A wealth of history can be found in Marietta, but much of it has been buried, forgotten or overlooked. Now a group of volunteers is working to bring that heritage into the spotlight. When pastor Dan Hammer felt called to lead a church plant in Manheim, he trusted the Lord to see it through. “We’d been praying for years for this,” he said. “This is God at work. He’s opening doors. God opened a door and built a relationship. His fingerprints were clearly on this.” Mission Church will host its first ser vice in Manheim at Manheim Christian School, 686 Lebanon Road, on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 10 a.m. It will mark a northern post of the church that has more than two decades of roots in Lancaster. “More and more people were coming to our church from the Manheim, Mount Joy and Elizabethtown area, and that’s a long drive,” Hammer said, describing the motivation to seek a Manheim location. “We started looking at bringing the church closer to the people.” God was at work, Hammer said, when He connected the church planters with Jon Sauder, director of admissions, development and spiritual life at Manheim Christian School. As it turned out, several people who are active in the Manheim community were members at the Lancaster location of Mission Church, and they touted the benefits of the church plant. It was perfect timing. “We recently completed an expansion, with new classrooms and new bathrooms, and now that we had a better facility, we were eager to share it with the community,” Sauder said. “I was very quickly on board and sharing the idea of the church See Mission pg 4

disappear, Tina Charles worked diligently to find the proof, and she succeeded. Now Sweeney and the other members of the MAALI Team are eager to finish what Tucker and Waters started. “What that generation was unable to do, we’re making progress to fulfill their vision,” Sweeney said. “Our goal is not only to preserve and honor the history of these churches, cemeteries and communities, but also to make that history accessible to future generations.” The MAALI Team has installed four commemorative markers, two at Bethel AME Church and its cemetery and two at Wesley AME Zion Cemetery. Each marker includes information and a QR code linking to a website where visitors can learn more about the history and significance of the sites. At the dedication ceremony, the program will touch on the Colored School, a painful reminder of racial segregation in the region, as well as Colored Camp Meetings, where upward of 5,000 people gathered just outside of Marietta between 1908 and 1913. Sweeney also wants to highlight women in ministry, including Rev. Charley Thomas, the current pastor at Wesley AME. That church has its own rich history. Jarena Lee, the first woman preacher in the AME Church and the first Black woman to publish an autobiography, preached at

The program is suitable for people of all fitness levels and can be adapted to individual needs. Participants should bring a yoga mat and yoga block.

the site, Sweeney said. To build his MAALI Team, Sweeney recruited volunteers who care as deeply about Marietta’s past as he does. The members said the project has opened their eyes to a history they didn’t know. John Jenkins worked for years at what is now GSK in Marietta. “I would walk to work, never realizing that part of the lot I walked by was the Black cemetery in disrepair,” he said. Lynn Jenkins said learning about the site was emotional. “There are human remains there that should be respected,” she said. “That was a big draw for me in helping with this project. When you pass that corner, there are Black people buried there, and everyone should know that.” The MAALI Team has spent countless hours repairing the Wesley AME Cemetery. “When we first got there, the area was in really bad shape,” said Charles Dorm. “There was junk everywhere. We assessed it and started manually cleaning it out.” The group cut down trees, planted grass, straightened tombstones, excavated and even used ground-penetrating radar to locate unmarked graves. Work is still ongoing, and the team noted that many local indi-

