Window Shopping For The Holidays BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Window shopping will take on a whole new meaning in Elizabethtown this month. Stores throughout the downtown will be participating in a window decorating contest, and a new Win the Window event will provide local prizes to one lucky winner. “We are setting up a window in an empty storefront at 48 S. Market St., and local businesses are donating items or gift cards which we are going to display in the window,” said Emily Drobnock, owner of Knock Knock Boutique. “People will pick up entry tickets at the businesses who have donated items, and there will be a drop box outside the window for tickets.” The Win the Window contest will kick off Saturday, Dec. 5, and entries will be accepted until Wednesday, Dec. 30. No purchase is necessary to enter, and the winner will receive everything in the window. The winner will be announced at Elizabethtown’s New Year’s Eve festivities on Thursday, Dec. 31, Drobnock noted.

“This is the first year we’re doing Win the Window,” Drobnock remarked. “It was the idea of Bob Price, our new Chamber director. He wanted to do something to get people out to support local businesses.” At press time, 11 businesses were participating in Win the Window, with a total prize value of almost $700. Along with Win the Window, storefronts in Elizabethtown will be decorated as part of an annual contest held by the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce. The theme of this year’s contest is “Christmas in My Hometown.” Prizes will be awarded for the first-, second- and third-place windows, along with a People’s Choice Award. “We want people to vote for their favorite on social media,” Drobnock said. So, the 16-yearold junior at Lancaster Mennonite High School created a butterfly garden at Kraybill Mennonite School in Mount Joy, where he attended from kindergarten through eighth grade, as his Eagle Scout project. For his project, he renovated an unused, rundown courtyard into a space designed to be both attractive

That’s the philosophy behind Lifecycles, a Wrightsville-based organization that works to build young men and women of character. “We combine mentoring and a spiritual aspect with a vehicle that brings people together, which is longdistance cycling,” said Lee DeRemer, Boys and girls ages 12 to 18 are invited to join Lifecycles, an organization that combines faith-based mentoring with long-distance cycling.

and educational. “I turned it into a butterfly garden for the students and teachers to be able to relax and enjoy nature while still being at school and so that they could use it for educational purposes as well,” he explained. “They were able to use it for education shortly after it was completed as they watched monarch butterflies hatch and discussed their

lifecycle.” Matthew started his project in early June and finished it in late August. He said the idea for the garden came to him as a way to reflect on his years at Kraybill. “I came up with this idea by thinking about what Kraybill had meant to me growing up,” he stated. “I had spent nine years of my life there ... and thought it was a special school and special place both because of the learning environment and because of how close my class was during that time. I made some lifelong friends and was well-prepared for high school.” Matthew, who is the son of Patrick and Beth Sampsell of Elizabethtown, completed his project with help from his family, which includes his older brother, Nicholas, as well as friends and his troop members from Boy Scout

Troop 117 in Elizabethtown. He had to raise his own funds for the project and collected about $1,700, which was paired with donations from community businesses including JB Hostetter & Sons. He passed his Eagle Board of Review in October but has not had his Eagle ceremony yet due to COVID-19.

He hopes to have the ceremony in the spring. “I enjoyed the opportunity to complete this project,” Matthew said. “It was a lot of work, but just knowing that the kids are already using it, and watching the short video that they prepared thanking me, makes it worthwhile.”

