A Flower Club That Keeps Blooming BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“On April 4th, 1935, at the home of Mrs. Lizzie Foltz in Deodate, a group of women interested in gardening … met to form a Flower Club.” So begins a “History of The Little Flower Club,” written by a member of the Elizabethtown Flower Club. That small group of women has grown into a club that is still going strong, although there is some discrepancy about the club’s exact origins. “We are celebrating 80 years, but in researching the club’s history we discovered that the inception of the club began in 1935, which is 91 years ago,” said president Cindy Wivell. “We may have to decide as a club which date we will designate to celebrate

A bicycle bedecked in fall leaves. A wagon bearing a Bible verse. Maybe even a creative costume to complete the look. Those are some of the possibilities for a parade that’s part of Risser’s Mennonite Church’s annual Fall Fest. The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the backyard of the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown. The highlight of the evening will be a decorated wheels parade, beginning at 6 p.m. Participants of all ages are invited to decorate any set of wheels - bikes, wagons and more - with fall flair and a Bible verse before joining the parade. Those taking part are also encouraged to dress in costume as they walk alongside their wheeled creations, although costumes and decorations should avoid Halloween themes. “The parade is open to everyone of all ages,” said Arlene Heistand, planning committee member. “We are asking for the costumes to be family-friendly and fallthemed.” She suggested flannel shirts, bib overalls, cozy sweaters embellished with artificial leaves, flowers, pumpkins, gourds and more. The parade is just one part of an evening designed to bring people together and celebrate the season. Fall Fest will also feature fall games, warm drinks, baked goods, a campfire, a photo booth and more. Families can spend the evening enjoying seasonal treats and activities, gathering around the campfire and visiting with friends and neighbors. The event offers plenty of opportunities

fter a soldout inaugural event last year, the Historic Lantern Tour of Elizabethtown will return this October with new stories, historical characters, and - for the first time - a Lantern Trolley Tour. Presented by Winters Heritage House Museum and Elizabethtown Preservation Associates Inc., the second annual tour will explore this year’s theme, “Elizabethtown: The Road to Liberty.” The new 90-minute Lantern Trolley Tour will be offered on Thursday, Oct. 15, with tickets available for two departure times: 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The trolley tour will be followed by the traditional lantern-lit walking tours on Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17, with tour times at 6:30, 7 and 7:30 p.m. The walking tour route is a half mile and takes about an hour. “Guests will step back into the 1700s to discover what life was like in early Elizabethtown and how the growing call for American independence affected the people who called this community home,” explained Teresa St. Angelo, director of the Winters Heritage House Museum. “The journey begins at the historic H.U. Coble House, an 1877 Victorian home that is part of Winters Heritage

Come out to A Day in the Park and get to know the people, places and organizations that make Maytown a great place to live and work. The event will be held on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial Park, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta. Sponsored by the Maytown Civic Association, the festivities will include free hot dogs, face painting, live music by The Colin Alvarez Band and more. “We’re going to have a 40-foot inflatable obstacle course,” said Cindy Wivell, president of the Maytown Civic Association. “We’ll also (have) opportunities for businesses and organizations like the Boy Scouts, churches or any type of community organization to set up a table and meet face to face with other people in the community.” New this year, the event will also include an apple pie contest. Featuring home-baked pies, the contest will judge entries on sweetness, crust, aroma, filling and texture. Entries will be accepted from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 at the park pavilion. After judging, entries will be auctioned off at 3 p.m., with proceeds donated to the Maytown Civic Association. “When you think of a community event happening in the fall, something like apple pie just fits,” Wivell said. “It seemed like something fun to add to the day.” This is the second year the Maytown Civic Association has held a community day, and in addition to bringing neighbors together, it’s an opportunity to spread the word

