If you’re an older adult, mark your calendar for Tuesday, Sept. 15. State Rep. Tom Jones will host the fourth annual 50 & Up Expo from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. “The free expo will feature more than 35 vendors and government agencies offering information, resources and services for adults age 50 and up, caregivers and family members,” said Sharon Ogilvie, legislative aide and outreach and event coordinator for Jones. “The exhibitors represent a wide range of services and resources, including health care and wellness, financial and retirement planning, senior living and in-home care, veterans’ services, government programs, legal and estate planning, lifelong learning, hospice and end-of-life services, home improvement, tourism and local community resources.” The event is meant to be interactive, she said. “Attendees will have the opportunity to speak directly with representatives, ask questions and learn about programs and services available to them and their families,” she explained. “Rep. Jones’ office will also have a legislative information table where constituents can stop by to ask questions or learn more about state government services and programs.” A variety of door prizes will also be awarded. 17th annual Craft Fair With a Small Business Flair. The book sale will open with a Preview Day on Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the library, 10 S. Market St. This event is for Friends members or by admission for the general public. The sale will continue with free admission from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9; Thursday, Sept. 10; and Friday, Sept. 11. On Saturday, Sept. 12, the sale will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fill-a-bag sales will be held on Friday and Saturday. The Craft Fair With a Small Business Flair will run on Sept. 11 from 3 to 7 p.m. and Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The book sale will feature adult hardback and paperback fiction, biographies, history, cookbooks, nonfiction, hardback and paperback children’s books, CDs and DVDs. Customers are encouraged to bring their own bag, except on fill-a-bag sale days. The Friends operate a bookstore on the first floor of the library as well. “ With each purchase at the sale, patrons will receive a 15% off coupon, which can be used in the bookstore during the sale and for a limited time after the sale,” Dorwart said. “The bookstore features more current selections and is open year-round during library hours.” T he sale will feature some new initiatives this year, including a Blind Date With a Book section. “Carefully curated by our dedicated team of volunteers, these books are the perfect surprise gift for yourself or a friend,” Dorwart said. “You choose these mystery books by the descriptions on the wrapping and the cute and unique items attached.” The Friends also listened to customer feedback and will offer a better breakdown of nonfiction books, separating the books into categories such as biographies, gardening, religious and sports. “The fiction section is broken down by trades, hardbacks and paperbacks, a s we l l a s a ‘ Favor i te Authors’ section where authors such as James Patterson and John Grisham
noted. “Our vintage collection has expanded. If you’re looking for a rare first edition or unique copies of an old favorite, you just might find it on the table set aside to display our collection.” While the book sale takes place in the lower level of the library, the craft fair will be set up throughout the main floor. “The craft show has a variety of vendors, and many of them have been participating for several years,” said Dorinda Nolan, craft fair organizer. “It’s an opportunity to shop for unique items and to support local makers.” Items for sale will include lacy crocheted shawls and ponchos, some with coordinating jewelry; handmade cards; handcrafted wood items, such as cutting boards and birdhouses; magnets made from recycled beverage cans; vintage inspired jewelry; amigurumi; crocheted and knitted scarves and hats; small paintings; polymer-resin crafts; kids’ bracelets and hair scrunchies; candles; and more. Each vendor will also display a giveaway item at each booth, and shoppers will have the opportunity to win the items. Winners will be drawn on Saturday at the close of the craft fair. Shopping at either the book sale or the craft fair is a great way to support operations of the library, Dorwart said. “One hundred percent of the proceeds from the book sale are donated to the library and used to support library programs and needs in whatever way they see fit,” she explained. “The vendor fees for the craft show support the library. Also, the Fiber Ar tists group that meets weekly at the library will be offering a variety of items for sale that members have made. All proceeds from the sales at their booth are donated to the library.” She added that the Friends group is always looking for volunteers, who sort donations, work in the bookstore and give their time to the book sales held twice a year. Bus Trip to Annapolis Set The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County will hold its fall bus trip on Thursday, Oct. 1. Participants will visit Annapolis., Md., to gain insight into three historic homes. Participants will board the coach bus at Lancaster Shopping Center, 1625 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, at 8:15 a.m. and depart at 8:30 a.m. The group will begin its exploration at the William Paca House, a 1760s Georgian mansion that boasts a 2-acre garden and offers a peek into the inner workings of an upper-class household during the Revolutionary period. The house was restored in 1965 using historical artwork and archeological excavations. After enjoying a box lunch on the Paca Garden Terrace, attendees will hear a presentation on the ongoing James Brice House restoration project. Gretna Music has announced the final concerts of its 2026 summer season, taking place at the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna. In addition to mainsta ge per formances and special events, the schedule includes 20-minute First Listen concerts featuring local high school and college-age students. LancasterHistory will offer History Happy Hour on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Exchange at the Marriott Lancaster Penn Square, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. History Happy Hour combines a history presentation with a relaxed social atmosphere. The upcoming program, “Same Streets, Different Century,” will be presented by LancasterHistory historian and curator Stephanie Townrow. Looking out over the streets below, Townrow will speak about

They meet the urgent physical needs of Indigenous people while creating opportunities to evangelize, disciple, teach and live out the Gospel message. The banquet will also feature updates on the organization from executive director Matt Durkee, as well as a call to action to support the ministry. A variety of door prizes and giveaways will be awarded as well. Proceeds from the banquet will benefit operations of the nonprofit, which formed more than 30 years ago. While the nonprofit originated in Mansfield, Mo., in 1992, it moved to central Pennsylvania in early 2000. “Friends in Action is a little bit different than church planting,” Bachert said. “We come alongside those doing the evangelism by providing infrastructure and support systems. We drill the wells, renovate clinics and provide hands-on partnership. We don’t send pastors, but instead we support those doing the work through service projects that help to move the Gospel forward.”

Titled “Too Hot to Ignore: A Climate Action Picnic,” it will be held at Pavilion 31 in D.F. Buchmiller County Park, 97 S. Ledwith Drive, Lancaster. It is open to the public.
