emonstrations, live music, food and fun will come together at the 29th annual Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days, held on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 20, at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge.

Breakfast will be served both days by members of the Conoy Lions Club, beginning at 7 a.m. An opening ceremony will officially kick off the festivities at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and Sunday’s activities will start with a church service at 9 a.m. As Tonya Bernhard, one of the event organizers, explained, the

event features a display of antique gas engines and tractors. “Many of the gas engines will have some sort of equipment attached to them, such as corn shellers, grinders and water pumps,” she said. “We will be pressing apple cider, as well as have a shingle mill making wood shingles. … In the

Nature - and birds of prey - will be in the spotlight at the Great Outdoors Family Expo. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St. Outdoor activities for kids and families will run from 4 to 5:30 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner served until 6:30 p.m. The evening will conclude with a live birds of prey program at 7 p.m. Hosted by the church’s Men’s

Ministr y, the free community event is designed to introduce people of all ages to the enjoyment of the outdoors while providing opportunities for fellowship, learning and family fun. The outdoor portion of the event will focus on a variety of interactive activities. “Guests can try their hand at archery, learn about fly fishing, meet and pet horses and even build a birdhouse to take home,” said Paul Homick, event coordinator. The event, a joint effort of each town’s Chamber of Commerce, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 17, at Melhorn Manor, 977 W. Main St., Mount Joy, from 5 to 7 p.m. “We’re excited to bring the Mount Joy and Elizabethtown communities together for the second annual Community & Business Expo,” said Michele Emenheiser, executive director of the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce. “The evening will offer a chance to learn, connect and discover the many businesses, organizations and resources that are part of our communities.” Exhibitors will have information and giveaways, and attendees are encouraged to pick up a card listing participating businesses and organizations before visiting each booth to collect a signature. “Once the card is complete, return it for a chance to win Mount Joy Money or an Elizabethtown gift basket,” said Denise Grove, executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a fun way to meet the businesses and organizations taking part and make sure you don’t miss any of the booths.” The event is free to attend. “There’s something for everyone,” Emenheiser shared. “We invite the public to come by, visit the tables, enjoy the samples and giveaways … and maybe discover a local business or organization you didn’t know about. “Like many small churches, our congregation has not fully recovered from the years following COVID-19,” said Lynn McCleary, hospital committee member for Saint Luke’s Episocipal C hurch in Mount Joy. “Our beautiful sanctuary glows with histor y and memories, but we also thirst for new voices, new energy and fresh ideas.” To help raise funds for the church and get its name out into the community, Saint Luke’s will host two food fundraisers this month. A bake sale will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, at JB Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A spaghetti dinner will take place at the church, 209 S. Proceeds from the bake sale and spaghetti dinner will help defray the cost of those improvements and allow us to continue creating a warm, welcoming space for everyone who comes through our doors.” It’s been a few years since the church held a bake sale, but the trad i t i o n g o e s way b ac k , McCleary noted. “Years ago, the women of Saint Luke held bake sales twice a year at the old Kmart in Elizabetht o w n ,” s h e s a i d . “ We fondly remember the fun - and the work - of baking, slicing, wrapping, pricing and selling homemade treats from more than

The idea for the expo came about when both Chambers sought an opportunity to collaborate on an event that would bring the two communities together. “ We wanted to create something that would showcase local businesses and organizations while giving them an opportunity to connect with the people they serve,” Grove said. Based on feedback from last year, the expo moved to a weeknight to make it easier for more people to attend. Friends of Donegal participated last year, and the organization is excited to attend again this year, said Andi Riefenstahl, co-founder and president. “ F r i e n d s o f Do n e g a l likes the opportunity to network with other businesses and nonprofits in our community,” she commented. “When we know what services there are, we can better support each other and our families.” For Cindy Wivell, admissions and marketing manager of Paramount Senior Living at Lancaster County, participating in the expo last year provided an opportunity to spread the word about

