A New Path to Adventure For many years, Jake Sitler of Marietta was a professional cyclist. He raced in Europe and had an impressive career, but in 2018 he was hit by a car, leaving him with a broken back and an uncertain future. Although he made a comeback in 2022 when he represented the United States in the Mountain Bike World Championships, he shifted his focus to running Endo Café & Collective, a wellness endeavor with a location in Lancaster city and in Marietta. But the passion for mountain biking never left the father of two young boys, and he wanted a way to share that passion with the community. Thanks to Sitler’s efforts, the Marietta Woods Trail Project will soon be open to anyone who wants to mountain bike, from novices to avid riders. “I know how to help people get into the sport, and I know that there’s not a lot of accessible, easy mountain biking trails in central Pennsylvania,” he said. “The area is very rocky and full of roots.” Sitler, who claims he’s ridden on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail “more than anyone in the history of Marietta,” hoped to find a way to make mountain biking available to anyone, and he discovered an opportunity when he saw an old lumber yard for sale along the trail. He pitched an idea to Marietta Borough officials: Could he recruit SAMBA, the Susquehanna Area Mountain Bike Association, to help oversee the project and install a bicycle playground and create mountain bike trails off the river trail? “I told them I would raise all of the money needed,” Sitler

is welcome.” There will also be some games available to play for free, including oversized yard games. “I’m envisioning the prizes for the carnival games to be sort of ‘Chuck E. Cheese’ style,” Hookway said. “People can win tickets and then buy prizes with them at a prize table.” Bingo prizes have been donated by community and church members and will include gift cards. Food will be available for purchase from Kurtz’s Concessions, including hot dogs, cotton candy, snow cones, funnel cakes, fried Oreos and beverages. The

church will provide freshly popped popcorn as well. Proceeds from the carnival will benefit students in both the Manheim Central and Eastern Lebanon County school districts to help fund meals for students in need. “B oth churches have really great feeding ministries,” Hammer said. “St. Luke’s has a ministry where they offer a noontime lunch on Thursday and a Sunday evening meal, and it’s all free for the community. Penryn has a community food pantry. We thought it would be nice to support a need in our community

The members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Penryn and St. Luke Lutheran Church in Schaefferstown are always looking for ways to connect with the wider community. T his year, they’re inviting everyone out for a carnival. The carnival will be held at the Penryn church at 1258 Newport Road on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. It will feature food, fun and fellowship. “We wanted to do something to give back to the community,” said pastor Angie Hammer, who serves at both churches. “This is a way to thank the community for their help with various projects we do and a way to support families in our community.” For more than 100 years, the church has held a summer picnic, but this year that wasn’t possible due to updates needed at the picnic grove. So, the church members pivoted and decided to take advantage of the space behind the church, known as “The Backyard,” which features a playground, plenty of room for activi-

ties and café string lights for ambiance. Although the event is a carnival, there will not be any rides. Instead, the event will focus on carnival-style games, including a fishbowl game, a Ping-Pong cup game, a bean bag toss and more. A highlight of the event will be a dunk tank, where Hammer has been “voluntold” to be ready to get wet. “We’re very excited to have our pastor in the dunk tank,” said Amanda Hookway, event chair. “It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.” Bingo will also be available for people of all ages to play, and prizes will be awarded for both the carnival games and bingo. People will have the option of two types of wristbands for the event one that includes the games and one for bingo. JP Welliver, whom organizers describe as a “local celebrity” known for his charisma and his appearance on “Wheel of Fortune,” will be the caller for bingo. “He’s ver y enter taining. He’s a fan favorite,” Hammer said. “ You can come and play bingo to your heart’s content. Everyone

