Take a step back in time and enjoy a weekend of family fun when Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days returns for its 28th year. The event will be held at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge, on Saturday, Sept. 20, and Sunday, Sept. 21.
Breakfast will be served both days at 7 a.m. Opening ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday and after an interdenominational church service that will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held following opening ceremonies both days. Participants should bring their own bait and rod. A tractor parade will be featured at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday.
Each year, the Old Fashioned Field Days spotlight themed antique and collectible items.
“We’re featuring Sears and Roebuck home and garden items and soda advertising and collectibles,” said Ron Bernhard, a member of the event committee.
Both days will also feature opportunities to explore hit and
miss gas engines and antique tractors and see a wide variety of demonstrations.
“We’ll have a blacksmith, someone pressing apple cider, shelling corn demonstrations,” he noted, adding that war re-enactors will

Mount Calvary Christian School’s Benefit Auction and Kids Fest might take place on school grounds, but the event offers something for everyone, whether they are connected to the school or not, said Eric Stone, auction chair.
“This is a community event, especially with the Kids Fest,” he shared. “Kids will have a good time. They’ll have a lot of fun, and this event gives everyone the opportunity to interact with our school in a very informal way.”
The auction and Kids Fest will be held on Friday, Sept. 26, and Saturday, Sept. 27, at the school, 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown. Friday’s festivities will begin with dinner at 4:30 p.m. “We’ll be serving Harvey’s BBQ pulled pork, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, a dinner roll and a drink,” said Lindsay Norris, director of development and community relations for Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS). Dinner will be available for dine-in or drive-through pickup at the school’s west campus, 35 Elm Ave.

