A White Night for a Worthy Cause

“Food insecurity in Elizabethtown is much bigger than anyone thinks,” said Dr. Ed White of White Family Dental. “We want to do our part to come alongside other groups and other efforts and supplement what they are doing to help.”

With that in mind, the dental practice launched White Out Hunger. The fundraiser will return on Saturday, Aug. 8. It will be held outside at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, from 4 to 8 p.m.

“We’re always trying to come up with new ideas and new ways to support the community,” White said, noting that he got the idea for White Out Hunger after learning

about a similar event, called Fete en Blanc, held in Lancaster. “Everybody wears white, we have music, we supply the tables and linens, and people bring their own beverages and a picnic meal. It’s

really a lot of fun.”

Along with wearing all white, participants bring their own meal, including drinks, as well as table settings. The festivities will include live music and dancing.

Dogs Are LKC Members’ Best Friends

For members of the Lancaster Kennel Club (LKC), dogs are more than just pets. Dogs are companions, partners, and members of the family.

One of LKC’s goals is to explore and reinvent humans’ relationships with canines.

“If you have a good bond with your dog, they will look up to you,” said Dave Martin, who’s been LKC’s president for five years. “They’ll follow you, and you have to take care of them. You can make bonds through walks and through tricks.”

LKC meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesdays of August, October, February and April at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public.

“Purebred dogs are our focus,” said Martin. “Every breed was bred for a special purpose. When dogs become pets, their purpose can be lost. We’re trying to promote purebreds, responsible dog ownership and responsible pet ownership.

For the second year in a row, the Elizabethtown Area High School esports team won the state championship, and now the team will soon have its own space on the school’s campus.

State Sen. James Andrew Malone recently announced an $80,000 state grant he helped secure for the school to install a state-of-the-art, ADA-accessible esports arena. The award was made possible through discretionary funds that

There are more than 60 breeds of dogs owned by LKC members.

“They’re just everyday people who love dogs,” said Martin. “Not everybody in our club is showing their dogs.”

Martin shares his Centerville-area home with two Norwich terriers, Daisy Mae and Otis.

“They’re small,” said Martin. “They’re faithful. They’re fun little dogs.”

A full voting member of the American Kennel Club, LKC can trace its origins to 1921.

“In the 1920s, it was just like-minded people coming together,” said Martin. “People showed their dogs, and some traveled. They bred purebred dogs.”

DMVA Available to Assist With Locating Forms

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is available to provide assistance to veterans who have lost their DD Form 214 (DD-214), DD

Form 215 (DD-215) or other military documents. DMVA may be able to help veterans locate these documents so they can get credit for time served and receive benefits they have earned.

The DD-214 is a Department of Defense document issued upon a service member’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans’ organizations.

Without this document, there could be significant delays when a veteran seeks benefits earned through his or her military service. The DD-215 is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD-214.

The easiest way to manage military documents and avoid confusion in searching for them is to make sure they are safely filed immediately upon leaving the military.

Schulz Named to Fulton Board

Fulton Financial Corporation has announced the appointment of David S. Schulz as a member of its board of directors for a term commencing Sept. 14 and expiring at Fulton’s 2027 annual meeting of shareholders.

With the addition of Schulz, Fulton’s Board will have 11 members, and Schulz will serve on the audit and risk committees. He has also been appointed to the board of directors of Fulton’s banking subsidiary, Fulton Bank, N.A.

Schulz served as senior vice president and chief

financial officer of Wesco International Inc. from 2016 to June 2020, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Wesco from June 2020 to February 2026, and executive vice president and special adviser to the CEO of Wesco from February 2026 until his retirement on May 31.

Prior to joining Wesco, Schulz was senior vice president and chief operating officer of Armstrong Flooring Inc. and was previously senior vice president and chief financial officer of Armstrong World Industries Inc. and

Before receiving the grant, Elizabethtown Area High School’s growing Unified esports team had no official funding from the school district.

Coach Austin Henderson and the student-athletes relied on fundraising to support the club and cover travel expenses for

competitions. Despite having limited resources and no permanent practice space, the team has already earned impressive accomplishments, including Pennsylvania Interscholastic Esports Association (PIEA) state championships in Overwatch and Marvel Rivals. In addition, three seniors have received esports-specific scholarship offers.

“I was especially proud to support this project because the students and their coach, Austin Henderson, have achieved great success while supporting the program through the club’s fundraising efforts alone,” Malone stated.

The high school has had an esports team since 2018. Henderson became involved with the team three years ago, and he acknowledges that esports might not be a subject many people understand well.

Bicycle Club Plans Rides

The Lancaster Bicycle Club will hold two rides through scenic roads in August. The club will host its annual Ice Cream Lovers’ Ride on Saturday, Aug. 15, and the Covered Bridge Classic on Sunday, Aug. 16.

The Ice Cream Lovers’ Ride - voted Best Ride in the State of Pennsylvaniawill offer two scenic route options designed for riders who enjoy quiet backroads, rolling farmland, and local ice cream favorites. Riders participating in a 40-mile route will depart from Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, at 8:15 a.m., with stops at Bird-in-Hand Bakery, Lapp Valley Farm, and Oregon Dairy. Those taking part in a 28-mile route will depart from the church at 8:30 a.m., visiting Birdin-Hand Bakery, Hayloft Ice Cream, and Oregon Dairy. Riders can expect peaceful roads, farmland views, and the chance to enjoy some of Lancaster County’s most beloved ice cream destinations. Weather permitting, the ride offers a relaxed, family-friendly morning filled with scenery and local flavor.

Like other sports, esports players train rigorously, rely on teamwork to succeed and use skills such as strategic planning to win. The sport requires sharp mental skills and quick decision making under pressure.

