a good game, we have proof. What’s happened over time is that the mission and vision haven’t changed at all. God has actually grown us up.”
