Goodwill’s WOW Program Offers Practical Tools for Life If you have questions about achieving financial stability, developing skills, understanding AI or navigating the tech world, Goodwill Keystone Area’s Wisdom Opportunity Wealth (WOW) is a great place to start. WOW offers one-on-one coaching, retirement and long-term planning, AI and tech literacy training, career and entrepreneurship guidance, budgeting and credit support and tools to keep you accountable. And all of its programs are provided free of charge. WOW began after Sue Soderburg retired from Goodwill as chief mission officer and wanted to leave a legacy program with the organization she’d served for more than 30 years. It started as an initiative focused on women and was called Women of Wealth. “In a lot of ways, women are still behind, especially when it comes to financial literacy,” said Taylor Gilbert, WOW program director. “We served a ton of women within the first and most of the second year of the program, but as word got out, there was so much interest in what we were doing, and we felt we were limiting the number of individuals we could help. We didn’t want to turn down anyone who wanted our services.” As Gilbert explained, the WOW program comes into a location which could be a business, a school or any other group - and provides all programming, activities and take-home assignments, along with refreshments.

McNees Elects Wertz to Membership

GEARS will host its 30th annual four-person scramble golf tournament on Friday, Oct. 2, at Dauphin Highlands Golf Course, 650 S. Harrisburg St., Harrisburg. The tournament will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The fee per player includes green fees, use of a cart, dinner, contests, and prizes. The event is sponsored by R.E. Pierson Materials, DDMP Investment Advisors, and Central Penn Propane. Zumba Gold will be offered on Mondays, Oct. 19 to Dec. 7, from 6:15 to 7 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. The program is geared to de-conditioned and beginner exercisers as well as active older adults. L e t ’s L i n e D a n c e Improver+ will be available for people age 14 and up on Tuesdays, Oct. 20 to Nov. 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. The class will introduce dances that are identified as improver level or above. The class is open to anyone; however, it is recommended that attendees have a basic foundation, as the dances covered will be more difficult than those taught in the typical Let’s Line Dance classes.

Last year, Threads & Treads raised more than $10,000 to help the Elizabethtown community and provided more than $6,000 for winter coats and coldweather gear for students, as well as supplying personal care items and school supplies to set students up for success. “In the last two years, this program has raised over $30,000 to help children in need in the Elizabethtown Area School District,” Andrick noted. Dolly Parton Tribute Party Set The Elizabethtown Moose Lodge 596/701, 126 Maytown Road, Elizabethtown, will host a Dolly Parton Tribute Party on Friday, Sept. 25. The event will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. T he festivities will feature dancing, drinks, contests, and games, and people are encouraged to come dressed in country attire or dressed like Dolly

will sing and entertain on the guitar. Domines noted that the farm is a perfect location for a blessing of the animals event, because St. Francis embraced nature and ecology. The property has been part of the church since the early 1990s. “ Virginia Cassell was a member of our parish, and she left her estate to the church, which includes 26 acres of farmland in Mount Joy Township,” Domines said. “It was her desire to keep it as a nature preserve.” In 2000, the church built a pavilion on the site, and an altar has been constructed as well. Weddings have been performed on the property, and the Elizabethtown Boys Club uses the baseball field on-site, while a variety of trails and a playground can be enjoyed by visitors. Domines emphasized that people are invited to stay as long as they’d like at the event for fun and fellowship. “I want people to come out, have a good time and spend time together,” he said. “Even if you don’t have a pet, if you love animals, come on out for St. Francis Day. Come out and celebrate with the community.” All types of pets are welcome, but they must be properly restrained. Marching Bands to Perform Field Shows The Manheim Township marching band will host “A Showcase in Sight and Sound” on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Gene Kruis Field at Manheim Township High School, 115 Blue Streak B l v d . , L a n c a s t e r. T h e gates will open at 5 p.m., and bands will start performing at 6 p.m. Several local food trucks will be on hand to provide food and beverages. The showcase will offer an opportunity for families, students, and community members to witness performances that young musicians have spent months creating. At least four local bands will share their 2026 field shows, complete with musical arrangements, drill

