Put on your tinfoil hat, throw all rationality out the window and conspire with FLATpick Earth Society in modernizing one of America’s iconic art forms. The flatpicking guitar duo will perform on the lawn of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, on Sunday, Sept. 13. Within Community Place on Washington (CPOW), a variety of services support people in the greater Elizabethtown area. But those programs rely on volunteers to provide the most care for the most people. “A good volunteer is a person who wants to give back to the community in a meaningful way,” said Dave Fritchman, volunteer coordinator for CPOW, located at 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. “My main task is to recruit volunteers to staff the three United Churches of Elizabethtown (UCEA) programs - the Community Cupboard, the Community Closet and Meals on Wheels (MOW). Other volunteers are needed and recruited to maintain the Community Place on Washington.” Volunteers mow the lawns and weed the flower and vegetable gardens on-site, as well as remove snow from sidewalks. “At the Community Cupboard, the UCEA program which requires the greatest number of volunteers, positions include shopping assistants, stockroom attendants, donation pickup volunteers and volunteers who do organizing and cleaning tasks,” Fritchman shared. “As you can see, we need all kinds of volunteers and have volunteer opportunities for individuals who enjoy physical tasks, social tasks, etc.” Connie Trynovich, director of the UCEA Community Closet, said volunteers play a vital role in the organization’s operation. “In 2025 the closet served 719 adults and 250 children,” See Volunteers pg 5

n 1976, a new Christian school opened in Elizabethtown. Mount Calvary C hristian School began with 100 students and has since grown in size while its C hristcentered mission has remained steadfast. The school will mark its 50th anniversary with an auction and celebration on Friday, Sept. 25, Last year’s Kids Fest at Mount Calvary Christian School a n d S a t u rd ay, Sept. 26. Saturday’s celebration will begin at 11 a.m. “Saturday will have more of a homecoming feel,” shared superintendent Jared Griest. “We’ll have a Kids Fest with Toucha-Truck from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then we have a number of different athletic events happening during the day.” Games will include JV and varsity volleyball, as well as two varsity soccer matches. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Chosen Brew Coffee Truck and a food stand operated by the high school will serve food and drinks. The highlight of Saturday’s activities will be a Celebration Program, beginning at 4 p.m. in the school gym. “This will be a one-hour program for people to celebrate the 50 years of the school,” Griest said. “We’re collecting ‘50 Stories of Mount Calvary’ right now, and we’re going to use those stories to talk about how God has been faithful to the ministry of the school.” From 5 to 8:30 p.m., a variety of food trucks will be on-site, and the soccer games will be held, with a homecoming celebration between the two games. Proceeds from the event will benefit the ministry of the school and will provide financial assistance to students. “We serve about 775 students in preschool through 12th grade,” Griest said. “We’re one of the largest Christian schools in central Pennsylvania. We have students from four different counties. Students in nine districts are bussed to us, and we have a total of 12 or 13 districts represented.” In L ancaster County, students attend Mount Calvary Christian School from the Elizabethtown School District, as well a s Do n e g a l , M a n h e i m Central, Hempfield, Penn Manor, Manheim Township and Columbia school districts. About 80 different churches are represented in the school, Griest said. He attributes the school’s longevity to both God’s presence and the dedication of Mount Calvary Church. “The theme of the year is ‘50 Years of God’s Faithfulness,’” he stated. “He has proven Himself to be faithful in a number of different ways to the school. We’re also thankful for the support of Mount Calvary Church. We’re one of the only church-run Christian schools in Lancaster

