Thirteen years ago, officer Mike Shetter of Northwest Regional Police Department suggested that the department join others in the area in marking National Night Out, an event to promote community connections. Despite having no money in the budget for the event, Shetter persisted. He recruited detective Chuck Tobias, and together they have turned the annual celebration into something special.
This year’s National Night Out will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the station, 8855 Elizabethtown Road. A rain date is set for the same time on Thursday, Aug. 6.
“This was something we really wanted to do for the community, and every year our job is to find
things to add to it,” Shetter said. “We feel like we owe it to the people who come to have something different every year.”
This year’s addition is a helicopter from the National Guard. It will take off and land throughout the event.
Other highlights include a bounce obstacle course, barrel train rides, tables from local organizations, food, music and fireworks.
“LIV-Etown, Tony and Clint Gibble, have been instrumental in helping us,” said Jill Munafo, secretary for the police department. “There will be a stage set up by Ross Productions for the third year, and we’ll have DJ Tyler Ross playing music, plus live music from Corty Byron.”

A destination marketing organization, Discover Lancaster has come up with a unique way to explore a shared past and celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday.
“We want to expand people’s horizons,” said Joel Cliff, who’s been Discover Lancaster’s director of communications for 18 years. “The passport helps to expand people’s horizons. We want people to realize there are a lot of different angles to our heritage. The passports have locations throughout the county. They might be places people may not have heard of or explored before.”
This passport to which Cliff is referring isn’t used as identification for foreign travel. Instead, it is a passport to local Lancaster County history.

You’ve heard of Christmas in July, but what about planning for Christmas when it’s July? That’s what the organizers of Christmas at The Star Barn Village are busy doing. They’re gearing up for the event, which will be held Saturday, Dec. 5. Tickets are on sale now, and people are encouraged to get tickets early as the event typically sells out.
The festivities will be held at The Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, and will begin with breakfast with Santa.

Fair to Feature Baking Contests
The 2026 Elizabethtown Fair will include several baking competitions. The fair will run from Monday to Saturday, Aug. 24 to 29, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. All baking contest entries will be received at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., on Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Contests open to amateur bakers who are residents of Pennsylvania include the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest; the PA Preferred Junior Baking Cookies, Brownies, and Bars Baking Contest; and the Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest. In addition, entries in these contests may not have won first place in their respective contest in any other 2026 fair. Entries in the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest must be submitted in a disposable pan and include at least 60% apples in the filling. All ingredients and decorations must be edible. The recipe for the pie and pie crust must be submitted with the entry; be printed on one side of 8.5-by-11-inch paper; and list all ingredients, quantities, and preparation
instructions. The entrant’s name, address, and phone number must be printed on the back side of all pages. Pies will be judged on flavor, filling, crust, overall appearance, and creativity. The Blue Ribbon Apple Pie will be selected from the four first-place apple pies, which will be the first-place one-crust and two-crust pies in the adult and youth divisions.
The PA Preferred Junior Baking Cookies, Brownies, and Bars Contest is open to individuals ages 8 to 18. The entry must be six cookies, brownies, or bars. Entries must be made from scratch and include at least two PA Preferred ingredients. Any decorations must be edible. Entries must be submitted for judging on a food-safe, disposable setting. Recipes must be submitted with the entry, be printed on one side of 8.5-by-11-inch paper, and list all ingredients, quantities, and preparation instructions with the entrant’s name, address, and phone number printed on the back of all pages. The Mars Snacking Baking Contest will have three classes: Decorated Cake; Sheet, Layer, and Cupcakes; and Cookies, Brownies, and Bars. Classes are open to adults and youths except for Cookies, Brownies, and Bars, which is open to youths only. All entries must be made from scratch and include Mars Wrigley products in all batters. Where decorations are used, they must be Mars Wrigley products. A recipe must be submitted with all entries. Decorated entries will be judged on appearance, creativity, and use of product. All other entries will be judged on flavor, appearance, and use of product.
A Best of Show Decorated Cake Contest will also be held. The winner of the contest will be selected from all first-place decorated cakes in the youth and adult divisions entered in the Elizabethtown Fair.