from the physical challenge of riding, as well as the opportunity for spiritual growth and social support, he said. “We meet the teens where they are,” he explained. “We don’t focus on troubles at home or school. There are other people in their lives for that. We want to build a positive and encouraging environment for them.” The organization has grown over the years primarily by word of mouth, DeRemer said, and the opportunities for riders have grown as well. This past summer, a group of nine boys and four leaders had planned to participate in a 3,800-mile ride from Oregon to Maine. Although the experience was postponed due to the pandemic, it has been rescheduled for the summer of 2021. DeRemer emphasized that Lifecycles is open to anyone who is interested. “Everything is provided for the teens—bikes, helmets, shirts, water bottles,” he said. “The teens pay nothing. JOHN ROY BOOK (ROY) John Roy Book (Roy), 87, born May 16, 1933 in Walker Twp., Mifflintown, PA, passed on Saturday, November 21, 2020. He was the husband of the late Patricia (Shull) Book, son of the late Cleon Book and Helen (Book) Weaver, brother of the late Robert Book, and grandson of the late George W. Book and Agnes (Book) Isenberg and J. Harvey and Anna Noss. Roy is survived by his children, Jeane Marie Oellig, wife of Dean of Grantville, Cynthia Jane Thompson, wife of the late Kenneth Thompson of Quakertown, Karen Ann Elofsky, wife of Thomas of Middletown, John Roy Book, Jr., husband of Terri of Hummelstown, Charles Clayton Book, husband of Julia of Palmyra and Barry George Book, husband of Lorie of Bainbridge; 22 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, five sister-in-laws, and many, many nieces and nephews. Roy and his family moved to Piketown in 1944 after a fire on their farm, where he attended Forney School, (oneroom school) and graduated from Lower Paxton High School in 1951. After high school, Roy entered the Navy- starting at Norfolk, to Memphis, finished his training at Quonset Point, Rhode Island and served on two aircraft carriers, USS Lady and USS Antietam. After the Navy, Roy and Pat moved back to Piketown and started farming and has farmed ever since as farming was in his blood and he knew he wanted to farm from the age of five – that is what he always told his children. Roy was an “Oliver” tractor man, following his dad’s footsteps. He settled for John Deere after there were no more Olivers. Roy loved farming, especially the cows. After moving to Londonderry Twp., Roy milked cows for another 34 years. He loved to share whatever he could with others and was always appreciative of his neighbors. He loved his family very much, and enjoyed when family would visit for Monday Night gatherings, family birthdays, holiday picnics and anytime to visit the farm. Roy was a member of Word of Life Chapel, Bainbridge since 1975, enjoying the Scofield Bible Classes, actively participating on the Missions Committee, taught the College-Age Sunday School class for a while and was part of the Elder Board. Roy loved to be part of mission trips, whenever he could go. He went to Albania and Bolivia, more than once, served at Camp Victory, AL and Camp Nathaniel, KY. Roy also served with Youth For Christ, helping with the Lifeline Camps that took young boys from Harrisburg city to the woods of New York to spend time and share the gospel with them. His family knew that he was always looking for ways to serve the Lord. He is most noted for always carrying a small New Testament in his vest pocket, which did get washed occasionally in the laundry, but he always had a spare one, ready to be used to share the gospel. He loved to ask strangers, after a healthy handshake, so, “Where do you put Jesus Christ in your life”? and the rest is history. So, if you drove in the farm lane to ask to go fishing on one of the ponds, you would hear the gospel first before getting the okay to go fishing. Roy loved to pray and visit different folks, who were part of the congregation and he loved to pray and keep up on all the happenings on the mission field. A private family viewing at Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc. and private Interment at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens was held on Friday, November 27, 2020, and there will be a Celebration Service in 2021 to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested in honoring dad’s wish that memorial contributions be sent to Word of Life Chapel, Bainbridge, PA 17502 for Missions. He sees the group as a way to reach teens through a unique avenue. “Teens get talked at an awful lot, so we try to do something different,” he noted. “We listen a lot. We’ll have a short talk while we’re stretching and getting ready to ride, and we’ll hit them with some good ideas to think about. Those ideas will bounce around in their heads while they are riding for the next hour and a half.” Teenagers tend to open up during the silence and great things can start happening, he said. “The teens start talking so now you know what’s on their mind rather than sharing what you think matters to them,” he explained. “You’ll find teens have a lot to share.” DeRemer and his wife, Marcie, incorporated Lifecycles in 2014. The program is open to youths ages 12 to 18, and graduates are encouraged to stay on as mentors. Participants in the faith-based program benefit

Chargers Earn District and CCAC Championships

During their 2020 fall season, Lady Chargers volleyball reinstated their claim on both the CCAC conference and PIAA District III 1A, winning both championship games for the first time since 2016. In a season full of uncertainty, the club set some lofty goals and their tenacity paid off as they capped an undefeated regular season (15-0 without dropping a single game) with the pair of titles and punched a ticket to the State playoffs for the fourth time in school history. The whirlwind season came to a close in the quarterfinals of the State tournament on November 14, experiencing their first and only loss, a 3-2 defeat from Sacred Heart Academy. The contest couldn’t have been decided on a slimmer margin, extending all the way to five games with MC slipping, 17-15, in the final set (25-21, 27-25, 21-25, 21-25, 1715). November 10th marked the District III championship win over Lititz Christian, 3-1 (25-10, 25-17, 21-25,

