Making History At The American Legion BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When Sylvia Spagnolo was sworn in as commander of the American Legion Post 329 in Elizabethtown, she made history. Spagnolo became the first female commander of the post, located at 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown. In her new position, she’s working hard on another kind of history - making sure the service of veterans is never forgotten.

Spagnolo was active in the U.S. Air Force from 1985 to 1996, serving during Operation Desert Storm. Born and raised in Dauphin County, she moved back to central Pennsylvania in 2016, when she joined Post 329. Spagnolo is a registered nurse who provides home health care to residents in Lancaster County, and she also provides parttime real estate services with Berkshire Hathaway in Elizabethtown. She was sworn in as commander in August during a monthly post meeting, with chaplain Craig Kauffman of American Legion District 10 officiating. Joining the local American Legion the country’s largest veterans service organization - was a priority for Spagnolo and her husband, Philip Wise, who is a retired Marines officer. “The American Legion does a lot for our veterans and a lot for the community, which was important to me,” Spagnolo noted. “Locally, they participate in events like the Memorial Day parade, provide service to the VA hospital and raise money for local organizations. I enjoy the community of the club and being around other veterans.” See History pg 7

Sylvia Spagnolo Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Soiree will feature lots of spooky fun.

You’re Invited To The Sanderson Soiree hen Carrington Creasy, owner of Cider Press Market, was looking for a Halloween-themed event to hold at the Hub on Market, she found inspiration from a well-loved movie. “It crossed my mind that ‘Hocus Pocus 2’ will be released on Sept. 30, and my lightbulb went off,” she said. “The original ‘Hocus Pocus’ is nostalgic for a lot of people, so it was a no-brainer. This had to be our theme. The event is the day after the new movie comes out to keep the excitement going.” Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson

“It’s a perfect way to kick off the Halloween season.” The evening will feature a kids’ costume contest for children age 15 and under. Registration for the contest will begin at 5:45 p.m., with voting held from 6 to 7 p.m. Prizes

will be awarded for the cutest, most creative and scariest costumes. From 7 to 9 p.m., “Hocus Pocus” trivia will held at EVO 206 Coffee Co. The game will feature four rounds of trivia, and teams must preregister at the site. There is a charge for trivia, and proceeds will benefit Elizabethtown College’s Colleges Against Cancer (CAC). “E-town College’s CAC had actually reached out to see if there was anything we could do to help raise funds for them, which was perfect timing,” Creasy noted. “One hundred percent of our trivia proceeds will be donated to the organization.”

Have you ever wanted to cuddle with a kangaroo? That’s one of the items you can bid on at the 53rd annual Conewago Country Fair, to benefit students at Conewago Elementary School. “One of our faculty members has a relative who has a kangaroo farm, so you can bid to win kangaroo snuggles,” said Rachele Parmer, event chair. The Conewago Country Fair will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 2809 Hershey Road, Elizabethtown.
