Books, Crafts and Community Fun

During the first week of September, the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., will be bustling with activity

beyond its usual atmosphere. The Friends of the Elizabethtown Public Library will hold its Fall Book Sale from Tuesday, Sept. 2, through Saturday, Sept. 6, and a craft fair will be held on-site as well

on Friday, Sept. 5, and on Saturday.

“Once a year, these two events take place at the same time, providing a fun and entertaining event for the community,” said Friends member Terri Dorwart. “If you’re

Training Will Prepare Volunteers to Aid Children

If you feel called to help others, especially children, the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren invites you to participate in a unique volunteer training event.

The church, located at 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, will host a Children’s Disaster Services (CDS) Volunteer Training from 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, through 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.

“The CDS training program is a 25-hour overnight training that equips volunteers with the skills needed to understand and respond to children who have encountered both human-caused and natural disasters,” explained Sandra Brubaker, witness commission and local coordinator of the training. “Training includes setup and operation, safety procedures, self-care on-site and after returning home and a shelter simulation. The training will also include types of disasters, children and their needs after a disaster, how to respond in a healing manner and using play to begin emotional recovery.”

Participants will sleep on cots loaned to the church through the local chapter of the American Red Cross, simulating the environment disaster relief volunteers would encounter in real life.

“The trainees will be taught how to set up the cots that will be in the fellowship hall for the overnight stay,” Brubaker said.

Children’s Disaster Services is a program administered by Brethren Disaster Ministries,

The Maytown Historical Society will host a Maytown House, Patio, Yard and Garden Tour on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The tour locations are all in the Maytown area and are within driving or walking distance from the museum, located at 4 W. High St.

The event will also feature a meal fundraiser available at the museum with pulled pork barbecue, a baked potato, applesauce, a cookie, a drink and a roll. It will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“People will see unique house styles and decorations,” said Linda Good, vice president of the Maytown Historical Society, who is joining tour co-chairs Monica Cressman and Heidi Hinkel in organizing the event.

There are seven stops on the tour.

The home and garden of

Dave and Sandy Miller will be one of the stops. “One of the original log homes of Maytown, this house has been restored, including the exposing of some of the original logs,” Good said, noting that the backyard features a lush garden.

The house of Mark and Deb Hinkel and the garden of Rich and Cheri Bach will also be on the tour.

Good described the Hinkel home as a “Colonial-style house built in 1890, decorated with Colonial-style furnishings.” It features original floors in some rooms and an exposed brick wall.

The Bachs’ garden was originally a cornfield and is now a vibrant combination of an English and an Italian garden in four sections. It features a large dove house in the middle of the garden which was copied from the Wythe House in Williamsburg.

A stop at Danny and Janet Love’s home will feature tours of the house, patio and garden. “(This is) one of Maytown’s Airbnbs, featuring the old bank, uniquely restored; a newly finished patio and garden; and a repurposed living quarters using many features from the original house.”

Tourgoers will also visit Old Fogie Farm, where they can enjoy a peaceful stroll through a lavish butterfly garden.

The house and garden of Arla, Ken and Ethan Henry will be featured as well.

“The house is completely redone with an exposed log wall and brick hearth,” Good said, adding that the home also features eclectic furnishings; an added-on kitchen; a deck; and a lavish and fragrant herb, vegetable and flower garden.

Mike and Cathy Buckwalter will open their farmhouse and garden for the tour.

“Tour both floors of this beautifully decorated working farmhouse,” Good said. “Many unique antiques (can be found here) including a clawfoot bathtub. The farm was originally owned by Simon Cameron, a member of Lincoln’s cabinet.”

Choosing the properties to feature is not an easy task, Good said, noting that Maytown is full of historic and unique homes.

“We selected homes that were not on previous tours in the last couple years,” she stated. “We also tried to find homes that featured unique décor and style and gardens that were in bloom.”

The tour is a fundraiser for the Maytown Historical Society, which operates a museum on the square in Maytown and holds a variety of public programs. Pro-

ceeds will be used for property maintenance, monthly expenses, new acquisitions and archiving expenses.

“This is one tour you will not want to miss,” Good said. “This is an inexpensive activity and well worth the money. People can expect to learn about the history of some of Maytown’s beautiful homes.”

Tickets for the tour and the meal may be purchased by calling the museum at 717-426-1526 and leaving a message with your name, contact number and number of tour and meal tickets. People may also send an email to maytown history@aol.com. Tickets may be purchased at the door on the day of the tour. Meal tickets will be available until sold out. Some stops on the tour are not ADA compliant.

she shared, noting that it provides a safe environment and comforting presence for children impacted by traumatic events.