Forty years ago, the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center opened its doors to the community, and now the organization is inviting you to a party to celebrate the milestone.
The festivities will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, at the center, located at GEARS, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown.
The celebration will feature special speakers and a catered meal of ham, roasted potatoes, green
“The meal is a great option for someone looking to not cook on a Friday night,” she said. “Even if they don’t come to the auction, they can pick up an easy dinner.” Friday evening will also feature a variety of live and silent auctions, with Hess Auctioneers overseeing the live auction portion.
“This year, we’re focusing on experiences,” Stone said, noting that auction items might be vacation trips or tickets to sporting events. “One of our big features for Friday night are the class baskets. Each elementary
beans, baked macaroni and cheese and dessert, which will be served at noon.
“We have a little extra money in our budget this year, and we thought a 40th anniversary celebration would be fun way to spend some of it,” shared Jess Raush, senior center director. “We wanted to have a celebration to remember all that we’ve come from, all that we’ve done and where we’re going.”
When she mentioned the idea to the seniors who regularly attend the center, they embraced it
“Our seniors love any reason to She noted that the center has invited influential individuals from its history to come to the celebration. Former directors have been invited to attend, and Raush has also invited family members of senior center attendees, both
“We are looking forward to reminiscing,” she said. “We want people
to share stories of what the senior center meant to their loved ones.”
Opened in 1985, the senior center formed in a building that housed a community center. Working with the Lancaster Office of Aging, the center brought members of a Mount Joy senior center to the new location. The center is now housed in a building that still features a community center, along with a preschool.
Raush plans to involve even the littlest people who attend GEARS in the senior center’s celebration.
“We are asking our GEARS preschoolers, ‘What do you think 40 years from now will look like?’ We want to know their ideas for inventions, their predictions,” she said.
Their responses, along with input from seniors, will be collected for a time capsule the center plans to seal and put away to open many years in the future.
There’s always something fun happening at the senior center, Raush said, noting that people come from the Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Conoy, Bainbridge, Manheim and Marietta areas, as well as from Dauphin County.
Seniors sign in when they attend a program, and the center averages 40 to 60 visitors a day depending
well as special themed activities such as Cruise Week or Water Week.
“All of our programs are free to attend,” Raush said, noting that donations will be accepted if people want to give. “Donating is not required to come to a program. I always tell people, ‘I want you here more than I want your dollars.’”
People must be at least 60 years old to attend the senior center, which provides much more than just fun programming, Raush remarked.
“There are so many reasons the senior center is important,” she said. “What we really focus on is ending social isolation. We give people a reason to get out of the house and interact with other people. We also offer free lunch Monday through Friday, and it’s a complete meal, so seniors are getting a nutrition lunch. Study after study shows that when seniors participate in activities, volunteer, take group classes, they live longer and more satisfying lives. Their overall quality of life is better than if they stayed home and isolated.”
She especially enjoys watching the relationships that grow between the seniors who attend the center.
“We have a younger senior who has sort of adopted our oldest member, a lady in her 90s,” Raush shared. “She likes doing crafts,
want the general public to come and have fun.” A small admission fee will be charged for Kids Fest. Proceeds from the auction and Kids Fest will be used for operating expenses at the school. MCCS
but she doesn’t have the dexterity or the eyesight or hearing to do it well anymore, so he helps her out. They both get so much satisfaction out of that.”
Raush invites any senior who is interested to stop in to the center to learn more and try a program or activity.
“People sometimes get very concerned when they hear they have to do paperwork to join us,” she said. “I like to tell them, ‘We are not the doctor’s office. Come in and experience us first, and then do the paperwork on your own time.’”
She’s proud of her seniors who go out of their way to be warm and welcoming to newcomers.
“Nobody’s going to bite you,” she said with a laugh. “Several of our members would lose their teeth if they tried. Whether you want to sit back and people watch and take it all in, or you want to jump right into the deep end and learn a new card game or try a new activity, everyone will be welcoming. We have so many options for seniors to have a better quality of life all in one place.”
Transportation may be arranged to the senior center for the anniversary party if needed. Reservations for the party are requested, but not required. To make a reservation, call the senior center at 717-367-7984 or send an email to SeniorCenter@ GetintoGEARS.org.
serves 800 students in prekindergarten through 12th grade.
“The main way we use the funds is for furthering the mission of Mount Calvary and allowing us to encourage more students to have a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ,” Norris explained. “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and our largest attended event. It brings in over 1,000 people from the community.”
Organizers have set a goal of raising $300,000 over the two-day event.
While the event is designed to bring the local community onto school grounds, it also offers ways
for people who live outside of the area to support the school. New this year, the silent auction will be conducted via an app that anyone can access.
“You don’t have to be there to win, and you can bid on lots of different items, including gift cards,” Norris said. Items up for grabs will be showcased online closer to the auction date.
Tickets are required for Friday’s dinner and Saturday’s breakfast and must be purchased by Friday, Sept. 19. To purchase tickets or for more information on the auction and Kids Fest, visit https://e .givesmart.com/events/Hny.

Lots of activities will be offered for children as well, said Tonya Bernhard, a member of the organizing committee.
“We have barrel train rides for the kids,” she said. “We have a pumpkin patch they can ride a wagon to and pick out a pumpkin, one pumpkin per person. There is a kids’ zone run by Word of Life Church with games for kids to play, and that’s all free.”
Food and music will also be featured.
“All of our food is from civic organizations and local churches,” Tonya said, noting that the entire event is sponsored by the Conoy Lions Club.

worship, Ron said, highlighting the community aspect of the field days.
Both Ron and Tonya have been helping to organize the event for decades, and they look forward to it every year. They are joined by a committee of volunteers that includes their son, Mitchell, along with Kevin and Sandy Baker.
The overall atmosphere of the Old Fashioned Field Days is relaxing and inviting, Tonya said, and people are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets and spend the day, or both days, at the event.
“There’s something for everyone, and there is so much to see and do,” she said. “People who have no interest in gas engines and tractors will still be there all day. There’s lot of things for kids to do.”
We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.
At 3 p.m. on Saturday, a benefit auction will be held, with proceeds used to fund future field days.
“You never know what you’re going to find at the auction,” Tonya shared. “It’s donated goods, so we don’t know what’s going to be there until a few days before it happens.”
For the church service on Sunday morning, all of the churches in Conoy Township come together to