movements, and visual e ffe cts . T he Manheim Township Middle School will perform the national anthem. In addition to Manheim Township, the school districts currently scheduled to be represented include Conestoga Valley, Elizabethtown Area, and Tulpehocken Area. There is an admission fee, with a discount for seniors and students and a price cap for families. Tickets will be sold at the gate, with both cash and Venmo accepted. For six hours on Saturday, Sept. 26, Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ (UCC) will transform into a bargain hunter’s dream. The church, located at 11 E. Elizabeth St., Maytown, will host its annual bazaar and yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Prices for most items are by donation,” said Linda Good, church secretary. “There are a few special items that will be priced.” People will also have the opportunity to win a laundry basket filled with new household items. The winner will be drawn at 2 p.m., and people do not need to be present to win. Free coffee and doughnuts will be available, and baked goods will also be for sale. Good said the sale always features a large inventory. “We have something for everyone,” she remarked. “All items are in good condition. Some of the items are new and still in their boxes.” The variety of items will include furniture, toys, purses, household goods, curtains, bedding, shoes, collectibles, tools, jewelry, books and more. Shoppers may find framed pictures, holiday items, office supplies, gadgets and glassware, Good said. For bargain hunters, the bazaar offers plenty of opportunities to b ro w s e at a l e i s u re l y pace and discover something unexpected. With s uch a w ide ra n ge o f merchandise, shoppers can look for practical

household necessities, items for children, seasonal decorations or unique treasures. T he donation-based pricing on most merchandise also makes it possible to find useful items while supporting the church’s outreach efforts. Proceeds from the event are used for local outreach and for the many missions of the church. The event also provides an opportunity for neighbors and community members to gather at the church and enjoy a morning of shopping. Visitors browse the baked goods and take their time looking through the many tables and displays while enjoying fellowship with members of the church and the wider community. The church has been holding the bazaar and yard sale for many years, and it’s an example of how the congregation works to impact the community outside its walls. “We are small in numbers, but mighty in faith and hospitality,” Good said. their dogs,” he said. “We’ve gotten a bunny or a hamster as well. This year, I’m hoping for a bigger turnout of people and their animals. I’m hoping for a horse or sheep or goats at this service. I’ll take a giraffe if I can get one.” Holding the event at Cassell Farm rather than outside on the church grounds will provide room for a much larger gathering, Domines said, noting that the festivities will begin with a brief service at 4 p.m. “ We have an outdoor chapel there, and we’ll do a reading from Scripture and a prayer,” he explained. “We’ll have Susquehanna Service Dogs there, and they’ll introduce themselves and talk about what they do.” Representatives from Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation - both human and animal - will also be on-site. “ They are bringing a Virginia possum named Belvedere, along with Lily and Elliot, who are groundhogs, and Feisty the squirrel,” Domines said. After the ceremony, people will be invited to the on-site pavilion for food and fun. “We’ll have food for people and some food for the animals, too, like dog and cat treats,” Domines said. “People will have a chance to pet the wildlife Acorn Acres is bringing, and we’ll have crafts for kids to do.” Connor Chapman, who is a member of the congregation,

James Malone awarded a $100,000 state grant to the program at Goodwill’s store and donation center in Elizabethtown. “I’m proud to have helped secure funding for a program that empowers people to achieve financial health by teaching them how to budget and manage their resources,” Malone said. “Goodwill’s WOW program meets people where they are through partnerships with organizations, like the Lancaster County Prison, to end cycles of poverty and give people a hand up into a better future.” Since its inception about three years ago, WOW has reached more than 2,000 individuals throughout 22 counties in southcentral Pennsylvania. This fall, Gilbert is launching a new series of tech literacy courses, focused on how to use programs like Microsoft Word and Excel. She’ll bring a handful of laptops, a WiFi hotspot, a projector and a screen to provide the classes. “We don’t want anything to be a barrier to us coming in and doing a program,” she said. WOW has also begun offering programs focused on AI, the first Goodwill in the country to do so, Gilbert said. “We’re working on breaking down the barrier of being scared or intimidated to use AI,” she said. “We talk about safety and privacy. We break it down so people can see how easy it is to use AI.” While some people may think AI is a topic suited for businesses or people in the tech industry, it can be a helpful tool for anyone, she said. “ We have a pro g ram called ‘AI at Home,’ where we show people how they can use AI for things like making a meal plan, setting a grocery budget, help with their résumé or creating an exercise routine,” Gilbert remarked. Gilbert noted that feedback the organiz ation receives from teenagers is especially compelling. “Kids will say, ‘Can you please come back? We never knew this before,’” she said. “Their teachers touch on financial topics, but we go into depth about everything from the FAFSA to scholarships, renting your first apartment, what it looks like to get your first car.” WOW is unique to Goodwill Keystone, and the program can be offered on weekdays, evenings or weekends. “ We’ll come in over a lunchtime and do a program,” Gilbert said. “We’ll come in any time where we can reach the most people and that’s the most convenient for them.” WOW has offered programing to church groups, homeschool co-ops, residents of homeless shelters and domestic violence shelters, schools and more. “ W hatever the group wants, we can design our program to fit their needs,”