about the group behind the event. “It’s a chance for the Maytown Civic Association to raise awareness of what we do and to let people know we exist,” Wivell said. “Our main objective is to oversee care and maintenance of the Maytown square.” The group oversees mowing and weeding of the grass and flowerbeds in the square and ensures the centerpiece of Maytown is kept up, including decorating it for various holidays, such as the Fourth of July and Christmas. “We exist to support the town’s organizations and to promote and support the happenings in Maytown,” Wivell said. “We don’t have a budget, so the Day in the Park is a fundraiser, and we’ll accept donations. We’re also really appreciative of the people and groups who are sponsoring the day.” Sponsors include Love’s Tree Service and Systems, Houseal Plumbing, Siegrist Automotive, Tom Jones Landscaping, Paramount Senior Living, Rose Madar Realtor and Herr’s Chips. “The Day in the Park is an event where the Civic Association wants to provide a space for the people of Maytown to connect with each other in a fun and relaxing atmosphere,” Wivell said. “It’s an easy way to get to know your neighbors and learn about all the things Maytown has to offer.” Preregistration is requested but not required for the apple pie contest. our 100th anniversary.” When it formed, the club collected dues of 25 cents a year, and club members were expected to grow seven annuals and five perennials annually. “These were exciting times, when each member tried to raise perfect blooms,” the history states. “Between flower shows, arrangements would be taken to the meetings for comparison and criticism.” While some things have changed, such as the annual dues, the mission of the club remains steady almost a century after its inception. “Our club meets monthly on the first Monday of each month at The Gathering Place in Mount Joy. We enjoy a delicious lunch and typically hear from a speaker on a gardening topic,”Wivell said. “We collect a small membership due that covers the cost of a little membership booklet with each member’s contact information and a schedule of the year’s programs.” The club year runs from September through July, with no meetings in January and February. “We also hold two silent auctions a year where members bring things from home to be auctioned,” Wivell remarked. “The items range from plants, baked goods, household décor and holiday decorations. It’s a fun time more than anything.” Wivell noted that the club - which currently includes 106 members was more active in the community in its earlier years, with members entering flower shows and supporting local organizations such as the library. “At this point, our membership primarily gathers for our own education and enjoyment due to physical limitations,” she said. “However, if our members express interest in becoming more active, we will wel-

come opportunities that make sense for our group.” Wivell has been a member since 2022. “My daughter and I attended a meeting together that included a presentation on orchids, and I was hooked,” she said. “The presentations are a bonus to the time of connection I enjoy with the other members during the luncheon. It’s my favorite day of the month. After joining, I quickly got recruited to serve on the board, and it’s been an absolute privilege to work alongside such a wonderful group of women that keep the club moving forward while preserving the traditions that were started over 90 years ago.” Even though the group is called the “Elizabethtown Flower Club,” members come from outside the town, Wivell said, adding, “Our members are primarily from the Elizabethtown and Mount Joy areas, but we have members that drive more than 30 minutes to attend.” The group welcomes new guests to join the monthly meetings. “If they enjoy eating good food, meeting new people and are interested in topics related to flowers and gardens, they will enjoy the Elizabethtown Flower Club,” Wivell said. She emphasized that the club does not have an online presence, and that’s intentional. “We’re an old-fashioned club and intend to keep it that way,” she explained. “In fact, our members get a personal phone call to see if they will be attending the next meeting. Sense, Sensibility and Plenty of Laughs BY CATHY MOLITORIS

W hen E ncore! Home School Productions presents “Sense & Sensibility,” audiences can expect to see a mix of genres, said Paul Meo, a senior who portrays Colonel Brandon in the show. “It’s based on the book by Jane Austen, and the book is a romance. The show is a romantic comedy,” he said. “It ’s full of romance, comedy, drama. It has everything you’d want to see in a show, and it’s hilarious.” Brennan Garber, a junior who plays John Willoughby, emphasized that last point. “I’ve seen a couple of versions of Jane Austen’s works, and sometimes they can be kind of slow,” he said. “ This one is going to invite you in and keep you wanting more. It’s really funny, with a great comedic twist on a classic.” The show will be perfor med at L andis Hall in The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2 and 3, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4. Featuring a cast of 20 homeschooled students,