Climbing the trees is not permitted. The Friends of the Tanger Arboretum will offer a nighttime Nature Series program called “The Nocturnal World of Moths” on Saturday, Aug. 22. The event will take place from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Carriage House at the LancasterHistory Museum & Research Center. Lancaster Conservancy naturalist Keith Williams will speak about the biology and ecology of moths, which are diverse insects and are well adapted to avoid predation and find love in the dark. A moth lighting will follow the presentation. A moth lighting, also called a mothing or light-sheeting, is an activity where an artificial light source is used to attract moths and other nighttime insects to a white sheet, allowing for individuals to look at the specimens up close. Williams is a naturalist, educator, writer, and photographer. He has a Bachelor of Science in environmental biology from

It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neuro Neighborhood BY JEFF FALK

There’s a great new nonprofit in Lancaster County that’s been founded by Neffsville resident Greta Myers. It’s called “Neuro Neighborhood.” “ We u s e d ‘neig hb orhood ’ to g ive people a welcoming invitation to something big ger than themselves,” said Myers, who also serves as executive director of the organization. “Neighborhoods contain people who come together to support one another. We all know how important it is to have a support system, and we felt that use of the title ‘neighborhood’ would exemplify our support. “Our goal is to continue to get the word out so we can reach as many people as possible,” continued Myers. “The more people who know about the Neuro Neighborhood, the more people we can support.” Founded in March of 2025, Neuro Neighborhood is an all-volunteer organization designed to help people dealing with neurological conditions

like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Those neurological conditions can occur through injury or a deterioration of the central ner vous system, which includes our brains and spinal cords. For now, Myers is operating Neuro Neighborhood out of her residence. “Spinal cord injuries or brain injuries can be caused by traumatic events to either area of our central nervous system, or lack of blood flow to that area,” said Myers. “Symptoms widely vary between neurological conditions including movement, sensory and cognitive changes. Cognitive changes can include difficulty with memory, sequencing or planning. Some movement symptoms can include increased tone and reflexes in muscles, difficulty initiating movement and weakness affecting many muscle groups. “Speech and breathing can be impacted as well, because both of these actions are controlled by our muscles,” she added. The car show began after Wood joined the Manheim Sertoma Club four years ago. “I was thinking, ‘How can I help our club organize a new venue to raise money for par ticular nonprofit organizations in the community?’” she recalled. “I love classic cars, the muscle sound of the eng ine and the image of the different and unique vehicles rolling through the streets. I loved going to car shows with my parents when I was a teenager with their 1969 Camaro. The music w a s g re a t ; t h e p e o p l e and stories were interesting to listen to, and there were so many great classic cars that caught my eye.” She presented the idea of a car show to the club members, and the event was created to bring the community together and raise money for people in need. Proceeds from the show will benefit Hope Served, which will use its portion of the proceeds for job training and employment for individuals with disabilities; Manheim Community Life Group, which will use its portion to support ongoing programs at the Home on Ferdinand, which includes providing individualized case management for each of the residents and free counseling; and Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community, which will use its portion of the proceeds to help meet the gap of $150 cost per day to provide skilled nursing care to its residents. Representatives from all three nonprofits will be on-site during the car show. “Last year we had 240 registered show cars from all over Lancaster,