County, and the church has been unwavering in its support of Christian education. As a result, they’ve really helped to make Christian education affordable to families in the region.” Norris emphasized that the auction and celebration would not be possible without the support of sponsors, including local businesses. benefit the Lebanon VA Hospital targeted on their healing and recovery needs and supportive programming.” Formed in 2008, Chapter 185 is a group of American Legion members who share their common interest in motorcycle riding while also enjoying fellowship and community. “All of our members have a direct connection to the service men and women, as veterans themselves, or their family members,” explained Don Eckar t , Amer ican Legion Riders Chapter 185 chairman. The riders group participates in Memorial Day parades in Mount Joy and Manheim and supports

other fundraising initiatives and benefit rides across other posts and among the Lancaster and Lebanon community. “ T hey have prepared meals for Ronald McDonald House in Hershey and participate in the Adopt-AHighway program,” Eckart said. “In addition, they also host other fun activities within the post like bingo, hold monthly meetings and coordinate group rides.” This year’s New Year’s Day ride will be the 18th year for the event, with proceeds supporting the everyday needs of veterans at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “In February 2026, we donated $42,000, and to

date since the inaugural event, we have donated close to $400,000,” said Eckart. The riders are always looking for new members, Miller said, adding, “While our membership is small, we do mighty things across our community and continue to seek other rider enthusiasts to join us. The American Legion Riders Chapter 185 will host a chicken barbecue on the 26th with pickup starting at 9 a.m. and meals available until sold out. The barbecue will be held at 560 Clay Alley, Mount Joy. Each meal will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, baked beans, applesauce, a roll and butter and a bottle of water. Baked goods will also be available for a small donation per item. “We encourage people to purchase their tickets in advance to guarantee their meal,” said Stacey Miller, American Legion service officer and chicken barbecue co-chair. “We will have a limited supply of extra meals available, which is on a first-come, first-served basis until we are sold out and all presales have been picked up.” The barbecue will benefit local veterans. “The proceeds will help suppor t the Amer ican Legion Riders group’s commitment to supporting veterans and their families,” said Terri Baier, barbecue co-chair. “This is one of the fundraisers aligned to our annual Jan. 1 Frosty Balls & Frozen Suzies Benefit Ride that 100% of proceeds will

she remarked. “Total volunteer hours to keep the ministry running smoothly were 986. From January through June 2026 our statistics show we served 401 adults (and) 195 children and (recorded) 577 volunteer hours.” In total, UCEA volunteers provided more than 1,250 hours of service across programs last year. Trynovich emphasized that anyone can make a difference as a volunteer, describing the best volunteers as people who are cheerful, welcoming and able to work independently after training. “Because of the physical nature of our ministry, all volunteers must be able to stand for up to three hours, retrieve clothing from racks - using an extended hook - overhead and lift up to 25 pounds.” The time commitment for volunteers is flexible, she said, noting that each shift is three hours. “We are only open for shoppers eight shifts per month,” she said. “Volunteers can sign up for as many shifts as they want to.” Fritchman agreed that volunteering can be customiz ed to a person’s schedule. “Our volunteers vary considerably as to the number of hours they participate,” he said. “Some volunteers help weekly, but most volunteers work once or twice a month for a couple of hours each time. This year, Elizabethtown Community Nursery School (ECNS) celebrates 60 years of providing preschool education for young children in the area. Kathy Heil thoroughly e n j oy s g a rd e n i n g ; s h e likes spending time alone with her perennials that thrive in the garden outside of her home. But Heil also enjoys sharing her gardening passion with others. A resident of Manheim To w n s h i p , He i l i s t h e president of the Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County. “It’s therapy and enjoyment,” said Heil. “I enjoy seeing if the birds come, and the insects and all the natural habitat. We also have a patio in the backyard, and we enjoy sharing our meals outside. We also have a water feature to go with the garden.” There’s something calming and medicinal associated with humans physically connecting with an Earth that sustains them. Gardening also has a way of triggering our nurturing mechanisms. “I just like getting my hands in the dirt,” said Heil. “I’ve pretty much always been a gardener. I come from a farming family. I’ve always had an inclination to do some gardening.” Many of the same feelings Heil has about gardening she shares with the other 50 dues-paying