Understanding Dementia

TechLink was recently awarded a $280,000 PAsmar t grant by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to develop fiber optic instructional labs. The Lancaster County Career & Technology Center is among the members of TechLink, a consortium of nine technical schools focused on expanding career and technical education. The goal for the new fiber optic instructional labs is to significantly expand hands-on fiber optic training opportunities in southcentral Pennsylvania, with the capacity to serve approximately 400 students annually. The PAsmart grant designated for the project was part of PDE’s latest round of grant distributions, announced on Aug. 21. The awarded funds were received by 17 organizations and totaled $3.5 million. Initiatives stemming from these funds will expand access to career pathways in multiple industries. The nine partner schools

will implement three shared-equipment instructional labs, which will prepare secondary students and adult learners for fiber optic-related jobs. Students using the instructional labs will complete 40 hours of instruction and earn the CFOT Level 1 Certification, a credential valued by telecommunications, broadband, and electrical companies. Select information technology teachers from each school will be trained to deliver the curriculum, teach the hands-on skills necessary to be a certified fiber optic technician, and administer the CFOT Level 1 Certification exam. The labs’ fiber optic training equipment will rotate a m o n g t h e Te c h L i n k schools to maximize its use and the number of students who can benefit from it. As the lead grant applicant and fiscal agent, the York County School of Technology will manage the funds, procurement, equipment acquisition, and required state reporting.

W h e t h e r i t ’s a fa m i l y m e m b e r o r a ra n d o m stranger in the grocer y store, knowing how to interact with someone with dementia and learning more about the disease can benefit everyone. Donna Wilkie, a certified dementia practitioner at Hospice & Community Care, will present “What Do I Need to Know About Dementia?” at Zion Lutheran Church, 2 Hazel St., Manheim, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The presentation will address different types of dementia, teach ways to effectively communicate with a person living with dementia and offer ideas for other “dementia friendly” actions. “The program will cover five key messages to understanding better what people living with dementia are going through,” Wilkie said. “ We want people who come to the program to be able to react better when they come across people who have dementia.” One of the biggest messages Wilkie hopes people will take away from the program is that dementia is not a natural consequence of aging. “We’ll talk about what’s normal aging and what’s not normal aging ,” she said. “Losing your keys or forgetting why you came into a room are signs of aging, not necessarily anything more.” S h e a l s o h o p e s p a rticipants will begin to view dementia for what it is - brain failure - and help make that concept as mainstream in everyday conversations as kidney or liver failure. Wilkie understands firsthand what it’s like to care for a person with dementia. “My mom died from Lewy body dementia in 2016,” she said. “I came to work at Hospice in 2019. I got involved with their dementia resource team. It’s a passion for me. I wish

It’s really important that people get that education to help their loved ones.” The presentation at Zion Lutheran is part of Dementia Friends, an organization dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of people with dementia. “Zion is committed to join a growing movement to create ‘dementia-friendly’ communities,” said pastor Kate Warn. She noted that the program is part of a series of informational sessions for the Manheim community related to the idea of “aging with grace.” The program will be interactive, Wilkie said, with opportunities for questions from the audience and hands-on activities. And above all, it will present dementia as more than a devastating diagnosis, she said, adding, “We’re focused on trying to remember all the things a person with dementia can do, rather than the things they can’t do.” She wants participants to leave with a better understanding of people living with dementia. “You could have a family member with dementia, or you could just encounter a person living with dementia who you come across in the community,” she said. “We want everyone to be able to react in better ways when this happens and know what to do.” Advance registration for the program is not required but is helpful for planning purposes.