“Since 1980, there have been 339 disasters where 3,935 volunteers worked with 120,881 children,” she said. “Children’s Disaster Services, so far in 2025, has served in four states in 11 locations caring for 736 children. Examples of places that have been served are: Los Angeles wildfires, Missouri tornadoes, Texas floods and the terrorist attack in New Orleans.”

CDS has a Memorandum of Understanding with the American Red Cross to serve in shelters or assistance centers, and at times, volunteers are also called to serve with FEMA or local/state emergency management agencies.

As Brubaker explained, Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren was asked to host this training weekend by CDS. She noted that there has not been a training weekend on the East Coast in several years, and that this is the first time the Elizabethtown church will host this event.

“This is an excellent way to serve the church by helping people and especially children during very difficult circumstances,” she shared, adding that serving provides a close-up view

of disaster and the reality that impacts the victims of the disaster. “(It’s about) giving of one’s self by following the Scripture of loving your neighbor whether they are near or far.”

The training is open to people age 18 and older.

“This event can bring many people together from our local community and people from other states that wish to train for this meaningful service,” Brubaker remarked. “This is also an opportunity to share our own congregation with others, introducing them to what our denomination and congregation seek: to live the love of God as revealed in Jesus Christ, peacefully, simply and together.”

A registration fee for the training will cover materials and trainer costs. Meals and overnight accommodations will be provided by the church. There is a discount for registering for the training before Friday, Sept. 26. There is also a reduced fee for students age 18 and older.

A list of articles participants need to bring with them to the training will be provided on the registration form. Transportation may also be arranged to the church from the Harrisburg International Airport, if needed.

For more information or to register for the training, visit www.brethren.org/cds.

Labor Day Auction Planned

Hospice & Community Care will hold its 41st Labor Day Auction at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 101 Park Ave., Quarryville, on Saturday, Aug. 30, and Monday, Sept. 1, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Labor Day Auction, presented by Rodgers & Associates, is free to attend, with proceeds benefiting patients and families receiving hospice and palliative care and grief support.

The event will feature a wide variety of new and used items up for bids, an array of gift certificates and gift baskets, and six specialty auctions. A highend auction on Sept. 1 will include vacations, fine jewelry, handyman services, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and handcrafted items. A giveaway drawing will give ticketholders a chance to win a 2025 Chevy Trax. The event will also feature Amish-made food.

The specialty auctions on Aug. 30 will be Art, Day of Care, Tools, and the Plant Auction. The Art Auction has original paintings from well-known local artists, as well as the debut of the 2025 Memorial Garden Ornament. At the Day of Care Auction, attendees may purchase a day of care for one patient. The Tool Auction will feature new and used power and hand tools donated by local construction companies

and individuals. The Plant Auction will take place on both Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 this year, and it will feature hundreds of plants donated by many local greenhouses and florists.

The Sept. 1 specialty auctions will be Sports Memorabilia, a dedicated Quilt Auction, and the Plant Auction. The Sports Auction will showcase items from regional, state, and national icons with guest auctioneer and “Sports Talk” host Eric May. A specialty Quilt Auction will include hand-quilted pieces from the Amish, quilters’ groups, and volunteers, as well as gently used quilts in all sizes.

Hospice & Community Care has been partnering with local businesses, individuals, the Amish community, and volunteers to grow this event over the past 41 years. This year, there are more than 80 sponsors. All proceeds from the Labor Day Auction directly benefit patients and families receiving hospice and palliative care, as well as grief support through the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss. In 2024, the Labor Day Auction raised more than $1 million.

For a schedule of events, a listing of items up for bid, and more, visit www .LaborDayAuction.org or call 717-295-3900.

Volunteers in Ankeny, Iowa, participate in a Children’s Disaster Services training.

not familiar with what the library has to offer, it’s a great time to get acquainted with the many programs and activities available as well as find some great deals on books. Afterwards, folks can browse the vendor tables and then take a break to relax and enjoy a coffee in the library’s café.”

The book sale will begin with a special event on Sept. 2 from 2 to 7 p.m. Admission to that event is free for Friends members or by a small fee for the general public. The sale will continue with free admission from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, and Thursday, Sept. 4; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 6. Fill-a-bag sales will be held for one price on Friday and for a discounted price on Saturday.

“If you enjoy reading and are looking for a great deal, this is the place for you,” Dorwart said. “We will have over 10,000 books on sale this fall. It’s a great selection of adult fiction; nonfiction; history; biography; cookbooks; craft, hobby and art books; and a wonderful selection of children’s paperback and hardback books. We also have some vintage materials generously donated by the community.”