25-14). The showdown was made even more intense, due to the Chargers having just overcome the Lititz Eagles 11 days earlier for the CCAC championship. The 3-0 sweep on October 30th made Lititz eager for redemption, yet again it was the Chargers who prevailed. “We knew when we faced Lititz in Districts that they would come back even stronger than when we played for the [CCAC] championship, and that turned out to be very evident,” noted co head coach Kate Ferrari. “I was proud to see our girls rise to the challenge.” Encountering a bit more competition in their CCAC playoff journey, the Lady Chargers advanced with a 3-1 victory over Veritas on October 28, to head into the championship contest against Lititz Christian on the 30th. The MC talent isn’t exclusive to upper classmen. While senior veterans Kami Mummau (233 kills, 176 digs) and Kara Locker (70 aces) were predictably named to the CCAC all conference first team, two freshmen made their varsity debut look anything but a rookie season. As important as the on-court successes are, the team’s emphasis on character development was just as strong, repeating the mantra “no excuses” throughout the season. “We didn’t mean we expected perfection, but just that if we made mistakes, we don’t excuse it, we learn from it, we grow,” elaborated Ferrari. “They know it’s not for their glory that they play, but for God’s. I think that really helped them to come together as a team because no one was focused on their own personal achievements over the teams’.” Three seniors will graduate this year, each known for contributing in different ways to the team’s closeknit dynamic. In addition to their talents on the court, Coach Ferrari expounded on how the team will miss Locker’s encouragement, Rachel Green’s joy and humor, and Mummau’s focus and determination. GIRLS’ SOCCER After a 13-1 regular season, the Lady Chargers soccer team went on

to bring home the CCAC conference title for the fifth time in the past six years, as well as make an appearance in the District III 1A finals. The CCAC title game was played on October 31 at Exeter Township High School, and was decided by a lone goal supplied by freshman Ella Webb (27 goals, 12 assists) to clinch the 1-0 victory over the West Shore Christian Bobcats. On their journey to the championship, Mount Calvary blanked Harrisburg Christian, 2-0, on October 27th, with sophomores Lilli Knudson and Breanna Winters handling the scoring. “We’ve developed several different attacking threats which has made it difficult for other teams to shut us down,” noted head coach Kim Schmitkons. “This team has some very skilled players and we have been building steadily through the season learning to work together as more of a unit.” Guarding the goal for both playoff contests was MC keeper Marley Neidwick, and the pair of shutouts brought her season total to 10 along

The team came up just short in their District III playoff quest, taking home silver medals after falling to Fairfield High School in the final match, 3-0, on November 10th. MC’s semi-final showdown was an exciting and high-scoring affair, surpassing York Catholic 7-3 on November 7th. Though the contest was knotted at two apiece midway through the first half, the Chargers got a second wind and pulled away in a scoring surge showcasing a hat trick of goals from Webb, a pair from Julia Martin, and one apiece from Winters and Alivia Rutt. “The girls stepped up their level of play and gave their best effort resulting in some really good connecting play and team defense,” credited Schmitkons. On October 8th, Martin surpassed a milestone never before reached in MCCS varsity girls’ soccer history, netting her 100th career goal in an away contest at West Shore Christian. She racked up a total of 114 before the season came to a close. “I am so excited to have achieved this milestone that I have worked so hard for, and it would not have been possible without the support of my amazing teammates and coaches over the past four years,” celebrated Martin. The club celebrated five all conference selections, with Martin and Abigail Yordy named to the first team, and Webb, Ruth Hynum and Lauren Enterline receiving second-team recognition. They will also say goodbye to seniors Martin, Olivia Yordy, and Lea Lin, a trio whose leadership and skill will not be easily replaced. Amongst the ups, downs, and hurdles of the 2020 season, the club never lost sight of their team theme,

Though the outlook on the season was uncertain at best, Coach Schmitkons challenged her team to embrace each obstacle that presented itself. “In Districts the team played their best games of the season. They showed they were still capable of growing and improving, and we’re looking forward to seeing that happen in the future.” BOYS’ SOCCER MC boys soccer powered through an undefeated regular season (12-01) to advance to the CCAC finals before falling, 1-0, to Harrisburg Christian on October 31st. Four days prior, Damian Rutt’s goal in the first round of playoffs lifted the squad to a 1-0 victory over Conestoga Christian on October 27th, earning their appearance in the CCAC title game. The Chargers’ season efforts also earned them a PIAA District III playoff berth in which they bowed out in a semi-final loss to Tulpehocken, 2-0, closing their season on November 7th. Rutt’s scoring contributions were a crucial aspect of the team’s seasonlong success, accruing 15 goals and 13 assists. Sophomore, Brett Taylor, created another offensive angle for the Chargers, garnering 10 goals and seven assists. MC’s regular season contained eight shutouts, largely thanks to a formidable back line and strong keeper, sophomore Reagan Mummau, who gathered 38 saves. Wyatt Lamb, a junior, anchored the defensive line that bolstered the squad, and two sophomore’s Brandon Zeager and Braden Esbenshade, placed in defensive midfield positions, gave the club invaluable contributions on both ends of the field. Twice during the regular season, once against High Point Baptist and then against West Shore, the club found themselves in a 3-0 deficit headed into the final minutes of regulation, and both times the Chargers