members of the garden club. That bond possesses the power to inspire strong friendships and uplifting camaraderie. “ They ’re women from all kinds of backgrounds,” said Heil. “ That’s what makes it very interesting. You learn about all these pursuits people have. “We share our pursuit of gardening interests,” she added. “We have a lot of fun; we like to learn and share good times. The purpose of the club is to foster interests that are all about gardening.” T he club periodically hosts open houses and embarks on regular field trips. Its meetings feature presentations from gardening experts and an Americanized informal tea that includes coffee and appetizers in addition to tea. N i ne s u b co m m i t te e s support the structure and work of the club. “Being we meet once a month, it’s always great to get together,” said Heil. “We try to get everyone involved. It’s not just an observation program. “Our club is open,” Heil continued. “We just have a joy, and we want to share that. Audiences can expect a fusion of bluegrass, jazz, Americana and pop at the concert. Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Eisenbise has garnered local, regional a nd n at i o n a l acc l a i m through his founding of contemporary bluegrass band Colebrook Road. This has led to performances opening for countless bluegrass greats, including Billy Strings; headlining performances at Nashville’s iconic Station Inn; and being the featured act at regional and national bluegrass festivals. Horning brings a lifetime of studying and performing jazz music professionally to this new musical endeavor. In just 15 years of playing guitar, he has been hired by many of jazz’s modern icons, such as Sean Jones, Warren Wolf and others. Still, he never forgets his central Pennsylvania roots and memories of hearing Colebrook Road perform as a 17-year-old, fueling a fire for folk and bluegrass. Deemed “Professor” by his friends, Horning became

an adjunct professor of music at age 24. The concert represents a fun way for the church to connect with the wider community, Detrick said. “Our concert committee is always searching for quality musicians - brass, organ, string quartets, choral ensembles - in order to provide inspiring concerts for our congregation, the neighborhood and the greater Elizabethtown area,” he shared. “For this specific concert, we wanted to move the venue to a free out-of-doors experience where attendees can come and engage with professional bluegrass musicians and relax in a festive atmosphere.” He said the family-friendly concert, which is free to attend, promises to provide an afternoon of entertaining music. “Participants can expect to hear original music from two highly accomplished guitar pickers, make new friends and enjoy a delicious smorgasbord of food for sale available from a variety of food trucks,” he added. Eisenhower Blvd., Middletown, has announced its next home and cyber School production, “A Midsummer Night at Christmas.” The production is a twist on Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” It will keep all the mix-ups, magic, and mayhem of the original story while giving it a festive Christmas and winter feel. There will be opportunities for students in kindergarten through 12th grade to participate in this production. The production team consists of Katy Baum and Mia Webb. As a response to feedback from past shows, the production’s weekly rehearsal window will be shorter and more focused than previously. Rehearsals will take place on Wednesdays from 1:45 to 5 p.m. at Citizen’s Fire Company No. 1, 272 Second St., Highspire. Each session will be used entirely for rehearsal and production work, with the exception of a 15-minute devotional. Rather than using rehearsal time for a separate social period, HCPAC is looking for parent volunteers who would be willing to organize optional

social activities on nonrehearsal days throughout the production. Stage preparation and dress rehearsals at HCPAC will begin on Sunday, Nov. 29. Performances will take place at HCPAC on Friday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. There is a fee to participate in the production, and families will have fundraising opportunities to offset a portion of the fee. The Lancaster County Bird Club will meet on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster. Michael Moore will present “Sparrows Simplified: Making Sense of LBJs (Little Brown Jobs).” Many birders str ug g le with identifying sparrows, referring to them as LBJs - which stands for “little brown jobs” - or sparrow species. Moore will discuss and then blend the two main approaches to identification - the Peterson System and the Cape May School - to help people identify sparrows. Each of the 16 species of regularly occurring sparrows in the local area will be compared, with discussion of finding and identifying rarities. Moore is a retired biology professor and a past president of the Delaware Ornithological Society. A b i rd e r s i nce m i d d l e school, he completed a doctorate at the University of Washington in the field of endocrinology of white-crowned sparrows. After doing postdoctorate work at the University of Texas in Austin, he served on the biology faculty at Arizona State University for 27 years. He moved to the University of Delaware in 2009 and retired from the institution after 11 years. He has been funded

Over the last 80 years, the club has promoted, advocated for and explored the

beauty of gardening. “In the 1930s, there was a men’s garden club i n L a n c a s te r C o u n t y,” said Heil. “Since they did not allow women, women started their own garden club. In the beginning , new members had to be approved.