L ebanon and Dau phin counties at our show,” Wood shared. “Family and friends that came out to support all the nonprofits accounted for more than 500 people in attendance. It was amazing the amount of community support.” A nationally affiliated nonprofit public service organization, the Manheim Sertoma Club has ser ved the community of Manheim and the surrounding area since 1958, said Skip Shimko, club president. He explained that “Sertoma” is an acronym taken from the club’s mission, “Service to Mankind.” Pulling off a successful car show requires a team effort, Wood noted. “We have great appreciation to have the support of so many businesses and individuals within the community who have s p o n s o r e d t h i s y e a r ’s show and in years past,” s h e s a i d . “ We h a v e a co m m u n i t y w i t h h u g e helping hearts willing to listen and give for the c a re o f o t h e rs . T h a n k you!” The deadline to preregister for the car show is Sept. 1, and anyone who registers by that date will receive a goodie bag. There is a discount for preregistering. People may also register their vehicle on the day of the show for an additional cost. The car show is a cashonly event; an ATM will be available on-site. The Manheim Sertoma Club meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Manheim Scout Hall, 1 Scout Alley. The club is always se ek ing ne w members. In some of our most challenging times in life, we all need a neighborhood to count on.” Overseen by a five-person board of directors, Neuro Neighborhood ser ves about 200 individuals, mainly adults from L ancaster County and surrounding areas. Currently situated in the initial phase of its planned grow th process, Neuro Neighborhood ’s future goals include adding physical therapy services, incorporating a multidisciplinary team, locating a physical office space, adding wellness programming and partnering with similar organizations in the community. “As I continued to study to become a board-certified Neurological Clinical Specialist, I also began searching for more community resources for my patients ,” s aid Myers . “ U n fo r t u n a te l y, I h a d trouble finding the types of resources and support that my patients were looking for, so I started writing those ideas down as a list. Then I did research and connected with other organizations around the country that were trying to incorporate a better continuum of care and suppor t for adults with neurological conditions. My list continued to grow, and I found others who wanted to help me make that list a reality. Thus, we created Neuro Neighborhood.”

“We have community members that chose to dine with us each week, and overall, the community has responded very positively,” Henry shared. “We have served an average of 37 meals per week over our first 13 weeks. That is nearly 500 meals served.” Ever yone is invited to come out for a meal, and no registration is required. “Community members can expect a welcoming environment where they can share a filling meal with a neighbor and connect with an ECHOS case manager to learn about additional community resources,” Henr y explained. “As available, we have provided additional food items, cleaning products, hygiene products and other household items for community members in need.” ECHOS was created in response to a local homelessness issue that brought the community together. After a father and son were found living in a park in Elizabethtown, residents, local churches and the school district joined forces to open the borough’s first overnight shelter. The shelter opened at St. Paul’s United Methodist C hurch in December 2015, providing a warm, dry and safe place for 13 guests during its first season. As organizers worked with shelter guests, they quickly realized many people needed more than just a place to spend the night. Community leaders applied for grant funding to expand those services, and the effort paid off. ECHOS officially launched in July 2016 with Elizabethtown College serving as its fiscal agent, and the organization received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status later that year. Over the past decade, ECHOS has grown from a seasonal shelter into a regional organization serving Elizabethtown, B ainbr idge, R heems , Mount Joy, Maytown and Marietta. Today, staff members provide assistance to more than 400 households each year through 10 programs

To date, he’s raised upward of $40,000 through donations from local businesses and individuals. The first phase of the M a r i e t t a Wo o d s Tra i l Project is the construction of a bicycle playground, an area where bikers can practice on rollers, berms, bridges and other features designed to build skills and confidence. “It’s meant to develop the smallest kid on a bike to teens or adults looking to get into mountain biking,” Sitler explained. “It’s going to have places parents can sit and watch their kids ride laps and learn skills development.” The project also includes a little under 40 acres of ground through which Sitler and his team will sculpt 2 miles of mountain bike trails. Eventually, he hopes to extend the trail system down to Columbia, offering 7 to 8 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails to complement the Northwest River Trail. The bicycle playground was constructed over two weeks in late July and early August, and it’s located near Front Street Park, 502 E. Front St., Marietta. The trail construction is expected to be completed

by Labor Day weekend. Along with encouraging the public to come out and discover mountain biking, Sitler noted that the space will be used by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League (PICL), which includes students from Donegal School District. “Society as a whole, we’re removing spaces for our children to be outside in nature and be active,” Sitler said. “Screens are taking over, and it’s harder for people to find ways to get outside safely. I want this to be a community-minded space and a project for the community.” Sitler estimates he and his team have put in more than 150 hours of work so far on the project, and he’s hoping to hold a launch party in early September when the first phase of the project is complete. He noted that the project has relied on numerous sponsors, who have donated everything from money to tons of dirt.
