hen children partici pate i n t he B i bl e2School program, they learn life lessons, explore biblical truth, make new friends and have fun. Elizabethtown’s Bible2School program will kick off on Tuesday, Oct. 1. It will offer free classes to second-grade students from East High Street Elementary School on Tuesdays and third-grade students from Bear Creek School on Wednesdays. Students are bused to and from classes, which are held in a one-room schoolhouse at Rissers Mennonite Church. “The children bring their lunch,

and we usually start out with time to check in with them and they can share anything that’s really on their hearts,” said Karen Olweiler, site coordinator. “Then we’ll have a lesson - Old Testatment curriculum for second grade and New Testament curriculum for third grade.” Lessons are underscored with questions such as “How do you show love to others?” and “How do you forgive?” and are reinforced through songs or hands-on activities. “There might be an experiment or a demonstration for the children to see,” Olweiler said. “It helps them understand what you’re trying to teach. Sometimes, there’s

a skit with the Bible lesson. We might go over the story and have them act it out. The kids really like that, especially Daniel and the lions’ den. We have little manes they can wear and a crown for the king.” Bible2School began in 1979 in Manheim and has expanded to more than 30 schools throughout the county and the state. The program came to Elizabethtown Area School District in 2016 and has been held at Rissers Mennonite Church since 2021. Olweiler, who has been volunteering with Bible2School since 2016, said she’s always impressed with the children’s enthusiasm for learning as well as their

Through LVC’s help, veterans integrate into society BY JEFF FALK

Beyond making services available to veterans, the Lancaster Vet Center (LVC) has a desire to make sure those benefits are being used. LVC wants to serve veterans in much the same way that veterans served others. “Some veterans will say, ‘Why me? Why do I deserve this?’’’ said Phil Grant, who’s been LVC’s director since February of 2022.

“The reason is because your service qualified you for these services. There’s no fee. There’s no cost. The eligibility doesn’t expire. They earned it through their time in the military.” “Our motto is ‘Connection, Camaraderie, Community,’” continued Grant. “We want to live up to that. When you come here, you’ll be able to connect with your vet community and build that camaraderie. That’s See Veterans pg 5

Gamache is a lead character in 18 bestselling books by author Louise Penny, and he’ll star in her newest book, “The Grey Wolf,” which will be released in October. Fans of Penny (and Gamache) are invited to meet the author at an event on Thursday, Oct. 31.