Jordan Weaver played two years on the golf team in addition to lending his talents to the Yearbook committee. Coach Owlett pointed out Weaver’s improvement in the sport as well as the fun and comradery he brought to the team. Hayden Merrick, a four-year player who also is a member of choir, National Honor Society and Yearbook, will be remembered for his sense of humor and growth in leadership pointing others to follow the Lord. Hunter Stewart, a three-sport athlete and class VP, has contributed some of the best numbers for the golf team as well as showing a fun-loving, team-first mentality. Athletic programs continue to prove that facing adversity can bring about the greatest growth, and to say that 2020 has presented obstacles is an understatement. Yet, despite those challenges young athletes also continue to prove they are able and willing to rise to the occasion. “I am so proud of our athletic staff, coaches, and most importantly our players for their perseverance during a very unique fall season,” commented Mount Calvary Athletic Director, Jared Griest. “Not only were we able to complete a full season without any cancellations, but all of our teams combined to compete at a level that we have never experienced before.”

regrouped to battle back to an outstanding 4-3 triumph. “Our VB soccer regular season has been one of MCCS best and we have battled against some tough opponents,” explained coach Marc Myers. “The boys have demonstrated their spirit, hard work, and teamwork as we need every single player to be successful.” Taylor and Rutt were both named to the CCAC first team all-conference team, and Zeager and Lamb received second team honors. Next season, the team will miss the presence of their lead scorer, Rutt, and fellow senior Dane Kelley who was described by Coach Myers as an example of hard work and dedication. While their leadership will be missed, their examples have left a lasting impression on the returning crew. GOLF Charger golf reminded us that wins and losses are not the only indicator of growth when it comes to athletics, as the team persevered through competitions, pushing themselves to grow in both skill and character. “The season did not see much success in the win column,” said head coach Matt Owlett. “But we certainly improved as a team. Most importantly, we honored God with our attitudes and efforts and had an incredibly fun time together.” Though unable to clinch a team win, in their final match at Millersburg the MC club shaved off 30 strokes from their previous collective best, and Hunter Stewart and Hayden Merrick finished their high school golf career with personal best rounds. When Jennifer Allen and her husband, Phillip, adopted a baby in 2017, they didn’t know their lives would change in more ways than they could imagine. “My middle son has spina bifida,” said Allen. “He can’t feel from his knees down. … We didn’t know he had a disability until we were picking him up in China.” Jaden, 4, uses crutches to walk short distances and relies on a wheelchair for longer trips. Watching her son try to navigate the world with a disability inspired Allen to create Wonders Within Reach, a travel website and blog focused on travel resources for families with disabilities. Her blog, which she launched in February of 2019, was recently named in the top 10 internationally for disability travel blogs by Feedspot, which curates and ranks blogs in niche categories. Allen, who lives in Elizabethtown and is also the mother of Wesley, 8, and Nella, 4, was a lifelong traveler before having children and has visited places around the world. She

She got the idea for Wonders Within Reach after thinking about launching an Instagram account focused on family travel. She soon realized that although there were lots of accounts like that, something was missing. “None of the families looked like mine,” she noticed. “You don’t see a lot of families with disabilities out traveling. You tend to see other families like yours at physical therapy or at the hospital. Elizabethtown Rotary Club is holding its annual Christmas tree sale in the parking lot of Giant Food Store, 1278 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. Family Scavenger Hunt Scheduled Neighbors Group Plans Meeting The Middletown Holiday Home Tour Planning Committee will hold a Holiday Scavenger Hunt at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, and Sunday, Dec. 6. The hunt will be a COVID-19 safe family holiday event. The scavenger hunt is self-guided, and each family can choose the number of participants. The scavenger hunt will send participants traveling through the Borough of Middletown, either by automobile or by foot, to hunt for items

on a prepared list. During the scavenger hunt, participants will also be able to enjoy Middletown’s historic homes, holiday lights, and holiday decorations displayed by residents. The nominal cost of a scavenger hunt kit will include a map showing the general area of the scavenger hunt, a list of items to find and check off, a blank certificate for the person completing the scavenger hunt, and some holiday treats. All proceeds will benefit the RaidersPack Program, which