She noted that books by popular authors, including James Patterson, John Grisham, Elin Hil-

derbrand and Jodi Picoult, will be among the selections, and CDs and DVDs will also be for sale.

“If you are looking for a popular author, to build or complete a collection or just want first choice, the Preview Day is for you,” she said.

She said that many people who attend the book sale are not aware that the Friends operate a bookstore on the main level of the library, open year-round the same hours as the library.

“The bookstore and book sale exist through generous donations from our community and as a result of hours of service by dedicated volunteers, who sort through all donations, stock the bookstore shelves and work in the bookstore and at the sale,” Dorwart said.

The Craft Fair will run on the main floor of the library from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 5 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 6.

“The official name is ‘Elizabethtown Public Library Craft Fair with a Small Business Flair,’” said Dorinda Nolan, who helps to organize the event with Suzanne Hetrick. “We encourage handcrafters and small business owners to participate in the fair. There will be over 20 vendors at the craft fair. More than half of the vendors have participated for several years.”

Participants will sell handmade

jewelry, handcrafted cards, acrylic-coated glass vases, crocheted and knitted items, hair scrunchies and accessories, hand-poured resin items, doll clothes for all sizes of American Girl dolls, body care products, handmade kitchen items, dog scarves, suncatchers, chocolate bombs and more.

“One vendor makes unique magnets and plant stickers from recycled beverage cans. The magnets are shaped like butterflies, flamingos, snowmen, etc.,” Nolan said. “The Fiber Artists, a group of crafters that meet weekly at the library to work on craft projects, will have a table selling items that the members have donated. All proceeds from this table are donated to the library.”

Nolan and Hetrick encourage people to come to the book sale and also visit the craft fair.

“Shoppers will find unique items for themselves as well as gifts for friends and family,” Nolan commented. “They will also be supporting small local businesses. We like to encourage shoppers to visit all of the vendors at the fair. So, we ask each vendor to provide a prize that they display at their table and a (giveaway) jar.”

Shoppers will receive a booklet describing the vendors as well as two giveaway tickets.

“The shopper can drop their ticket with their contact info into the jar next to the vendor prize that they are interested in winning,” Nolan said. “If they buy an item from a craft vendor, they receive additional tickets for more chances to win vendor prizes.”

Entrance to the library is from the back of the building, accessible from Peach Alley, where a free parking lot is available. Customers are encouraged to bring their own bags or boxes. To learn more about the library, visit https://etown publiclibrary.org. To volunteer, stop by the bookstore or email Etown Books@hotmail.com.

Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. It will feature vendors, information and community resources.

Last year, the event was called the “55 & Up Expo,” but organizers lowered the age to 50 specifically to broaden participation and better reflect the many programs, services and activities available to residents starting at that age, Ogilvie shared.

“The expo will feature a wide range of returning vendors, including Masonic Village, Elizabethtown Area Senior Center and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging - PACE Program,” she said. “This year we are excited to welcome several new participants, including ClearCaptions, Visiting Angels, Traditions of Hershey and the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA). These are just a few of the new vendors joining the expo this year, offering

even more resources and services for attendees to explore.”

Complimentary refreshments, including coffee and light snacks, will be available throughout the event for attendees, and many vendors have provided door prizes, which will be drawn throughout the day and include gift baskets, gift cards and other items.

“Attendees must be present to win the regular door prizes,” Ogilvie explained. “A passport card will also be available for attendees to get signed by each vendor; completed cards will be entered into the final door prize drawing. The winner of the final door prize does not need to be present and will be contacted after the expo.”

Rep. Jones serves approximately 67,000 residents in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. His area, the 98th legislative district, includes all of the Elizabethtown Area and Donegal school districts.

Along with the expo, Jones holds Coffee & Conversation events throughout the year. The next one is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 11, from 9 to 10 a.m. at his office, 222 S. Market St., Suite 103, Elizabethtown.

Ogilvie encourages people to come to the expo to find resources and information.

“Attendees can expect a welcoming environment with nearly 30 vendors, free health screenings, giveaways, refreshments and opportunities to connect with local service providers,” she said. “The expo provides the community with in-person opportunities to interact with government agencies, ask questions and access resources directly. It is open to anyone who wants resources for themselves or for family members. Whether you’re looking for health care resources, home services or community engagement activities, there’s something for everyone.”

The 50 & Up Expo is free to attend. People should park in the lot behind the church and enter from the back of the building, following the posted signs. Ramp access is provided for easy entry.

For more information, visit www.reptomjones.com, follow Rep. Jones on Facebook or contact the district office at 717-367-5525.