Guided trail rides will be held from 5 to 5:45 p.m. on Wednesdays, Sept. 24 and Oct. 22. The horses are trained to work with riders who have little or no experience. Participants will not trot or gallop, and there is a strict weight limit of 225 pounds.
Declutter & Downsize will be held on Tuesdays, Oct. 7, 14, and 21, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. Kristen Patterson, owner of Sorted & Staged Home Enhancement Services, will teach attendees to clear clutter and create a space that supports the life they want to live.
An Afternoon Kids Program will take place on Wednesdays from Sept. 10 to Dec. 3 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Winters Heritage House, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. There will be no program on Nov. 5. Activities will include painting, sewing, and baking, and there will be a snack. The program is for children ages 4 to 10.
The festival draws thousands of people each year, many of whom have been coming since they were children and now attend with their own kids.
“A lot of people come for both days,” Ron said. “It’s just a good, friendly community event. It’s really family oriented.”
The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, follow “Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days” on Facebook.

The Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has awarded $100,000 in grants to six local organizations for projects that celebrate and preserve the region’s cultural, historical and natural heritage.
The 2025-2026 Heritage Partnership Program grants support initiatives that connect people with the stories and landscapes of the Susquehanna River region through exhibits, signage, historic preservation and public education.
This year, nearly $190,000 in funding requests were submitted, underscoring the strong interest in heritage-focused investment across the area.
“These projects exemplify the mission of the Susquehanna National Heritage Area: to connect people with the places and stories that make this region special,” said SNHA president Mark Platts. “As we approach America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, these efforts ensure that our communities have meaningful ways to reflect on the past and inspire the future.”
This year’s recipients include the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, which received $18,000 to mount an exhibit at Lancaster Public Library highlighting pre-1776 buildings across the county in honor of America’s 250th anniversary. The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education was awarded $20,000 to install 10 new interpretive signs on its campus, offering a self-guided tour on topics ranging from Indigenous land stewardship to regenerative farming and the ecology of the Susquehanna watershed.
LancasterHistory will use its $15,000 grant to add interpretive signs throughout the Tanger Arboretum and President James Buchanan’s Wheatland, enhancing outdoor discovery and education about local horticultural heritage. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society received $18,000 to strengthen programming at the 1719 Museum’s Lancaster Longhouse, with improvements that include native plantings, landscape updates and artifact storage.
Rivertownes PA USA was awarded $9,000 to support preservation efforts at the Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center along the Northwest River Trail, including window restoration, new outdoor panels and updated educational materials. Finally, the York County History Center will use a $20,000 grant to begin conceptual planning for a Revolutionary York exhibit, which will highlight the city’s important role in the
American Revolution, including the framing of the Articles of Confederation.
Nonprofit and municipal applicants submitted project proposals by April 25, and the awards were announced at SNHA’s Summer Soiree in June, said Alene Wilmoth, vice president of finance and operations for SNHA. Projects may begin now and must be completed by June 30, 2026.
“Grant reviewers considered the extent to which a project would a., improve public access to places and stories of this nationally significant region; b., contribute to the preservation of a significant resources and/or authentic interpretation of SNHA’s interpretive themes; and c., support the recipient organization’s interpretive development,” Wilmoth explained, noting that geographic location was also considered to spread the awards throughout York and Lancaster counties. “The selected projects largely support making more free educational experiences available to the public.”
This is the first time the Heritage Partnership Program awarded grants, she said. The program is funded by the U.S. National Park Service and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources through their Partnerships Program.
”Volunteers and professionals throughout York and Lancaster counties work tirelessly to tell the stories of this place and to get people moving along the landscape,” Wilmoth said, adding that grant funds allow recipients to make dream projects a reality. “People only have so much time to give, and fundraising takes a lot of effort. Grant funding allows nonprofits to focus on their mission and their service to the public.”
It’s been a busy and productive year for SNHA. The organization was chosen for the Henry A. Jordan Award by Preservation Pennsylvania through the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards for the preservation of the Mifflin House and Farm. The Zimmerman Center, an SNHA site, was named a 2025 Great Place in PA by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association.
“Susquehanna National Heritage Area will release adventure itineraries in early 2026 to celebrate the Semi-Sesquicentennial, featuring the grant awardees and sites through York and Lancaster counties,” Wilmoth shared. “The grant winners look forward to readers visiting their completed projects next summer!”