Placing people ahead of money is the model upon which Life Changes Realty Group’s business is based. “We’re really community focused,” said Jonathan Cross, a Manheim Township resident who’s been employed by Life Changes Realty Group for two years. “It’s why I’m part of this group. It’s the reason I probably won’t sell houses for anybody else. Money comes and goes, and I’ve only got so much time in this life. The question is, ‘What am I doing with my time?’” Life C hanges Realty Group employs 22 realtors and expediates the sales of properties across Lancaster County. Adopting the company ’s pay -itforward program is one of the stipulations for employment. When a Life Changes R e a l t y G ro u p re a l to r assists with the sale of a property, he or she is compelled to donate 10% of their commission to the

nonprofit of their client’s choice. The charities must have local impact and not be associated with political campaigns or politics. “We’re not a national brand; we’re based in Lancaster County,” said Cross. “We don’t accept just anybody. The pay-it-forward program is mandator y when we come on board. Everybody told me how much money I was going to make in real estate. But Brittany (Garner, owner) told me about how much money I was going to give away. We all do it together. It’s important to all of us. “I’ve go t bills to o,” added Cross. “I’m not a f lashy person. I’m not necessarily doing this to make big bucks. At the end of the day, it’s really satisfying giving someone keys to their first house. Miller founded his organization in 2019 with a goal of bringing audiences closer to the wildlife that lives in their own backyards. Prior to that, he worked for 13 years at ZooAmerica, handling a wide range of species and developing extensive experience in animal care and education. “Using native Pennsylvania species and humor, we build a new sense of appreciation for these animals,” Miller said. His engaging style and striking birds promise an entertaining and educational experience for the whole family. The event is designed so families can participate at their own pace, with activities that appeal to both experienced outdoor enthusiasts and those who are simply

The Conoy Lions Club will be serving hot dogs, hamburgers and sausage sandwiches. Falmouth Church will be serving soup, and some of the other food will be a pig roast on Saturday, whoopie pies and pies.” Craft vendors will include a blacksmith, who will demonstrate the craft and sell items, as well as vendors with paintings, embroidered items, local honey and more. A f ishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held, weather permitting, following the opening ceremonies each day. Participants should bring their own rod and bait. “ Word of Life church has a great area set up with lots of things for the kids to do,” Bernhard said. “We also have corn boxes for the kids to play in.” Live music will be performed by Summit Hill on Saturday and by River Rat Jenkins on Sunday.

Revolutionary and Civil War re-enactors will be on-site both days, and an auction will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday. “A l l o f o u r a u c t i o n goods are donated, so we cannot be sure what will show up,” Bernhard said. “ There should be Bainbridge memorabilia, L onga b er ger ba s ke t s , some farm-related items.” Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days is organized by a group of volunteers, many of whom have been involved for decades. “ We a re a g ro u p o f people tr ying to show how things were done many years ago,” Bernhard said. “ The people who will be demonstrating love to answer questions and talk about what they brought to show. They are people who love history and enjoy talking about how and why they work.” She hopes people will come out for the fun, whether they’ve attended before or it’s their first time. “This event is free to come to and walk around and enjoy the day,” she said. “There is something for ever yone - lots for kids and adults to do and see.” Donations will be accepted and will be used along with proceeds from the auction to fund future field days. Murphy to Retire From Big Brothers Big Sisters Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central PA (BBBSSCPA), a local nonprofit dedicated to creating and supporting one-to-one mentoring relationships, has announced the retirement of Mary Murphy, the agency’s vice president of development. Since joining the organization in 2021, Murphy has been instrumental in increasing outreach and raising funds to expand the agency’s footprint across a seven-county service area.

She has led BBBSSCPA’s signature fundraising events, such as Bowl for Kids’ Sake and Over the Edge, as well as securing support for major milestone events like the Youth Leadership Summit and the recent 45th anniversar y gala. Lancaster Bible College’s homecoming and family weekend will include the second annual Bethany Walk in Love Walk/Run on Saturday, Sept. 19, on the college’s campus, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. The family-friendly fundraising event, benefiting the Safe Families program, will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m., followed by a time of gathering and prayer before the 10 a.m. walk and run. A toddler race and the presentation of awards recognizing the top individual and team fundraisers are also part of the morning lineup. Those participating in the event may stay on LBC’s campus to enjoy food trucks, games and kids’ activities, a car show, sports games, and more. Walk and run registration includes a race T-shirt and bib number. Race materials will be distributed on the morning of the event, so participants should plan to arrive early. Runners may sign up in person until noon on the day of the race as well. Safe Families works to keep children safe and families together in Pennsylvania. Participants in the Bethany Walk in Love Walk/ Run will aim to raise awareness of and provide support for families facing challenges like poverty, homelessness, and health issues.