the play adapts the Austen novel and tells the story of the ups and downs of the Dashwood sisters. Sensible Elinor (played by Grace Miller) and hypersensitive Marianne (portrayed by Cambria Brinton) are reeling after the sudden death o f their father, w hich has left them financially destitute and socially vulnerable. A chorus of gossips provides judgment and commentary on the characters as Elinor grows close to Edward Ferrars (played by Noah Arnold) and Marianne falls for the dashing John Willoughby while Colonel Brandon quietly pines for her as well. Through it all, the play asks the question, “When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?” Paul described his character as a middle-aged man who wants to find love. “He’s been hurt in his past , and he longs for another relationship. H e ’s i n v i t e d t o v i s i t the Dashwoods, and he immediately falls in love w i t h M a r i a n n e ,” Pa u l explained. “He’s a ver y e m o t i o n a l , p a s s i o n ate man, but he’s restrained. He keeps it on the inside.”

For Brennan, playing John Willoughby has given him an opportunity to stretch as an actor. “He’s sort of the rascal of the show and could be seen as the villain,” he said. “I end up seducing one of the young maidens. I have a checkered past, which forces me to break away from her and causes her hear tbreak . Playing this character is very different than anything I’ve done before. I usually play comedic characters, so being the villain h a s b e e n a re a l l y f u n challenge.” Encore! Home School Productions brings together high school students from throughout central Pennsylvania to perform a fall play and a spring musical. The cast of “Sense & Sensi-

bility ” represents 15 school districts, including Hempfield and Elizabethtown. Brennan said audiences can expect to see a show that feels modern despite its late 18th-century setting. “ T his is ultimately a show about a true, wholesome connection between two people. Dave has helped to construct a larger maintenance shop and storage room, built storage shelves to organize tools and hardware, seal-coated the parking lot in front of MFI’s hangar, designed and built a floor drain cover and hose reel brackets, replaced a commercial door closure and more.

Both Barb and Dave admit they were hesitant to volunteer with MFI at first. “I had never heard of it,” Barb said. But when they started doing some research, they learned of the organization’s deep impact. They were especially impressed with MFI’s solid track record of delivering supplies and providing transportation for personnel to more than 600 Bible-based affiliate missions. MFI uses a fleet of DC-3 airplanes for deliveries of medical supplies, Bibles, food, mail and essential provisions to remote airstrips few others can reach, delivering help and hope where it’s needed most. “They have to follow all the FAA inspection rules for maintaining the plane,” Dave explained. “And maintenance costs on aircraft are expensive.” Proceeds from the banquet will help with a cockpit upgrade to MFI’s N500MF aircraft. It’s currently grounded, having undergone major wing repair and installation of new engines and propellers. The cockpit upgrade will replace aging instruments with reliable technology, including improved navigation, weather radar and safety awareness systems. The estimated cost for the project is $500,000. For 60 years, Missionary Flights International (MFI) has served its motto of “standing in the gap for missions.” The organization was created to provide logistical support to missionary workers by delivering supplies and other needed materials to more than 600 affiliated missions throughout the Bahamas, Haiti and the Dominican Republican. People can learn more about MFI and its impact at a fundraising banquet to be held on Friday, Oct. 16, at the Kreider Farms Cultural Center at Hoffer Farm, located on the campus of Pleasant View Communities, 547 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will begin at 6 p.m. Dave and Barb Stauffer of Mount Joy have been serving with MFI for four years. The organization is a natural fit for the couple, who believe in volunteering. “Volunteers make the world go round,” Barb said. “Volunteers are so important.” When they both retired, the Stauffers purchased an RV and set a goal of traveling, Dave said. “We wanted to volunteer and do some service while we were traveling,” he noted. “We identified a number of different organizations we could help.” While talking to a member of his small group at Calvary Church, Dave learned about MFI. “They had just built a beautiful RV park and hospitality center in Florida,” he said. “We said, ‘Hey, let’s start snowbirding.’ We’ve been spending two months there each year over the last four years.” While in Florida, the Stauffers help in any way they can to support