“We are incredibly grateful to Sen. Malone for recognizing the value of our esports program and the opportunities it creates for students,” said Elizabethtown Area School District superintendent Tom Strickler. “This grant will help us provide a dedicated space where students can develop meaningful skills, build lasting relationships, and pre -

pare for success both in competition and beyond.”

They host tournaments throughout the year featuring dozens of high schools from across Pennsylvania. When you start a nonprofit, you’re focused on the work and not necessarily thinking in terms of future mergers. The founders of Hope Inspire Love kept their noses to the grindstone, and natural evolution produced organic growth.

“My heart was always collaboration and participation,” said Amy Thurston, who, along with her husband, Steve, founded Hope Inspire Love nine years ago. “Did I think about a merger? No. We weren’t coming here to reinvent what someone else was doing. She’s Somebody’s Daughter was doing things other people weren’t doing. You’re taking the strengths of both organizations and putting them together.”

More than simply a merger, Hope Inspire Love and She’s Somebody’s Daughter recently joined forces, pooled resources and intertwined missions all in the name of fighting human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The names have remained the same under the umbrella of a single nonprofit. Hope Inspire Love will serve as the lead organization, and the Lemoyne-based She’s Somebody’s Daughter will perform outreach services.

“This was just a beautiful next step,” said Amy. “This allows us to better impact and really help survivors

Operating under the tagline “Better Together, Stronger Together,” Hope Inspire Love, which is headquartered at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, now also operates offices in Lemoyne and Chambersburg.

Ultimately, it was a conversation at a conference between Thurston and She’s Somebody’s Daughter officials that got the ball rolling toward a merger.

Thurston took the idea to Hope Inspire Love’s board of directors in January of 2025, and by the fall of that year, the proper documentation was submitted to

We have to be willing to consider what’s best for the people we serve. Neither organization was looking for this, but this came about. We didn’t force it. It was meant to be.” Amy and Steve Thurston founded Hope Inspire Love in the basement of their home in 2017. The organization has performed a wealth of good in those short years since.

“It started as a dream of something we had to do,” said Amy. “It started with awareness and education. We have expanded our services, and now we have over 100 volunteers giving back. If you look at the years that have passed, we’ve been able to put together a strong team that supports the mission and community.”

As White explained, the practice held its first White Out Hunger before the pandemic.

“A lot of people didn’t think it was going to work,” he recalled. “But it was a huge success. We raised $50,000 and had a big turnout.”

Last year marked the return of the event since the pandemic, and White is excited to continue offering a fun night out for a good cause.

All of the proceeds from White Out Hunger will support four local organizations focused on fighting food insecurity. Bear Bags of Elizabethtown provides backpacks filled with food on weekends for families who rely on school meals, as well as “open shop” events over the summer where families can select nonperishables, frozen foods and more. Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) helps people experiencing housing instability with emergency shelter, case management and a new weekly hot meal program launching this summer. Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown

serves hundreds of families through its food pantry and hopes to expand its services soon. Elizabethtown Area Senior Center offers daily activities, companionship and meals. It’s working to expand its senior breakfast program, which has nearly doubled in participants in the past year.

“We often do not see the needs of others until we open our eyes and look for them,” White said. “Each of these organizations fills a vital gap - and with your support, we can help them do even more.”

White’s practice is no stranger to fundraising. The office has been involved with Smiles for Life for 27 years. It’s a national organization that raises funds for children’s charities, with proceeds split evenly between local and national charities.

“We average $30,000 to $35,000 a year, and half of that stays local. We picked Bear Bags to receive it,” White said. “We’ve raised about $700,000 for children’s charities through this program.”

Along with enjoying a bring-your-own meal, people can listen to live

music from Corty Byron and Grant Bryan during White Out Hunger. Byron performs Americana, roots-driven blues and more, while Bryan is a country music artist.

White noted that White Out Hunger relies on a variety of sponsors to be successful, as well as support from the dental practice itself.

“Every single dollar we raise that night goes to the community,” he said.

He hopes people will come out for White Out Hunger to enjoy fellowship and fun.

“Come be a part of the community, a part of solving this issue and helping people who don’t have enough food to eat,” he said. “Be part of the solution and have some fun at the same time. Reconnect with old friends and meet new ones.”

Sites Needed for Air Quality Sensors

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group PurpleAir Monitoring Initiative, which is placing air quality sensors throughout Lancaster County, is seeking volunteers to host additional air-sensing devices that it plans to purchase with a $2,600 Conservation Grant from the Sierra Club’s Pennsylvania Chapter.

PurpleAir is a hyper-local air quality monitoring network that transmits data through a Wi-Fi connection to a real-time, public access map. While not as robust as government-regulated sensors like the two currently in Lancaster

County, PurpleAir’s sensors are considered fairly accurate for particulate matter, and they serve as a supplement to the government-regulated sensors.

Areas in Lancaster County without the Lancaster Group’s PurpleAir sensors include Columbia, Conestoga, Drumore, East Petersburg, Gap, Intercourse, Landisville, Leola, Lititz, Marietta, Millersville, Mount Joy, Paradise, Quarryville, Washington Borough, and Willow Street. People residing in these locales who are interested in hosting one of the devices may email sierra clubevent@gmail.com and

ask for an application, which covers the requirements for becoming a monitor host. Other areas of the county with existing or proposed future sources of air pollution will also be considered.

When positioning of the additional PurpleAir sensors is complete, the Lancaster Group will have installed about 18 of them at various locations in the county. Assessing Lancaster County’s air quality became a goal of the Lancaster Group as a result of the American Lung Association’s annual surveys, which consistently give the county

low marks for short-term particle pollution. The aim of the initiative is to increase the amount of particulate matter data available to the general public, providing a more complete picture of the dangers associated with fine air particles and their effects on the health of local residents.