viduals and businesses have contributed to the project, including Jones Landscaping, Shull’s Tree Service and the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania. Columbia Water Co. donated its services to the project as well. Jeff Hudson, a retired history teacher and former vice president of Marietta Borough Council, has been instrumental in helping, as has Andre Dominguez, a retired mechanical engineer who helped with cemetery conservation, among other contributions, and Rick Evans, who has also helped with the project. “We want to thank the entire community for their help with this,” Sweeney said, noting that the project is under its $23,750 budget thanks to donations of time and funds. “Even when we’re out there working, people will blow their horns in support, and we appreciate that. We want our history to stand with the rest of the local history, not above and not below, but with it.” Light refreshments will be served at the commemoration ceremony, and the building is handicapped-accessible. The ceremony will be held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. “We are going to be focusing on four themes,” said Michael Sweeney, who gathered the people who comprise the MAALI Team. “The program will cover the church burnings, the veterans who are buried in the cemeteries, the Colored School and the Colored Camp Meetings.” As Sweeney explained, on April 19, 1861, both of the African American churches in Marietta were set on fire. Bethel AME burned completely to the ground, while Wesley AME Zion was damaged but later repaired. Just over a year later, Wesley AME Zion and the Colored School (also known as the African School) as well as a home on the property were destroyed by fire. He noted that about 35 Civil War, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans are buried in the cemeteries, including his father, but their history has been hidden. For years, the property containing the Wesley AME Zion cemetery was abandoned, falling into disrepair. In the early 1990s, two local women, Catherine Tucker and Thelma Mae Waters, received a grant to restore the space but couldn’t prove the property was officially abandoned. We’re all messy people. We’re all sinners, but we’re going to love like Christ as Christ loved us. This is not something we’re called to define. Jesus does that. coming here with our decision makers.” It also helped that some of the faculty are members of the church, as well as some of the students. “God is knitting together a really cool story for Mission Church,” Hammer said. “The heart behind this plan is to reach the community. It takes all different types of churches to reach all different types of people. You can never have enough churches.” The mission of Mission Church is “to make disciples who live loved and sent to the glory of God,” Hammer said. “We want to create disciples who will spread the Gospel and change lives for all who hear it.” With more than a dozen years as a senior pastor in Maryland, Hammer understands what’s needed for a successful church plant. He calls it the “four wheels of traction,” including a planter, people, a place and provision. “None of this could happen without God,” he said, of the conversations about the new church which began this spring. “It’s all His grace, all His glory.” He’s excited about a partnership between the church and the school beyond Sunday mornings. Mount Joy Church of God wants to help. The church will host a Medicare Education Workshop on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m. It will be held at Mount Joy Church of God, 30 E. Main St. The workshop will be presented by Roxann Brown, financial consultant, and Lynette Morales, stewardship consultant. Both women work for Everence. Participants will be guided through topics including the different par ts of Medicare, understanding coverage options, deciding when to enroll and learning how to enroll. Medicare consists of several parts and coverage options, each with its own rules, costs and considerations. The choices people make can affect how they receive health care and what they pay for services and prescriptions. The workshop is designed to provide general information in an easy-to-understand format, giving participants an opportunity to become more familiar with the Medicare system before making decisions about their coverage. Attendees can also bring questions they have about the enrollment process or available options. “Before getting into ministry, I was a licensed financial adviser for about 15 years, so I know from experience this is a topic that confuses a lot of people,” said Adam Swarr, pastor of family ministries for Mount Joy Church of God. “My hope is that those in attendance will learn a few things so they can make better educated decisions and reduce some of the stress in their life.” The workshop is another way for the church to connect with people outside its congregation, he said. “Our church has always had a focus on the community, but this year we wanted to take it to the next level, and part of that is putting on a series of educational talks,” he explained. “We did a parenting event in February, a financial planning workshop in April and now this Medicare information presentation.” He hopes anyone who is interested will come out for the See Medicare pg 5

Davis is known for her unique ability to sing while playing the harp. On Sunday, Dec. 13, an Advent Lessons and Carols program will take place at 4 p.m. The service will move through Scripture and song in the traditional way established at King’s College in Cambridge. The church’s choir, congregation and organ will tell the story, with youth readers accompanying the program of music ranging from ancient chants to contemporary choral pieces. Christmas at the Christ Lutheran Organ will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31, as part of Christ Lutheran’s New Year’s Eve celebration. It will feature a congregational carol sing at the church’s 1949 Moller organ. Gane himself will be in the spotlight for a piano concert called “Terrain: A Landscape in Five Movements” on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2027, at 4 p.m. This solo piano performance will be built around five landscapes, with baroque, classical and contemporary pieces. “This concert will have a visual arts aspect to it,” Gane said. “People

will not only hear the music, but they’ll also see paintings and photographs that evoke the different landscapes of the world.” On Sunday, April 18, 2027, Trio Jolie will present a chamber concert at 4 p.m. Oboist Kirstin Myers, cellist Crystal Jordan and flutist Robin Lilarose will perform a repertoire ranging across classical and contemporary chamber literature. The Music on High series will wrap up on Tuesday, May 18, 2027, at 6 p.m., with the Christ Lutheran Church choir presenting “Memories, Shadows, Light.” Built around Franz Schubert’s “Deutsche Messe,” the concert will take audiences on an emotional ride from remembrance through uncertainty toward hope. Christ Lutheran Church has hosted the Music on High series since 2022. The concerts are supported by the Fetter Living Trust. Raymond Fetter served as pastor at the church from 1947 to 1986. His wife, Teresa, was an occasional organist from 1952 to 1965 and then was both organist and choir director until 1986. Gane said the performers in this year’s Music on High series represent a wider geographic area than just local musicians.

“I wanted to focus on highlighting some artists from outside of the state or from places further away in Pennsylvania,” he said. “I do think there is a rich array of talent here, but I really wanted to reach out and bring in some artists from the tri-state area.” The series continues the church’s mission of connecting with the community. “The church has had a long history of great music ministry,” Gane shared. “Next to the Word and Scripture, it’s always been a huge part of this church’s identity, and we wanted to share that with more than the people in our congregation.” He said the concerts typically draw a crowd of anywhere from 80 to 100 people. “For me personally, music has always been a source of expression and a way to promote culture and learn about different people and different parts of the world,” Gane said. “It was important to me to create a series where people can come in and experience that for no cost.” All concerts will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 75 E.