The first year, 2.5 million people across 400 communities in 23 states participated in the event. “Everything is free but the food vendors,” Shetter said. “Everyone is welcome - the more, the merrier.”
Tobias said the Elizabethtown event always draws a crowd, and organizers are happy to offer the community an activity that’s fun and free of charge.
“This event grows every single year,” he said. “The community loves it, and we love it, too. It’s a challenge for us to make this bigger and better every year, and we accept that challenge.” Parking is limited at the police station. “Physically, the passport is made of heavy material,” said Cliff, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s something that’s going to be a keepsake if someone is inclined. It’s a neat way to commemorate how you celebrated this special year.”

“We’ve got a heapin’ helping of history here,” said Cliff. “Lancaster is one of the oldest inland cities. It’s one of the very few United States capitals, even though it was only for one day. A lot of people forget that around the 1700s, Lancaster was the western frontier. I’d say we’re pretty historic in a lot of ways. I think on the historic landscape of central Pennsylvania, Lancaster more than holds its own. If the passport helps people explore some of the history, we think that’s a good thing for the local economy.
“There are so many great historical stories we wanted to share with locals and visitors,” Cliff continued. “The history and heritage aspect we offer is certainly significant. We’re well-known for the Amish community. History and heritage are often referenced by our visitors as reasons for coming here. With the country’s 250th birthday, it seemed like
the perfect opportunity to highlight that.”
An advocate for tourism, Discover Lancaster was formed from the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention and Business Bureau in 2015. Discover Lancaster, which receives 80 percent of its funding from Lancaster County’s hotel tax, employs 14 full-time staff members and eight parttime travel consultants.
“Tourism represents a
sizeable part of our overall economy,” said Cliff. “It helps provide jobs, tax revenues and economic growth. Locals can enjoy some of these experiences right in their own backyards. There are benefits to having a robust tourism industry. All in all, the passport is really cool. It’s a great way to spend time.”

Mount Gretna Tour of Homes Posted
Gretna Music will hold the 40th annual Mount Gretna Tour of Homes on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This self-guided walking tour invites visitors to explore 10 distinctive homes, three historic buildings, and outdoor art throughout Mount Gretna, rain or shine.
Proceeds from ticket sales will support Gretna Music, which is celebrating its 51st season of presenting live music - including classical, jazz, and world music performed at the Mount Gretna Playhouse.

tured homes is La Bella Zucca, a 1900s cottage tucked along the tree-lined paths of Mount Gretna. The owners purchased the home in 2022 and soon began renovations. Inspired by the warmth of the interior wood beams and woodwork - which transported them back to trips to Italy - the couple chose a rich Tuscan color scheme to guide the remodel. The structure includes eight stained-glass windows, and the front porch provides a clandestine view of the open-air Mount Gretna Playhouse. Another home on the
tour is the Cottage. Originally built in 1920, the home has been updated and well maintained over the years, requiring only a few additional improvements. Although modest in size at 790 square feet, the home has an efficient layout. The front porch has become a serene retreat for the owners.
The map will also guide the tourgoer to three recent outdoor art installments and three historic buildings, including the Mount Gretna Area Historical Society.

Strickler Appointed as EASD Superintendent
The Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD) Board of School Directors has announced that Tom Strickler, the district’s current chief financial and operations officer (CFOO) and interim superintendent, was appointed superintendent, effective July 1. Strickler will continue to serve concurrently in his role as CFOO.
Strickler joined EASD in June 2023 as CFOO and was later appointed interim superintendent following
the departure of Karen Nell, who accepted the position of superintendent of the Eastern Lebanon County School District.
As interim superintendent, Strickler balanced the responsibilities of leading EASD while continuing to oversee its financial and operational functions.
During his time at Elizabethtown, he has played a central role in advancing several key initiatives, including implementation of the district’s
comprehensive plan and the initial phases of the middle school and high school building project. He has been recognized for his collaborative approach, commitment to students, and focus on continuous improvement.
Strickler has extensive educational, operational, and executive leadership experience. Prior to joining EASD, he served as superintendent of the Columbia Borough School District, where he led daily operations, strategic planning, personnel management, curriculum oversight, fiscal administration, and board relations. He worked closely with the board to secure resources, strengthen organizational effectiveness, and support student achievement.

His professional experience also includes service with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and leadership positions within the private sector.
A graduate of Elizabethtown College, Strickler earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration with a concentra-
tion in accounting. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. He is engaged in professional and community organizations, including the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, Mental Health America of Lancaster County, the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators, and Junior Achievement of Central Pennsylvania.
The board did not conduct a comprehensive search for superintendent candidates because it believed that an external candidate would require significant time to learn the district’s opera -
tions, relationships, and priorities. While the board ultimately selected an internal candidate, it first conducted a comprehensive evaluation of Strickler’s qualifications and readiness to assume the permanent superintendency.
The board facilitated a formal interview process consistent with EASD policy and sound human resource practices. Reference checks were completed, and extensive discussions were held regarding Strickler’s leadership philosophy, strategic priorities, and vision for the future of the district. This process provided

board members with the opportunity to assess not only his past performance but also his capacity to lead the district into its next chapter.
One of the board’s highest priorities is to work collaboratively with Strickler to develop a bold and ambitious roadmap for the future. This work will include strategic goal setting, leadership development, continuous improvement initiatives, a comprehensive superintendent evaluation process, and investments designed to strengthen organizational capacity and ensure long-term success.

Walsh Wins Statewide Award
Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) senior Anika Walsh has been selected as the recipient of the PSBA Trust’s H.H. Quimby Scholarship, a statewide award recognizing outstanding student leadership and public service.
The H.H. Quimby Scholarship honors students who have served as student representatives to their local school boards during their high school careers.
Named for H.H. Quimby, the first president of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA), who served in 1895, the scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate a strong commitment to leadership and public service and who intend to pursue studies in policy, political science, advocacy, or nonprofit management.
Walsh has served as a stu-
dent representative to the Elizabethtown Area School Board, helping to provide a student perspective on issues impacting the district and school community. In addition to her academic accomplishments, she has demonstrated a sustained commitment to leadership and service throughout her high school career.
The PSBA is a statewide organization representing public school districts across Pennsylvania. The competitive PSBA Trust scholarship program recognizes graduating seniors from member school districts who exemplify excellence in academics, leadership, and community service.
Walsh plans to attend George Washington University to pursue a degree in public policy and continue her interest in civic leadership and advocacy.

The program is intended to help people build practical skills for interpersonal and group collaboration and restorative conflict resolution. Topics will

The 52nd annual Mount Gretna Art Show will fill the wooded streets and parks of the historic Chautauqua community on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. GPS users may navigate to 101 Chautauqua Drive, Mount Gretna.

and Bruce Campbell, bass. Emerging musicians will offer pop-up performances throughout the weekend.
Parking is available at Soldiers Field on Timber Road near the lake, with shuttle service from WellSpan Philhaven. The Mount Gretna Volunteer Fire Company will offer shuttle service for people with disabilities. Parking is free.
During show hours, Route 117 will be closed, and traffic patterns will be adjusted. All routes will be marked and staffed. There is an admission fee, with a discount for those who pay with cash. Children under age 12 will receive free admission. No pets are permitted on the Art Show grounds. Proceeds from the Art Show support the cultural programs of the Pennsylvania Chautauqua, contribute significantly to the Mount Gretna Volunteer Fire Company, and fund community projects throughout the area.
